Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ open thread, late June 2024

Posted by Robin on 29 June 2024 215 Comments

June is drawing to a close...don't forget to rabbit on Monday! (And don't forget Donatella will drop by on Wednesday.) We're easing into July with our usual open thread poll.

Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance you're thinking of buying for your next vacation, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Thank you all for your kind words about finding another caretaker for my mom.
It’s hot and sticky today, so I dug out Mugler Aura. It blooms beautifully in this kind of weather.
Hope everyone has a pleasant weekend.

ringthing, I really feel for you. I lived through something similar. Here’s hoping there’s a great candidate coming your way. They do exist:)

Love the Mugler scents. I have a customer who wears Angel and it’s gorgeous on her. Love it when she comes in. I asked her what the fragrance was, and she told me, and then she told me where to buy it and when, to get the best deals. Perfume people are the best, aren’t they?!

Some wonderful NSTers have shared Mugler scents and I’m a true fan! Angel is beautiful on the right person.

Currently in Kyoto today and waiting for some thunderstorms to come. I might be at work during that time but we need the rain. Bills are pesky to me because if my job didn’t remind me that I am an adult, bills definitely remind me that I am an adult.

    Hello all!

Slept in later than intended; saw a live podcast last night that a friend really enjoys. We had a lot of fun and got ice cream after. I naturally got the Pho flavor which was good but a little TOO rich. It would have gone well with a sorbet.

Studying all weekend, unfortunately. Ready for my next class!

    Have a great weekend all.

Watching the Euro Cup—it’s not looking good for Italy. But I’m hoping they turn things around. ⚽️
The front cover of the Exchange in the WSJ talks about ‘romantasy,” book genre and I feel like NYPL is missing out on hosting an author from this genre.

I’m wearing Shalimar Tonka version and trying to convince myself to save for the next flanker that comes out this fall.
    Anyone else anticipating?

I’m interested in that genre, mainly because I think there is a whole sub-genre of k-dramas like that. I’m watching one now called “Tale of the Nine-Tailed Fox,” and it’s a romance based on a classic Korean fairy tale character of the same name. It combines the romance with a kind of fantasy tale in which these various divine beings continue to inhabit the world and interact with some contemporary people, many of whom are reincarnated versions of a previous person, and so it switches from time to time from the present to periods of the past from the Joseph dynasty, with all the people wearing the historical costumes, often in beautiful settings of castles and mountain forests. It’s fun.

You might like the novel The Fox Wife by Yangtze Choo which centres in a huxian, a shape-shifting fox spirit ( fox/ woman). It’s set in a Manchuria but I think it has similarities with Korean myths and fairy tales. The novel is an easy read, part revenge quest and part mystery, alternating viewpoints between the fox woman and a detective. I’m enjoying it, a good winter read.

After a fairly horrible week with varying amounts of unpleasant heat, humidity, and rain, we finally have a beautiful day, sun and fluffy clouds with a breeze that ruffles the leaves on the trees outside, one of the most beautiful sounds there is.

I’m capping off my week of things I bought in England with Caron Coup de Fouet, the only thing I ever bought myself at Harrods, during our first trip to the country in 2007. One of the great carnation scents, as far as I’m concerned: realistically spiky, not too vicious, but with a lot of presence.

You smell amazing. I still have some CdeF left, and I still love it. I even have some drops of Poivre left-sometimes I layer them, in colder weather. It’s nice when you buy a perfume during a vacation-I find if I do, once I wear it again I remember the vacation.

    Hey, Folks! Happy Saturday.
I’m wearing Lanvin Arpège Pour Homme. A shame this was discontinued – it reminds me of the original version of Dior Homme.

In Monday, I’m heading to a rented lake house about an hour from Montreal for a weeklong family reunion. Of course, packing is no longer just about clothing; I must also consider travel perfume. What will I WEAR??😊
    Enjoy the weekend, everyone.

Right? I’m a lousy packer. Always bring too much, yet I fear I’ll forget something important. In fact, as I age I find pretty much everything about travel to be enormously stressful. Don’t get me wrong – I love being in new places around the world; it’s the getting there that’s tough.😳

    SOTD = Papillon Bengale Rouge

… idea courtesy of Deva. It is a very nice perfume and I am almost running out 😱. No hoarding though. And for full disclosure, I still have a low-buy but I have exceptions. I am awaiting a delivery of three 30 mL bottles from Jorum Studio. I don’t remember the names )and too lazy to look them up) but they are re-workings and then some from previous perfumes.

I live in a townhouse and every 5 years or so, the township deploys people to check on compliance with fire safety regulations. I hope it was as easy as the previous one but we’ll see. Ours will be on July 8th so I definitely have a ton to accomplish!

Years ago there was an NST Lemming of the day in the form of a cat incense burner, as shown right in the middle of the Astier de Villatte page:

    https://www.astierdevillatte.com/fr/28-porte-encens

I never expected to acquire it, but today I found it in a local store – they threw in some of the incense. It is delightfully sinister and I look forward seeing it puff away and plan world domination.

Wearing 7 Virtues Vetiver of Haiti today thanks to a lovely NSTer. The spritzer needs to be looked at because when I depressed it, the perfume shot out like water out of a fire hose. On my way to work so will have to evaluate it later.

The Baby T-Rex isn’t feeling well today. She tried to bury her half of a banana (in the BED!) instead of eating it. I think the pain meds (which are NSAID’s) are upsetting her stomach, so I may hold off giving her any more today to see how she does. I do give them with food but still…

Also STILL vacuuming up the occasional love bug in the camper. They fly in when I open the door and I’m sick to death of them! 🤬

Love bugs aside, I hope everyone has a great weekend!

It’s been chilly so I’ve been reading books in bed ( The Fox Woman, a Chinese shape shifting / mystery; and Chris Stein ( of Blondie) autobiography, both enjoyable. Yesterday, though, I noticed a nice sweet pollen scent in the air, a bit like mimosa, from a small kowhai tree. It’s one of those strange flowers that if you sniff up close you don’t get much of a scent impression but every now and again the air surrounding the tree wafts fragrance. I wonder if it’s because the flowers are very deep, so the pollen has to be released into the air. Anyway, wearing Mimosa Cardamon which is very close.

What a cheerful tree to bloom in winter! The closest we get to something that nice in winter is witchhazel, although it’s very late winter / early spring, and it isn’t that showy.

I’m wearing several sprays of Lush Big. I still had the past weeks CP bottles grouped on my dresser so it was handy.

Felt very bad yesterday and today. We had a pair of robins trying to build a nest in the grapevine that’s beside and growing on the deck/patio covering. Had to dismantle the nest 3 times; then I had to prune much of the grapevine back to discourage them from rebuilding. As much as I love birds and wildlife, I can’t have them nesting exactly where we sit and enjoy outside. They’d be divebombing us while fiercely protecting their babies! I’m sure the previous owner allowed them to nest here before because they had a perfect protected spot chosen. I hope they found a new place to “build”!

Our summer weather – 26C today – is changing and next week will be around 20C every day.

It’s my birthday today and I classed some correspondence I keep like birthday cards and letters, discarded a few but kept most, anyway nobody seems to do much paper writing these days so the file will remain manageable I think.

It was Caron Eau de réglisse today, I always enjoy and wear it in summer, it’s a citrussy liquorice.

I’m still enjoying the various items from my recent Arquiste floral discovery scent, and today’s scent is Boutonniere No. 7. This is a very beautiful and authentic gardenia that at the same time is delicate and restrained. The lasting power seems good though I don’t believe it has much sillage. That’s fine as I am just staying home alone today watching one of my current k-dramas. Can you believe that I was asked to speak on k-dramas at a panel coming up next month with two other speakers, both Koreans? Wow. It’s a little intimidating but fun. I kind of love being retired where I can still do some projects like this that are maybe not super-serious but still pretty interesting. It’s really going to be fun for me.

Meanwhile my house is staying at about 81 degrees while I run several fans nearby to cope. Because my air conditioners are now 12 years old it seems that they are having their last gasps (upstairs and downstairs) and the handlers are leaking so that I’ve decided I must bite the bullet and replace them. Ugh! It’ll take a little while to arrange the finances (money transfers) and get the job done. The latest technicians who have come have been from a group that all seems to be Russians, some from Kazakhstan, and they are very competent and kind, as well, and hard-working. I found them on the service called Thumbtack where they had great reviews and they have really impressed me. I like it when these guys come in and work hard at a nasty job and then clean everything up and leave your house looking pristine. It’s going to improve my life a lot to get this done even though I’ve been dreading it the past couple of years due to the expense.

      SUNDAY UPDATE!
16:57pm.having Biltong(like a beef jerky of sorts) and potato soup with meatballs.Yummy and satisfying!
Did a quick Johannesburg roadtrip to some perfume shops.
Chanel Comete tested and bought!($$$$$!! for a 75ml).Love the cherry-iris accord, dries down to a lovely skinscent.
Also wanted to explore Tilia but no tester….
I tried the Hermès H24 Herbes vives that has been talked about a lot on youtube, and it definitely smells nice.although not my style of perfume. Also tested Initio Psychedelic Love again, because I’m hunting for a proper Heliotrope fragrance again. All in all a nice day out.Scored some Chanel samples of the cologne range and very eager to try those as well!
Any rec’s for a really great heliotropin fragrance?

Happy belated birthday, dear. Yesterday I finally had the house power washed, and the handyman showed up in Crocs.
They seem to be a popular choice among you medical professionals, too.
My heliotrope recommendation is Oriza’s Heliotrope Blanc. Was disappointed in the current version of Apres l’Ondee. My question is, how noticeable is the helioptrope in Comete?

The only perfume I can think of for a good whiff of heliotrope is Soivohle’s Lilacs and Heliotrope. It’s gorgeous. but IDK if it is still around or not.

After yesterday’s constant and often torrential rain, we are in full summer today — sunshine, upper 70s, and, alas, all of yesterday’s humidity. Today is Mr. Skal’s birthday, and we would like to take our kayaks out on the lake, but it may not happen (sailboat races this morning creating lots of on-water traffic; HOT and very sunny at midday, and we have a non-birthday event this evening).

Will probably wear Penhaligon Violetta today, to connect belatedly with last week’s CP.

Happy Sunday perfume people! It cooled down beautifully overnight and it is currently 56 degrees with low humidity. Love it. We will get up to 72 today. I’ve been waiting for this weather!🌞
I think I’ll go with Dune.
I can’t believe June is over, but I’m super excited for the upcoming holiday. Yesterday my h and I (well, mostly me😂) made the impromptu decision to head out of town since we both have a 4 day weekend. My favorite little Airbnb became available and so I snapped it up. We’ll head to the old alma mater (where madtownteen will be in the fall) for 3 nights. It’s along the Mississippi where they’ll be having a festival with music, food and fireworks. The last time mr madtown and I got away was summer of 2022 because: life. Should be fun.☺️
Speaking of madtownteen, I will be FaceTiming with her later this morning. She had a day off from camp and spent it at my parents house for dinner and overnight. I’m sure it was the highlight of their week.🥰

My partner and I are (and have been) preparing to leave later this week for an 11 day trip to see family and friends in Ohio. That’s been really preoccupying for me, mostly mentally, and also with trying to get things in order at work to be away that long. It’s long overdue though. I haven’t visited since shortly before the pandemic started. And everything is so different now – my mom has a “friend” and I have a niece and new nephew whereas 4+ years ago my mom was single and I only had one 9 year old nephew. And my boyfriend’s parents are a handful, each in their own way. At least they’re divorced, so each is handled on their own. So I’m looking forward to seeing people, but there’s also been trepidation and mental preparation. We’ll spend the first 4 days or so near Cleveland in Chagrin Falls with his family, then three days in Columbus to see friends (that’s also where we lived for 11 years before we moved to the PNW), and the last four or so days in Dayton with my family.

I also have to pick perfumes for this trip! I think it’ll mainly be citrus or beachy kind of scents that I have in spray samples since it’ll probably be very warm and humid most of the time we’re there. I’m also considering my travel spray of Essential Parfums Nice Bergamote, which I recently unearthed from the bottom of a box.

If we have time, I might try to visit Indigo Perfumery, so fingers crossed. Otherwise, the only fun perfume aspect of the trip will be sniffing and wearing some in my mom’s collection, most of which I’ve given to her. She doesn’t wear perfume everyday so I have a feeling she’ll still have most of the ones she did last time I was there.

No perfume yet today, but I can smell remnants of last night’s Papillon Tobacco Rose.

If you can, take a few calming and/or fun fragrances, just to keep yourself on an even keel. Hope you can get out for some shopping!

Thanks, Gail! A nice thing I just remembered is his dad just recently bought a vacation condo on Lake Erie and wants the two of us to go spend a night or two there on our own so that should be lovely.

Rabbit rabbit rabbit…feel like we will be entering the winter rabbit hole now, as the months of July and August are usually the coldest. I was at the op shop yesterday ( charity/ thrift) and to my surprise there were two bottles of perfume: a full Paris EDT for $25 ( which I bought) and a sealed Gucci Homme ($25) which I didn’t buy. When I got home I googled the Gucci and it’s the 1976 version, so now I will probably go back for it, out of curiosity. I’m too lazy to deal with re-selling on EBay as it would involve international shipping . Hmmm, what to do….

Gosh I don’t know the 76 version. I imagine it’s very masculine smelling. It would be neat to have.
      Great find on Paris!

Hi all, and happy end of June! I haven’t been able to stop in much lately, with so much going on. I’m one month into my stint of parenting alone, and…well, no one is dead or injured yet, so I guess that’s a success? It’s no fun, though, when Mr. Ockeghem checks in every day from Rome or Florence or Granada or what have you. (He got to see the start of the Tour de France yesterday, and, unprompted, stopped by Santa Maria Novella to get a bottle of their rosewater for me to use when I finally move over, so I can’t complain.)

SOTD (and yesterday) is SMN Acqua di Colonia, which I bought in Florence in 2007, in honour of Mr. Ockeghem’s trip there.

Fingers crossed, he will move into our apartment in Germany tomorrow. (I always have to temper this, based on a lot of bad experiences with renting in Germany and turning up to collect the keys, even with a signed lease, and finding that they’ve rented to someone else in the meantime. I *think* we’re okay, but we’ll have to see tomorrow.

He’s sweltering in Germany and we’re still in June-uary in the Northwest. I would love to have summer start, but then, I am also careful what I’m wishing for! Meanwhile, if he’s got to be in Italy, I’m spending my time planning our fall break trip there. There are worse things.

Long weekend here — happy Canada Day to those of us here, and happy Fourth of July to those south of the border!

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit. I remembered when I woke briefly at 3 am (right on the dot, how strange is that?) and looked at the clock.
I’m in Annick Goutal Eau de Hadrien for a sample thunk. Just 3 days of work this week.🤩

Happy Canada Day to all the Maple Leaf Peeps! Your country’s beauty is only surpassed by the “niceness” of its people. Hoping to get back there soon. ☺️

I’m off today and planning some deep cleaning but currently procrastinating by surfing the net. I remembered my rabbits only after I open up NST. Better late than never I guess. I’m wearing Shalimar MI today. Very fancy for camper cleaning.😉

    Happy Monday!

Gaynor gave me some samples when we met up last week and I have joined the Diva ( Ungaro) club – what a cheerful scent for bleak winter weather. Yesterday was dismal, and I think today will be just as bleak, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s snow on the hilltops ( once the sun rises and I can see). My husband bought an air fryer last week and has been making chips for breakfast, lunch and dinner in order to perfect them. I think it will only be a matter of time before he buys a second air fryer to compare with the first, and so on. We already have four or five pressure cookers, a couple of slow cookers….endless gadgets strewn around the house, stored in corners etc. as our house is small. So ugly, drives me nuts.

That is funny. I want a pressure cooker and have been waiting for ages for my slow cooker to die so I can buy one. At least he is feeding you!

Mancera Soleil d’Italie. It’s nice, sort of reminds me of a slightly more masculine version of Chanel Chance Eau Fraiche edt.

At first I really liked it and now I wish I had put on Chanel Eau de Cologne….except I finished that sample and don’t have any more of it.

I got a terrible head cold a couple weeks ago and am now able to smell perfume again, but only the lightest and most inoffensive ones. Everything else is still too much. That’s why Chanel Eau de Cologne was perfect – it was bright and faded away quickly lol. I could never buy a full bottle at the price for something that fades so fast.

And now I remember I have 4711 in my fridge, so that’s going to be my SOTD – since Soleil d’Italie is also fading fast and sadly becoming a bit cloying. I am sure in a normal state I would find it perfect.

Wearing Chanel Paris-Riviera today. I spritzed on quite a bit, so it’s still hanging in there. Perfect day for it as it’s 24° C, 75° F. Looking ahead in about a week, it’s supposed to get to 38° C, 100° F. Hoping those temps change! 🌞

🐇🐇🐇! I have a spare set of rabbits available if anyone needs them.

Productive day today! I dunno why I am so fired up, but I’ve been in a “Get ‘Er Done” mood since around 9am or so.

SOTD = still hanging out in Ormond Jayne Champaca today. I also tried out a new body butter, Josie Maran Topless Tangerine. Like it! But HATE the name.

I am very happy with the consistency and hydrating ability of the Josie Maran body butters. (I have 4 different ones, lol.)

The TT is a cross between tangerine and a sweet pink grapefruit scent.
