Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ transitional fragrances, fall 2024

Posted by Robin on 7 September 2024 221 Comments

The ninth edition of a poll about transitional fragrances: what are your favorite fragrances as summer turns to fall this year? What scent makes you happy as the nights get chilly and the days take on that crisp edge? And tell us what perfume you wish you owned for chilly weather.

(Or, if you’re like me, tell us what fragrances will allow you to hang on to that summer feeling just a little bit longer. And of course, if winter is turning to spring where you are, adjust  the questions accordingly.)

Or, as always, talk about something else…

    Happy Saturday, everyone!

It’s my birthday, and though it’s always something of a mixed bag, I’m grateful for so much in my life, especially having health for me and my loved ones. I’m looking forward to another trip around the sun, as they say.

I think I’ll wear some vintage Aramis – an old-school classic seems an appropriate way of celebrating the aging process!

Cheers to all who make this forum such a delightful place to hang out.😊

Happy Birthday Daniel! You smell wonderful in Aramis. It brings fond memories of my dad as he applied that with abandon. I loved it!

I laughed when I read “applied with abandon.” My father did the same thing. I was in a high school play and he came late, after the play had started. I was playing Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons and I became totally distracted by wafts of his Aramis!

We’re having a cloudy, fall-looking day here, but sadly not very fall-feeling as it will be hot and muggy out there. But because I’m an autumn fan and it at least looks like fall, I went with Under My Skin, a very transition-y scent. Serendipity!

My one fall staple is Yves Rocher Nature Homme Millénaire, which smells like autumn — damp earth, crunchy leaves, spices galore. I’ll break it out on September 22nd and not a minute sooner. (Although I was tempted on September 1st, meteorological fall, but it was still summer — rainy and humid and gross. I’ll wait until it’s properly autumnal, with the promise of a cool dry season.)

Today it’s beating down rain so we’re staying inside (I did go to the gym, which fortunately is in our building). I was in the mood for something classic so I’m in vintage Ted Lapidus Création, a proper eighties chypre, not miles away from others of its ilk such as Ungaro Diva and Paloma Picasso Mon Parfum, but still its own glorious thing.

    Happy weekend!
Typhoon just pass by and it brought loads of heavy rain. Not a fan. But at least it’s *slightly* cooler for a day or two.
The arrival of fall means I can finally bring out my beloved ouds. Gucci’s The Voice of The Snake and A Reason To Love, LV Ombre Nomade. ON is very nicely blended, if you happen to pass by a LV do give it a spritz.
Fall transition also means heavier gourmands. Bee, Tobacco Honey, BR540, Good Girl Gone Bad Extreme…etc.

A lovely day here again! Mid 70’s with blinding sunshine and a bluebird sky. Yesterday I didn’t even have to turn on the A/C.

I’m still smelling a bit like Chypre Mousse even though I showered and wearing a different shirt. I think a bit must have gotten on my bra when I spritzed, so still smelling pretty amazing. I may re-spritz or go with something else, not sure yet.

As for fall fragrances…well, my heart beats a bit faster with all the lovely fall and winter fragrances I have lined up. Orientals (do they still use that word?), ambers, smokey woods, warm spices, leather- I want to wear them all, sometimes at the same time! Can’t wait for sweater weather, hot tea with honey and lemon, seeing T-Rex looking adorable and cozy in her fleece, changing colors of the landscape, relaxing by a campfire and watching the sun go down, brisk breezes, snuggling under the covers at night, falling leaves, putting on a scarf before stepping outside and trying to figure out the conglomeration of scents cozied there in, having a bit more energy to do things…all of it! Should be fall 9 months of the year as far as I’m concerned.

Hope everyone has a happy weekend!

The bra thing happened to me earlier this week, when I was wearing Tubéreuse Criminelle and my bra was still giving of puffs of Goutal’s Passion. I must admit the combination was stunning (they share tuberose)

          Perhaps!
But you got me thinking about this more. How about this:
          5 months spring
          5 months fall
          1 month winter
          1 month summer

Just so that we don’t lose our appreciation of spring and fall. 😁

I am just back from 3 days at the beach and we had that same weather! Low 70s — just warm enough to lie in the sand, to me, way too cold to swim but lots of people were doing just that — beautifully sunny, cool nights.

Autumn in my favorite season. I have already made spice muffins-it just involves regular cake batter with nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, allspice…

For the farmers market this morning I wore Frédéric Malle Eau de Magnolia.
After the shower Initio Side Effect-

I don’t really limit my perfume based on seasons, but curious to read other peoples list.

What I do like for fall- is shopping!!!! I just bought a new pair of cowboy style boots and a chocolate brown tartan “mens” style blazer for fall!

I love fall clothes. Your new purchases sound perfect.

I had been thinking that my big souvenir purchase in Galway would be a pair of bespoke tweed trousers, but the maker I had in mind seems to have gone in a very different direction. Still, they are local, so I will connect with them to see what’s what.

I just made my perfume tray switch on my dressing table to fall scents. These are my steady go-to favs I like to have close at hand. After the switch my first choice was Hermetica. Fall is spices, leaves, deeper vanilla, my beloved Bulgari Black. Besides the tray the shower gels got changed out too. It’s not quite sweater weather yet here in Minnesota but I’m ready! Fall is my favorite time of year.

I’m in 4160 Tuesdays Hush Hush edt today. This is a pretty good transition scent as it has some depth but is still close to the skin. Hopefully the weather cool down will be here next week as promised!

Some of my other transition scents are Chanel No. 19 edt and the Poudre version. May have to bring out the Shalimar body creme for night time. I think Fall is my favorite time of year; so many good scents to wear.

In other news, patience is usually good, as in this morning. My Wall Street Journal subscription is supposed to expire on September 9. I called today to stop the auto-renewal and had my violin out for the $234 it would cost me to extend for another year. Lo and behold, after speaking to a 2nd person, I am getting another year at $99! I am “saving” $135 – woo hoo!

Speaking of BMI, take a gander at this article from The New York Times. I suppose this is what 50_roses was talking about in her comment.

We don’t really get a season of autumn per se here in southeast Texas. At some point in October you begin to notice it’s not sweltering outside. Around Christmastime some trees on the streets here and there turn color. Crisp and cool doesn’t happen. Nevertheless there are certain small nudges that you notice, such as a little bit more of a fresh breeze sometimes. In honor of the changing seasons, in theory at least, I wore CdG Daphne today. Like others here, I like to recognize the fall with something that has a bit of spice and amber. Haven’t worn this in awhile and I had forgotten how very orange-y it is. I love that aspect of it!

There are lots of happy folk here today – some of you love the approach of autumn and I’m equally delighted by spring. I’m looking out at a beautiful sunny morning, which is a nice change from yesterday. It was cloudy and very windy, our usual Saturday walk around the waterfront was hard work.
I’ve got a bit of housework to do to prepare for my mother’s visit in a week or so. She’d never comment, but I want to have everything nice. In the spirit of spring cleaning, I’m wearing AG’s Le Chèvrefeuille.

Woke up to 52F and a golden sunrise for an early morning walk. However, the Sun was not quite over most of the trees and so it was rather chilly the whole way. In fact, I was downright cold for the first 10 minutes, as a reward for saying “nah” to a jacket. But I did get a few moments of probably my favorite weather sensation, chilly air and warm sun. Generously sprayed Coco edp in honor of the change and it was delightful in the crisp air, though it did not match my lemon yellow, short-sleeved polo shirt :D. I will probably wear Shalimar more this fall; I need to get the flankers in rotation so MT and I can spend time together.

Sampling Complicated Shadows today and it’s wonderful! I am behind on the last couple years of releases from 4160 Tuesdays so I ordered a bunch of samples and am working my way through them. I tried Fluffy Lemon Top and Hammersmith Tea & Biscuit in the last week too and think I may need FBs of all of them. 😅 🍋 🍨

For those who have tried the Clouds series, which one is your favorite please? I did not participate in original crowdfund for Clouds…don’t think I was subscribed to their emails and it wasn’t on my radar…but I wish I did had! Lament that oversight but I do have a sample of the original Clouds which is wonderful. I love Both Sides of Clouds too. I didn’t realize Fluffy Lemon Top is part of the series when I ordered the sample either.

I’m wearing Tauer Lonestar Memories on a hazy day. We’re heading to my BIL’s 50th birthday party barbecue in his yard and the fragrance choice seemed to fit. Not sure what the weather is going to do today with the smoke cover so I have many layering options, including my long down coat. I hate being cold😬

I generally wear a hodgepodge of fragrance all year but Calypso’s sotd reminded me how much I like Daphne. I prefer big fragrances because nothing lasts on me. Nuit de Bakelite, Lampblack and Rien are a few notable exceptions😊

It’s the last day of high heat here, and I am looking forward to temps in the 70’s next week. I got ink on my pants on Wednesday and after trying to get it out I was left with a big blue stain instead of a small black one. I went to TJMaxx to get new pants (I have a one out, one in closet policy) and success! A nice linen blend that just skims my ankle. I wore Chypre Mousse to go with my mossy green nail color. The new pants are green, too.

Enjoying my leisurely Saturday. I went on a drive with my family this morning, we had yummy breakfast sandwiches and tater tots. Then we walked to a terrific bookstore where I picked up a used copy of Klara and the Sun. SOTD is Nightingale.

Like MossyBerry, I’m looking forward to wearing my Shalimars this fall. Especially all the millesime flankers, in anticipation of the new one. I’m also looking forward to wearing my spicy scents, like Arabie, Jungle l’Elephant, and African Leather.

I am looking forward to wearing the Shalimars, the Muglers and LVEB L’Extrait. Also Dune and Coco. ( I am the rare person that prefers Dune in the winter)

For the transition, I like Yesterday Haze and Slow Explosions from Imaginary Authors, PdN New York, more Shalimar, more Coco. Wearing Onda VdE today and reveling in it. It’s a very “deep” perfume if that makes sense. Every time I wear it, it’s just a bit different than the last time. She’s moody. I guess that’s why we get along. Hope everyone is having a relaxing Sunday. ✌🏼

I don’t have much for transitional fragrances in my samples here. I’ve got some deep winter stuff (Ummagumma, Felanilla, Eau de Fröhliche), and some straight up summer stuff (Jardin sur le Nil, You or Someone Like You). Today I went for Bogue Mem; the sample’s about finished off. It’s somewhat transitional? Along with Paestum Rose and Sienne l’hiver, and Lyric is nicely transitional, too.

Summer appears to have officially ended here, like a light switched off. Yesterday it was 30C and we were sitting outside at the local wine festival enjoying the weather and the wine. From here on out it seems highs will be just under 20C and lows will be in the single digits (!). Today was rain and more rain, with a bunch of storms sweeping through. I’m still not used to thunderstorms and how quickly they pop up. I grew up with them, but we don’t get them at all at home.

A very nice day with white clouds and sun, on the fresh side, 20C. I’ve just made a mozzarella omelette, I rarely eat eggs but needed a little bit of protein all of a sudden in my vegetarian diet, eaten with two slices of toast and dessert is fresh strawberries. I chose By Terry Flagrant Delice this morning, an original fig with a pronounced almond facet instead of the proverbial coconut and tonight it’s iPdF Vaniglia del Madagascar, my favorite vanilla along with Laura Mercier Eau gourmande vanillé.

Nowhere near Autumn temps here today. All my weather apps are saying it’s close to 90 this afternoon, and more is on the way for at least a week. So my transitional perfumes might have to wait a little longer for skin time.

When the weather does cooperate, I am looking forward to wearing Aromatics Elixir, Wrappings, and my older bottles of Samsara EdT/EdP. Who knows what else will work in this different climate?

Wore my new vintage Dune today. So beautiful. And it triggered ambition! Changed the sheets, 3 loads of laundry, ran the dishwasher, got my next knitting project (a simple shawl of multi-autumnal colored yarn) started, swapped out my summer purse for my winter purse, just lots of little tidying things! Gonna have crab cakes for dinner…we are watching Slow Horses, which is dreary and violent and painful, but so well done, can my look away..,

yay for new-old perfume and renewed mojo. 😊 I love old Dune, the sandalwood is excellent!

My favorite shawl pattern is Reyna by Noora Backlund. I’ve knit it a few times with variegated sock yarn.

I hope your new shawl project is a fun one.

I loved the Slow Horses books (can’t wait for the next one) but the violence is easier to read than watch, I could not make it through the first episode. Some day when I chill I will watch it!

    sotd = 4711 + sweat 💦😅🌡️

The past three days have been all about keeping cool during the heatwave in the southwest US.

I’ve worn 4711 EdC and Guerlain Eau de Fleurs de Cedar on repeat. When I need a change I switch to Apres l’Ondee, a favorite cologne-adjacent scent.

My house has had repeated power outages and Internet outages since Thursday. It’s all feeling a bit surreal. 🙃

But perfume and perfume talk help! Hope all of you wonderful NSTers are doing well this weekend.

    Monday, Monday…

It’s overcast and a bit humid so I’m thinking some rain might be on the way. It’s weird in the valley here because weather will be heading directly for us, then go north or south around us. Don’t know if this is a typical weather pattern for valleys or what…It’s a bit odd.

Wearing SmellBent Smoked Ambergris today. I’m reviving up for fall and cool weather! Vroom vroom!

    SOTD is Zara Romance d’Iris.

I am wearing Epona today, and loving it. It will be a great cold weather scent, I think,
So Adorable Hubby and I are contemplating a trip. All my European friends here, if we are driving on the A7 from Bingen am Rhein to Saintes-Mairies-de-la-Mer, on the coast south of Arles, Google says this is a 9 hour drive so I would like to stop halfway and break up the drive. Looks like Dijon is about half-way. Is this a reasonable plan? Where is a nice little spot before or after the city where we could stop, have nice bite and a relaxing evening? Or is there a better way than straight down the interstate equivalent? We plan on staying several days at Bingen, and several days at Saintes-Maries. Would it be better to take a train? I drove around Spain and France in the 70’s, but that was a different time. Any advice and suggestions appreciated.

Cloudy but warm here today. Still felt like summer around lunchtime. I don’t think I will get any rain but it would be nice to have some.

SOTD = back in Soft Focus again. I’m getting a savory note that I did not notice yesterday. So it’s either the salt or the chili (pepper). Maybe I will end up getting 2 travel sprays from Fzotic?

This weekend’s theme for fragrance fit the weather perfectly—it finally cooled off enough to wear denim and a sweater on morning walks. I pondered what made a “transitional” fragrance for me each morning and night and came up with this: A) creamier white florals (like Miller Harris Tubéreuse, which is simply much too buttery for summer) and B) soft ambers (like Astier de Villette’s Tuscan or Perfumer H Smoke & White Smoke). The ambers are particularly cozy. Thank you!
