Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ open thread, mid August 2024

Posted by Robin on 17 August 2024 215 Comments

We're more than halfway through August, and we're trying to stay in the moment with our standard open thread poll.

Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the last perfume you decided not to try after reading something in a poll here or elsewhere, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Third Saturday in a row I’ve swung by the Lush in the mall to see if they ever got those limited-edition body sprays, third week in a row of nothing. (I could ask the staff, I suppose, but they generally don’t know anything, no fault of theirs, plus I try to avoid them — they swoop down like vultures, again no fault of theirs.) I’m not going to order any of them online without trying it first, so I guess it wasn’t meant to be.

Today I’m in Fragonard Eau du Séducteur, a silly name for quite a nice scent.

Yeah, they do swoop in like vultures. My Lush store is tiny and I avoid it for that very reason. ☹️

I stand outside the door and ask for a container of Sleepy lotion.
To go inside guarantees a headache for the remainder of the day.

**whispers”* I can’t shop in Lush stores at all, the wall of scent gives me a headache, too! 😆

The samples I ordered from Luckyscent came, and I wore Epona yesterday afternoon. It is spicy, floral, leathery in a refined uni-sexy way, and while I was not immediately fascinated, I did keep smelling my hand. I want to try something else today, but I am looking forward to giving it a full day test ride. (Ha, see what I did there? Epona, horse, ride…oh, I am so witty right after my first cup of coffee!) I expect that Epona will be a good fall/winter candidate – it does seem to have some heft to it, if you know what I mean, and just thinking about this now, I want to go smell it again. I think it will grow on me. But today, I will try some one of the several iris-forward samples I got. I sniffed them all, and yep, iris. Afraid Iris Makilan (sp??) is a no go- I felt that I detected the dreaded, to me, hint of allergy trigger tobacco, but we will see. I also am out of night cream, and since Google became a pay for play shopping aggregator, it is almost useless for doing the sort of product reviews I used to waste time ( 🙂 ) doing. Anyone have a super-favorite night cream good for “mature” skin, fine lines, dark spots, general “looking brighter, feeling plump and refreshed in the morning” product? I have been using a Philosophy product, which is pretty effective on skin, but migrates into my eyes and makes them burn, so I am ready to move on. I used one of the Lancome ones for years, until that dreadful reformulation a year or so ago – I was one of the people who thought it smelled terrible and got red blotches for my money. I now won’t buy anything without smelling it first!

I highly recommend Paula’s Choice moisturizers and currently use her Skin Recovery Replenishing Moisturizer at night. (My skin is dry and has fine lines but no deep wrinkles … yet.) Her line is mostly online sales, although I think some of her stuff might have an in-store presence. There are many, many moisturizer products in her line, some of which might suit your skin better, and she does samples of nearly everything, so you can read and experiment before committing. Good luck with the search!

Thank you so much for the Epona update! I’m looking forward to trying it but last I heard it was sold out here in the US.

As far as skin concerns go I second SheriG above. PC has affordable efficacious skin care. As for the dark spots, you will something to specifically target them (like a Vit C or other specialty ingredient) but nothing will work unless you wear a high SPF religiously. PC has a great combo moisturizer, SPF 50, with other added skin care ingredients. I’ve used it for years and only stopped because I was looking for a tinted sunscreen, then fell down the K-Beauty rabbit hole. The website can be a bit overwhelming but you can look up products based on you specific skin issues, which will bring up a host of products to target it. Will also add some type of retinol is a must, especially as we age. Too much info, I’m sure but WHOOP, there it is! 🤣

OH, thanks, Deva. I remember you discussing some of the Korean stuff. I had a Taiwanese co-worker for a while, who was so sweet – she would bring me samples of stuff she used because she perceived me to be not nearly concerned enough about the state of my skin! Her skin, of course, was immaculate. But the things she gave me are unavailable here in the states, and I have no idea how to find any of them on-line – language barrier and what not. Do you have any Korean products that you could suggest I try?I am willing to explore. Sorry for sidetracking this discussion, Robin!

Tons of K-Beauty stuff available here now. Some in very mainstream stores like Ulta and some online at sites like YesStyle. One of the best ways to decide where to start is to watch some Derm recommended skin care for your specific skin issue. If they’re just pushing their own brand, skip it. You want objective educated opinions. There are many Derm MD’s on YouTube and instagram that will review a certain product, a line in general, or focus on a specific skin problem and talk about various products and therapies. It’s time consuming, yes, but it’s better than wasting a bunch of money on products that are 100% hype and 0% science. Plus you’re educating yourself which is precedes! Most high end skin care is a waste of money and you’re paying for the name. IE: la mer skin care is exorbitantly priced and most MD’s will say it’s a complete waste due to lack of active ingredients or that these ingredients are at the tail end of the list and therefore useless.

I linked 3 videos below from derm MD’s on the subject of dark spots. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

          Also, sorry Robin!

You can find Korean and all other types of Asian products including skincare at YesStyle.com. I got this info from Deva. Right now I’m just trying some out and so am not sure how effective they are, but I can definitely say I love the sunscreen from Beauty of Joseon. It’s SPF 50 and it’s very light and blends in easily, and does not make my face feel like it’s wearing plastic wrap the way most other SPF creams do. Not expensive, either. If you order from them it can take some time, just be advised.

Ooh, skincare! One of my favorite topics. My very favorite night cream ever is Kate Somerville K8 peptide, but ouch the price is crazy. I just finished Oskia bedtime beauty boost and liked that quite a bit. More affordable options I’ve liked are Super Healthy Skin Ultimate Anti-Aging cream from Beauty Pie and Moisture Surge Intense 72-Hour lipid replenishing hydrator from Clinique. Also, my favorite skin care guru Caroline Hirons has her own line- Skin Rocks which has a moisturizer that is very nice and a rich moisturizer- that one I haven’t tried but plan on it this winter when dry season sets in.

It has more of a traditional “lotion” like texture than the original one which is more of a gel.

Iris Malikhan didn’t work for me either. There was something in it that turned on my skin. Usually, it would be a type of musk, but I don’t see that musk is in it.

I swear by Clinique as I have used it for years. They have products for all skin types. I would definitely check into that line.

Agree. Their dramatically different moisturizing lotion is my one holy grail skin product. I like to dabble in different cleansers, serums and night moisturizers, but I’ve been using that lotion everyday for over 35 years and it has never failed me.

Old lady here, with dry skin and fine lines, love the products from Biossance. Not too pricey, good on my sensitive skin, and available in large sample size variety packs so you can try out different items. I love the oils (not greasy) and the eye creams. Also, the straight up squaline oil really helped heal a surgery scar. Good luck!

I’m wearing No 5 L’Eau for it’s sheer prettiness today. I found a great deal online for a mini of vintage Coco parfum that’s being delivered today, that should make an easy transition.

And I’m just about giving up on losing the last 10 pounds. I’ve been in a plateau for months and really, I’ve met my goals except reaching that magical number, so the total lost is at 90lbs. I’m ok with that.

This weight loss started with my daughter, who gave me a talking to about my health. I was pre diabetic and my joints have all taken a beating. Now my A1C is normal and I can walk! More important than looks, to me. At my age, my birthday suit looks like a deflated balloon lol so who cares.

I’m in Prada Un Chant d’ Amour from my newly arrived bottle. It smells just as lovely as I remember. The box reads Tester so maybe that’s why I got such a good deal. Regardless, it was about one fifth of what it retails for so I am extremely pleased I found it.

It’s overcast but my daughter and I were up and to the farmers market anyway. Yesterday we did her back to school, or more appropriately, off to college shopping. I’m really enjoying having her home.☺️ I love coming home to a not empty house and having dinner together as a family. Last night she airplayed her phone to the tv and gave us a slideshow of her favorites from the 2 months she spent working at camp. She had such a good time. I’m so happy for her to have these experiences. I do have just a little bit of fomo, and earlier this week I told her I was tempted to just quit my job in the spring and spend my summer as camp nurse. Her immediate response was “god mom, no! That would actually really suck!” 🤣 okay, fair enough, point taken. I’m keeping it as my “retirement” plan though.

I’m still commando and am not sure what I’ll put on after my shower. Today is my birthday! and later on I’ll be going out with a friend who also has an August birthday. We always celebrate together and plan on going to a very nice Italian restaurant. I’ve been feeling a bit down since my family is basically gone now after my brother’s death, and I would often go to spend time around my birthday up in Michigan to go out with him, his wife, and my parents for a fun fish dinner. And my mom would make me key lime pie–my favorite! But, things change, and we go on as best we can.

SOTD appears to be orange oil, as I’ve been oiling the woodwork in the camper this morning. About 90% done but taking a cool down break right now. Yesterday I started washing and waxing the outside of the camper and truck (a HUGE undertaking!) but only got about 25% done before the sun became murderous. I’m trying to work WITH the sun by staying in areas that happen to be in the shade as the sun treks along, but the sun is NOT cooperating! So much sunshine all the time is really a PITA. (Said only me, ever!)

Also, the beading circle has now enlarged and another lady has joined us. I will admit that having people come to my camper during my off time and knock, knock, knocking to ask me something about whatever or just walking in is slightly annoying. I like clearly delineated social and private time with good solid boundaries. I guess some would consider me a *biotch.* 🤷🏻‍♀️ As mentioned before, one of these lovely ladies has beginning stages of dementia and I’m constantly repeating, repeating, repeating everything, which is tiring. Thankfully, the other lady has full faculties and has been very crafty her whole life, so I can start her off and then she flies. I have a sneaky suspicion the the forgetful lady is subconsciously upset because I invited another participant. Sometimes you just can’t win.

Anyway will probably go with Shalimar Body Creme after a shower.

Happy weekend to all and please, take all my sunshine away! 😅

You don’t even have to ask twice. Yes, please, give me all of the sunshine!🌞
I can understand your annoyance. I worked on my old unit for almost 15 years and they had their own Facebook page and I got lots of peer pressure that I just had! to get on Facebook and join. I was like, nope, I’m good. Work is work and life is life. I like those solid boundaries also.

Oh, I don’t think that’s my responsibility at all. She has a husband who does everything so apparently they have found a way to work through this and remain independent, functioning and safe. I have no clue if she’s even been diagnosed by an MD, but being a nurse and working with all ages, newborn to geriatric for 30+ years, I’d confidently say she’s in the early stages of dementia. But, it’s certainly not my place to bring the subject up to either of them.

A lovely 24C day and eating two nectarines. Today I picked Baiser volé edt and enjoyed it, I’m halfway through my 50ml bottle and it’s discontinued, I also have the essence but it’s a vanilla bomb best in winter, also discontinued, maybe when the edt is finished I will get the edp. Tonight it’s Jean-Louis Scherrer edp which I should wear more often.

In other news, I knew August was a month of news subscription renewal. I managed to unsubscribe from the auto renewal for Barrons, which I only read perhaps 10-15% of the time and even at $1 per issue, it was not worth it. The Wall Street Journal was quite expensive at $235-ish, but I held off on unsubscribing because I still have until early September to do so. My big surprise was for the New York Times which went from $5 per week to … take a guess … $2 per week! I had to have the CSR repeat this again as I never would have thought. Anyway, $2 per week ALSO got me unfettered access to games (did not think I had to pay for it), Cooking, Athletics and Wirecutter! I thought I won the lottery. With the $52 and the $156, I almost have enough to pay for another full year of WSJ!

After a series of Trump positive, Democrat bashing articles, I saw people writing letters to the editor explaining in detail why they were unsubscribing. Then my renewal price dropped also, Not to be political, but now I write letters to the editor critiquing the journalism. It’s fun. Once in a while one of the reporters responds.

I recently subscribed to the NYT. I had resisted for the longest time not because I thought it was expensive but I feel I am drowned in information already. I have to say, I think it is quite worth it for the cooking alone. I love the cooking app in which one can mark recipes for the future. Of course, the news is good also and the news app is better organized than the one for my local paper.

I converted my local paper to an online subscription except weekends when an actual paper is delivered. Most weekdays, no one was reading the paper and it would get recycled at the end of the week. I do like a local paper to keep abreast of local news. At work, I find I am about the only one who reads the paper.

I too, miss my doggies. Then my sister tells me about the latest escapade at her house and that puts my doggie yearning on hold for a while. A couple days ago, right before she had to help guide a tour through some local ranches, one of her dogs got skunked and ran into the house, tore around through every room, throwing up everywhere, before they could catch him. The people on the tour commented. Her house still smells. She has scheduled a profession carpet cleaner to come in and do something to help- all her carpets were replaced this spring. Just saying.

Mostly by default, all our doggies have been adults when we got them. Our realtor got us our first dog (I sold you a house, now how about a dog my friend has to give up to go with it?). Then my father in law (this dog followed me home as I walked with my dog, do you want her or else I’ll take to the shelter?). And the last 2 were acquired after seeing videos of languishing pooches in shelters sent to me by my sister and a friend. Their past can be a mystery, but they’ve all been wonderful and we’ve skipped those troublesome first months/year, though there has definitely been some digging, chewing, getting skunked, etc. Same with our cats — all adults, which we are told are harder to find homes for. Our last cat passed away at 16 this year. Big orange tabby, a female, which is unusual for the gingers who are usually male. There may be a new adult orange cat in our future.

My SOTD is Lann-AE’l Lostmarch, a small indie Breton France parfumeurie. This was all the range on MakeupAlley about 15 years ago and it’s so pretty and soft and soothing, all milky sweet cereal grains with a touch of citrus and other fruit. Perhaps one of the early gourmands and ahead of its time. I looked online and it’s still available from France but I never hear people talking about the brand ahd I don’t know if the composition is still the same.

I fell in love with Lostmarc’h Iroaz years ago, and finally was able to obtain a bottle through Suzan Becker, who runs the Shop In France website/service (no affiliation, of course). I gather it wasn’t easy for her to get either, but I’m happy to now have it. Fwiw, the juice in the FB seems unchanged from the years-old sample.

Wearing Queen by Queen Latifah today. Yummy! Also, had to put the kibosh on procrastination by washing my makeup brushes. I have a too many. Time to downsize that department. Meanwhile, I will continue to procrastinate in other areas of my life. Again, (still) very hot and sunny today. Some amazing skies yesterday as a band of thunderstorms came through. Looked to be the End of Times but it mostly went north of us, luckily. I live in fear and dread of hail storms. 😬

Wearing some Lyric body butter and might apply a smidgen of the extrait version a little later. I have no idea why Amouage pretty much did away with the body stuff. When I use the lotions and body wash, I feel wealthy.

Have we ever done a community project on what Bittersweet would be like?
Personally, it would be something to see us all in a room together devising such a scent.
It is a word that comes up a lot for many of us.

It’s my birthday today ( almost birthday twins with Calypso) and I’ve woken up to a cold, dreary day with rain and possible snow…so I might treat myself to a trip to the florist for flowers. It’s also my wedding anniversary, 26 years. We tend to be a bit low fuss in this household ….maybe a bit too low fuss, so it’s a DIY event. For perfume, not sure. I share the date with Coco Chanel but am thinking something yellow and bright, Ostara might do it.

      Happy Anniversary.
I share your DYI and low-fuss approach to my birthday and our anniversaries. When I turned 5, my family threw me a birthday party and I was so mortified when they sang HB to me that I crawled under the dining room table and refused to come out until they stopped. Still feel that way.
(Happy to put on dog and pony shows for the birthdays and anniversaries of others, however).
SOTD is some very old Chanel No. 19 splash EdT. It’s a bit musty at first but the notes eventually slay the must and shine forth in a lovely way. I wonder if it might develop better if I decanted a bit into a spray vial.

For the CP I wondered whether we ever did “jolie laide”. Perfumes with some less pretty aspects that render them even more beautiful.

I wore Jubilation 25 yesterday and Sacrebleu Intense today.

I went to see my parents on Saturday and spent most of the weekend being stuck in traffic. Lots of people going on holiday or coming back. All in all a pretty exhausting trip, but they seemed to be doing ok, and were very glad to see me, so there is that.

I also managed to squeeze in a visit with a friend who has lived in the US for decades. We met over 50 years ago in primary school. Friendships like that are special.

Ah, I was planning on doing a full day examination of Epona today but it is chilly and Oeliettes Rouges called to me – I must have sprayed the outside of the cap at some point. So now i am in carnationy goodness to fill out various forms – hubbies Medicare application, our new Passport applications because bothour passports are lost in the detritus of the Covid lockdown, and it is easier to get new ones. LOL. Although, looking at the forms, that has been a error of judgement.

Snow flurries and a biting wind kept me inside most of yesterday, but it did clear up enough towards dusk to give a view of the rising super moon over the harbour, huge and orange/ pink over the icy blue water. Still cold but should be sunny today. Wearing Bracken woman, kind of fresh and sporty, which is not really what I associate with Amouage. I have my trusty sheepskin trapper hat on, in bed, waiting for sunrise and then walking Bat the dog.

Profumum Roma Patchouli today. This is so beautiful (says the mostly hater of patchouli person) – looking forward to cool weather for wearing this more. It’s rich and woody and smooth with a dash of sweetness (but not sugary sweetness). Had a good weekend getting lots done – groceries, annoying chores like vacuuming out the car, changing mattresses, lots of laundry, paper organization. More housework today but I’m still in a happy place. Have a good Monday, all!

I have been trying to circle back to some perfumes I haven’t worn in a while and selected Estée Lauder Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia. I don’t have many white florals but this one is a gem.
