Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ open thread, early August 2024

Posted by Robin on 3 August 2024 176 Comments

Saturday is National Watermelon Day, Sunday is National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, Monday is National Couscous Day. We're marking all the food holidays with our usual open thread poll.

Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, what you're cooking and eating this weekend, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

I wish it wasn’t too hot to bake chocolate chip cookies — haven’t done that in years, and they’re so good freshly baked. Come to think of it, that might be why I haven’t. 🤣

My SOTM is Paris-Deauville, partly because I love it in the heat, but mostly because it will have faded by the time the post office delivers my new bottle of (pause to squeeeee) Au Delà Narcisse! I’ve already made a spot for it on the perfume shelf.

Oh my goodness, people — all of you who said Au Delà Narcisse was magical were spot on! Absolutely amazing scent that I will probably wear to death over the next few weeks. Two Fzotic soaps were also in this order, and I can’t decide which one to try first, Limonata or Toasted Lilac. I hear he’s working on an EDP version of Toasted Lilac that might be pretty great too.

Oh man, I am not great at comprehensive reviews of fragrances, but here goes: it starts off very green (like snapped-stems green) with a pronounced narcissus note. After 30 or so minutes, the green-ness retreats to the background a little and the scent becomes more of a classic floral chypre, with jasmine and orange blossom joining the narcissus, on an oakmossy, slightly ambery base. The sillage hangs about a foot off the skin, which is interesting — the whiffs I catch in the air around me are more complex and floral than if I press my nose to my wrist. The Fzotic website calls it “modern vintage” and I think that’s spot-on too.

Thank you to everyone who expressed concern about my mom. She spent one night in hospital, came home Friday afternoon and is just fine now. Other family came up to see her so I continue to be behind on everything, hope to catch up on comments Sunday.

Cooking all the great produce I bought from the farm right down my road which recently opened up a very small farm store that also has canned goods, body products, fresh pasta and homemade bread. I’ve been shopping a lot there because I feel strongly about supporting local businesses. Plus the fruit and vegetables are unbelievably delicious and pesticide free.

It sure beats having to wait until the Saturday farmer’s market which is what I’ve done for years! Plus when they are tending the farm they have self serve so even if the store isn’t open the produce is still for sale outside

Sydney is slowly getting back to her normal self but the vet is still waiting for the culture’s to see what adjustments to the meds are needed. Yesterday I wore the original Coco. I wore it because Chanel prices have gotten silly and it doesn’t smell like cocoa like the name suggests.

Today I am wearing Amouage Ubar today. Haven’t worn Ubar in forever.

    Happy weekend everyone!
Sotd is Bvlgari Chill & Sole layered with Magnifying Neroli. Smells like liquid holiday and sun beams; nice stuff. I don’t think I will buy them but if Santa puts them in my stocking I would be more than excited.
Went to Iconsiam (a new and gorgeous mall by the Chaopraya River) today. There is an amazing street food hall on the ground floor filled with countless stalls of delicacies and handicraft souvenirs. I spent 2 or 3 hours there alone no kidding! I did my tourist duty and bought so much souvenirs: Thai silk scarves, elephant themed trinkets, silver accessories, snacks!!!, wind chime…
Tomorrow will sadly be my last day, I do not want to go home yet!

I love all those foods! 🍉🍪🌾 No couscous emoji, of course, so wheat will have to suffice.
I am stealing a page from Robin’s book today and wearing the wonderful Azemour from my brand-new bottle! I couldn’t resist the code from BeautyHabit which *someone* mentioned here, and if I could remember who it was, I would award an enabler pin. ⭐️

I have a general question today. We’re going to a high school graduation party, so I got a tiny gift but want to put a check in the card, too. Her parents are good friends of ours. How much would be appropriate? We don’t have kids ourselves, so I’m pretty clueless. 🤓 TIA!

I originally was going to say $50.00 but cm8 has a point about being good friends and $100.00. If the small gift is expensive though, I go back to $50.00. Lol, I am no help!

I forgot that I had a question too. I recently bought a few shower gels from Lush and it has been about a week. I have not gotten any message about when they will be shipping this. Usually, you hear from places in a few days. Do they tend to be slow? I don’t know as it has been years since I ordered anything from them. TIA.

I get their monthly boxes automatically; sometimes the shipping is super late so there isn’t really any rhyme or reason to it. But their customer service is really good (in my experience).

Robin, I’m so happy to hear your mom is home and on the mend!

Today seems to be a very gourmand kind of day with all the edibles mentioned up 🔝. Also will add I just got an email from CSP introducing a new scent- watermelon, sandalwood, and amber…I’m curious to try it!

Sticking with the foodie theme, I went with Fils de Dieu (of course!) which everyone knows it one of my favorites.

I’m starting my next beading project Sunday, teaching a friend, neighbor, and co-worker an easy beaded wrap bracelet. We’re both doing our own colorways, so I’m excited to see how they differ. She is an absolute doll, about four foot nothing, weeble-wobble round, and sporting a pure white pageboy with a jaunty side barrette. One of those rare people who is just naturally lovely and kind. Not a fake bone in her body. She doesn’t know it but I’m planning on giving her a great big hug and squeeze, along with a smootch on her round little cheek before we go our separate ways. She has some very early signs of dementia (imo) and really can’t work on her own, but is getting along just fine with a very protective and caring husband. I may shed a tear or two when the season ends. It’s been a joy to work and hang out with her. ❤️

    Happy weekend to all!

I am at a conference, and it turns out there is Chanel boutique about three minutes’ walk from my hotel.

Which Exclusifs would you try? (“All of them” is not realistic.) I have 31RC and 28LP, plus a teeny tiny vial of Cuir de Russie. I love all three, but 31RC sometimes overpowers me. My favorite notes are iris and leather; I am coming around to rose.

Box of Eels? Le Lion? Misia?

It is yet another hot as hades day here, expected to last through tomorrow, then at last on Monday it will cool down. This is the longest extreme heat spell we’ve had here, a full 8 days. Normally we get 3 days in a row then a cool down. I feel sorry for those without AC, it is so bad with the high humidity. I’m inside under the AC wearing Amouage Dia. Would love to bake cookies but don’t want to turn on the oven….

    Smoothie is fresh strawberries.

Back to rather too cool temp for summer, 21C. I chose Jean Couturier Coriandre today and tonight I am in Miss Dior Chérie edp that I haven’t worn in forever. I have a partial bottle of the 2005 version, bought cheaply 8 years ago, around 50ml and a newish bottle of the 2011 version EDP which I prefer vastly and although blink and you would have missed it which is a shame, it’s a lovely fruity chypre, so that’s the version I’m wearing now.

I’m enjoying another quiet weekend, but I will have to get sufficiently motivated to go to the supermarket. That was supposed to be yesterday, but the car battery was flat. It happens quite often because we don’t use the car a lot, so we bought a battery charger a few years ago. The car should be raring to start this morning.
Perfume-wise, I’ll wear Mad Madame again, it’s still on my clothes from yesterday’s attempt to get to the supermarket.

Going old-school today with some vintage Paco Rabanne Pour Homme. I didn’t discover it until the mid ’80s, when I was in my early twenties. I knew next to nothing about fragrances for men, and I’d certainly never heard the word “fougère.” But I remember thinking how elegant I felt wearing it. I also remember a beautiful young woman telling me she loved it, and that she thought the shape of the bottle was very sexy.

Needless to say, I always wore it in her company.

I went to bbw for their sale today. I ended up getting one body spray for 6 dollars. Blueberry Bundt Cake. It reminds me of the BooBerry cereal from when I was a kid. I’m not too much of a food scent lover, but I will wear this when I am not in the mood for real perfume. Like today.
I really need to go through my perfume and figure out what to do with the one’s I don’t wear anymore.

I’m wearing Arquiste Indigo Smoke today in defiance of the horrible weather. I got tired of light summer scents. Yesterday I stopped at. Whole Foods to buy a bouquet for my mom. It’s on the way to her place. They had such a gorgeous array of leeks that I kept thinking about making vichyssoise. So today I went and bought all the ingredients! (To a different While Foods though, one closer to me.) I’m not much motivated to cook in this weather and won’t turn on my oven for months, but if I wait til tonight I can make this and blend it and then have it nice and chilled for tomorrow! I’m excited! I also got some of their dark chocolate cookies with chocolate chips and they’re really fudgy and good! I’m celebrating that holiday early.

I must say, it’s pretty delicious! I guess it ought to be considering how much butter and heavy cream have gone into it! I’m sharing the batch with a friend and will be delivering it to her house later this afternoon. The directions say to garnish it if I wish with some chopped chives, but I might use a bit of dill instead. I have some fresh dill on hand and think it might taste good and look pretty. The only problem with this dish is that it’s not all that beautiful looking if you want to take a nice picture of it. Must find a pretty bowl and then add the dill. Right?

Thunderboomies and rain where I am right now. I wish I could send a bit of the rain to the parched and thirsty western U.S. Wore Crystal Honey today, tomorrow I am planning Cashmere Aura, and then I am rounding it off on Monday with some Coco. But I may switch the Cashmere with Coco Mango rollerball from Auric Blends, I haven’t decided yet. The only store that carried that line closed shop a while ago and it was a big disappointment. Too hot here lately, and then I drove from the coast in to my dad’s where it is hot — 41 C the day before we arrived, and surprisingly a bit humid. Also lots of fire smoke. And he doesn’t have air conditioning. Sigh. It did cool off last night, though.

Drove 7 hours with the cat in the car yesterday; she was NOT happy to start but eventually accepted her fate and chilled out in the carrier. Fortunately they didn’t make me take her in for inspection at the border. It took her a night to warm up to her temporary home, but she seems good now. Lots to explore.

I’m realizing now that I took all my samples out of my travel toiletries bag and packed them with the decants in one of the big duffel bags, which I’m not going to dive into. (They are precisely packed to weigh just under 23 kg each.) So SOTD may be anything interesting I can find at the small Nordstrom here today.

No SOTD yet as I’m about to go out to sweat my tukus off. Did slap on some deodorant as a public service. 😅

I’ve been watching the journey my mail has taken the past week and a half- from Oregon, to SLC, then a couple cities in Oklahoma, then to Colorado, and as of yesterday, back in SLC. I’m hoping to get the package sometime before I die. It’s cloudy and overcast, not a stitch of breeze, calm as a crypt, and just a bit ominous feeling. My sinuses are in an uproar. My mood is most definitely “meh.” 😏

No, although I am tempted to order a couple of samples because I really want to try Epona from Papillon Perfumes, which was just released here in the US on the first and a couple of others. The package is a bunch of beads for some projects I have mapped out in the future. Nothing I have to have RIGHT NOW, but watching it circle almost the entire western US has been interesting. I got my little (very little) bottle of La Chasse aux Papillions bath gel – I didn’t notice it was an 8 bottle – expensive if it was twice the size. But, it is amazingly smoothing and moisturizing on my skin, and hours later, I still smell really good, so whatever they did to extend the lasting time on skin, makes it well worth it for now. I will see how my bank account and I feel after it is gone. We have high humidity rain with thunder claps here, and, after a forecaster lull, more hours of the same rolling in this after noon. Working on getting my filing up todate – and when I get tired of that, I think a nice nap is in my future! Hope Monday is treating everyone well!
