Tuesday scent of the day 8/20

Posted by Robin on 20 August 2024 115 Comments

It's Tuesday, plus National Lemonade Day and World Mosquito Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I arrived home last night after a week of vacation, and now I'm looking at a day of laundry, chores and errands, wearing Guerlain Vetiver. Tea at the moment is Tali's Masala Chai from Art of Tea.

Reminder: 8/23 will be Cypress Friday...wear a fragrance with a cypress note.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Louis Vuitton LV By The Pool teapot ("...creative reinterpretation of one of Louis Vuitton’s most iconic signatures. Finely rendered in blue on extra-white Limoges porcelain, its mosaic-like pattern of Monogram Flowers is styled after a motif from the House’s ready-to-wear Resort collection") is $645.

National Lemonade Day! I am actually drinking lemonade right now (to keep kidney stones at bay: I was instructed to drink half a cup of lemon juice a day, which I turn into 2 litres of lemonade, which has my dental hygienist in a state of despair — she wanted me to drink the whole half cup in one go and then brush my teeth, which not a chance — but as I told her, I can get dentures, but I cannot go through that again). I sure wish I still had some Fendi Life Essence, which always reminded me of a frosty glass of lemonade. But instead I’m wearing SL Fumerie Turque, because….

After all these years I finally got some decanting supplies! First thing I did was make multiple vials of the two SL bell jars I got in Paris almost 15 years ago but hardly ever opened because I was afraid of contaminating them. They’re still in perfect shape, no evaporation or decomposition at all, and now that I have my own decants, I don’t need to worry about them any more. I sort of went nuts and made decants of every single thing I have that’s in a pour bottle, and some in spray bottles just to have them handy, especially when we travel next. I didn’t even know until recently that you could buy decanting spray caps with long nozzles, so you can pop the sprayer cap off a bottle, attach one of these, stick the nozzle into the vial, and fill it with no mess at all. A game-changer!

    Hello.
Sotd is Florabloom Forte. Gentle tuberose with a touch of coconut.
Went to TWG to pick up some tea leaves – T6175 Macaron Noir to be exact. There was a Macaron Noir candle by the cashier and it smelled delicious so I knew I had to order the tea. I also picked up 2 500g golden tea caddies to store my leaves / as kitchen decoration. They also have 1kg size caddies which I have no use for but verrrrry tempted to get because it’s pretty.

Robin, hope your week away was relaxing and rejuvenating!

We had some pretty rough storms yesterday and this morning-wowza! Just gorgeous cool air, no smoke, views go on forever! Just lovely. Still, expecting it to heat up around 10-11am and then the A/C is going back on.

I’m alone in the office today so I’m wearing Salomé from Papillon Perfumes. She’s a big girl and needs room to roam into every corner of the place. My doggo loves this one! For unimaginable reasons some people don’t really care for it…crazy, right? 🙃

Since it Teapot Tuesday, for the tea enthusiasts here I thought I’d share this little video of an artisan making a teapot, old school style.

It was, thanks! Saw the Berkshires for the first time in my life, and spent some time in other parts of New England. Seriously tempted to move north, I am done with the heat here.

Dusan, many thanks for that link, that was amazingly relaxing to watch and I will feature one of his teapots on a Tuesday.

Robin, I was just in the Berkshires (Williamstown) this week visiting my mom and sisters. It’s where I grew up, and if I ever leave Los Angeles, returning home to Berkshires would be my top choice. I’m fine with the heat and humidity of New England; it’s the cold that I don’t miss. Alas, my blood has thinned since moving west.

I hear you, I hate winter and loved the weather in San Diego during the time I lived there. I want to be on the East Coast now, near family, but the heat in SE Pennsylvania is becoming unbearable.

I did not get to see Williamstown…was staying in Stockbridge and also saw Lenox, Lee and Great Barrington (all briefly).

I grew up in New York and the line from James Taylor Sweet Baby James always runs through my head…

Though the Berkshires seemed dreamlike on account of that frosting, with ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go…

        That wistful, bittersweetness again.

Wow, there are a lot of cypress fragrances listed on Fragrantica. Hard to believe I only have a few! But today, it was 48F when I got up so I went with Montale Cafe Intense Ristretto. Lots of coffee, some rose and some notes I can’t identify.
Supposed to be back to the high 80s by the weekend so I’m not even ready for transitional scents yet. Don’t leave quite yet, summer!

Acqua Viva – its lemon and cypress notes make it an excellent choice for both the CP and National Lemonade Day.

I am sure mosquitoes play a part in the global ecosystem. I am sure. But I am not celebrating their day!!

This year must be the year of “Glannys buys expensive home appliances”. The fridge died. The technician said that while it is possible to repair it (replace the compressor), there are other age-related issues, so we will have to spend more and more money on replacing different parts, which means it’s better to buy a new one if we can. The fridge is over 20 year old, so it makes sense, but why does it all have to happen within one year? Sigh. It is hot again, so we are trying to prevent food from going bad while we are waiting for a new fridge.

20 years is a pretty good run for a refrigerator. But that’s an expense you sure didn’t need right now! Sorry to hear about it.

When the heat breaks, I start reaching for woodier scents . Today is Seville a l’Aube, orange blossom with heft!
Yesterday I got some retirement stuff sorted out for adorable hubby and myself. Trying to make this transition smooth and cheerful, rather than a stress fest.
Today, having located copies of each of our birth certificates, I am filling out the new passport forms. Tomorrow we will stuff up and got get new passport photos taken, and send off those applications! Then we can start narrowing down the first place we will go once they come to us. It’s good to have things to look forward to!
Love that teapot today! It fits into my mother-induced headspace of all teapots should be blue and white, while rejecting the toile adjacent decorations which can sometimes be too umm, toile-like, since I do not exactly live a cottage-core life… Hope everyone’s Tuesday meets or exceeds one’s positive expectations!

I’m wearing “3 Fleurs” from Parfum D’Empire for the first time. Golly, it’s so lovely. The three florals, (rose, jasmine, tuberose,) blend so beautifully together that it’s reminiscent of a classic abstract creation.

After a couple of days of biting cold wind from the south, snow flurries and rain I was out in the graveyard yesterday morning ( which is pretty shady and frosty first thing) and noticed one patch of sun on the wet grass which had attracted the attention of six rabbits, who were all just sitting and absorbing the heat. It had the look of a garden or art installation. Once they sensed me they all hopped away and hid under the cracked and broken concrete grave-slabs. The leaves on the chestnuts are beginning to open now but most of the trees are still without leaves. Another month or more for some. Wearing Marrakech Intense. Thanks for all the birthday wishes the other day.

    Testing Tuesday!
I did a quick Johannesburg trip after work today, picked up my long awaited Iris Palladium(pretty good iris in the opening, not entirely thrilled with the ambroxan-vibes in the heart and drydown, but still happy to add it to the iris-stash!)
I tested Atelier des Ors Iris Fauve which was unimpressive.
Also tried the “viral” Kajal Lamar and Aican(mostly boring)
Tested two Penhaligons in the portraits collection again because the other day I tested one which had a beautiful coffee-tobacco note, but I could not detect it today, maybe my nose was overloaded by that time.
Also tested Vanille Supermassive, the new Amber extrait and something from BDK which was somewhat forgettable.
Always fun to try all the new shiny things, and a relieve when they are not lemmings!
SOTD was a mix of dregs from tuny sample vials of Sale Gosse,Pour un homme de Caron,B683 and Encelade.
It was a very fragrant day indeed!
    XO’s✌🏻🌹

            What would Donatella think?

I don’t even go to stores much anymore as I continue to downsize.
A few weeks ago, I did go to the Chanel counter for a new bottle of foundation and sprayed on Gabrielle for the first time, which I really liked. I also sampled Jo Malone Hinoki & Cedarwood. The scent didn’t last but what seemed like a few minutes.

It’s a cool morning here in Seattle and I’m wearing Ormonde Woman. I think it fits the cp theme even if it doesn’t specifically have cypress as a note. A reviewer on Fragrantica said she finds Woman to be a “continuation of a lineage of Blue Grass to Coriandre to Aliage to Ormonde Jayne Woman”, which I particularly liked as my mom’s signature was Blue Grass!

I have a few options for this week’s CP but today I’m not CP compliant in Fracas. A great empowering and uplifting scent.
The teapot in the picture is very pretty, but far too expensive.

I’m wearing Chanel Gardenia. I ran into Target for a minute and it was full of college students buying stuff for their dorm rooms. I’ve never seen so much ramen at Target before either, pallets of the stuff!

I went thru a semester of PBJ three times a day using eating a gallon of coop peanut butter on 50 cents a loaf day old bread. Splurged on jam. Those were the days…

Oh but there are more ramen choices these days! The key is to add whatever you want to it.

I’m non-compliant as well, wearing the obscure Daniel de Fasson from 1990, a big animalic bite-y (is it civet?) floral spice thing that no one ever writes about or wears, it seems. The same bottle was later used for a Paris Hilton fragrance. I really like it but can see how it bombed, in the minimalist era that CK1 and other aquatics were ushering in. This frag is the big opulent 80s with shoulder pads and dripping jewels.
On another note, I just read the Oppenheim book about how Creed fragrances manufactured their history shamelessly (they date to the 1970s/80s, & *not* the 1760s) and basically stole, ahem, sweet-talked Pierre Bourdon into GIVING Olivier Creed his amazing formulas which big multinational fragrance companies had rejected due to stupidity and a desire not to offend anyone with anything remotely interesting. Creed then claimed he’d created the fragrances himself and was a 6th generation perfumer to royal courts and movie stars and made hundreds of millions off the juice. The firm was bought for $1billion by a hedge fund recently. I like and own several early Creeds (Angelique Encens & several others) but the hype surrounding them is insane.
The book is also filled with all sorts of interesting gossipy factoids and history. I did not know that the co-founder of Comptoir Sud Pacifique also co-founded Montale and Mancera and has a bit of a checkered past himself counterfeiting Gaultiers. (the author dug up court cases in France). I’m sure the book was legally vetted with a fine tooth comb or at least I hope it was.

I read one page of the Cliff’s Notes version and I have to say that Creed spun quite a yarn with all the lies.

Wow, that’s so interesting! And apparently pretty easy to do.
Side question: I have been looking at Montale lately and Mancera comes up a lot. I know it’s under the Montale umbrella but how do they differ or compare? I’ve only tried a few from Montale and no Mancera. You are a knowledgeable person to ask 😉

Alas, I’m not, ringthing. I’ve never tried a Mancera and only a verrry few Montales. Years ago when oud first became a thing, I really liked Montale’s Black Aoud, rubber band-aid top note and all. And I know the Montale coffee frags have a lot of fans. The book was quite focused on Creed, and the little side trip into the founder of CSP, Montale, and Mancera was just to show that Olivier Creed is not the only dubious fellar in this industry. And BTW I could never understand the cult of Aventus, but then I don’t care much for most acquatics. I’m clearly in the minority.

Kinda warm today with a high temp of 96 here. But things are on a downward trend for the next 10 days, which is reassuring. It will be nice to get down to “average” temps.

No perfumes with cypress in them for me. So it’s going to be whatever I want to wear for the CP.

SOTD = back in Nahema again. It’s a lovely warm weather rose perfume. I sprayed more today, which made a little difference; got some notes that I didn’t see yesterday. 🌹🌹

I noticed a honeyed note this morning when I applied. That was something new. Still got the powder, spices, and rose later on.

I get reminded of what “average” temps should be on the local newscast. It’s been running about 7 – 10 degrees above this summer.
