Wednesday scent of the day 7/3

Posted by Robin on 3 July 2024 121 Comments

It's Hump Day, plus International Plastic Bag Free Day. Author birthdays today: Franz Kafka, MFK Fisher, Tom Stoppard, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Rohinton Mistry, Dave Barry. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in vintage Dior Eau Sauvage.

Reminder: on 7/5, we're doing Cologne part 1: wear a classic citrus-based cologne. (If it helps start you off, see 5 perfumes: (great) old school summer colognes. Next week we'll be doing modern citrus-based cologne.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello.
Sotd is Lush Goddess. Smells really good and not too heavy in the heat. Doesn’t last long though and I did a good 8 spritz!
Foodies alert! I just saw this in one of those news feeds on my phone: Heinz just released a limited edition sauce in the UK called Every Sauce, because it contains 14! sauces in one. Everything indeed. https://everysauce.heinz.co.uk/

I don’t have an old school cologne so I’m wearing whatever this week. Today is an at home day so of course I’m wearing a cloud of perfume, this time it’s Chaldee.

ringthing, I have Chaldee too, and it’s perfect in the summer. I don’t associate it with any sunscreen I’ve ever smelt. You smell great!

Thanks carole! I love opoponax and it’s almost always in a cold weather heavy-hitter perfume, so it’s lovely to find it in a lighter form.

Is 2001 old-school yet? If so, I get cp points for Mugler cologne.

Mugler Cologne is on my “modern cologne” list for the next week. Not because of the year but because of its style. An excellent cologne anyway.

Yay! A cool cloudy day! Thank you everyone for sympathy yesterday.

I am wearing Penhaligon’s Castile. Maybe it is not quite a classic cologne in the strictest sense, but it is definitely modelled after a classic neroli cologne. Soapy orange blossom for that “just out of shower” feel. And there’s a funny review of Castile on NST, written by Kevin.

Today I stumbled across this post on reddit (r/fragrance) – https://www.reddit.com/r/fragrance/comments/1drw8e5/is_it_rude_to_only_buy_samples_and_not_full_size/

Basically, a perfume store owner wrote (and then apparently posted on Instagram) an email to a customer telling them they should not buy samples only and need to buy full bottles. What do you think?

I, for one, do not intend to buy full bottles of perfume in the near future (maybe ever), but I still want to try something new now and then. If the store does not want to sell samples only, they can easily change their store policy or simply raise prices of samples. Emailing a customer trying to shame them for not buying full bottles seems such a bad move to me.

Glannys, you smell great. And I’ve purchased full bottles when I cannot get a sample. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Now I’m absolutely in favour of sampling first. If it’s a problem to make the samples then either increase the cost, to cover the time and inconvenience, or stop selling samples, and see if it affects retail sales.

I found a decant of Eau de Cologne du Coq (1894), so I am CP compliant. Also, I am really enjoying the scent, although I should have sprayed more, or brought the decant with me.

Still wafting Cologne pour le Soir from last night. While it may have “cologne” in the name there’s no resemblance to any kind of citrus cologne ever concocted. Deep, warm honey, amber, and some incense thrown in makes a refined animalic scent. I have a keg sized bottle and have no idea why. I could live three lifetimes and still have 3/4 bottle left over. Still wish I had gotten APLA instead. Also, Liz Moores is sharing her perfume collection over on IG stories. Love seeing what perfumers like for themselves vs what they design for others. I’m leaning towards Corsica Furiosa for today’s perfume.

T-Rex the Terminator pounced on a mouse yesterday as we were headed into work. One minute she’s walking sedately by my side and the next she’s airborne, diving nose first into some grass and then popping up with a squeaking, wriggling mouse. It’s a bit disconcerting. 🫤

MFK Fisher, my favorite author! I’ll have to re- (re-re-re-re-) read some of The Gastronomical Me today in her honor.

Thanks to Boyfriend, I have AC!!! He helped me wrangle a window unit into my non-window-unit-compatible window and engineer an insert to make it all work, and now we can laugh at the weather. Another 110-degree day today, but Biscuit and I are off to the pool for swim lessons (him) and lap swimming (me). Smells-wise, I’m in Vacation sunscreen, which feels like the perfect scent for a hot hot summer day with pool time involved.

I am in one of my favourite colognes, Annick Goutal Eau d’Hadrien. I have several old bottles and planning to finish at least one this summer. This should be easy since colognes are fleeting most of the time and I will spray generously and repeat during the day.

I’m wearing the Lilli Bermuda Frangipani fragrance today, and it’s really blossoming beautifully in the heat off my skin.

I was feeling so wobbly before having an uncomfortable conversation, but now that it’s finished, I feel a huge sense of relief. I hate confrontation but realize I have no one to blame but myself in the end if I can’t confront the problem head on.

Reading books is so much easier than talking…lol

I should be joining Robin in vintage Eau Sauvage, but I left my newly- gifted decant at home, and I’m not there. Drat!

However, I did come across a bottle of Florida Qater that I had forgotten about, so I’m sporting that today. I can hardly believe that this one has been around since 1808!
The cinnamon note in it always struck me as a bit odd in an Eau de Cologne, and I’ll see if it wears a little better on me today. If not, back on the giveaway shelf it goes!

I love this fragrance because it reminds me of the smell of orange flowers here in my neighbourhood in the summer. The difference with other scents I have tried is the orange skin smell together with the honeyed resin.

It’s about 2.5 degrees so I’m mulling over the cologne CP. I quite like cologne on cold, clear frosty days ( the chill combined with the brightness of the winter sun adds to the zing of cologne)but not so much in cold, gloomy days. It’s still pitch black anyway so may just go for a warmer citrus like Gabrielle. The witch hazel is in flower now in the graveyard, which adds a bit of colour, though the rosehips and holly berries are still looking beautiful.

OK if it is 2.5 degrees I feel like you should reverse the CP entirely and wear your heaviest spicy amber! Then wait and do this project in January.

I tried the original and new versions of IA Whiff of Waffle Cone side by side last night* and they hadn’t completely faded this morning, so I popped some Nanadebary Bronze over that. Post shower I plan to acquire CP points with Eau Sauvage — not vintage, sadly, but still lovely.

    * They are very different versions initially — lots more burnt sugar in the new version — but by this morning it was hard to discern a difference.

I do, but then I do like the aroma of burnt sugar. Probably most people would find the original formula to be closer to the smell of actual, unburnt waffle cones. 😁

A pretty jasmine perfume is a wonderful summertime pick.

BTW, the far drydown of Parfait d’Orchidee is pretty nice. Something woodsy and faintly smoky/incense-y joins the boozy vanilla. Still not something to wear in hot weather, though!

I’m wearing vintage Tatiana today, a gift from a perfumista at one of the Portland Sniffathons, maybe 2017? At Shelly Waddington’s house. I love this scent so much, I wore it exclusively in my early 20’s.

I had a look through my cabinet and I have no colognes, old or modern, at all. Like Deva I have Cologne pour le Soir but it’s not a really a cologne. The closest I have is Mediterraneo or Fresh Hesperides, but what I’m wishing I had was Jean Nate. I used to splash that on by the handful in hot weather.

I dithered for years over Sud, but in the end never bought it because I had a big decant. Now that’s gone off so I have none!

I have hardly any old school colognes, even in my vast sample stash. So instead I’m wearing a tiny spritz of Shalimar Cologne, it’s working well in the 100 degree heat. We’ve been blasting the AC (I feel so fortunate to have AC), will worry about the energy bill later!

I’m with you on the AC. My June electric bill was pretty high and I try to keep it at 75. It’s definitely up from last year.

I got sticker shock from my latest utility bill. Been keeping my thermostat at 76 during the day.

I have nothing, Zip, for this week, so am just going vaguely in the neighborhood. My SOTD is Jour d’Hermès, which is nicely citrusy. It has very very little staying power, alas.

Our weather continues to be just brutal, but now it sounds like parts of the country in the West are going to be hit really hard soon. I feel for all of you and send prayer messages to Heaven not to let any bad fires start.

I had a hectic time before work tonight. Everywhere I went has been crazy busy. It is still busy here at the store. I was hoping more people would have left town for the holiday.
I’m wearing TF Orchid Soliel. I have it layered with bbw Coco Paradise.

I bet that the grocery stores, liquor stores, and Costco/Wal-Mart have been crazy busy here, too.

I decided that I can get things on Friday. I stayed away from everything!

I was in Chanel Paris-Venise today. With the expected heat cranking up in the next few days, I have a few choices lined up for extra spritzing.

Yesterday marked 6 months since I arrived in back in Colorado after 28 years of living in New Jersey. Time flies!

No old school colognes in either The Sample Stash or my full bottles that I know of. Got a few neo-colognes and modern ones, though. We shall see what I decide on for Friday.

SOTD = commando, but wearing Josie Maran TT body butter in the usual spots. I did a head-to-head (nose-to-nose) test of it and the Bliss Grapefruit and Aloe body butter this morning. They are similar, but the Josie Maran is sweeter and warmer, while the Bliss is fresher. I enjoy both of them.

    I need a lime and a grapefruit emoji! 🍊🍋

Wafting Santal 33 for a very humid day. I get a cologne vibe from it, from the clean woody smell, so maybe I’ll get a CP point or two. I like Santal 33, though it is a bit out of my usual style, and I am surprised it is so popular. I think it’s challenging. Our neighborhood had our annual 4th of July parade, complete with firetruck, and a John Deere tractor for good measure! It was well attended with *lots* of kids on decorated bikes and several parents pulling wagons with little toddlers. I met one new neighbor and talked to several I don’t see often. A nice afternoon that ended with ice cream for all.

I remember being a kid at parades like that. I loved decorating my bike with the red white and blue streamers.

Those kind of parades are what I associate with small towns. It’s always fun hearing about them.
