Wednesday scent of the day 6/19

Posted by Robin on 19 June 2024 113 Comments

Happy Hump Day and happy Juneteenth! Birthdays: Blaise Pascal, Lou Gehrig, Pauline Kael, Salman Rushdie, Ann Wilson. RIP Willie Mays. What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with Le Labo Bergamote 22.

Reminder: on 6/21, it's summer — the solstice is on Thursday. Celebrate the season with your bestest summer fragrance. If you're in the southern hemisphere, adjust accordingly.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

The air conditioner is in and running as of 9:30 last night. The window had to be removed and a box built to hold the unit, then the electrician had to come by (he lives in the neighborhood) to run the breaker. Our house is small enough that one big window unit cools the whole thing.
Wearing Messe di Minuet for cooling incense today, one of my summer favorites.

A wonderfully cool morning, high is supposed to be 68-70F. Perfect, but sadly I’m in the office most of the day.

I met some beautiful Yellow Warblers yesterday. Their first day out of the nest and they were trying SO hard to fly. Poor mom and dad were being run ragged flitting back and forth between the babies to feed them and keep them rounded up. Later in the evening I had to do a death dIve out of my camper as a worker was blasting through the area on her golf cart. In the words of Gandalph The Grey “You shall not pass!” All traffic was rerouted to save lives… 👮‍♀️

Here’s a sweet little clip for those interested. Happy Hump Day!

      Awww, so cute!

Once, a pigeon decided to lay an egg in a plant pot I had outside. It had soil in it, I forgot what I was trying to grow in it lol. But eventually, I got to see the egg hatch and see the bird fly on its own. It was the cutest thing.

Demeter Grass is pretty summery! Not the accurate representation of a freshly mown lawn I’d hoped for, but still nice and green.

We’re in the middle of a heat wave: going up to 34°C in a couple hours, humidex of 43°, and tomorrow it’ll be worse, thunderstorms and a humidex of 46°. Thank goodness for air conditioning.

For me, “bestest summer fragrance” is a toss-up between Azemour and Jour d’Hermes. This morning I’m in Jour d’Hermes Absolu from a tiny spray sample, and tomorrow (the actual solstice) I will have to toss the proverbial coin.

My DIY project is still not done. My next door neighbor is having work done on their door so I decided to ask for an estimate on how much it would cost to fix the doors … still waiting.

In other news, your thoughts please on alcohol consumption. I am interested to know if, despite the ping-pong-like studies, whether or not you have abstained from or continue to drink. I used to usually only have one drink a week (literally one) and nowadays, unless I am on vacation, out to lunch / dinner or at a party, I don’t drink at all. It’s not for health reasons whatsoever. I am also trying to decide if I should give away (or throw out) several 750mL bottles and little ones that came in an advent calendar-like packaging; these are all a few years old. Anyway, here’s an article that may be of interest:

Interesting article. My own consumption is minimal, mainly because I can’t afford empty calories anymore, but partly because I believe that alcohol and refined sugar are basically poisons. I consume both anyway but try to keep the quantities very low.

Oy! I could be poisoning myself since I don’t abstain from alcohol AND I just switched back to brown sugar (from monkfruit). This said, I do want to watch the empty calories.

I don’t abstain completely from alcohol but rarely imbibe these days for a couple of different reasons that no one but me cares about. I do resent people who pressure others to drink during outings/events/get togethers. MYOB, is what I say. 🙃
My upcoming trip to France is heavy on the wine tasting and I’m pretty sure I’ll be opting out of those.

I am a recovering alcoholic and haven’t had a drop for over 27 years, however I think like anything else that if it is done in moderation, it probably isn’t going to hurt you. That is just my opinion. I have seen several articles similar to this and I know people that have lived to be 100 and had a glass of wine or a cocktail every night with few health problems. I think it really comes down to a personal decision. Just because I don’t drink, it certainly doesn’t bother me when others do.

My ethanol consumption went way down in 2020, for a reason that you can probably guess. I still have an occasional “adult beverage” and do have a well stocked liquor cabinet. I plan on using things up and not replacing most of them to thin it out.

There is some family history of alcohol misuse disorder.

I like to drink, but more for the flavor than any inebriation (I actually can’t stand being drunk!) I usually only have a beverage once or twice a week.

I’m on a new medicine where I have to be pretty careful of my liver so I’m a bit more discriminating about it.

I’ve realized that I enjoy a cocktail for the taste and the ritual — and am now perfectly happy with a non-alcoholic gin and tonic at home. I pretty much only have actual hard liquor if we are out for dinner (rarely) and I start with a cocktail, although I’ve had some pretty great mocktails when dining out, too. I’ve switched almost exclusively to NA beer, after finding a couple I like.

Wine is harder. We live in a wine-producing area, so it’s everywhere — but still, Mr. Skal and I generally stretch a single bottle across two days (open for Friday dinner, finish for Saturday dinner, and sometimes open a second one for Sunday dinner).

Someone (SheriG?) mentioned above that they think alcohol and refined sugar are pretty much poison, and I have come to agree. I’m not working to exclude either completely from my own diet, but the positive difference when I do not consume them is pretty clear. I just feel better.

I’m glad you have found a non-alcoholic substitute that is satisfying! I haven’t found something that replaces a neat Scotch but I have had quite a few mocktails that satisfy.

I used to open so many bottles of wine at home, only to drink a glass and a half! Now I only buy wine to bring to dinner with friends.

The weather has been so rainy and humid the last several days, it is hard to know what to put on for clothes and perfume. Today the sun is coming out and it is cool, but it is still humid. Decided to go with Dusita La Douceur de Siam. Very pretty rose scent.

    Hello all!

I pulled out Une Voix Noire last night for bed and I liked it so much I wore it today today too. It’s a pretty quiet scent but I love leaning in to smell it.

    Have a great day everyone!

It really is, a hopefully gardenia with a bit of strawberry jam and a velvety base.

Thinking “Summer” in Kenzo “Winter Flowers,” a Flower flanker that leans just a little sweeter. I like sweetness, and I don’t notice all *that* much difference from the original. So very hot and humid here so a powdery scent like Flower is very nice for me. *****
Bug haters alert: skip this. For the first time in my life – let’s just say more than 50 years – I got a bug stuck in my ear today! Being an outdoorsy person, and somewhat curious about this event, I decided since it did not sting or bite, I would see if I could lure it out. Sat next to a bright light for a while and…nothing. But it was moving. Yeah, that’s a little creepy. Consulting a home first aid book, I then followed the directions to fill my ear with olive oil. That did the trick. It floated out after about 20 minutes (Mr. Mossy was my assistant in this). It was the tiniest bug – smaller than a fruit fly – quite surprising to see.

How did you know it was in your ear, being so small?

I could feel movement and it would sometimes lightly buzz! It was a put 2 + 2 +2 together moment, because to start with, I was working outside and brushed at something tickling my ear. Then it continued.

Seriously! I had a bee fly close to my ear the other day while on a walk and I definitely reacted in crazy fashion. A bug stuck in the ear is a thing of nightmares.

Another day without needing the A/C on. I am really enjoying this all too brief respite from scorching summer heat. Temps in the mid to upper 90’s will be back very soon. July The Hot, ya know.

So no one showed up yesterday to deal with the wasps nest. Grrrrrrrrrrrr! Time to go back to the office and ask WTH is going on. And get a can of wasp/hornet/yellowjacket spray, just in case.

SOTD = still in Golden Goddess today.

Oh no on the wasps. We had a similar situation 2 years ago. We had to take our own can of wasp spray to deal with the situation so we could get our mail. It was eventually dealt with, but different story when you’re trying to get your mail now!

      Drat!!

I’m sure you already know, but if you spray it yourself, wait until dusk, or get up very early in the morning.

It’s warmed up here in Seattle today, but I know it’s nothing compared to most of the country’s heat wave. As I applied sunscreen before going on a walk and cookie-getting expedition, I wanted to put on a perfume that would mesh well with the scent of sunscreen. I ended up grabbing the big bottle of Pacifica Indian Coconut Nectar hair and body spray. There’s nothing like wearing the scent of coconut in the warm sun! Oh, and I have cookies to look forward to tonight.

Cookie getting expedition sounds fun! We have a cookie store here, but I haven’t been in yet. Maybe I will treat myself there soon.

We got brown butter snickerdoodle, flourless chocolate, and s’mores cookies, which were cookies over graham crackers. We didn’t eat them all tonight so there’s more to look forward to tomorrow.
