Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ open thread, late July 2024

Posted by Robin on 20 July 2024 173 Comments

It's the third weekend in July, and we're marking the occasion with our usual open thread poll.

Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance you're thinking maybe you'll buy after all, the weather, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

    Hello and happy weekend!
Sotd is LV Fleur du Désert. Trying this out for the second time. It smells nice but very reminiscent of something. Then it came to me, Nivea cream. Not exactly the same but it’s family.
I think I am very close to getting Comete. It is just so pretty and I love macarons, which this perfume reminds me of.
The weather is just intolerable! Heavy rain and super hot 35C for days and the foreseeable future. It’s only July. I am shaking just realizing the same, hot August and September are ahead.

Wearing no 5 Eau Premiere today since no 5 seems to be my go to for a work perfume. I am trying to figure out things to do for tomorrow. West Side Market, the Aquarium, or Botanical garden are options.

I’m in Paris-Deauville for a hair appointment this morning, second one with the substitute practitioner while my regular person is out on maternity leave. The sub did well last time, but I’ve found that the second time is the real test. We shall see!

It did! It’s funny, but I often have hair people who cut brilliantly but can’t seem to dry my hair the way I want — but that’s better than the other way around. I can always come home and re-dry it my way. 😁

Tell us about your Korean beauty purchases! I bought five skincare products, no makeup, but I’m interested. I got a face mask, cleaning product for face, toner, serum, and face cream. The serum is a bit tingly. I’m also going to look for their sunscreen. I absolutely hate every kind of sunscreen I’ve tried, and I’ve tried many, but no Korean ones. None of them let my face breathe! I know it’s an essential product to use but I can’t stand wearing them!

For sunscreen, try the Beauty of Joseon one…it’s thin, moisturizing, doesn’t leave a white cast and is SPF 50 PA++++. I wore it the other day for the first time and it was lovely! I usually stay away from chemical sunscreens because they break me out. Mineral sunscreens are so thick and pasty, though. Anyway, this is a combo sunscreen and it’s very light feeling and there is zero white cast. I’ll be repurchasing for sure, and it’s so affordable! It’s also 20% off now.

Take an enabler pin or two for yourself, Deva! I went on the YesStyle site and bought not only that but another few face products and some lipstick stains that are supposed to be good. I really can’t wait to try their type of sunscreen.

I bought a couple of lip stains, too! And a little bento stack of makeup for my upcoming travel. I really like the lip stains I bought because they’re not drying, and the stain lasts a fairly long time. I also bought a couple of tinted sunscreens in the hopes they can do double duty on vacation. I hope you like all the goodies you got! It’s fun to shop there because the prices are great and free shipping. I’ve never purchased anything there before I placed this order and I’m very happy with the shipping time and the way everything was boxed. Hope you’re equally satisfied with your stuff. 😌

I ordered some Peripera Ink Mood Glowy Lip tints. They are pretty famous and I’m sure I’ve seen women apply them in some of my k-dramas. I almost bought some eyeshadow palettes too but then I held off, thinking to myself, “I’m not sure I really will look as beautiful as the k-drama actresses do with their luminous dark eyes and their pretty eyeshadow shades of pink and peach. I might look more sickly or scary with pink eyelids.”

Ha! GMTA! I bought two of those and then a matte, blurring style lip ink. I did find the color choices a bit off from the photos though. I bought one that is a warm peach in person but looked pink on the site, but the product itself is very comfortable. The berry one I got is already a daily favorite. As for the CosRx I like the snail mucin 96, the 6 peptide skin booster, and the snail 92 all in one cream. I’ve used these and some others at different times and like them all. Fabulous for dry, dehydrated skin, resulting in glowing, plump looking skin.

Korean sunscreens boast about being watery (and yet high SPF) so if you have the sticky feeling this is a good product to try.

I think the differences are supposed to be that Koreans emphasize a lifetime of a sort of ritualistic approach to skin care (10 steps, supposedly), using careful steps of cleaning and hydration, with gentle products that are often traditional and/or organic (like seaweed, rice water, ginseng, and snail secretions (!). Overall it is supposed to be more careful to preserve good skin rather than doing anything to strip skin or apply chemicals like Retinol, etc. Plus they have an incredible array of face masks for every possible sort of reason.

I will chime in even though nobody asked me! Much of my Korean skincare, including my sunscreen, is from Cosrx…I really like their snail serums & Cica collection. I also have a few items from Benton (especially love their Aloe gel), and from the Japanese brand Hada Labo.

I think the only “local” skincare I buy regularly now is The Ordinary Niacinamide serum.

I think it has partly to do with “Hallyu”–the Korean Wave, as they call it, of k-pop and k-dramas. If you watch the k-dramas, as I do, you can’t help but notice what gorgeous skin all the actors and actresses have!

Just wearing body wash today. I’m at that point with summer heat where I don’t want a perfume. I got three new to me scents from Korres on sale for the fourth and used the Peach Blossom today. It’s fruity while still being adult rather than BBW, if that makes sense. My favorite is Apthocary Rose, but their Cashmere Rose must be a better seller since it comes in a body oil and liter size.

Trying out Theodoros Kalotinis Creme Brûlée today and notes are below. It’s quite nice. For some reason I am usually not a fan of coconut in perfume…I like to eat it but not that interested to sniff it.

Taking Mini She-ra and her friend out to lunch and shopping later today and am going to try to sniff anything new at Sephora and Macy’s. Going to try and find a tester of LVEB l’extrait based on some recs here.

Wearing a sample of De Los Santos from Byredo. Was supposed to be flying out to meet family on the southeast coast early this morning but flight got delayed from the Crowdstrike debacle and the rebooking was going to be 2 days later. I was up at 2 AM rebooking on a different airline for tomorrow. Truthfully, isn’t so bad to be relaxing at home today, better than being at the airport.

I am trying to hold off on purchases until 2025 but I might cave for Ella K Musk K or one of my Day Three samples, maybe Escándalo.

            I like Mimosa & Cardamon

I have a sample of orange bitters that is interesting.

Black Berry and Bay is really good.

I will try Red Roses and the biscuit one if I find it

Yesterday I was in CSP Vanille Banane during the day. At bedtime I put on SL Datura Noir; I remember someone reviewed this and mentioned it’s really good when it’s hot out.

Were off to the beach; I’ll be hiding under the umbrella but at least we can go in the water. Going to be 40 celcius today. Made some garlicky hummus for our lunch. SOTD will be copius amounts of sunscreen.

I’m feeling much better today! Thank you to everyone who sent kind well wishes. They worked! Also, I pretty much slept for two-three solid days.

Don’t think I really lost my sense of taste or smell but I was just so stuffed up I couldn’t manage any appetite nor could I smell much at all. To celebrate today I put on some lavish sprays of SL L’Orpheline. For some reason even though it is incense and musk I think of it as a “cool” scent–cool and grey. It’s a bit like being in an underground crypt, but not a creepy one, rather an old, cool, comfortable place.

Hot weekend here. SMN Acqua di Colonia yesterday and TDC Sel de Vetiver today.

I got my irrigation system set up for my back patio this weekend, so that’s good. But I realized that the leak I’ve seen every time I’ve installed the timer for vacation in the last few years isn’t from the connections on the timer, but from the handle. I can’t really leave the water on for four months and have it leaking the whole time…will see how long it takes for the strata to get a plumber here.

Got Kathleen Hanna’s autobiographt from the library a few days ago and have already finished it. Definitely takes me back to a time and a place in my life, for good and for bad, just as it is for her. So…a good book.

I’m wearing Frapin 1270. It does remarkably well in the heat.

I am following the discussion on Korean skin care but I have been using ROC, Paula’s Choice, and the Ordinary for so long I don’t know if I can change. Bought the sunscreen yesterday so we’ll see!

I have become mildly obsessed with gel nail products. I put the semi-cured sticker kind on my toes a month ago and they are still going strong, so I bought five more sets. Those should see me through until Christmas. I also tried some on my fingernails because I am bad at painting my own nails and I like them, too. I can have fancy patterns and not have to try to do them myself!

Paula’s choice has excellent products. I’ve been a fan and a user since I was in my 20’s. If you’re happy with your products and results, no reason to change. PC has an excellent SPF 50 with skincare ingredients here:

      https://www.paulaschoice.com/resist-skin-restoring-moisturizer-with-spf-50/797.html

It was my HG for years, but I ran out months ago and started looking for a tinted SPF so I can get a 2 for 1 product and I haven’t really found anything other than CeraVe tinted SPF 30, but I like a higher SPF. Anyway, all this to say that two days after trying the beauty of Josean sunscreen, I developed a breakout. Not sure if this is the culprit as I bought a bunch of SPF’s and tested them all over my face the day they arrived.

For those interested, I would look for reputable derm MD’s who review Korean skincare. Many are reticent because of lack of peer reviewed studies, but some do recommend and confirm efficacy of non-USA developed skincare. Most will tell you the mechanism of action and why it works well (ingredients, manufacturing process, etc…)

I seem to remember that European sun screens (and a lot of Asian ones for that matter) are better than American ones because some really good sun filters are not allowed in the US.
There are some interesting posts on skin care on Bois de Jasmin. They might be useful. I don’t read there very often these days, but she had some interesting thoughts on skin care and sun screen.

My own skin care “regime” consists of Paula’s Choice, The Ordinary (or Deciem perhaps, as I use some Niod and Hylamide products as well) and several French pharmacy brands. I’m often tempted to try new things but, I’m mostly really pleased with my regular products that seem to work quite well.

From what I understand there has been no advances/changes in sun protection here in the US since the 90’s…I really like the Ordinary’s Squalane facial oil and Glycolic acid. One of my great anticipations when I get to France in October is having some free time to just mosey around and look at all the French pharmacy offerings…💸💸💸

I’ve been following the Korean skincare discussion with some interest. However, my routine is minimal, and I seem to have found products that work exactly as intended on me, except for something to get rid of a few pesky dark spots. So I am sticking with my surefire items.

Had some super scary weather here over the weekend. An extremely severe thunderstorm rolled thru the Front Range on Saturday evening. I haven’t seen rain and wind like that since Superstorm Sandy hit New Jersey. A nasty addition to the near-hurricane conditions was about 30 minutes of hail. The I-25 interchange near me was under 6 inches of water at one point. And Teflon kitty was hiding behind the couch while all this was going on. 🙀

Fortunately, I didn’t have any property damage. Do. Not. Want!

SOTD = L’Eau de Chloe EdT. It’s the perfect summer rose perfume for me. Lemon, pink roses, and a lightweight, clean patchouli base. So pretty! 🌹😻
