Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ Haiku challenge 2024!

Posted by Robin on 18 May 2024 298 Comments

(PSA: the splitmeet is now open for business!)

Today, our fifteenth annual Haiku Challenge (if you like, you can check out past years for inspiration). We're also happy to include other forms of poetry if haiku don't inspire you. Have a perfume-related limerick or a sonnet you'd like to share? Please do.

If you're writing a haiku, pick a perfume or a perfume house (or really, anything related to perfume), and write a haiku about it.

Use the simplified English form — your haiku should have three lines, the first line with five syllables, the second line with seven syllables and the third line with five syllables. You can put the perfume name in the title if that makes it easier, and at any rate, don’t stress over the rules of traditional haiku — this is just for fun.

Or, as always, just talk about something else.

Note: top image shows Inro, Netsuke and Ojime, signed Koma Yasumasa, ca. 1750-1850, Pfungst Gift, via Victoria and Albert Museum. (And you can read more about these traditional Japanese carrying cases at Wikipedia.)

    Alright, here we go.

    Givenchy Organza Indecence

    Vanilla and woods
Don’t ask her, “Are you decent?”
    The creamy temptress.

    Van Cleef & Arpels First

    First warmth after cold,
    First flowers after winter,
    Sparkling like jewels.

    Tom Ford Shanghai Lily

    White flower opens
    To the darkness of spices
    And goes up in smoke.

I am very bad at haiku composition, and poetry in general doesn’t seem to be in my wheelhouse. That said, I do enjoy reading haiku so I’m looking forward to everyone else’s contributions.

SOTM is Agar Ébène, for which I’m trying to make new and more pleasant memories. It was the only scent I took with me when Mr. G and I went on a cruise last fall, and while I loved the scenery, I didn’t really like the “cruise experience”. And there was the whole issue of the forgotten passport (not mine; nuff said). I do love AE, just need different associations for it, and today begins the process of making them.

Okay, that wasn’t perfume related. Here’s another (not great) attempt — an ode to Chanel 19’s iterations:

        Roses and iris
        Or galbanum and leather
        Your choice of heaven

With you on the cruise experience. We’ve done it twice, both times on Disney, both times with young children (and both times paid for by my father), and it made sense in those circumstances (kids club! princess meet ups! adult-only side of the boat!). I don’t see it happening now.

Like SheriG, I’m not great at haikus, so this will be a spectator sport for me.
I’m in Acne Studios par Frederic Malle from a sample. I immediately purchased a sample (a 2 pack actually) from the FM website after Robin’s recent article on Understated Brilliance. I’d also like to try Dior’s New Look.
Not sure that I love this one, but it is nice. Very strong on the aldehydes and I’ve seen several comparisons to no 22. I’ve not tried that one-shudder, I know- so I can’t speak to that. This morning I’m getting a sweet tart note, must be the orange blossom. I’ll enjoy my sample, but the price for this one is crazy.

    Yves Rocher Orange
    Et Chocolat: just what it
    Says on the label

Felt like wearing it today, although it’s bright and sunny out and this does have a wintry feel, although that might just be because it was a Christmas 2010 limited-edition release and also my association between Christmas and a Terry’s Chocolate Orange, which by the way is no longer called that but merely a Terry’s Orange because it’s no longer made with actual chocolate but with “chocolatey confection” — imagine my disappointment last December. I’ll certainly never buy one again. But I have a bottle of this, which is enough to last a lifetime.

The flight home was okay except that the people behind us talked NON-STOP, particularly the two blatherskites diagonally opposite who never once stopped to draw breath except that one time when the man went to the washroom. Otherwise, an unending stream of gabble, loud enough of course to hear one another over the engine, which is to say loud enough for everyone in a twenty-foot radius to hear as well. It was so bad I had to put in my earbuds and put on some music to drown them out.

Ugh. We had a similar experience in a high-end restaurant last night — the table next to us (and of course the tables are very close to each other) was a group of 3 couples and we were on the man side (because the women and the men only spoke to others of the same gender). The guy closest to us had pre-gamed, I would say, and was bellowing at the other two the whole night, with obscenities liberally laced into the “conversation.” I WISH I could have put in earbuds!

And…what is it with high-end restaurants that make their spaces so LOUD? (Sorry, separate rant, but both here and in Toronto I’ve been to too many nice restaurants where the space is loud, the music is loud, and everyone has to shout to be heard.)

We were in Vancouver (the Canadian version). It’s been a while since I’ve been to a really nice U.S. restaurant…probably the latest was Canlis in Seattle, and it’s not that loud, as I recall. But yeah, I think it can be a cross-border phenomenon.

I’m with you on the questioning the volume in restaurants. They are so loud, and it is so hard to have a conversation with your dining companion…

They have done studies, and restaurants with louder noise levels get more repeat business and a younger, bigger-spending crowd. Restaurants know this, even if some of us (me included) hate it.

No haikus here…trying to finish breakfast and get packed up to go to my sister’s house. Typical Canadian trip — I need a bunch of stuff for Ockeghem Teen to go to canoe/backpacking camp this summer, and REI is the best place now that our Canadian version is more or less gone. And I’m availing myself of all the other things I can get down there but not here, or for much less down there.

    Spices scent the breeze,
    Morocco dreams unfold
    Farm fields whisper past

This is for “Watch Us Dance” a novel by Leïla Slimani, a book about Morocco in the 1960s. The story looks into the lives of a French-Moroccan family navigating the cultural and political upheavals of the era.
While reading this book I have been wearing two Amouages, one is Journey Woman, the other from a generous NSTer you sent me sample of Opus X.

Thanks to Kanuka, who posted the Guardian article here, I now have two more books added to my growing stack. These are novels Slimani read that influenced her writing.

Sitting by the lake where we are camping. I don’t always bring fragrance but this time I brought this warm weather favorite.

And that should be “summer” in the first line, no thanks to spell check for not catching that!

It was Flower Moon, which billed itself as jasmine, peach and vanilla. Sounded, suss, like it might be too sweet, but I’ve had good luck with Pacifica in the past, so I thought it would be worth trying. Waaaay too sweet for me.

Sniffed the new Lush Bridgerton perfume today and really liked it. Haven’t looked up notes, but the top is fresh and grassy, lightly sweet with a herbal base.

Thinking if there is anything I want to put up for the splitmeet… There isn’t really a perfume I’m dying to add to my collection, so I might pass on hosting this time.

Yay, Haiku Challenge! I was also looking forward to this.

    The scent of lilacs
    Carried on a warm breeze
    A new spring beginning.

    “2024”

So many people here have been talking about lilacs this spring that it was a natural subject.

    Thinking of haiku
As I drive to Costco since
    I need groceries.

Another “slice of life” haiku inspired by real life events. Happier than the one I wrote last year.

SOTD = commando, but wearing Korres’ Grecian Gardenia body butter in the usual spots.

Commando today as I get ready for a walk.

Yesterday, tested out Delina sample again.

Despite my angst about excess of perfumes, I have managed to fit most of them on a shelf in the bathroom. The shelf has some rope lighting that I use infrequently but it is fun to turn on sometimes. My inspiration is liquor bottles. Someday, if we redo our bathroom, I would like to have built in illuminated shelving.

    So many bottles
    Glowing like a swanky bar
    Mists of daily joy

Oh, boo! I think a lot of my purchases are driven by fear of missing out, as if some of the perfumes are going to disappear. Trouble is that some of the ones I like HAVE disappeared.

PDM Delina seems a bit overpriced. I was hoping to find something similar at a lower price. I was going to check out that Nest fragrance someone mentioned. But I notice PDM has some small bottles and 30 ml might be just fine.

    Loving all the haikus!

Thought I’d post this, for anyone interested: There’s an article in the New York Times this morning about how now tween boys are going for designer fragrances, instead of Axe, inspired by TikTok: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/19/style/designer-cologne-fragrance-teen-boys.html?unlocked_article_code=1.tE0.O6Zb.KAPh8b2QicWI&smid=url-share (gift link)

I guess we’re all “smellmaxxing” now — who knew? I realized the author of the article is young when she cited foundational men’s colognes worn by high schoolers in the ’80s and did not mention Polo. Man, I could not run fast enough from a guy wearing Polo in the late ’80s, and it was impossible to get away since they were ALL wearing it and way too much of it.

I read it this morning and found it highly entertaining. I loved the discussion of notes and what scent for what occasion. They’ve obviously watched some perfume blogs. I say, “welcome to the party!” There might be one in there who really stays with it and becomes a creator. I do hope, however, these kids are spending their own earned or allowance money rather than being indulged. I have a co-worker who is a struggling (now-single) mom of 3 kids. One of the boys goes through Axe like crazy. I told her she needs to make him chip in on the purchase or set a limit on how much is bought each month.

Yeah, I kind of laughed at the bit where some analyst says that brands like Gauthier are hoping that as these boys mature, they’ll stay with the brand. Ha! Not if they truly get into perfume! (I wore Acqua di Gio all through the ’90s and early ’00s and I haven’t bought an Armani scent since. 🙂 ) But I do hope they stay with us, as our world will smell much better!

I think they did mention at least one kid who spent his bar mitzvah money on perfume, and some parents who are trying to make them thoughtful about their purchases, but it’s a whole different level of $!

I watched the Tik Tok videos and was rather astounded by the young boys’ articulateness. Even if they’re being spoiled, as some sound like, I still applaud the fact that they can speak so well, and enthusiastically, compared to my image of the usually sullen male adolescent.

I’m loving all the witty haikus!

I made it to the mall today and got to sniff La Comete. My first impression and summary, it’s an amalgamation of several Chanel scents. Upon first spray on blotter, I was surprised it reminded me a bit of No 5, specially No 5 l’eau. Then I get this lipsticky violet/iris thing that reminds me of Misia. That goes away and the drydown on my skin is a powdery musk. It’s very pleasant and not linear, but an easy pass for me, phew! The Coromandel body oil on the other hand….. I have to try my best to completely dismiss, because my wallet is shuddering.

I made it to Lush but did not spot the new Bridgerton perfume.

If it helps to tame the lemming, one con of the body oil is that the scent is quite soft, especially when compared to the Coromandel EDP.

I’m on a Chanel No. 19 EdP kick of late. And, of course, now wanting the EdT. Thank goodness I can smell this one.

Been busy lately. We got the kittens. Claire and Fanny. We’ve never had kittens. We kept them in the den for the first 10 days or so. Finally felt comfortable opening up the door. They’re hugely entertaining and into everything. They’re small but make a wonderfully thundering sound when they race and chase each other. And the wrassle like crazy. They seem to like us. My guess is Claire has chosen my husband. He’s her person.

I just went to my desk to log in for work and found my keyboard on the floor along with my notebook. I need a moat.

No poetry here, just a complete, post-conference spritz-orama. It’s been remarkably random, as anything that catches my eye I immediately put on, trying not to overlap. Happily, at one of the lunch breaks I got to talk about perfume, and instead of dithering over the classic question, “which is your favourite?” I simply mentioned Dusita’s Douceur de Siam.

    Has thwarted my best sleuthing
    Leaving me bereft

Story behind the haiku: a lovely neighbor gave me a baggie of samples, six of them from House of Sillage, a brand I’ve never tried. The problem: the names have worn off so I have no way to ID them. Arggghh. Y’all can relate to this perfumista conundrum, I know. The one I just tried is quite orange in color, it’s a BWF, and smells a LOT like AG Songes IIRC.

A little tired this Monday afternoon. My brother had a colonoscopy scheduled in the morning, so I was up and about a couple of hours before my usual time. The place he goes to requires that someone be present for the entire procedure to give the patient a ride home.

We both got skeeved out when he was told “You were the first good cleanse of the day!” Ack. The implications of that statement, especially since he wasn’t the first patient of the morning. 😱

Under the first Tornado Warning of the season here. Oh joy. 🌩️🌪️

A Tornado Watch means that there is potential for tornadoes to form. A Tornado Warning means that one has been sighted in the area, and there is imminent danger.

Luckily for me, the Tornado Watch that affected my area expired early.

My most-worn fragrances when I was away were 4160 Tuesdays Clouds or Both Sides of Clouds. Her dog was very infatuated with all creams and lotions I put on as she tried to lick them off of me.

Today I felt better, so I finally got out to get a few plants and also plant some flower seeds. I’m trying to make a hummingbird haven in the backyard; they’ve been spotted a few times so I’m hopeful. I also got a raspberry plant; I’m extra thrilled!

Well drat, glad you are well enough to get out in the garden! And good luck with the hummingbirds. All I had to do in California is put out a fuschia, but I think it’s harder on the east coast.
