Thursday scent of the day 6/20

Posted by Robin on 20 June 2024 113 Comments

It's Almost-Friday plus the Summer Solstice. Also, World Refugee Day and National Ice Cream Soda Day. Birthdays: Lillian Hellman, Errol Flynn, Chet Atkins, Audie Murphy, Eric Dolphy, Brian Wilson. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Carthusia Mediterraneo.

Reminder: on 6/21, it's summer — the solstice is on Thursday. Celebrate the season with your bestest summer fragrance. If you're in the southern hemisphere, adjust accordingly.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello.
    Sotd is Angelique Noire.
Just got home from the airport. I slept most of the way on the plane, only waking at just *the exact* moment food was being served. Reminded me of my doggo, who can sleep through a thunderstorm but as soon as something like a chip packet rustles, she’d be awake and running.
Robin, Opium Over Red has a prominent cherry top note and luckily not cough syrupy. The cherry is even more obvious on a blotter!

Scent right now: Guerlain Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat. I wanted sparkly citrus, which this delivers. Now I want *all* the sparkly citrus.

    Tea: right now, coffee!

SOTD = Guerlain Eau de Cologne Imperiale

Great while it lasted (8 sprays !!!). The bottle is a bright transparent red and is perfect for today’s scorching 🥵 weather.

Thanks for your input on my question yesterday regarding alcohol consumption. I will reply to each.

Also, I had enough cash to cover the brake lights replacement. AND I was able to get the local handyman to fix my garbage bin doors at a reasonable price, including a tip!

Today’s comment has to do with unstoppable credit-mongering by consumers. I have to admit that I try to be responsible for reviewing charges and question the ones that don’t make sense. Also, I don’t always deal with the merchants on the phone before disputing a charge (WHY would I call a number in Turkey to discuss a $35 charge when I was told something will be delivered to me without additional cost; to my credit, I tried to contact them via email first). Anyway, although not a credit card charge per se, I went back to a bubble tea place to complain about a horrible drink. The worker was pleasant and gave me a free replacement. Now I need to figure out how to get a refund for my year old NJTransit train tickets — these never used to expire but with double-digit fare increases, they saw it fit to impose a 30-day expiration and anything bought on or before June 30, 2024 will expire on July 30, 2024.

Here’s an article from the Wall Street Journal re: credit disputes (may have a pay wall):

Temps will be in the high 80s here today, and I plan to wear either Azemour or Jour d’Hermes (or maybe Eau d’Hadrien EDT — forgot how great that is in the heat) later on, but right now I’m in Rocabar because that’s where the hand went this morning. It’s pretty perfect for the early morning chill we’ve got in the house this morning.

Today I wore Mitsouko, tonight I’m hitting NVC Trayee.
This morning was 2°C but the day and tonight are milder 8-16°C.

Enjoy your warmth in the Northern Hemisphere.

Looks like it’s not going to be *quite* as awful today as they were forecasting: humidex 40-41°C instead of 46, and it might not rain until later this afternoon if at all. I still have to go out into it soon, but at least I might not need an umbrella. Prognostications like this one make me think that meteorology mostly consists of throwing darts at a chart.

Anyway, I’m in the summer greenery of Fragonard Vetiver, not much body and not much lasting power but very breezy and refreshing.

I’m wearing Mandarine Basilic today, expecting temps in the mid-80s. Yesterday’s gel pedicure went reasonably well, and took about the same time as a regular pedicure except the drying time is interspersed with the polishing time instead of coming at the end. Except for a hip cramp it was painless and the boo-boos are not noticeable. I am hoping the polish lasts a month, fingers crossed.

Yes, I think a couple of brands have a gel nail polish and a gel topcoat that don’t require use of UV light. But really, from my personal experience and things I’ve heard others say, this type has the same longevity as a regular polish and top coat, or maybe just a teensy bit longer. Some people prefer it because they don’t have to use a UV light and it can be easily removed with regular polish removal. All personal preference…

Thanks! I used a peel-off base coat (it still cures under UV light) because the removal process otherwise sounds horrid. And I picked UV gel for the reports of longevity.

Another person here missing SmellBent. I’m wearing Gypsy today and hope no one in the office starts sneezing when I go in later. It’s pretty long lasting but still, I don’t go in until 2pm, so hope it’s faded a bit by then…😬

In other scented news, I am missing my dragon candle. So much! 😢 The Rose one is nice (and I’m not a rose lover, so those that are would probably find it exceptionally lovely) but I was a little disappointed in the jar this time. It’s simply a translucent jar with a sticker wrapped around it. Nothing at all like the beautiful Dragon candle jar. Anyway, I was just on their website perusing their new LE candles but the notes didn’t get me excited. There is a Green Tea and Aloe Water one that might have tea lovers in a tizzy and another with Papaya and Agave Nectar…just not my thing. I did keep the old wax from the Dragon candle and have no idea what to do with it. I keep in the fridge and huff it every once in a while.

I bought a couple things off Etsy last week and now I’m obsessively tracking stuff…does anyone else do that? I feel like a five year old watching TV to see where Santa Claus is currently located. Maybe I have too much time in my hands…🙃

      Deva-

I have a question on the Dragon candle. I did get one and haven’t used it yet because I know it is a patchouli scent. Just wondering if that would be too much in the summer. What are your thoughts?

      • Deva says:
        20 June 2024 at 3:31 pm

I personally loved it no matter the temps. I found it to be more of an incense than a patchouli but my nose may be wonky. It’s not “warm” to me like an amber scent, but it certainly doesn’t evoke feelings of coolness, briskness, or refreshment. When you open the box and take off the lid, you’ll smell exactly what you’ll get when you decide to burn it.

It’s a bit chilly here with a miserable driving wind that blasts down the valley, blowing all the birds along with it. I’ve been watching the trees bend and sway, and the poor sparrows trying to maintain their balance when they come down for some seed. The washing is wound tightly around the outside line or blown into the garden. We haven’t had any really hard frosts yet but the wind just finds all the gaps in my clothing and chills to the bone. So, something warm is needed, the perfume equivalent of Sorels . A bit of sweet spice would be good, too. Going for Boucheron now, adding Overture later, then Silky Woods. Too cold for restraint!

I talked to someone at Indigo and they said that their shipment should arrive tomorrow, Fed Ex gods permitting.

I’m wearing what is an uncontroversially good summer fragrance, O de Lancome. (I don’t now how to make the accent mark over the “O”.). My air conditioner seems to be working all right (after the recent repairs). Knock on wood! Unfortunately I’ve got to venture out into the steam bath outside as I need a few crucial things from the store, such as coffee and toilet paper! I might go out for lunch somewhere too but can’t decide where or what I’m in the mood for. Maybe inspiration will strike!

If you have a Costco by you, TP is on sale – unadvertised unless I somehow missed a page in the circular …

Oh. too late, I went to Kroger. We do have a Costco but it’s too huge and daunting for me to shop there. Plus, the parking lot is a zoo.

    Frozen mango and yogurt smoothie

It was Guerlain La Cologne du Parfumeur today, I always enjoy it but it’s by no means a masterpiece, just very pleasant with citrus and orange blossom and no nasty notes but tonight I switched to Angel Innocent because it has great citrus too and a very pleasant drydown of tonka, I tend to wear it spring and summer mostly.

Rain, rain, go away. We are going to be in flood warnings by tonight or tomorrow.

I have been wearing a lot of Hermes Eau des Merveilles so far this summer and absolutely love it! I know it can be worn in any season, but it has definitely been a “go to” scent for me the last few months.

Good morning from my mother’s house in Dunedin. I’m here for a long weekend, and looking forward to catching up with Kanuka on Sunday.
I’m planning to wear Diorling today, my perfume choices when I travel are largely dictated by travel sprays. I make travel sprays when bottles are awkward to carry or the perfumes are particularly precious.

Happy solstice, all! I’m in lavish sprayings of Le Chevrefeiulle to welcome in the summer — and to lift my spirits. All my plans today (gentle forest hike with Boyfriend, evening full-moon bonfire with Biscuit and our respective best friends) fell through, and I’m feeling lonely and let down (by circumstances, not by the people). It’s made me reflect on how social interactions and nourishing time with friends is — rightly — part of what keeps us happy and healthy, but that at the same time when we look to these things outside of ourselves to cheer us up, we set ourselves up for disappointment and ache. Oh, well.

Headed out into the garden to gather a bunch of flowers right at solstice o’clock, for beauty and magical purposes.

    Happy Solstice, NSTers!

Got my first weather-related call from the county reverse 911 service this afternoon. Wasn’t expecting *that*. Fortunately the only thing I have seen so far was rain and a bit of lightning.

Glad I got out around lunchtime while the weather was still nice. I may have found a new vet for Teflon kitty today. My information gathering trip was fruitful.

SOTD = back in Golden Goddess again today.

No tornadoes for me, thankfully! Severe Thunderstorms with the potential for golf-ball-sized hail. Yuck.

My brother suggested I sign up for the reverse 911 feature when I moved out.

Glad the warning was just that! We’ve had a few of the reverse 911 calls (not for the severe heat we’re having) and they always scare the bejesus out of me!

And hooray for possibly finding a new vet for Teflon.

I’ve had a couple of Amber Alerts and Silver Alerts come across on my phone here in Colorado. It’s the same noise from the Emergency Broadcast System that I hated as a kid.

The reverse 911 call today was my usual ringtone.

Tornado sirens went off just as my daughter and I got to the Mall parking lot. I wasn’t really expecting it, as the bad weather has been east of me. Luckily the warning was short lived.
I was able to try the new Drop bottle of No.5 L’eau. I believe it is slightly different than the original. I feel like the aldehyde has been toned down and the vanilla seemed to come out sooner. It’s just my initial thought. The bottle is very cute in person too.

The first time I ever heard a tornado siren it scared the crap outta me. Didn’t really grow up with them, so it came as a big shock.

Do you like the Drop/Egg version of No. 5 L’Eau?
