Friday scent of the day 10/11

Posted by Robin on 11 October 2024 182 Comments

Happy FOMO Friday! (Also, National Fossil Day and International Day of the Girl.) Our community project for today: wear the perfume you bought because everyone else was buying it and you didn't want to miss all the fun. Thanks go to SarahN for the idea!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Fendi Theorema, which got so many raves on MakeupAlley back in the day that I had to have a bottle. It was already discontinued by the time I heard of it, but I lucked out and found a bottle at a mall kiosk. It was a very long time ago now, but my memory is that they let me sniff the cap and that's it. (Springpansy mentioned it as a FOMO pick yesterday, so I am not alone!)

Reminder: on 10/18, wear a fragrance that evokes one of Pantone's picks for the Autumn/Winter 2024/2025 NYFW Color Palette. (If you like, click through to the article and pick your fragrance based on the color name or description rather than the color itself, as in "Tomato Cream, a nourishing toasty hue that warms the soul." or "Italian Plum, a deep dark purple full of magical energies.")

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello and tgif!
My FOMO sotd is Seville a l’Aube.
I remember even before it’s release the whole perfume community was already buzzing with huge anticipation, then when it was finally out every reviewer and perfumista rushed to get their hands on a bottle and shared their thoughts with anyone listening. I joined the rush and ordered one blind immediately too. It turned out to be an absolute beauty of a scent. I love it so much.

Has anyone smelled the new Patchouli Paris from Guerlain of the new MFK scent?

I have not had a chance to observe a full-day’s wear, but my first impression of a back of the hand spritz was that it leans masculine. I will try to get to it this weekend and report.

I should add that I like many things that Delphine Jelk has where others do not. It is not a perfume I would probably buy due to the expense and there are so many other patchouli fragrances out there.

There was so much talk about Lush Sticky Dates body spray that I was dying to try it, and when finally it showed up at the local store, I gave it a sniff and, probably spurred on by the golden LIMITED EDITION on the label, bought it. It’s nice enough, a touch synthetic, but it has a lot in common with Let The Good Times Roll and Yog Nog (which I like the best of the three) — they all have a caramelly cooked-sugar quality. If I’d thought about it, and been able to smell it somewhere that wasn’t an overwhelmingly perfumed Lush, I probably wouldn’t have bought it — the downside of following the herd.

At any rate, I’m wearing it today and I like it fine. I could do worse.

I like Sticky Dates in the shower gel, but not sure I would like it as a spray. It might be a little too sweet for me.

Theorema is gorgeous and will have to wait until Sunday. I save my ultimate favorites for days when I am off work. By the time I discovered Theorema, it was discontinued but when I found it on on Fragrancenet, I bought 5 bottles.

Today I am wearing vintage Jicky edt. It is a FOMO because it was vintage and didn’t want to miss out, especially on having a teardrop bottle filled with Jicky.

I am aggravated with my local ER. Spent time from 4am to 8am yesterday in the ER with a vicious stomach problem that wasn’t going away. Most places have a nurse on call phone number and the nurse said I should head to the ER due to how much pain I was in. The ER had me wait in the waiting room for hours after they did blood work. They said that they were going have a CT scan done but were not sure when I will be called back. I was starting to feel better and wasn’t exactly willing to wait hours more in an empty ER. The ER had been fairly empty the whole time, so there wasn’t exactly a reason to have me wait around. This is a level 2 trauma center. Still feeling off but still need to go to work today.

Like you, I fell in love with Theorema, found out it was discontinued, and tracked down a couple of backup bottles. I’m wearing mine today as it feels fall-appropriate but is airy enough for a day of temperatures in the upper 70’s. I hope you feel better and get through your workday without problems!

I don’t know where you live but am very sorry to hear that awful story. Here in Houston many of us older folks with various medical issues have now shifted to going to emergency urgent care places, since they changed and will now accept Medicare (they didn’t at first and it was very cost prohibitive). Like you, I have spent literally HOURS unattended in the hall of big hospital ER’s with either a broken leg or a dislocated hip. TRUE STORIES. I had to start screaming at one point to get someone to bring me a bedpan because otherwise I would have been (well, you know). In the Urgent Care places you generally get attention within 10 minutes and they have real doctors there and lots of equipment for scans and bloodwork and stuff. I am perhaps lucky because there are several near me and I know now to go there. You may get a referral to a hospital if you need surgery (which I did when I had a broken wrist from a fall), but I would think that for a stomach ailment you’d probably be able to get attention right there. It’s just an idea for a future emergency (which I hope won’t happen!).

My SotD is Luctor Et Emergo, the edt. I got an edp sample from a lovely NSTer’s split and after several wearings (this being about the time I realized how long 5 or 10mls of perfume can last!), I decided to get a bottle. I hesitated and missed a bottle from a reseller, so I went over to Luckyscent and found it was out of stock in both edp and edt. I put my name on the wait list and after many weeks a lady emailed me to say they did not think they were going to get any edp, but maybe some edt. So I switched to that, got a notice when the edt came, and bought it. I don’t notice a huge difference from the edp and it is perfect for Fall weather. TMI re: my FOMO schemes, but a shout-out to Luckyscent for good follow up.

Feeling fuzzy this morning on account of a big event I attended last night — lots of people I hadn’t seen in 30 or 40 years. Fun, but I was so wound up when I got home that it took a while to get to sleep. My SOTM is my favorite lemming, Tam Dao layered with Philosykos. Later on I’ll switch to Au Delà Narcisse for the CP (and because I love it). Happy Friday!

You mean the Golden Palm? I agree, there’s something unpleasant about it in quantity, but it would make a great minor accent (say, very thin line) in a plaid with that luscious plum as the major note.

    Hello everyone!

I’m in Boxeuses today, which seemed like it had been discontinued for awhile. I had almost gotten a bottle during the pandemic when it seemed like every perfume company was sending out offer coupons daily. I ended up going with Mandarin Mandarine at the time (which I didn’t regret because that is actually discontinued now.) When Boxeuses showed up again on the Lutens website, I had to have it.

I’m doing my best to focus on lab reports today. Writing really is my nemesis these days.

    Have a great day everyone.

Delicious Delights was talking about Lancome Oud Bouquet as the one people ran up and complimented her on. I am not usually a gourmand but I immediately went to the discounters and bought an older bottle, for under $100. I later bought the newer L’Autre Oud for a lot more money, and it’s also nice.

Chanel Nº5 is SO iconic, famous, influential, and important, I knew that if I was going to call myself a true enthusiast/perfumista, I had to have it. Several years ago I bought a bottle of the EdP, and though I don’t wear it often (I wear Eau Première much more frequently,) I’m very glad it’s in my collection.

I do think the MVP is the most different-from-Shalimar of this current Millesime series, and the most interesting. I was so happy to get a split and will use my split up. I was on a no-buy when it came out – so FOMO realized. 🙂

It had to be Shalimar MVP for me today, the first of the millesime frenzy. I can’t remember the last time I felt such FOMO for a scent, it’s quite disconcerting to look back on actually. But no regrets, I love it so much! And luckily the FOMO for me has decreased with each iteration of these millesime flankers.

Currently commando as I sit in Urgent Care because I was a bit careless when slicing my bagel, which I never did get to eat. Anyway, for those interested, if you don’t have insurance it’s $400 to walk in the door plus the added costs of treatment. Only in the United States!

Anyway, I’ve been craving some Uncle Serge again so will probably wear Un Bois Vanille when I’m done with this nonsense. If I wasn’t 100% sure I needed stitches or dermabond and it wasn’t located on an area of flexion/extension, I would have definitely skipped this.

Thanks all! I’m fine but my checking account is weeping uncontrollably. 😭 I received a good wash out and and Dermabond to close it. She wanted me to have a splint to immobilize the joint but that would have been another $150 at least, so I passed! Didn’t damage the joint capsule and honestly, I should have just dealt with myself. $750 for a hibicleanse washout, one amp of Dermabond and 10 minutes of NP time. I kid you not. 😳 Good thing everything is included on my trip because there went any thoughts of a vacay memento. And, last minute decided on FM Vetiver Extraordinaire because it’s 80F flipping degrees at about 7000ft. Crazy! Stay well people! 💪

It’s a bit hard to get FOMO here as it’s more a case of MO full stop. It takes real guts and stamina to find a place that has a perfume you want,, check the $ exchange rate, get it shipped to NZ, watch the package travel slowly around the world on what looks like the most fascinating flight itinerary imaginable, clear customs and arrive 6-8 weeks later ( or not at all). It’s less hassle to put your fingers in your ears and sing tra la la as rave responses to the latest Shalimar flanker come in, as it would make you cry if you really wanted it. Likewise Tauer etc etc. I admire Gaynor for her tenacity and diligence, a real perfumista whereas I am more like a seagull scavenging over perfume scraps! Wearing Moonlight Patchouli on yet another cold morning.

I had FOMO for a long time until I moved five years ago this week and really started to downsize.
Probably 80% of my fragrances, especially Tom Ford and Serge Lutens were FOMOS.
My arms are working today! That flu one was a doozy.
Slept and slept I think especially knowing family was safe from storm.
Post shower some Chergui – cause I had FOMO.

Yeah, I had flu + Covid shots on Wednesday and my arm still hurts. On top of that I got a jawful of Novocain yesterday for two fillings in my two further back upper left teeth and all the work the dentist did while pressing on my face with her (very careful) work has given me a proper big bruise on my lower left cheek this morning! Waah!

Got my flu one week ago and COVID today. My first COVID shot in 2 years, skipped it a year ago because I had COVID in the fall. I don’t mind the sore arm, just don’t want to get the chills and headache that I have had with the COVID “boosters” in the past, usually a miserable 24 hours post-vaccine. I decided I would take a little bit of “predictable sick” over catching COVID.

I don’t really have a good FOMO scent but was planning to wear Philosykos today because in the initial stages of my serious perfume obsession I was trying out things according to notes and that was the one fig scent everybody said you must have as it’s the best. I had begun with a big purchase of the large sized bottle of L’Artisan Premier Figuieir Extreme and thought I should compare the two. (I wound up still liking the former one better.) End of the story, I couldn’t find my sample of Philosykos. My samples have become increasingly disorganized in the last few years since I last did what I thought was an excellent alphabetical sorting–so much for that plan! Now if someone here steps forward to tell me that some OTHER fig is the best of all possible fig scents I will immediately develop FOMO for whatever that one is–and please let it be available!

Wearing a total FOMO, bought blind (not too expensive!), but was a total success for me: Stash. Its a bit early in the season for Stash, which I save for cold wet days. But the heatwave broke yesterday and it is a crisp 60-something outside. So, Stash it is for the CP.

Asking again (I got some very helpful suggestions yesterday. Not going into the full story again here):

If you HAD to make a wish list for someone who wanted to buy you perfumes and smellies, but hadn’t tested much of anything in at least a year, what would you ask for?

Please suggest perfume-related products or perfumes you would or did buy blind.

    xxoo

I struggled with this, but changing FOMO into FOMAB (fear of missing a bargain) opened a whole array of options.
I’m wearing Œillet Bengale, which has some FOMO aspects as well. Everyone was always raving about Aedes de Venustas, I had tried Iris Nazarena which I liked ok, but wasn’t smitten by, and then one the big Dutch etailers started getting rid of their AdV’s. I had tried a few of Rodrigo Flores-Roux creations and liked them, I love carnation scents, so why not gamble on this when it was sold at half its original price? I was lucky in that I love it, and am now the proud owner of one of those beautiful bottles.

It starts out smelling like real gardenia, not terribly synthetic as some white florals do, then the warmer notes come in. I like it very much! It’s not “green” at all, though, if that’s your preference for gardenia scents. I do like some green with my gardenias, but this one is very nice and intriguing.

Just got back from a few glorious days of camping – bird and night sky watching and a little hiking – in the beautiful driftless area of southwest Wisconsin and haven’t had much time to give thought to today’s cp. I really don’t think I’ve ever bought a fragrance just because everyone else was, so I’m limiting my cp choice to a scent that many on NST raved about and were purchasing. My SOTD is Andy Tauer’s Au Coeur du Desert. I have the small blue bottle and love its woods and spice at this time of year.

I’m also reminded of a small purchase I made, luckily just a sample, of Andy’s PHI Une Rose after many here, and I think especially Deva, raved about it. Unfortunately, it’s the fragrance that taught me that I really dislike tobacco as a note which, on me, overpowers any rose 🌹 (can’t wear any of the Volutes either).

Haven’t had a chance to read any of this week’s posts, hope to catch up after I return from getting my Covid/flu boosters. Tidying up our camping gear for 🤞 one more trip later this month and putting up the Halloween 🎃 decorations are all that’s on my weekend agenda. Hope all is well with everyone – enjoy the weekend!🍁🍂

    SOTD = L’Artisan Parfumeur Seville a l’Aube

Seriously wonderful! I bought this way back when Denyse Beaulieu wrote about its history in The Perfume Lover. This could have been my one and only perfume bought as a result of being inspired by a book. Some say it smells like taco, banana or banana-filled taco 🌮… never got that!

Did you know that snakes 🐍 have feeties? I didn’t! There’s an article in the Wall Street Journal today about animals displaced by Hurricane Milton. Of course it was all about alligators but what captured my interest was a little snippet on animals with feet! NB: There may be a Pay Wall.

I might still have a manufacturer sample of Seville a L’Aube floating around here.

I can smell that there may be the idea of banana taco in there somewhere, but it’s so much more!

Twins with Jalapeno in Zara Leather Jardin. This was a blind buy as well, but it worked out. I was disappointed that the garden had no greenery in it, but other than that, I enjoy it. Perfect for this time of year.

I suspect lots of the Zaras created fomo lemmings around here 🙂

Today I went with a limited edition bottle I was able to snag in 2020 called Bloodline. It was created by Hans Hensley, a wonderful indie perfumer, for the perfume shop American Perfumer. I definitely bought it for FOMO because it was a blind buy and only 25 bottles were made. He’s since re-released it most years since then. It’s a big smoky scent with some different cedars. I think it’s great, but it did irritate my nose earlier so I’ll have to figure out if it happens every time I wear it.

Yesterday and Wednesday I wore my other two Shalimar Millesime perfumes, MVP and Iris. And smelled damn good both days. 😀

    sotd = Eau de Gaga

because little monsters need a fragrance too. 👻

This is my fomo not because everyone bought it, but because I was sure it would disappear from stores in a flash. I had to smell it just out of curiosity.

Turns out it has a great lime top note, and the rest is pretty much ok. Blind buys ftw! 😊

It is a shame she didn’t do one really wild fragrance!

Never even saw Eau de Gaga in a brick & mortar store. But her first perfume was everywhere (or so it seemed).

I really like Eau de Gaga – lime and then soft leather eau de cologne type. Pleasant (to me) and great in warm weather, but agree not nearly as wild as one might think/hope!

I have 5 versions of Shalimar that were purchased because of FOMO. I decided to wear Shalimar Souffle edp. The one I have is limited edition Peacock bottle. I snatched it up seconds after seeing it pop up at a discounter. It was a great deal too. I still regret not picking up the LE orange Souffle.

It was 37 dollars! I payed the shipping because I didn’t want to search for an add-on and miss out!

I have a LE Shalimar bottle called Siree? It’s just the edp in a special bottle. The LE of the Souffle and Intense bottles. The last 2 Millesime. I also have the edc but that is in the regular bottle.

The only thing that stopped me from buying that peacock bottle is that the then current Shalimar gave me a headache. 😆 So beautiful even so. ❤️

That’s a good reason to not have it! No bottle is worth a perfume headache.

LL Musc 25 today. I am interpreting the FOMO my own way and one major FOMO for me is the Le Labo City Exclusives. I decided I wanted to try LL Musc 25 (Los Angeles), since I like musks quite a lot. I think it took part of a year to figure out I could only test it in September, unless I wanted to go to LA. I tested the fragrance out, decided I wanted it and had to wait nearly a year until I could buy a bottle – the next September. I like the perfume, glad I have it, but is this limitation really necessary? I can’t imagine the company makes more money this way.

The real FOMO to me is the perfumes I bought which were readily available at the time – Bvlgari Black, Donna Karan Black Cashmere – and are now discontinued. So glad I have those. This possibility of discontinuation does influence my buying habits now, probably more than it should.

And I should have bought Black! At least I still have Black Cashmere.

I have no idea if they make more off the City Exclusives than they would otherwise…I guess it gives people a reason to go to the boutiques? So maybe it drives some foot traffic? Really, no idea.

Love Bvlgari Black and also glad I bought a bottle – back when it was a decent price at the discounters.
