Tuesday scent of the day 9/17

Posted by Robin on 17 September 2024 205 Comments

It's Tuesday and International Country Music Day (aka Hank Williams’ birthday). More birthdays: Billy the Kid, William Carlos Williams, Hank Williams, Ken Kesey. Watch for the harvest supermoon + partial lunar eclipse tonight! What fragrance are you wearing?

I am commando for work+dentist today. My plan for late afternoon is Diptyque Tam Dao. Tea at the moment is a blend of Upton Indulgashinna Organic + Christmas Tea.

Reminder: on 9/20, we're off to Mainland Southeast Asia! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in Mainland Southeast Asia (we'll include Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and West Malaysia), or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to to the region, or that features a local ingredient, or ?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Chiang Mai street food - cha yen [cropped] by Streets of Food at flickr; some rights reserved. [Ed note: in the US, that's known as Thai Iced Tea.]

Good luck with the dentist, Robin!

SOTD is Tauer Heraud, which I got today. I’m glad I got the sample set, rather than blind buying. I think others will love it; I’m iffy on gourmands, and this one is too sweet for me. I liked the opening, which to my nose briefly had incense (not in the notes), then cocoa and maybe a hint of tobacco (also not in the notes). But then came a cedar note early in the drydown that was overpowering on me; mercifully it receded to the background and is now there slightly complicating strong, sweet vanilla and cocoa which has lasting power even with just one spray. I will come back to it as the weather gets cooler to see if my take changes any.

And just as I say I’m iffy on gourmands, one of my scents this weekend was Felanilla, which felt just right for that moment, in slightly cooler weather (higher elevation). I usually only wear it in deep winter, but it worked beautifully last weekend.

Thanks for your report. I’d like to try this one at some point, but I’m guessing it will be too sweet for me also.

Thank you for your thoughts! I am verrrry interesting in Heraud. Does the cocoa ever become sweet chocolate?

🙂 With the vanilla at the end, yes, it’s more sweet chocolate but emphasis on the sweet. I like my chocolate dark…this isn’t that.

I’m in Prada un chant d’amour. Tea is a vanilla latte.
I had a rough week last week and didn’t feel like posting. Got some upsetting news on Sunday which made for a week of horrible sleep, stomach aches, headaches and bouts of unwanted tears. Ugh.
Luckily I got a mental reset on Saturday because it was madtownteen’s birthday. And yes, even though we just left her at college 2 weeks ago we went over to spend the day with her anyway. Because, it was her birthday, it was a Saturday, and she will always be my baby. We had a lovely day. The weather was gorgeous. We went for a Mississippi River boat cruise during the afternoon which is something we’ve never done before. Her roommates just happened to be gone for the weekend so we hung out in her dorm for the evening and enjoyed cake and ice cream. She seems to be settling right in and already seemed like she is right at home there. Makes me happy.☺️

I was my moms’ baby and I was 64 when she died at 95.
My nephew is 53 and my sister still says her baby.

Ooh, yes- this is a lovely skin scent, which is one of my favorite categories. On my skin I get neroli, cotton flower and soft musk. It wears very close to the skin. I’ve got 5 sprays on each arm. Very pretty and I can’t imagine it would offend anyone which makes it an office friendly perfume for me.
This line is ridiculously priced imo but I recently got a great deal on a tester. Worth a sniff if you also like skin scents. I think you are not in the us?, or I’d send you a smidge to try.

Wearing Chaldee today since I will be running errands and out in the heat. The CP is going to take more thought than my brain is capable of right now, I didn’t get much sleep.
I will be at my daughter’s house for the rest of the week. She has also lost a lot of weight and needs help finding a dress to wear to a wedding. I’m trying to be upbeat but I still have trauma from taking her and her friends to the mall when they were teenagers. Lol but not really, ha!

      Oh! Almost forgot!
This is not about perfume but you all are a very intelligent and interesting group so I want to get your input.
I bought the most beautiful Italian marble statuette at an estate sale over the weekend. It was $15 and I about fainted. There was yucky felt on the bottom that I scraped off to reveal “Italy” carved in the base but searching online hasn’t turned up much except that she’s hand carved and very old. Where do I take this to get it appraised? There are some online sources but I want a real person, just don’t know where to start. Thanks in advance NST!

Sorry I have no answers but one thing you could do is a google ‘reverse image’ search that would show you similar statues and their prices. I’ve done this when trying to ID perfume bottles with no labels or ID marks.

Where are you? I would go to a high end Pawn shop or a really well established old jeweler shop that also sells knick knacks, and those people could express an opinion and tell you where to find a real appraiser in your area if it seems appropriate.

HdP 1804, non-CP-compliant (that will be the case all week).

Since when did the West of Ireland turn warm and sunny? The flooding on the European mainland is heart-wrenching. Here in Galway, we are having a string of days in the high 60s/low 70s, and sun, sun, sun. I brought very little in the way of warm-weather clothes, so my outfits have been even more repetitive than anticipated. Mr. Skal and I are going to try a sea swim (probably Thursday) before heading off with the students on Friday for a multi-day excursion.

Your weather is headed our way here in the Rhein valley. It was cool and rainy for a week, though. Luckily the flooding seems all to be east of us. Today finally the sun has come out and it’s just above 20 now.

I hope the visit to the dentist goes well.

I met with a friend yesterday. Her husband has recently joined the army. He is still in training and hasn’t been involved in any fighting yet, but of course, she is worried about him…

I also received news that I failed a recent translation test. I felt good about the test and honestly believe I should have passed. However, the more I read about the company, the more I suspect their testing process might be the issue. Well, maybe it’s for the best, and I shouldn’t be working for them anyway. What really annoys me is that they flat-out refused to provide any feedback, citing ‘company policy.’ I know the feedback exists in writing, so sharing it would require almost no effort. Why hide it from the translator unless you’re afraid it will reveal unfair judgment? Oh well. Gotta roll with the punches.

so sorry about this, Glannys, and I’m glad you have a good attitude about your skills, which are clearly superb, and that you realize the problem is THEM not you. And yes, you’re probably better off not working for them since if their tests are that shoddy, they might also question your translations and give you many headaches. Good riddance!

I don’t want to be arrogant. But if it’s me, I would like to see where I went wrong so that I could learn from my mistakes. And you are right – there is a worrying number of translators’ reviews complaining about working with them. Ironically, customer reviews of this company’s translations are very mixed (you’d think with the stringent testing they would offer the highest quality).

I’m sure your translation skills are superb! 🙂

Usually when you sense that there’s something off about what the company’s doing, you’re better off not working there, at least in my experience. After seeing today’s news, I’m yet again feeling thankful that, realizing the culture was not a fit, I walked away from a company that kept trying to recruit me over a decade ago. I asked about company culture, and I was told “we work hard and we play hard”…well, at the time with a toddler, my hard playing was done on the playground, not with colleagues after work! 🙂 Today’s announcement that’s in the news is totally in keeping with that culture…so glad I dodged that one. Their interviews were also full of trick consulting questions that they thought had a single answer…like anything in life is that neat. 🙂 Haven’t regretted it.

I do hope all goes well for your friend’s husban

I’m in “Marrakech Intense” from Aesop. I discovered it several years ago when I was searching for a replacement to my much loved and deeply missed “Eros” from Aveda. Both share a sort of “natural” feel to them; the Aveda had wonderful patchouli and bitter orange notes, while the Aesop is maybe a little woodsier. “Marrakech” is very nice, and a decent substitute, but I will always long for “Eros.”

Ahh, I miss those old Avedas as well. They were so unique. I associate them and the Crabtree Evelyns, L’Occitanes, and Caswell Masseys with the 90s mall stores that I used to frequent. They had quality fragrances and no snobbery. I like the Aesop frags too and agree it’s a similar vibe. You smell great.
I’m in Box of Eels today, wafting the remains from last night’s application, which was very cozy and beautiful, two things that don’t always go together but in this case mesh perfectly.

I was a huge Crabtree & Evelyn fan in the late ’80s / early ’90s. Quality fragrances that immediately trigger memories for me…

      Those early Avedas were AMAZING!

FYI, I visited an Aesop shop yesterday. They have a new fragrance, Virēre, that “melds an intricate blend of ingredients to evoke the scents of summertime, from sun-warmed citrus fruits to fragrant fig trees,” that other customers were swooning over.

Not for me, as it has that note I can’t stand that also appears in Ubar. Doesn’t seem to bother most people, though.

I bought Ouranon, which they say is frankincense, hay, and myrrh.

Have you ever tried Virēre or Ouranon?

After a late exchange about it with jalapeno last night, I unearthed the remains of my Fzotic sample set and am in Vetiverissimo this morning. My sample has dwindled to just a few molecules, but it still managed to dispense enough for a test (or retest, clearly, since I must have sprayed most of it some time ago), and I do like it very much. I don’t think I need a FB, but there might be a travel size in my future. 😁

I have recovered from the John Mellencamp/Bob Dylan/ Willie Nelson concert, which I am glad I attended, but which was a bit of a disappointment. John rocked the house to its feet and was the high point. Dylan had a nice bluesy backup band, but played new acoustic style ballads and the words were lost in the echoing vastness of the venue- he did not play a single song I knew, and the crowd sorta sat like lumps while he played. I do not feel the need to seek out his recent work. Willie is Willie, and he played oldies, and the crowd was enthusiastic for him, but he looked like a 90 year old man standing up there playing, which was rather sad, and the wind died down and the cigar and cigarette smoke settled toward the stage ( we were at Pine Knob north of Detroit, an outdoor venue with a large covered seating area, with a lawn seating hill behind the seats.) and we left early cause I started getting an asthma attack. So not the best concert experience, but good enough! Leaving early we got ahead of the obligatory traffic jam at the gate, and were safely home in bed by midnight. LOL! I am glad I went. If Dylan comes around and plays some 500 seat indie theater, I would get seats in the front row and hope to understand the words. I have been playing Willie’s songs ever since-the man has an amazing catalog. All in all, a good experience.
I am in Tam Dao today, in an attempt to stay focused and get things done. All I really want to do is watch reruns of Ted Lasso and knit….Happy Tuesday, one and all!

Was the cigar smoke from the audience or the performers? You lasted longer than I would have. Sounds like kind of a historic concert to have attended, even if not ideal.

The only good thing about seeing how depressingly old the celebs of my youth look is that I don’t feel so bad about how *I* look. 😉

Look, I am a massive Dylan fan but I am well aware that his goals in concert of not those of most entertainers. I saw him at the Mann Center (4700 seats under a roof, many more thousands outside) and was reasonably close to the stage. He did many old favorites but not so as you’d recognize them (he was 1/3 of the way through Tangled Up in Blue before I realized that was what he was playing).

Anyway, I knew going in that he was not there to give the audience what they want so I was not disappointed — I did what I wanted which was to see him live once. Even if he played a 500 seat theater near me I would not go, especially not with what concerts cost these days.

Mavis Staples, however, blew me away, she was amazing!

I think some of it is just that it all do so loud I took out my hearing aids and had earplugs in my ears to buffer the sound. Blood on the Tracks was the soundtrack of my life in the mid ‘70s, but he did not play Tangled Up in Blue at all. But, as I say, I am glad I was there! 🙂

I have a small balcony, and for the almost 10 years I have been living here I have never had a problem with pigeons. All of the sudden pigeons are coming on the balcony and I have bird poop. I think a neighbor near me must be feeding them. Good Grief.

I am really loving the TV show ShoGun, been slowly making my way through the series. I also love reading books by Japanese authors, need to add some to my stack soon.

I just realized that Shogun is on Hulu, which I do get, rather than on HBO as I had thought–which I don’t get. So I plan to watch it very soon. I’m really hooked on Pachinko, on Apple TV, partly because I’m a fan of Lee Min ho, the Korean mega-star, but also because it’s just plain good and beautifully shot. But it happens to feature the woman who just won the Emmy for Shogun, Anna Sawai. She’s very good in Pachinko and is incredibly beautiful.

I loved Pachinko — the book. I should try the TV series, but no Apple TV here in Germany, though probably we could subscribe on top of everything else. But we have the last season of Babylon Berlin to get through (which no one picked up in the US) and Kaos (which the kid is all over, and we enjoyed the 1st episode).

4 seasons — though it’s a bit confusing as seasons 1 & 2 were released at the same time. Netflix didn’t pick up season 4, but it’s just come out in North America on some tiny service called MHz Choice. Season 5 is supposed to be shooting this year, I think — I think that’s the last.

A buck just trotted past my window. It’s rare to see them this close to people, so that’s my smile of the day.

Working alone today so I just sprayed about half a hajusuuri of Vetiver Oriental. This need to be an ice skating move like the triple Axel, Salchow, or Lutz. On some days I do a full hajusuuri, but today I’m not sure if I could pull it off, so I opted on the half hajusuuri for some points. Can you imagine the the host/commenter: “She’s going after the FULL HAJUSUURI today! It’s a difficult move and she fell earlier in practice. Here’s the set up…will she pull it off ?!? SHE DID IT! Stuck the landing and made history with the first FULL HAJUSUURI in a competition!” The crowd goes wild!

I finally decided to buy an Apple Watch, so yesterday I went to one of my favorite places in the DC area, the original Tysons Corner Center mall, which opened in 1968. (AKA Tysons I, which preceded the even higher end Galleria, Tysons II, nearby.)

While malls have been failing nationwide, this one is still vibrant thanks to how international the DC area is. You would be hard pressed to decide what country you are in just by looking at the young people who throng this mall — even on a Monday evening — or at the range of cuisines in its food court and tucked away in odd corners of the mall.

For example, there is a Saudi coffee shop, a Japanese matcha refreshment kiosk that offers fancy shaved ice and ice cream treats, a Turkish cafe with sweets flown in from Istanbul, and a revolving conveyer belt sushi bar, in addition to Indian, etc.

The first Apple store opened in this Mall in 2001. I always find the Tysons Apple store less noisy and more inviting in subtle ways than other Apple stores in the area. My sales associate yesterday was charming, diplomatic, and patient (I am old and not super technological). It was a luxury shopping experience in the best possible ways, and I have a new tool/toy to use and enjoy. 🥰

Afterwards, I had just enough time to sniff fragrances at the Aesop boutique and pick one, Ouranon, so I also smell great today, IMHO.

          This is the one:

          https://www.tysonscornercenter.com/

Also the nearby Galleria has Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue with great perfume counters. Both malls are Metro accessible.

About 20 or 30 minutes away by car and accessible via a different Metro line is Arielle Shoshana, epicenter of niche perfumery. I would actually put that first on my priority list for perfume.

Your middleSPson might enjoy Tysons Corner Center more though, if he hasn’t already been there.

Mid-October is the PERFECT time to visit. I personally prefer fall here to DC’s famous cherry blossom spring.

I am taking the Apple Watch one step at a time, but I already LOVE it.

Check out the Wikipedia chapter on Tysons Corner Mall, it’s fascinating.

The thing is, overseas in hot countries like Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States, Indonesia, Singapore, etc., etc., malls are fabulous and where whole families and groups of friends go to hang out in the AC. And it’s not as if DC has many months or weeks when it is truly pleasant to be outdoors. So that mall culture translates here, and Tysons is easy to get to.

Pear, banana, Clementine and yogurt smoothie

My departure is approaching and I’m nervous about forgetting something at the last minute, I started packing this afternoon even though I leave Saturday, I don’t have to take very much as I have plenty of clothes there. This morning I chose Kenzo Flower which has amazing longevity, I had forgotten as I havent’ worn it in a long while and tonight it’s Les Néréïdes Imperial Oppoponax which is basically a less imperious Shalimar.

Fresh strawberries are now coming to an end, they’re more expensive, so it’s back to smoothies.

I think they are many of us who don’t enjoy flying, who does these days.

After my trip this summer, I have realized that flying a non-budget airline does improve the experience somewhat. So I will remember that for the future.

La fin d’un été by Pierre Bourdon, which might have some ingredients from Asia. It’s a lovely fragrance and so very well suited for September, which is when I bought it 5 years ago.

I’m wearing my sample of Babycat (thanks to a lovely NST friend). Mr. SP is home from his weekend trip and although I had a nice weekend with various friends and a beautiful hike, I’m very happy to have him home. I’m going to bake Invisible Apple Cake for a fun dessert tonight which my son tells me is wonderful.

Hermes Osmanthe Yunan today, have an exercise class later on and want to keep it low key. I’ll be able to spray this on again multiple times before I go at 6pm, so I get all the fun of that to look forward to 🙂

    Lyric Woman for me today.

What a fun CP! I could easily do a week of Dusita scents with my samples. But other notes that come to mind as being SE Asian are: pandan, lemongrass, rice, and bamboo.

Sampling Muscat by Ormond Jayne and I was going to post in answer to a query from the weekend that the house doesn’t usually work on me (perhaps the Iso E Super?) but I don’t detect that note in this one from 2022 and it does have oud, which as far as I know is ALL harvested from the Cambodia/Laos area, though most of Muscat, including the name, is from the wrong continent for the CP. I’m not big on oud so I don’t need a bottle of this but I was happy to try it, especially to satisfy my curiosity about the ‘date oil’ note. There is definitely the honeyed Middle Eastern sweets thing going on, dancing a tango with the oud to see if they will kill each other or have a one-night stand.

Thai Iced Bubble Tea sounds pretty darn good to me! 😋

Lots of weather alerts and warnings on my cell phone this afternoon. So far, all I’ve seen is some wind and a bit of rain. Hopefully it stays that way. Definitely experiencing a cool down here.

SOTD = Molyneux Quartz pour Femme. Much to my amusement, my bottle says “Berdoues Parfums et Cosmetiques” in very small letters on the back.

Excuse my ignorance, but what does your SOTD mean with the two different names, or I should say the name plus the one in small letters on the back.

Molyneux is the house, and Quartz pour Femme is the name of the scent.

Berdoues is who bottled the perfume. I remember back in the day Revlon and Charles of the Ritz having some kind of agreement with their products…
