Friday scent of the day 7/12

Posted by Robin on 12 July 2024 176 Comments

Happy Friday and happy Simplicity Day (aka Henry David Thoreau’s birthday). RIP Shelley Duvall. Our community project for today is Cologne part 2: wear a modern citrus-based cologne. (If it helps start you off, see 5 perfumes: (great) new wave summer colognes.)

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I went with Guerlain Cologne du 68.

Reminder: 7/19 will be Mint Friday...wear a fragrance with a mint note. Extra points if mint is in the name!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Morning!

Robin, I wish I bought your SOTD when it was still available-think it’s discontinued. I’m in Ninfio Mio, in the pretty green frosted glass bottle. I really love some of the special edition bottles Goutal put out-I must be part crow because I love pretty glass 🙂

Hope everyone is doing ok in the heat. We got a drop in temperatures last night then torrential rain. Back to hotter temps for the next week.

    Hello and tgif!
Sotd is MFK Aqua Vitae Cologne Forte, my favourite of the 4 cologne fortes. I originally thought I had no CP scent but I remembered I bought a holiday set of minis that had these colognes. Happy me! Also, thanks to this weeks CP I realised what category of scent I am most “lacking” in my collection and needs “resolving”, ha.

Catrhusia Mediterraneo. Not really modern, but close enough to the idea of the CP.

Weather forecast scares me, especially for Saturday, Sunday and Monday. And even after that it is only marginally better. We are experiencing record-breaking temperatures for this area.

Robin, you chose CPs well – cologne, cologne, mint. 🍋🍋🌿

I had planned to be twins with Glannys in Mediterraneo today, but the hand went to the small decant of Jour d’Hermes Absolu instead. No regrets! This will probably be the next FB to join my little collection … unless the new Fazzolari gets in the way. His soaps are very nice, btw.

    Ninfeo Mio
Ninfeo Mio is greens baked in the sun. Very tranquil, suppose to smell like the Gardens of Ninfa in Italy. I have never been-but this fragrance transports me there…

I feel super chic anytime I wear Goutal. My favorite being Songes

Is 1977 modern? I’m in the original Eau de Courrèges, a brilliant citrus cologne laced with greenery and wisps of sandalwood and oakmoss in the base. It’s spectactular, one of my happiest, most serendipitous blind buys.

I’m battling a lousy summer cold, and I needed a pick-me-up, so I’m wearing Artisan Pure from John Varvatos. (Every now and then, they come up with a winner.) It’s a straightforward, classic citrus/herbal cologne – thankfully, there’s nothing “aquatic” about it, and it doesn’t push the woodsy notes too far.

    Happy Friday, all!

Back in Eau d’Hadrien, def the proper time of year for this one.
Has anyone tried the Soak laundry products for handwashing? Wirecutter rates it highly, but am skeptical of the no-rinse aspect.
It’s on Amazon, but the Soak site had a sampler set for something like $60 that’s currently sold out. Intrigued by the yuzu and wild mint scents–not typical choices.

I have used Soak. I prefer Eucalan, and I know at least one indie yarn dyer who says NOT to use Soak on her yarns because of concerns about it taking out color. I have never had that happen with either product. OTOH there are other Big Names in the yarn world who prefer Soak.

Eucalan, no surprise, contains lanolin, so that would be an issue for people who are allergic.

The no-rinse has never been a problem. The scent of the washing product does linger f

…for a while, but I do not find it overpowering. My favorite is Eucalan jasmine (sometimes sold as “Wrapture”), but I also like the lavender version. For Soak, I have only tried “Lacey,” and don’t love it. YMMV.

I use these products for almost all of my handwashing; synthetic fibers (bras, stockings, tights) and above all, wool. I also use it for my handspun or hand knit garments.

Soak sells single-use packets and I have used those while traveling to wash laundry in the hotel sink. The scents are strong (so much so that I wouldn’t use it as my everyday laudry detergent) but my (annoyingly) sensative skin has had no ill effects from the no-rinse aspect.

Twinning, tripling, quadrupling with many here in house (AG) and scent (Ninfeo Mio) today. Wore SL Une Bois Vanille yesterday.

A host here said her thermometer read 102F yesterday. And that was in the shade. Cannot wait for summer to be done done done!

Stay cool, and please remember pets cannot tolerate this heat either. I have to force my dog to come in because she would sit in the sun all day on prairie dog watch if she could. Take care of your four legged kids!

Oh, yuck! I heard rabies is making a resurgence, too. She’s always on lead here, but she is quick! I walk her to and from the office on work days as she is the official “greeter.” She can catch a mouse in less than second as it scurries along the outside walls of the building. I never even see them. The prairies dog and mice are so numerous here it’s awful. The mice are the worst because they’re always trying to get in buildings to nest. The guy next to me has a big class A motor home and has had mice in his rig multiple times this season. 🐁 I don’t have anything against mice per sé, and in fact think they’re cute as all get out, but I don’t want mice tippity-tapping across my dishes, getting into foodstuffs and leaving little brown gifts everywhere. 😖 Will research the plague issue. This is gross so don’t read further if you’re sensitive, but I read a few years ago a biologist found a dead something or other, large like a bear iirc, and decided to do a necropsy in the field and as soon as he punctured with his scalpel, all the gasses and droplets from the abdominal cavity blew into his face. He later died of plague. 😳

Plague is endemic in Prairie Dog colonies. Don’t let your dogs go hunting there. If they do wander through one, wash them well and use heavy duty flea powder- the fleas are the disease vector. Doctors are often unfamiliar with the early symptoms, and a few, like 2 or four people die of the plague in Wyoming, and other states where prairie dog colonies thrive, every year, just because it doesn’t get identified in time. Not an easy way to die.

Well, white tailed prairie dogs are all over here. No way to avoid them. Hopefully, we won’t die! I do use Simparica Trio monthly for the dog but I’m not positive this “prevents” flea bites or if it actually poisons them after the bite. I’ll have to research that. I don’t let my dog hunt anywhere and have taught her NOT to chase wildlife when off leash (fairly successful with that) but if I’m walking her on the leash and she dives for a mouse that I am unaware of, not too much I can do about that. She’s fast! I have always been more concerned about her diving after snakes, honestly. Thanks for the info!

I think it probably takes multiple exposures, to fleas, or eating an animal that has died of the plague to get a large enough dose to actually get sick, like the icky story of the guy who got drenched, you know? Hot running water and lots of soap on your body, your pets, your clothes and your vehicles all contribute to low infection rates…leave your hiking boots outside, too!

Bubonic plague is a fact of life here in Colorado. It’s in the prairie dog colonies here, too. AFAIK it’s endemic in the entire Four Corners region. Fortunately human exposure is rare.

A bit exhausted from Hurricane Beryl, but I did evacuate to Dallas. I had to come back Wednesday for class on Thursday. I honestly wouldn’t have but I couldn’t drop the class. Surely the professor could have been a bit more accommodating. She said more than half the class dropped, after all….

Trying Zara Angelic Vanilla today which I bought in store a couple months ago but never broke into. Notes are below. Getting cherry/almond in the opening…assume it’s the almond blossom note but finding it a bit cloying so far…like cherry flavored liquid meds for kids type smell. eheheh 🍒💉

    Top notes: bergamot, almond blossom.
    Middle notes: rose, rice, myrrh.
Base notes: tonka bean, liquid musk, vanilla beans, velvety wood.

Also interested in Romance d’Iris. Is it possible to have too many iris scents? I’m also wondering about the rice note in there; to me it sounds like it should be a good one!

I’m in FM Bigarade Concentree, the favorite cologne that I’ve tried this summer.
TGIF! The past couple of days were too busy at work to comment. Yesterday I wore Aqua Universalis from a sample. I’ve been wanting to try it for awhile. Seems like something that would be right up my alley but there was something in it that bothered me. Almost a bitter or rancid note. Not bad enough to scrub, but definitely a no for me.
This weekend is supposed to be hot and humid. Again.🥵

Not awful weather today. Worn out from phone calls with medical system, machinery repair places of various sorts (lawn mower, travel trailer). Why is it so complicated to pay a bill, or make an appointment to get something fixed?
I put on something that smells pretty this morning, but I don’t even know what it is. Pretty sure a good nap will help!

I’m in a motel in a small rural town in the foothills of the Southern Alps, a very pretty spot but chilly. Luckily the bed has an electric blanket as it got cold at dark. I love the dark nights that go with these places, a real void of black sky. Driving down I saw some newborn lambs tottering to their feet next to the ewe. I reckon they were less than a day old as they had that slightly bedraggled look. Sheep are left in the paddocks over winter ( same with cows) but are often brought down from the hills, to miss the worst of the snow. Anyway, the final drive home today, across the plains and down the coast. Wearing Twilly Tutti Frutti which is light but not a cologne. Lots of mimosa in flower now, splashes of yellow amongst popping up randomly in the shelter belts.

While technically not a citrus cologne, my choice for today’s cp couldn’t be more citrus – main notes are lime, lemon and bergamot – and with its touch of mint for added freshness, YR My Green Summer edt (2019) layered over BBW’s White Citrus products is extremely refreshing on a hot 🌞 day. Despite the ‘Green’ in its name, the only green in the scent is from the lime and mint, I smell nothing grassy. Really like this one.👍

Since we skipped our June mini-trip, we’re taking a long staycation weekend. Started last night, a beautiful one weatherwise, with an outdoor concert 🎶 featuring a great local band, Billy Elton. (Yep, playing the best of Billy Joel & Elton John). Dinner tonight with friends, then going to see another of our favorite musicians, Jim Green, who plays a unique style of finger-picking, percussive guitar. Tomorrow we’re taking almost-17 grandson to a Sox game – haven’t spent a day with just him since he was 8 or 9, can’t wait!❤️. Ending the weekend with a Sustainability Garden Walk on Sunday. Hope the weekend thunderstorms stay away!🤞

Wishing everyone a great weekend ahead. ✌️ and 💗 to all.

I have had a crazy hectic work today and needed something to help me cope and I was working from home so I sprayed myself generously with Providence Perfume Company Tangerine Thyme. It’s such a gorgeous incense based citrus fest and it helps me calm down and relax.
I wish a had a sample of Abel’s Laundry Day to try today, it promises to be a very interesting new citrus scent. I meant to order it but never got around to it. Wonder if anyone has tried it..?

My new wave summer cologne is Le Dieu Cerf by Ralf Schwieger for Etienne de Swardt (ELdO). He created the fragrance for St. Eustache, a church in Paris where he is a parishioner. I purchased it at the church last summer when we were in Paris.
