Friday scent of the day 6/28

Posted by Robin on 28 June 2024 218 Comments

It's Friday, National Paul Bunyan Day, Tau Day and Henry VIII's birthday.  Our community project for today: we're off to England! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in England, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to England, or that features a local ingredient, or ?

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm following SheriG's Thursday pick with Ormonde Jayne Champaca.

Reminder: on 7/5, we're doing Cologne part 1: wear a classic citrus-based cologne. (If it helps start you off, see 5 perfumes: (great) old school summer colognes. Next week we'll be doing modern citrus-based cologne.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

It’s unseasonably cool so I’m enjoying Mitzah today. Yesterday was SL Fils de Joie.

Cool here, too cazaubon. Mitzah is a beautiful choice. Will you have time to camp in the Gaspe this year?

I didn’t think I was going to have anything for the cp, but I went to fragrantica and was scrolling through designers from the UK, and there it was: Beauty Pie! Yes, of course, it was founded in the UK.🤦‍♀️
I’m in Element 79 which is my favorite fragrance that I’ve tried from them. Named after gold which is the 79th element on the periodic table. Notes of amber, sandalwood, orange flowers and peach. It’s from perfumer Karine Vinchon Spehner who I hadn’t heard of but it looks like she’s done several for Amouge.
It’s raining again today but I was up early and at my barre studio for the 6 am class. Later I’ll be off to do some retail therapy.
    Happy Friday!

Penhaligon Ostara, which has always felt very British to me. And it’s a cool day with rain expected later. So, it fits.

Seeing a local production of Stones in His Pockets tonight. We saw it years ago, I think on Broadway. Might have been Off-Bway.

How many times can one yell “Down!” in one day? I think I broke a record yesterday. Cats running at full speed to jump and fling themselves at window or door screens.

Narcissus/daffodil scents should count as British thanks to William Wordsworth:

“I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
      A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.”

The triplets turned two at the end of April. We have another orange boy (a polydactyl!) who has been hanging around outside our house for the past several months. We feed him and are making plans to get him fixed for a TnR situation but I’m still holding out hope that we can bring him inside. Mr. Vee is worried it will upset the apple cart with the triplets. I have been introducing them through the screened door and no hissing yet. We’ll see. No idea how old that one is.

Yes… orange ones are special. Fanny is classic orange. Claire is more subdued but gets into as much mischief. They’re great fun…I just need to trim the nails so they don’t ruin the screens.

My brain is operating on a short leash this week and I haven’t really thought about the CP. My mom’s main caretaker has found another job, she’s been with us since my dad died in 2017 and those are big shoes to fill. I have less than a month.
I found a perfume combination yesterday that I really enjoyed, so I’m wearing it again today. It’s by/rosie jane Missy layered with Sira des Indes to bring out the banana note. Tropical fruity.

Sorry your caretaker is leaving. Finding someone who is competent and trustworthy is hard enough, but I imagine the fact that your mother will need to get used to a new person will be an extra challenge.

I’ve been wearing things I bought in England this week, and today it’s Dior Midnight Poison, which I bought in a Debenham’s in London when it was launched. It’s not as interesting or as complex as the original Poison, but you can’t really go wrong with rose and patchouli.

    SOTD is Heeley Saint Clements

“Oranges and lemons say the bells of St. Clement’s” – traditional British nursery rhyme with a bloodthirsty ending. Perfect for Henry VIII and his executed wives:

“Here comes a candle to light you to bed,
And here comes a chopper to chop off your head!”

And if you want a quick refresher about Henry, here is a fun video about him (Henry VIII – OverSimplified) –

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewLpXw6uN28

    Wasn’t he a charmer? 🤨

You know, I actually associate lily-of-the-valley with Egnland for some reason. Maybe it is the name, maybe it’s because one of my favorite lily-of-the-valley scents is Yardley’s, maybe because in my mind it goes well with English landscape.

As predicted, I chose Penhaligon’s Iris Prima for the CP. It might be psychological because “Penhaligon” just sounds so very British to my American ears, but Iris Prima feels British to me. Plus it’s one of those why-don’t-I-wear-this-more-often scents for me. I’ve moved it from the back row of the perfume shelf to a more prominent spot now. A thought just occurred: maybe that could make a community project — wear something from the back of your perfume shelf/closet/drawer/whatever?

It’s lovely and quite subtle, and none of the reviews I’ve read match up with my experience of it although Robin’s comes close. On me, there is some powder (but very light and not too sweet), some suede (again, very light), and some iris (not at all carroty), and something else that is probably a combination of some not-at-all sweet vanilla and resin. Almost a clay-like note, but again, very subtle and well blended. It definitely evokes a ballet stage, for me anyway.

Twins with LizzieB in Penhaligon Ostara–think it was a gift w purchase or a freebie, as it’s a rollerball, a delivery system I really don’t care for. Have an estate sale-acquired Floris bottle but didn’t feel like digging for it.
Yesterday C.O. Bigelow sent an email claiming that the best new perfume is Vyrao’s The Sixth, “formulated with scientifically proven ingredients to promote mindfulness, balance the nervous system and diffuse negativity.” Sounds like we should waft it across the country 😉.

I was in London in 2018 and spent over an hour on Harrod’s secret perfume floor talking about fragrance with the Malle rep. I was the only shopper in the Malle area and we had a great discussion. He gave me soooo many samples, body cream and oils in addition to sprays. Today I’m wearing Outrageous from one of the samples. No one mentions this one but I like it a lot. Plus I visited the Tower of London (more of a Henry VIII link than Harrods, I think) to see the crown jewels.

TIL that Crabtree & Evelyn is NOT an English company! I chose their Jasmine de Provence for the CP, thinking C& E were English. Not so. Apparently, they were started in Boston, MA, USA, and had to open a store in England because they had done such a good job convincing the public through their branding that they were English…

This morning I was hurrying to get ready for work and put on Todd Oldham. Then I realized he is American and I had been thinking of Gary Oldman who is English! Lol. I quickly grabbed my Alexander McQueen Something Orchid ( I can never remember the name) I hadn’t wanted to wear it because even though it smells very good at first, it has a ton of ambroxan. I am wearing it though. I am wearing ambroxan for you England!

I’m back in Papillon Bengale Rouge today because it’s so fabulous. I don’t think I have any other British perfumers in my collection, but honesty didn’t spend a lot of time researching it. I would like to wear Salomé but I’m in the office all day and that might be a bit much for non-perfume people.

We’ve been very busy and with the upcoming holiday I’m sure we’ll be fully booked. All reserved sites are already gone. It’s just two of us in the office and it’s a bit like the scene from I Love Lucy when Lucy and Ethel are working at the chocolate factory. Without the bonus of chocolate!🤪

Thanks to all who wished T-Rex well yesterday. She’s doing very well and back (mostly) to her usual routine, including the obsession with Prairie Dogs. She had a dental and a lumpectomy of a spot on her right side. Now just waiting for pathology. She’s digging the kibble soaked in warm chicken broth with shredded chicken heaped on top until her gums are less sore. Also getting an anti-inflammatory for pain and swelling. All of this was done for about half the price of the same procedures quoted to me by the vet when I was in Washington in February. I think the difference is this is a small and large animal hospital that is independently owned. Most vet practices are now owned by corporations whose only interest is profit. Just saw a vet talking about this because veterinary care has become so expensive he fears (justifiably) that people will be put off adopting from shelters because of the cost of care over the animals life time. Then, I go watch the action at Sky Dog Sanctuary and get happy again! 🐴

Really liked Malmaison and liked Seringa but discontinued. I also enjoy the White Rose and Cherry Blossom. I have a bottle of the Honey Oud currently and enjoy it:). I find, the Floris line in general, pretty easy to wear.🙂

Today’s cp was an easy one for me: Penhaligon’s Victorian Posy, reminiscent in so many ways of my one-and-only trip to England with Mr. Laila and my son, who was 16 at the time. The beautiful box, adorable bottle, and the scent itself – Top notes of Galbanum, Hyacinth, Chamomile, Amalfi Lemon and Orange; middle notes of Violet, Rose and Jasmine; and base notes of Oakmoss, Vetiver, Amber, Patchouli and Sandalwood – all remind me of that memorable trip:

-The several hours the 3 of us spent at Penhaligon’s in Coventry Gardens testing, testing, testing, and finally making our purchases. I don’t remember what they bought, just that I fell in love with Victorian Posy.

-Visiting my dearest friend from childhood now living in a small village in England’s West Country, I was amazed at the flowers and gardens, and I vividly recall how tall all their roses 🌹 were compared to ours!

-We visited several small villages and I was also amazed to see that so many of the smallest, humblest cottages (w/o any historical significance) were named, with a sign in front of each proudly displaying it. ❤️

My bottle is down to just a few drops, which says to me I need to make another trip to England soon!

Busy weekend ahead starting with a trip to the ballpark yesterday (Sox are terrible this year but every game we attend they play well and win!🤞), tonite it’s our favorite Chicago troubadour Mark Dvorak at a folk coffeehouse, and then tomorrow nite we’re seeing Carlos Santana (one of Mr. Laila’s contest wins) at an outdoor venue. Wishing all a great weekend ahead!

Would you pay $20 for a 6-month Hulu subscription? I had previously leveraged a free trial of Hulu so I am no longer eligible. I have never seen The Bear and this seems to get a lot of loves. I almost want to say that is about 3 Starbucks frozen / latte drinks and I could “sacrifice” not getting them. Here’s what the NYTimes had to say about The Bear:

$20.00 for 6 months seems like a good deal to me. I haven’t seen The Bear.

Seems like a good deal to me. I ended up seeing The Bear. I really enjoyed it; no spoilers from me, just in case! The new season apparently just started.

That sounds like a very good deal, but I love the The Bear so much I’d pay it just to see that. Hulu also has Only Murders in the Building, Pen15, Normal People, Reservation Dogs, Atlanta, and the fantastic Better Things. And Shogun (which I haven’t watched yet but everyone loves).

Ok, sounds like I have to do it. I used up my free trial to binge Only Murders in the Building. I will watch The Bear for sure and quite possibly Shogun (I remember the very old TV series).

I’m wearing Creed Silver Mountain Water for the CP today. I’m sure my bottle is at least 10 years old, not sprayed for perhaps 15. It’s fine I guess but it just smells like celery to me. Not a bad smell I suppose. I’m wearing it for the royal connection, of course.

Celery?? Uh oh. The only time I have ever smelled it in perfume was in something that had turned.

Has Silver Mountain Water always smelled like celery to you?

I don’t think it’s off or has turned. It was a case of blind buying when I was first getting serious about perfumes and I loved the sound of it but I’ve never actually liked it. I should sell my bottle because it’s nearly full and they’re going for an exorbitant rate now!

It’s Saturday morning here and I’m looking forward to buying some dress fabric. I’ve had my eye on a couple of things for a few months, but I’ve been waiting for a sale – I’ve regularly checked how much is left because I’d rather pay full price than miss out altogether, but the email announcing 40% off arrived last night – yay!
I’ll be at the door when they open, wafting Ormond Jayne Woman, which I bought in London.

Reminds me of my fashion faux pas a couple of days ago:Crocs were 45-50% off!Lol!(So I bought two pairs for work, because they really are comfortable on an OR Nurse’s feet!)
I did go overboard with getting the silver and gold geometric designs,so they are very “crashy”!(classy+trashy…lol)

Happy Friday, all! I hope you’re all feeling your best blooming selves.

In a circuitous way, I hope I’ve met the CP—it was on instinct. I just wanted very much to wear the watery white floral Lascia Ch’io Pianga by Sorcinelli, which feels to me the perfect companion to sitting by the water in one of those London parks. The fragrance takes its name from an aria from the Handel opera Rinaldo, the first Italian-language opera written specifically for the London stage. Sorcinelli’s fragrances aren’t so widely known, and when they are, it’s for his incense heavy work. This one, however, is among my two favorites. It’s heavily. A white floral for lovers of La Chasse aux Papillons, La Haie Fleurie, and Moon Bloom but luxuriously watery.

…and a lemming is born. I just bought a sample from Lucky Scent (Free shipping, including samples, through 7/1 with code WEEKEND).
It sounds like something I’ll love.

I’ve had a sense somewhere down the line that you and I could have similar tastes. I do hope you like it! It’s one of my hands-down favorite perfumes since discovering it at the end of last year.

I’d love to know what other scents you grabbed samples of—and with a free shipping code, maybe it’s finally time for me to indulge again! I get both under and overwhelmed when I go on luckyscent. My hit rate for success has been very, very low, but I think that’s more because everything is filled with harsh “amber” and “cedar”/woods.

I also got samples of Indult Isvaraya, Marissa Zappas Dream Sequence, and PdE Un Belle Amour d’Ete. My success rate is low, too. That’s why I started buying samples instead of buying blind.

Scent twins with Robin today! I was surprised to discover I had at least 2 Ormond Jayne perfumes in The Sample Stash.

But I think what I really wanted to wear was the OG Agent Provocateur EdP. English brand, plus that rose & incense combination sounds rather fitting. Not sure how well it would have behaved with 93 degree temps, though.

SOTD = OJ Champaca, with Vanilla Vibezzz body butter in the usual spots. I have already purchased a second travel size of it.

I don’t think I could wear AP in this humidity.. but I might give it a try.

I have about 1/3 of the original lotion left. Didn’t want to run out of that one. 😉

I figure better safe than sorry with perfume in the height of summer.

I’m wearing a sample of Creed Aventus because I thought Creed was an English house. But then I read on Fragrantica that it is French. Oops! 😳. I have Fragonard’s L’Adventurier on the other wrist, and honestly after the grilled pineapple note of the Creed dries down about 30 minutes in, I cannot tell the two apart.

My tea today definitely was British tho: F&M’s Queen Anne.

This is the first beautiful Friday evening of the year that Mr Vee and I have been home, so we are enjoying it out on the patio with the fire pit roaring.

A lot of Normans came over to Britain around 1066, and they were from France. So points!

I think we’re both CP compliant in Creed today because they came to London a few centuries ago and have long been tailors as well as perfumers to the London bigwigs! Here’s more: https://creedboutique.com/pages/the-history-of-creed.

I’m bringing up the rear tonight and can still faintly smell today’s scent, which was Miller Harris Fleur du Matin. I love this one and think they should have kept it in their lineup. I’m happy I still have a good chunk of my large bottle left. It smells like a lovely, dewy herb and flower garden, greens and all.
