Wednesday scent of the day 10/9

Posted by Robin on 9 October 2024 90 Comments

It's Wednesday and John Lennon’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m in Imaginary Authors Yesterday Haze.

Reminder: 10/11 will be FOMO Friday...wear the perfume you bought because everyone else was buying it and you didn't want to miss all the fun. Suggested by SarahN.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello.
Sotd is Dior Rouge Trafalgar Esprit de Parfum. Smells like the best strawberry candy and it is potent too. I like it a lot but I don’t know if I can justify paying the price. I will drag out my sample by using 2 spritz max each time.
I also tested out Byredo’s new Mojave Ghost Absolu. It is a ghost alright. In fact, it’s so ghost like, I can’t even smell anything on the blotter and on my skin. Money saved and that’s great because I hate the cap. I think I need to give up trying this house as I have yet to find a scent that I like from them.

lol, I’m guessing you’re anosmic to something in the formula?
I really like 1996 from that line and have a bottle of De los Santos.

Byredo is a miss from me too, with only Pulp and M/Mink being worth note. I did swap for a few near-empties though, and they aren’t bad. I can’t fathom paying those prices though when I could get something much more satisfying.

    I’m in no 5 L’eau.
It has officially become flannel pajamas and down comforter season in my house. The days are still sunny and warm though. We are supposed to hit 80 again this Friday. 😎
I got an email from merit beauty that they are releasing a new perfume this month and were including samples in orders placed so of course I placed an order lol. I’m about due for some new mascara anyway. I’ve become a tubing mascara convert in the last year or so. Merit’s is pretty good for a day to day mascara but I do find I need 3 coats. Zero flaking or smudging though. If you have a favorite tubing mascara, let me know!

My favorite for the past couple of years is Tower 28 Making Waves. Black or brown. I have deepset hooded eyes and it’s the only mascara I’ve found that didn’t transfer or smudge and I’ve tried a LOT of tubing mascaras. I’m needing a new tube, which would be #4 or 5, that’s how many times I’ve repurchased it. They have mini’s if you don’t want to commit to a full tube.

We have those flannel days too now. I just put on my flannel sheets the other day. Of course, I wake up to 41 degrees and it is going to be 80 here later today and warmer tomorrow.

I have a small travel size of Tarte’s “Tartlelette XL Tubing Mascara” in black. It works great on my upper lashes, but not so much on the lower ones. I think I need to still wear waterproof mascara there.

I am wearing Teo Cabanel Alahine. All those ‘Alahiiiiine!’ comments here made me get a sample and then a decant. Lots of lovely resins.

    Lennon’s birthday?
‘My auntie who brought me up all my life, all the time she was saying, ‘The guitar is all right as a hobby, John, but you’ll never make a living at it.’ So I got that on a plaque for her and sent it to her in the house I bought her.’

I am in Diptyque L’Ombre Dans L’Eau. I’ve noticed that my travel size bottle from the discovery set is evaporating quickly (this happens every time no more than one third of perfume is left in the bottle) so I decided to use it more often these days.
I am praying for the people affected by hurricane Milton.

I was eighteen, living in London for the year. I remember the BBC1 radio voice announcing the awful news – a surreal nightmare. Not long after, I made a pilgrimage to Liverpool. The entire city seemed crushed.

I had forgotten that Ralf Schwieger did both of these fragrances. The difference for me is the leather/incense combo in Iris Nazarena but it makes me want to do a side by side comparison.

If you’d like to try it, I’d be glad to send you a sample of Iris Nazarena😊

I’m wearing Divine Vanille from a travel spray. This gets mostly 5 stars over at LS but I’m not sure why..? I mean, it’s NICE and I do like it but it’s a rather middle of the road vanilla on me. Not too sweet, not too dry, not too strong…not too memorable. It’s a contender for vacay not because it’s my favorite, but because I have a travel spray and wouldn’t have to fiddle with decanting. Also, because its personality is very middle of the road and inoffensive I could probably wear it in a group without anyone going all Kung Fu Karen on me. Maybe I’m missing something…🤷🏻‍♀️

    I’m watching you, Milton! 🌀👀
Floridians, sending heartfelt wishes you have left the area of impending doom. And if you haven’t, I just don’t know…I’m hoping for the best, but the practical part of my brain is not optimistic.

Maybe its middle of the road thing is what makes it work for a lot of different people. It sounds good to me. I’ll have to sample.

I agree with your scent being middle of the road. It didn’t “move” me. I did not really think it smelled like vanilla. I thought it was more cinnamony than anything else. I would say you are right that it is not too sweet, not too dry, not too strong and not too memorable. I forgot about it until you mentioned it. For some reason, I thought you loved it! I obviously am thinking of someone else😉

    Hello all!

I would guess a good third of my collection is FOMO buying, if I’m honest, though I have had pretty good success with blind buys. In an environment where perfumes are launched every day and sometimes discontinued after only a batch or two, it takes a stronger person than me to resist! My buying has slowed down a lot since I’ve reentered school, but even my last buy, Trudon’s Olim, was greatly influenced by its discontinuation.

And to reiterate my point, my perfume of the day is Baiser Vole Essence de Parfum, the gourmand-y one. Luckily it’s still mostly about the lily but the vanilla in the base is a bit more legible. The differences between flankers really does fascinate me, so I’m glad I have my little bottle of this. (The extrait is far and away my favorite though, and I do have a back-up.)

I’m knee-deep in lab report writing this week, and a test in physical chemistry next week. Physical chemistry in particular feels mystical still, and it doesn’t come naturally to me. Luckily we’re talking about real-life stuff now, and not theoreticals.

    Have a great day everyone!

I so admire your stick-to-it-ivness. I forget what degree your going for, but a professor of mine once said her first PhD wasn’t “that hard” and consisted mostly just putting her head down, pulling like a draft horse, and refusing to be distracted or side tracked. I’m sure you’ve got this class in the bag already, you just don’t know it. Keep pulling! 🙌

I bought it unsniffed at a Winners many years ago after it was talked up here. and then I returned and bought a second perfume after I found out what it was like. When this second bottle is gone, it’s gone, but I am happy it’s been in my life.

I’m wearing Aromatics Elixir which I love in autumn, winter and spring. It’s been pouring with rain all day and Luxemburg is currently in “alerte rouge” because of flood risks.
I’m absolutely fine, I live on a hill and this building remained perfectly dry all through the massive floods of July 2021.

The rough version of my difficult translation is done. It will just need some fine tuning and checking.

@ Deva: I don’t just translate things directly related to medicine, but also stuff involving chemicals, biocidal products, plastics, food etc. Interestingly it’s made me very thankful for having my medical degree. I’ve completely rediscovered my love for chemistry and biology which is just great.

SotD is Prada Day for Night. I bought some samples of this and Marienbad, both from the Olfactories line, just because I liked the names and they sounded nice. I love both, but the latter is a fall/winter scent only, so I haven’t worn it too much yet.
If I had seen all of the notes they list on Fragrantica, I probably would have passed it by. Caramel? Vanilla? Not for me! But it’s beautiful and not heavy or too sweet. There are some citrus notes and maybe some patchouli or leather at the far drydown. I would describe it as an ambery chypre.
Hope everyone and their families are staying safe today.

It’s very close to my memory of the original, so much that I can’t point to a difference. The original was one of my first department store perfumes I purchased in my early 20s, along with the original Marc Jacobs.

Well, it might not last as long as the original, but since it has probably been 20 years since I smelled my old bottle who can tell! I like it a lot and have a few samples of it. I have too many bottles of other perfumes that I don’t need a bottle, but I might go for it all the same.

Sketchy air quality here today, due to out of state wildfires. It was in the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category around lunchtime. Been running the air purifier.

SOTD = still in POOF! But I have a couple of options for Friday’s CP. Weather and mood will determine which one I choose.

sotd = le Jardin de Monsieur Li

The top notes are delicious. 🍊 The drydown is pretty alright. I’ve had fun comparing it to Jour d’Hermes.

I’ve been wearing M. Li for quite a lot of days in a row, almost a week I think. The travel spray is handy to have in my purse.

Maybe that’s why it’s gotten repeated use. In the past one day of occasional wear was enough for me.

And I like it more now than when it was new. Noses can change for sure, or maybe the scent has aged well. 😊

Love it when a perfume mellows out and ages well in the bottle!

I’m halfway to Japan today, in Honolulu, and so far the jetlag app I’m using seems to be working. Tomorrow I fly to Tokyo to see my sister and start eating my way around the country. I brought a handful of samples to wear, but I am scentless today. There should be Wi-Fi in all the hotels so I will be able to read but probably won’t post. I am also hoping that Milton won’t be as bad as the satellite images are making it look. Sending safe thoughts to those in its path.

Have a great time! Have you investigated the Airalo app? A cheap way to stay connected when Wi-Fi isn’t available. But of course, being disconnected has its benefits, too. 🙃

Because I got several samples along with my Shalimar MJ, I’ve been digging through my other Guerlain samples this week. Rose Cherie just haunts me because I am not a rose fan yet I enjoy wearing it and its lasting power. And Jasmin Bonheur, my SotD, also is winning my favor. Both RC and JB are not instant crushes, rather almost the opposite. But I get lots of twists and turns and they are not shy. Jasmin Bonheur could turn into a FOMO buy,

Rose Cherie is quite beautiful. “Haunting” is a good descriptor for it.
