Wednesday scent of the day 8/7

Posted by Robin on 7 August 2024 112 Comments

It's Hump Day and National Lighthouse Day. Birthdays: Mata Hari, Louis Leakey, Ralph Bunche. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm taking points in Aedes de Venustas Corfu Kumquat.

Reminder: on 8/9, we're off to Greece! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in Greece, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to Greece, or that features a local ingredient, or ? [If you need more ideas, see Plants of Greek Myth links from Glanny's comment on Tuesday.]

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Ladies in Blue fresco ("...from the Palace of Knossos on the island of Crete. It depicts women with hairstyles similar to the modern ponytail and has been dated to as far back as 1600-1430BCE. Fragments of this frescoe was discovered by Sir Arthur John Evans at the start of the 20th century. It was then recreated by Swiss artist and archaeologist Émile Gilliéron. However, the validity of his reconstructions has long been debated. The fragments are preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, Crete") via Wikimedia Commons.

I am wearing Chanel 1932 edt, I forgot how beautiful this is, not very long lasting but pretty.
All of a sudden the weather feels like fall , I am not sure if I am ready for that.

I’m very much enjoying the cooler pre-fall temps after a brutal week of heat and humidity. Wearing Gourmand Coquin. 🙂

    Hello.
Sotd is Fenty. If they marketed this as what Rihanna smells like, then I wouldn’t believe it. Not that it’s bad (it’s a strong rose-patchouli with a handful of blueberries thrown in – read: safe and nice enough), it’s just not that special or glamorous or worthy of people exclaiming how great she smells in person (I read her signature is Kilian).
I planted 10 cherry stones in my garden around 2-3 weeks ago but nothing seems to be growing. I still have my fingers crossed but I think they most likely have failed. Sigh. I want a cherry tree… 🥺

The best way to grow cherries from pips/ seed is to plant them in trays or small pots filled with perlite ( a potting/ sprouting / growing mix). Make the perlite moist. Plant the stones and then put them in your fridge, vegetable crisper shelf, for three or four months until they sprout. Keep them moist. The cherries need the cold to sprout. When they eventually sprout let them grow and then re-pot into bigger pot, and keep doing this until they are 15-30cm. Then plant in garden. Always plant in pairs, so they can cross pollinate.

Some say the tree should be 60cm tall before planting in garden

Yesterday and this morning have been in the low 60s when I left the house after we had a big storm come through Monday night, and I am loving it! Summer has always been my favorite season but man, the heat and humidity this year has been incessant.
I’m in an old favorite Vanille Insensee. I have about a third of my 100 ml bottle left but the juice is looking very dark which leads me to believe it is suffering from evaporation. Time to use it or lose it. I’m going to see if I can thunk this bottle by the end of the year.

Speaking of seat heaters, there’s apparently a BMW where if you wanted to have the seat heaters in, you have to subscribe! The hardware is already there but it is turned on remotely. How crazy is this?

I bought 2 bottles of Vanille Insensee in 2013,one is in rotation and out of the box and the bub have never seen the light of day.The juice in the one I’m using has become dark brown, the other one is basically light straw-colored still. But they smell identical and the dark brown juice is still perfect!

I’ve noticed that perfumes with a notable vanilla content turn brown over time. I think it’s the nature of the beast.

I’m wearing Pulp, but it was a mistake. It’s too sweet and heavy for today’s triple digit heat index and high humidity.

Love todays header photo! As much as I would LOVE to go to Greece, I wouldn’t want to go right now. 😅

Still hot as Hades here but at least when the sun finally dips below the horizon it becomes much more tolerable and I can turn off my jet engine of an A/C.

As for perfume, I’m wearing JM Ginger Biscuit from a split a while back. Not exactly a summer scent but JM perfumes are so light and polite it works anyway. This is going to be paired with the two small No-Bake pumpkin cheesecakes I’ll be making after work in some vain attempt to rouse the God of Fall and bring some rain, cool weather, and cloudy skies to this high desert frying pan. The pumpkin cheesecakes will have a ginger snap crust, which is how I decided to tie everything together.

My Beading Buddy and I had a slight delay in our project Monday (it’s been very BUSY!) so we started (and almost finished) it last night. I’m 99.9% sure she hated the entire process though too polite to throw it at me! She did seem to have a satisfyingly good time packing up the almost done project and putting it out of sight 🤣 Quite certain she will stick with quilting, which is fine because she is an excellent quilter.

    Happy Hump Day!

I just received my ShiKai Shower Gel and decided to try it today. I can see why so many of you like it so much. I find the smell to be really nice and it is quite moisturizing. Enabler pins to Robin and someone else, but not sure which one of you it is😉

SOTD and Question of the Day-I am wearing Eau des Merveilles and noticed the other day people talking about the Elixir and the Ambre. Are they really different enough that you like having all of them? I know there is also an Eau Claire and and Eau Bleu as well. I really like the original and that seems sufficient to me. Just curious on other’s thoughts.

I agree. I liked the amber best of all of the iterations but in the end swapped them all away due to something in the far dry down that I disliked.

I really love the Elixir and think it’s much deeper, richer, and more orange-y than the original. I do have both, but in my case, the Elixir alone would probably be enough, because I really prefer it. It’s distinctive, but some people don’t like it because it’s a bit stronger and more spicy.

I got Elixir des Merveilles today and I’ve tried all the others in the line, except for Eau Claire des Merveilles.

I find them all different enough to justify owning more than one from the line. Where Eau des Merveilles is effervescent, L’Ambre is rich. As for Elixir, it is a perfect golden orange.

Hello fragrant friends ~ I have been off of posting for a bit.
Making big decisions, seeing my sister, getting dental work done…life stuff.

The big decision about work has been made. One year to the day – the last of of July one year ago when my team was laid off, I made it official to retire. Done and done with my financial planners blessing.

SOTD will be The Noir 29 lotion and fragrance. The landscaper is coming to redo my courtyard. YAY!

Encouraged by many here, I bought the Elixir des Merveilles, which I wore today.

I had previously only tested it on paper strips where it came across as camphorous, but on skin it is something else entirely. There’s no trace of camphor or any rough edges, just a perfect golden scent that blends deliciously with my skin for a sun-kissed effect.

Thank you to everyone who told me to go for it!

Yesterday, Northeastern Ohio had a vicious storm with tornado warnings. It was the 1st time that I had to go in the tornado shelter at work. I have been with my company for 18 years and never had to go in it. Customers were complaining about they wanted to just do their grocery shopping and go home. It was pitch black outside and with some nasty lightning and rain and all you could think about was your grocery list? It must be a rich person thing to be so oblivious about the things around you. Most people, myself included, don’t have electricity but I have a generator. I was able to take a shower and now in no 5 edp today.

SOTD was Narciso (White Cube) for the myth of Narcissus, which you all know.

However, the day turned out a bit hotter than I expected, so I took a quick shower and changed my scent in the late afternoon. SOTE is Histoires de Parfums 1828 Jules Verne. It has pine, which is associated with Pan, Dionysos, and Poseidon. There’s also a story about another nymph who was chased by a god and turned into a tree (a depressingly frequent story in Greek mythology). Bonus mythological reference: the description of “1828” mentions “Hesperides-like scents.”

Smoothie is white nectarines again, so I’m on a break from smoothies at the moment as summer fruits are plentiful and delicious.

I had an idea for the CP Friday but I’ve completely forgotten what that idea was, very annoying.

So today was Volupté which bloomed so nicely in the heat with its luscious fruits, apparently it was worn by Princess Margaret, I think it was a good choice on her part and rather democratic, I have a partial modern 100ml and a vintage 50ml and almost no difference, just vintage a bit more tenacious but the modern is hardly a wallflower, both were acquired very cheaply, it’s underrated imo. Tonight it’s AdP Profumo, their most elegant scent ever, I’ve used half of a 100ml bottle over the years but have a BUB as it is a top 10 for me, I feel lucky to have it as it’s become rare quickly after discontinuation and expensive too.

I’m wearing Hiris today, following Kanuka’s suggestion yesterday of Hermes.
I’ve realised that I was accidentally ahead of that on Monday when I wore 24 Faubourg.

I’m driving through Greece in a vintage roadster of sorts, wearing perfectly fitted driving gloves and smelling a mix of salty sea air and gasolime while I cruise down to the beach….
Santa Maria Novella Nostalgia for the win today.
    It’s Bulgari Black on a gasoline high.LoveLove.
Plus it’s difficult to decide whether either Italy or Greece have to most stunning scenery!

I love Nostalgia! Didn’t they discontinue this one? Bad perfume decision if they did.

Un Jardin a Cythere for the CP since it’s based on the island of Kythira in Greece. I honestly don’t think I’ve worn it since I got it in the split last year, but it’s really hitting the spot today. I just wish the lemon and pistachio combo lasted longer.

SOTD = Broken Anatomy Brain Dance

Woody, lightly spicy, citrusy and aldehylic – love, although questionable in longevity.

In other news, today is my mom’s 5th year death anniversary. Time really flew! I was on FaceTime with my sister last night when I mentioned that it is mom’s death anniversary today and I said it because it was National Root Beer Float Day yesterday and I remember getting same at a restaurant the night before she passed away. I still do miss her and I don’t think that will ever go away.

    Song of the Day: https://youtu.be/8MMVOcZzS6s

“People tell me I haven’t changed at all
But I don’t feel the same
And I bet you’ve had that feeling too
You can’t laugh all the time”

Hurray it’s raining here this afternoon!! There is the occasional lightning bolt, too, but that’s to be expected with a front moving thru. It’s currently right around 80 degrees F which is a pleasant cool down from yesterday’s 96. 🌧️☔💧

Aurora, it was even hotter where my reunion was than it has been in Colorado.

My trip recap is going to be rather long, so I will do that tomorrow. Today is about those perfumes I mentioned yesterday. On the outbound trip, I wandered around the Denver Duty Free store, and considered getting something from their Chanel selection since they had both No. 19 EdT and Cristalle Eau Verte.

But I did a bit of sniffing from some of the testers that were out before I decided. I did NOT like the new YSL Black Opium Over Red at all. Tooth-achingly sweet to my nose. Yuck!

Liked whatever version of YSL Libre I smelled. I think it might have been the Intense?

Then I got to the tester of Black Opium Neon. It’s really really good! Good enough that I got the 50mL bottle. Smelled white flowers and some coffee thru my mask.

The inbound trip was a 50mL bottle of Obsession for Women from the Salt Lake City Duty Free store. It’s not as potent as what I remember from back in the day, but 2 sprays on a test strip is more than enough. This one will have to wait until cool/cold weather, methinks.

SOTD = commando again, but wearing Bliss’ Grapefruit and Aloe Body Butter in the usual spots.

Colorado has been better off than Utah this summer. Monday’s expected high temp in Salt Lake City was a scorching 103. Hasn’t been that bad here.

Good news about the fires here. A lot of them were contained over the weekend. Air quality has been much better as a result.

Glad you have rain! And cooler temps. It’s such a relief when it finally happens. Can you believe that I have not sampled/smelled any of the Black Opium offerings?

Enjoy your new bottles! It’s fun getting vacation perfume.

Thanks Gail! If you like gourmand perfumes you can do much worse than Black Opium. 😉

So glad you got some rain!
And yay for your new goodies. I have the original Black Opium and think about getting a flanker.

Thanks lillyjo! More is coming this week. Hopefully it’s enough to put a dent into the drought here.

IMO, I would recommend that you test sniff any Black Opium flanker before you buy. Neither of the flankers I smelled were what I expected them to be.
