Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ open thread, mid June 2024

Posted by Robin on 15 June 2024 169 Comments

June is ambling by...the solstice is coming up on Thursday, and midsummer is generally somewhere between Friday and Monday depending on where you live (unless you live in the Southern Hemisphere, in which case this is all backwards and you know what to do.) We're getting ready for the longest day of the year with our standard-issue open thread poll.

Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the perfect fragrance for a long and possibly scorching hot summer night, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

I’m in my most recent discovery, Hermes Rocabar EDT. The FB arrived, and its juice is slightly less fougère-y up top, which suits me just fine. Fragrantica says it has top notes of Cedar Essence, Juniper, Coriander, Lemon and Bergamot; middle notes of Italian Cypress, Cedar, Cardamom, Carnation and Violet; and base notes of Canada Balsam, Benzoin, Oakmoss, Vanilla and Patchouli. I can suss out a lot of those, but it’s extremely well blended and all of the discernible notes are so understated that it feels gentle and elegant and is very easy to wear. It reminds me a bit of Agar Ébène, without the oud note.

I am indeed. With this addition, Hermes has surpassed Chanel as the most-represented house in my collection, and I had to rearrange the perfume shelf as a result.

Can’t wait for summer to slide into fall! Already over this terrible heat (and the horrible fires), although it was very cloudy yesterday and it wasn’t *as bad* as it has been. Today will be a different story…🥵. In an effort to beat the heat I’m in copious sprays of Nice Bergamote by Essential Perfumes. Very forgettable, imo.

In other non-perfume news, I knew it would happen eventually and yesterday was the day. Was walking doggo along the Group Loop which has no campers at the moment (we are otherwise COMPLETELY full!) when she dove headfirst into some brush and popped out with a prairie dog in her mouth. She dropped it as soon as I told her to, but I think that initial chomp was fatal, although it might have taken a few minutes. Poor thing! I said a prairie dog prayer and we left it in peace.

I can tell you stories that you would not believe about people trying to get a camp site. Some very dirty dealings and unscrupulous behavior. We’ve stopped being nice and trying to accommodate everyone’s endless requests. Instead, we’ve had to put on our business faces and start saying “No!” and “Absolutely not!” and “There is a $50 fine for such and such behavior.” People are sometimes ridiculous…🙄 We live in a world where being nice gets you nothing but trouble, which is sad.

To sum it up, don’t be nice and you’ll have a great weekend! 🙃

I laughed and cried at all your life recounting! I believe people are basically good until they’re not. And poor prairie dog! Hopefully T-Rex had learned her lesson and won’t do it again.

Ha! Her success has just whetted her appetite for prairie dog destruction. If I let her, she would stand for hours in the blazing sun over a prairie dog hole, just like a polar bear standing vigilant over a seal air hole. When she’s in the camper, she’s glued to a window watching them pop up and down, and scurry all around. She’s obsessed. As for people, I think they’re mostly nice until they don’t get their way…then watch out!

If she’d like to come here and stalk our moles (and the bunny that has, completely expectedly, turned into two bunnies, both of which have reduced my hostas to sticks), I’m all for it. I might even pay. Gah.

    SOTD = Chanel No.5 L’Eau

… from the Egg. The package finally arrived around 3:30pm yesterday, still impressive! I almost had a package opening fail this morning as the box slipped off my hands! It is a thing of beauty. As to the juice, my unsophisticated nose perceived a reformulation: it’s more rounded and slightly more powdery and feminine. I love it though, so there’s that!

I’m getting a head start on experiencing the East Coast heat wave firsthand—thanks to the 6 train’s AC giving out in a packed car. I’m now well-acquainted with both the extreme humidity and everyone’s unique body odor. It’s like a smelly sauna on wheels! 🚋💦👃

After this incident I went to the farmers market and thunked my sample of Cristalle Verte-this is a nice fragrance for a heat wave.

After the shower Memo’s Ilha Do Mel

Reading a YA fantasy book and another book at the same time. Does anyone here use NYPL to take out books. Wondering what everyone’s experience is like. I adore my library branch so much.

I use the NYPL electronic borrowing program — since I am NY State, but not NYC, resident. I would bet that I learned about it here on NST, maybe from you or from hajusuuri?

Anyway, I’m quite happy with it — it has been an especially useful way to preview titles that I want to use for teaching but for which I cannot get review copies from the publisher. I’d say I’ve had a 60% success rate — some titles are there but the waitlist is long, and a few haven’t been part of the collection.

Not the same as browsing at a branch, but still a great resource. And yes, I do have a local public library, plus my institutional one, but neither is likely to have the kinds of books I am working with these days.

I’m glad you’re finding it useful for previewing titles for your teaching. While it might not replace the experience of browsing in a physical branch, the convenience and access it provides are definitely valuable. The waitlists can be a bit of a hurdle sometimes, but overall, it sounds like you’re making good use of the service. It’s also nice to have your local and institutional libraries as additional resources, even if they don’t always have the specific titles you need.

Feeling all warm and spicy in “Opus IV” from Amouage. I gather it’s a polarizing one, probably due to the prominent cumin note, but, boy oh boy, do I love this stuff.

I liked yesterday’s leather so much, today I am wearing another: Orto Parisi Cuoium. Also, the summer pants search was successful and I got four pairs. Plus, I discovered illusion earrings! I am too chicken to go through another piercing although I like the look of multiple earrings. Illusion earrings use one hole to give the impression that there are more. Google “illusion earrings” and you’ll see. I bought three sets.

We’re having the heat wave here today; temps may go as high as 98. I’ve already been out watering my potted plants this morning and am now running soaker hoses under two flowerbeds. Went to our local farmer’s market for the first time this season; I love it so much! This one has lots of stalls with prepared foods, including a great local bakery. We’re having the kids over tomorrow night for a Father’s Day dinner on the grill, so I got some goodies for that and will head out again later today to get the mains.

SOTD is Nicolai’s Rose Pivoine, sent to me by a kind reader of my blog, and it is just lovely! Perfect for a hot summer day. Floral, fresh, light. I hope everyone stays cool this weekend!

It really is. I have had good luck with Nicolai fragrances, but I lean toward florals generally. A surprise to me was how much I like her Musc Intense! Wasn’t really expecting to love it, but I found a great deal on it and had enjoyed other fragrances by her, so I took a chance. And I do love it. I’m not usually drawn to “musky” notes but this is a very clean musk.

A hot L.A. day, perfect for the original Trussardi Donna, which does that gorgeous Italian perfumery thing I love of being light but also crammed with viscous oily green herbs and aromatics. It’s umami for the nose and the Italians own this style of perfumery. The ginger note drifts in and out delightfully. I also finally have ID’d what this one reminds me of: it’s Fendi light! The d/c original Fendi by Fendi. Without as much oakmoss and the Coco-style spices that Fendi is known for. Trussardi Donna came out in 1993 in a clear bottle and is now d/c though there is a new different one with the same name in a white bottle which I was disappointed by. Fendi came out in 1985. I received this decant in a swap from a very generous NSTer. Thank you!

That’s a hard one as there are probably 100 different fragrances and it depends on what you like. I usually like the ones by Jo Malone. Many liked Livre Blanc by Olivia Giacometti though there was something in it I didn’t like. It is very clean and crisp. Although marketed for men, it is definitely unisex. There are also several by Alberto Morillas.

I just broke my 3 bottle buying limit with 2 Zara purchases, getting (Vetivyrich) and (Flower Please). And I bought unsniffed, which I normally don’t do but the men’s Zara fragrance section in the store was pitiful and there was no way I could try them. On the plus side, each bottle was about $27 so the 2 were about $68 with shipping.

Somehow my FOMO is stronger with the cheap Zara fragrances because they discontinue a lot or sell out.

You have to go in knowing what you want. And then you find out they don’t have it. Knowing our stores here, you’d never find an associate who knew anything at all about the scents. I bought everything recently unsniffed, just guessing. (It was so cheap it was perfume-math free. Leather Jardin was great but the Olivia Giacobetti scent I got was meh. But CA$30 of meh, so not complaining.)

I don’t have a Zara store near me, so I have no idea what they are like. I have just ordered unsniffed by what people have told me and for the price, I am okay if they don’t work.

I love Leather Jardin. I also enjoy Fleur de Patchouli. However, Jo Malone was really what sent me down the rabbit hole many years ago. I thought I was going to like Livre Blanc by Olivia Giacobetti, but there was something that just didn’t sit right with me after wearing it a few times.

I’m wearing Bronze Goddess today, in 3 formats. The cooling body spray, some of the spray oil and a few sprays of the eau fraiche. I’m nearly out of the oil, so a future thunk is close.

We are having the Father’s Day celebration tonight for my hubby’s dad. Tonight they’ll be able to take a picture of the 4 generations so it should be a special picture. We’re just having burgers and salads plus I made lemon cupcakes with a delicious raspberry icing.

A mix of blue skies and showers today, very British weather.

I am retrying Sana Jardin samples after watching a review on YouTube, Nubian musk and Celestial patchouli which is proving a winner, I had used the set a first time when purchased last year and while I liked several I did not feel compelled to purchase bottles.

My perfumista meet up yesterday was so much fun! We are a very casual group of four and I’m old enough to be everybody’s mom lol. But one is French and I just kept writing down pronunciations of everything. There were a sample sets from Parfums de Nicolai and Montale. I fell for Montana Intense Cafe and I’m now looking for a decant. Another hit with me is Jason Wu Velvet Rouge, a rose incense that’s very pretty and cheap. I shared my Chanel No 5 L’Eau and some samples, and we helped one member find her summer rose perfume (she chose Diptique Eau Capitale.) Fun all around.
I made myself a little decant of the Jason Wu and it’s my sotd.

Got off early enough from work to dash over to the mall to exchange a skirt, ended up buying a pair of pants, an upgrade to the men’s chino pants I am wearing today. I have trouble finding pants because I am not a fan of synthetic fabric, stretch, pleats and high rise so there are not a lot of options lately. I managed to find women’s loose chinos, perfect.

Went unscented today for the mall excursion. Sniffed a bit at Sephora and then discovered that Neiman Marcus here has Byredo – yikes! Also, noted that Anthropologie has some of the same Solinotes as my local grocery store.

I didn’t buy any fragrance while out shopping but then ordered 2 Zara fragrances, (Vetiverich) and (Flower Please), breaking my 3 bottle a year limit. At least they are inexpensive. I’ll be confessing to Donatello later . . .

Frightfully hot, even for here at 97 but our long-awaited AC part finally came in. We are limping along with weekly Freon boosts until it gets installed. Maybe something be achy for Father’s Day. Daughter is cooking dinner for Dad so I benefit also.

    Today is my Son’s Birthday.
We both took the day off and pretty much just hung out. We went to the big mall so he could spend some birthday money. We ate fast food, cupcakes and triple chocolate brownie ice cream. We stopped and saw my brother who is still recovering from surgery. The weather has been beautiful all day. The heatwave starts tomorrow.
    Sotm is No.5 L’eau.

A nice cool start to our heatwave, which sets up today. Our air conditioner is still not in stock and we were (obviously) hoping to have it installed by now, I’ll have to dig out info on keeping cool from my memories of no AC growing up, and living in Houston.

Oh my, living in Houston without a/c must have been quite a challenge. Mine is now (mostly) fixed, but while it was on the blink I set up some fans, which really helped. I also bought one of the small so-called portable air conditioners from Amazon, which are really a kind of glorified fan. It has a reservoir in which you put cold water and ice, and then it blows nice cold air over you. You can get them for around $40 and they help a lot. If your problem is going on for awhile, there are larger units that are around $350 that might do a lot better at keeping one room cool. Just search for portable or personal air conditioners on Amazon or Walmart, etc.

My SOTD is Tubereuse 2 Virginale, which I found when looking for something else in a sample box. I like this a lot. It’s old now and has a sort of musty-musky undertone, but the main scent is still a delightfully fruity floral that does not have the overpowering quality of some tuberose fragrances.

My A/C is finally fixed, though I’m warned it still will need another repair soon–if not replacement. Ugh. Meanwhile, my roof needs attention and we have a forecast of very heavy rains and potential flooding starting on Tuesday. The joys of home ownership.

Today’s Washington Post has an article about kidney transplants for cats. They use a donor cat from a shelter and you must adopt the donor cat as part of the deal. It costs $25,000. Much as I love my cats, even if I had the money to do it I don’t think I would. It just doesn’t seem right to me. Would you?

I wondered whether transplants were possible in pets. I saw that article too, but Bertie Wooster is 14 and as much as I love him, I can’t see spending 25K. I hold a “quality of life” philosophy for animals and people and the surgery and then the after care raises doubts for me about how happy a pet would be post-surgery.

No. I love my cat, though not as much (don’t tell her) as her sweet predecessor who died at age 2 due to FIV (bad shelter, it’s been shut down since). And I loved my spouse’s family’s cat, who lived to 19. But at a certain point $25k is only going to make you feel better, not your cat.

No. My Larry is ten years old and there are so many cats that need homes, I’d rather let him live out his life and then adopt another.

    • Glannys says:

The problem for me is you can’t ask for the donor’s consent in this case, and it does not feel right. I love my cat to pieces and feel sad just thinking she will die one day, but this idea makes me feel uncomfortable. Maybe if the donor was dying from something else but had a healthy kidney…
And if the quality of life is much worse for her after this surgery, it is probably not worth it.

    • Jalapeno says:
      17 June 2024 at 6:35 pm

No. As Glannys points out, the donor cat can’t agree to the procedure. It comes off as exploitative.

As much as I have loved all of my cats, I would never consider it, even if I could afford it. And at $25k, there is no way.

I bought a BUB a few months ago and the price was reasonable. However, it was much more difficult to find a NIB bottle. If it’s a staple in your perfume wardrobe I say get a bottle before there’s none to be had. If it’s just an occasional “like” in your routine, I’d forget it and focus on something else.

Now, I saw a single jar at on a “discount” perfume site for $122…wowza! I will enjoy what I have and won’t be it replacing any time soon.😢

The weather is a bit less gloomy today and warmer and it really lifted my mood. Smoothie will be frozen mango, juice of a lemon and yogurt but I’m yet to make it. It was a fragrant day as I received an order from Zara which contained two t-shirts and a bottle of Soleil Blanc, lemming behaviour, it is a green, watery coconut which faded to a very pleasant drydown, it lasts four hours which is good enough for me and no ambroxan. I needed a coconut and it will do very well, I think, a bit tired of my BG and want to save it as it is the 1st edition. Glad to confess here, I won’t repeat to Donatella. I also received today BPAL Creepy, all butterscotch apple, rum and coconut, a seller on eBay puts bottles regularly for auction, starting price was £8 for an untouched bottle and I won for £9.50, over the the years I collected four bottles but they take no space at all and oils don’t count right?

PG Grand Siecle is the perfect lemon-y cologne for this weather.

Ha, I will be celebrating whether I like it or not 🙂

Might have to hit the pool this week.

Bill Blass Nude is a nice summer scent and low key enough for midterms. Chemistry without a lab, mostly done remote is pretty damn boring but I need it for my degree. Of course, once I graduate and take my boards at the end of next year then I’ll just ignore all things chemistry, just like I’ve been doing since the last time I took it (40 years ago when I was in 11th grade!)

Good luck on the midterms thegoddessrena! I am pretty sure I barely passed chemistry the first time 🙂

Another day, another Ozone Action Day Alert. Yay.

In addition to Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, Teflon kitty also has a taste for Orange Creamsicles. I had a strong urge for some during the last heat wave, and picked them up at the grocery store. Tef kitty pesters me the entire time I am having one. She wants her share!

SOTD = back in Baby Phat Golden Goddess. It’s proving to be a hot weather no-brainer for me this summer.

We have had a couple of those lately, I think here they are called Orange Air Quality Action Days but I imagine (?) they are the same thing.

If they are telling people to limit driving gasoline powered vehicles and not fill up their tanks until a certain time of day, then yes. Ozone pollution.

Some states have the gas station restrictions. Fortunately, Colorado does not.

Late to the party! Lots of sweaty outside work and exercise walks; I love being outside in any weather, but the last few days brought back the 90’s, degrees that is, to my town and I was not quite ready. But I found two perfumes that are in the category of good to wear when you’re going to be in lovely air conditioning after working in the heat then getting cleaned up: Insolence and Bijan. Also thinking about Kenzo Flower.

I should be taking sweaty exercise walks but I am not 🙂

I did manage yoga today, in the nicely air conditioned gym.

Best Summer fragrance #1 in no particular order is AA Pamplelune. It’s so zesty!
