Friday scent of the day 5/17

Posted by Robin on 17 May 2024 191 Comments

It's Friday, the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, and World Baking Day. Our community project for today: do what you like with the Baking Day theme. You could wear a gourmand, or you could wear any perfume with any ingredient you like to bake with (or eat), or ?? Be as creative as you like.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

The only thing I bake with any regularity these days is granola, so I've done ingredients from my granola recipe all week. Today I'm on the almonds with Marni Rose.

Reminder: 5/24 is International Tiara Day aka Queen Victoria's birthday. Wear your perfume equivalent of a tiara.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I brought you all some coffee to go with your baked goods – wearing Legendary Fragrances Barista.

Thanks for all hugs and support yesterday. We had no power between 8 pm and 5 am, and this will probably continue for a while. But compared to what people in and near Kharkiv are experiencing now, this is nothing, of course.

I think you are very brave! I’ve never tried the perfume you are wearing today, but I love the smell of coffee even though I hardly ever drink it. The only coffee fragrance I’m familiar with is Akro Awake.
      Stay safe and fragrant!

    Hello and tgif!
I am channeling a bakery today. My left arm wearing Bois Farine wafting bread flour and puffy dough, is the workspace/kitchen. My right, in Jeux de Peau, is the storefront, with all sorts of breads fresh from the oven. I smell so good, I want to pop myself into a toaster and spread on some butter.
Can’t wait to see how delicious everyone will be today!

Happy Friday to all! I’m CP compliant with I Profumi di Fiorenze Vaniglia del Madagascar, which evokes eating a luscious creamy cakey bakey spicy vanilla dessert while sitting outside somewhere tropical surrounded by intoxicating ylang ylang flowers. Years ago, I swapped for partial bottles of this and IPDF Ambra di Nepal and they are so lovely, I cherish them and the MUA memories they bring back of those feverish early swapping days.

Feverish is the word! Remember how a new niche perfume would be constantly discussed on the fragrance board of, we would trade samples to try anything new. That was a fun time.

I had a bunch of possibilities for today but I decided to try Poets of Berlin for the blueberry and lemon. Back when I loved to bake, I often made blueberry lemon cake. I am liking PoB so far.
Had a great time with our daughter yesterday. She had a bunch of clothes to gets rid of and lots of things fit me, yay! I had nothing for summer but now I do.

I chose Omnia Ambra for the CP — it has vanilla and what I would have sworn was a cinnamon note, although it’s not listed in the fragrantica description. Maybe some combination of orange, incense and geranium? Dunno. Yesterday the conversation about cream scones led me to dig out my very ancient copy of The Vegetarian Epicure and bake buttermilk scones for the first time in probably 25 years. They turned out very well!

You smell fabulous! I’m bummed that I missed the cream scone discussion. I like them much more than the standard butter version, although they’re probably less versatile. So much easier to make, too!

I’m spraying a “vintage” bottle of Lagerfeld For Men – I’m pretty sure it’s from the 90s; the current version pales in comparison. The original has, among many delicious notes, a wonderful honeyed richness, (and I do love a good honey cake.)

Lagerfeld For Men was a revelation to me back in the mid-80s; it smelled nothing like the abrasive “masculine” fragrances most of my peers wore. Slightly sweet, warm, wild, and elegant all at once, it actually made me feel sexy when I wore it. (A fragrance first for me!) The art deco font on the bottle was gorgeous, too.

It would have been 1986 when I first smelled it. I was a MFA student in San Francisco, on a strict budget. A bottle of Lagerfeld was an indulgence I couldn’t easily afford, so on my lunch break, I’d stop at the men’s fragrance counter at the Macy’s on Union Square and spray my wrists from a tester.

Maybe it’s a bit dated now, but I love the memories it evokes, so I wear it frequently.
    Happy Friday, all!

I’m wearing Akro Dark because I love chocolate cake, though I never bake them these days.

In other news, Luxembourg is “en alerte rouge” for flooding. And the Alzette (a small river in Lux.) does seem to contain an enormous amount of water at the moment but no real disasters here so far. I’m not particularly concerned as I’m quite high on a hill and we had no problems at all during the big floods of July 2021.

No real mishaps in Luxembourg so far, but France has several flooded villages and there has been a landslide in Germany. It doesn’t seem to be quite so severe a flood as the one in 2021.
It will stop raining so heavily this evening/night. Plus there will be some sun tomorrow and Sunday, so it shouldn’t be too bad.

I’m wearing Diptyque Eau Duelle edt for vanilla which is a top favorite fragrance and ingredient for me. The green and woody notes mingle with the Bourbon vanilla from Madagascar along with a bit of pink pepper and a little bit of tea helps keep it wearable and not too sweet for me. This was another fragrance I paired with reading The Lord of the Rings books and it is easy to imagine enchanted woods while wearing it.

I love Eau Duelle, I love wearing it around the holidays, it just feels perfect for it. Such a great vanilla with the spice, I would agree that it has an enchanting element to it. I was drawn to it right away when smelling it at the Diptyque boutique. Eau Duelle, Tam Dao and Vetyverio are my three most faves from Diptyque:)

I found a little turn around spot on my route between campgrounds that, on certain days, at various times when the sun is at a specific angle and the moon has not yet risen, I MIGHT get a bar or two of service. So, from this precarious location, I’m posting to let you know I completely missed all of gourmand week which is a crime as it’s a favorite category of mine. So, rectifying it today with Café Vanille. Yum!

In non-perfume news, the boss lady who said she didn’t micromanage is a complete wack-a-do control freak. No one can stand her and at various times we have all threatened to quit, except her husband, who is resigned to his fate. He apologized to me for her because she is, in his own words, “Never wrong and will say one thing one day and then totally negate it the next day.” Yep, she sure does, and then tries to gaslight you by saying, “You must have misunderstood.” But, she told me she is a “Good Christian woman and I don’t tolerate swearing!” I guess flat out lying is okay with her Savior. I told her to avoid “misunderstandings” we can text instead of talk. That way I have a record of everything should she choose be nonsensical with me. At one point in our “Big Meeting” with the “Big Kahuna” on Tuesday, he said maybe they could get me a StarLink, and quicker than you can say “Hell no!” I smiled and told him I was quite fine as is. As they say in the south, “Lawdy!” 😂

But it’s so gorgeous here it makes up for her shoddy behavior. It has warmed considerably, sun is blasting almost everyday with temps in the mid 70’s and the nights are wonderfully cool. The hellacious wind finally stopped but occasionally in the early evening we’ll get a real whopper- a bubbling cauldron of grey clouds, curtains of rain, and gusts that bend the cottonwoods to a frightening angle. Still, all the plants are covering their naked branches, dressing slowly in spring green ruffles that shimmer and quake in the breeze. The sun casts ever changing shadows across the orangesicle color cliffs, and every so often I see an osprey bringing nesting material for the next generation, a deer bounding elegantly up a steep slope, or pronghorn moseying through tall grasses, intermittently stopping to clatter horns with a fellow antelope.

T-Rex is now known at “The Supe,” as in “Supervisor,” and rides shotgun as we make our rounds in the falling apart ram pick-up whose transmission will die at any moment as we go up a 9% grade with the engine whining and RPM’s at about 4000. It requires prayer to get to the top. Doggo has found her calling and has greeted many a camper with wags, wiggles, and whines of joy at the attention. In the evening after our last rounds she sits next to me outside with her nose all aquiver and eyes half closed in doggie ecstasy.

I have met so many nice people camping here- a retired couple showed me around their self built sprinter van and it’s a gem. Another group consisted of two middle aged brothers and an adult son who come every year for “man time” and to fish all day, every day, for a week. They brought me an entire LARGE ziplock bag full of lake trout, all filleted and skinned today. Tomorrow, we feast! I mean, come ON!

I miss all the NST news and generally don’t have a lot of time or connectivity to read the daily comments. I get one day off a week and it’s busy doing chores and driving an hour or so away to get groceries and supplies. I hope everyone is well, families are boisterous and healthy, and jobs are fulfilling (or if not, I hope they pay well to compensate!), and I already know you all smell fabulous!

    Monday they’re predicting snow! 🙃

I love hearing about your adventures, and I’m so glad you found out you her service there sometimes. The images you’ve shared on Instagram are gorgeous. That area looks so serene. It also made me think of Peter Heller books. If you haven’t read them yet, try The River and The Guide in that order. The Guide has a bit of a silly mystery at it’s heart, but it’s still worth a read, I think.

I am wearing Origins Ginger Essence this morning, ginger is one of my favorite baking ingredients.
Got hit with a big bombshell this morning, courtesy of my sister, who is registered with Ancestry.com. Apparently my mother, a woman who could charitably be called “puritanical” on a good day, had a baby in 1943 given up for adoption. So I have an 80 year old half-sister. Nobody in my family knew, my sister and I are wondering if my dad knew. Probably not.

Wow, that’s some news to absorb! I’ve been exploring my family genealogy for awhile now, and from what I’ve read in the course of my research, these ‘surprises’ happen more frequently than you’d think. Who know where this path may lead you .. .

No contact, the message was left on my sister’s Ancestry profile in 2021, and she just saw it this morning. It’s so strange, my mother was so controlling and straitlaced my whole life. I guess it was probably a reaction to her own life going off the rails for a while.

You don’t know what the story was, it might even have been an issue of rape or abuse. I know three cases in which people made contact with a lost adopted child and they were in each case happy about what happened and what they learned–they did establish contact. But here it sounds like the child (now 80) is the one looking for more information about her family and past, and that’s very challenging.

The father’s name is listed on the birth certificate along with my mother’s, so I don’t think it was rape or abuse, although I probably will never know for certain. Everyone who would know is dead now.

Well well well… just goes to show that you never know everything about someone, even your own mother. Rather fortunate that it came out so late and never caused a problem between your parents (assuming dad didn’t know). There were several women on both sides of my family who fell pregnant before being married, but they all married the fathers (as far as we know).

I don’t bake much these days, so I’m expanding today’s cp to include my favorite summer flavor for edibles and drinkables, 🍋! And because I love gourmand scents, I’ve chosen DKNY Sweet Delicious Creamy Meringue for my SOTD. Yum! The floral notes of frangipani, passion flower and freesia add some soft floral undertones to the basic lemony custard scent and, yes, I don’t mind at all smelling like lemon meringue 🥧. Besides the pie, I love all sorts of lemon cookies, frozen lemon Italian ice, fish with lemon sauce, lemon tea, lemonade and my favorite summer beer, Summer Shandy. 🍺. It’s a beautiful, warm 🌞 day here today, and my lemon scent beautifully echoes the day.

Looking ahead to the weekend, we have warm, 🌞weather forecast all weekend, a community plant sale and our museum’s living history salute to the 80th anniversary of D-Day, tomorrow, and a belated Mother’s Day brunch with my son and family on Sunday. Hope you all have something special to look forward to this weekend! 🪻🌷🌹

Yes, I’ve now seen videos on TV (at a bar where I went for lunch, since my TV service is out), with aerial views of a big swatch of downed power lines in the northwest part of town. That is going to take major repair efforts. For some reason my little townhome complex was lucky and all our lights stayed on after some flickering, whereas both down the street and across the street, they went off and are still off today.

Finishing off the cp with CdG Sticky Cake. It smells so good and I should wear it more often (the mantra around these parts). I’ve enjoyed smelling delicious so much that I might continue with gourmands this weekend. Since happy888cat mentioned Jeux de Peau, that might be tomorrow’s SOTD. It’ll be cooler and rainy so I think it should work perfectly.

Tonight we’re considering going to a live podcast recording with Paul Giamatti, the actor. I only found out about this yesterday! Thank goodness I follow Powell’s Books on Instagram because they posted about Paul and his podcast co-host, Stephen Asma, a philosophy professor and author, visiting the store yesterday morning. The podcast is called Chinwag, and they discuss all kinds of topics of the unknown like aliens, science fiction, mythology, the occult, spirituality, religion, etc. etc. I started an episode yesterday, and it seems like it’s a fun podcast. I really like Paul Giamatti and think it would be great pretty cool to see him live in a small venue that’s walking distance from me.

      That would be so cool!

True story – my high school friend Jim Taylor co-wrote Sideways. Before they started filming, I was talking to him at his wedding reception and I said, “You should cast Paul Giamatti in your next film.” He said, “We are!” He added that wineries were sending cases and cases of wine in the hopes they would mention them in their film.

I decided not to go to the live event tonight though. I did the most tedious work today for a deadline, and I just want to pick up some takeout and veg on the couch. I did listen to a couple episodes of his podcast, and I might keep up with it.

So, I rummaged through more samples and found DSH Vanilla Cookie Dough, yay! I may have to change my thinking about gourmand scents and come over to the sweet side! I’m sampling the Frederic Malle Acne Studios scent. Verdict: it’s more interesting than I thought it would be. Aldehydes and a strong peach note along with the laundry musk smell. It’s fairly strong and somehow a bit nostalgic for me. Too bad the price is completely bonkers.

Joining the CP in Iris Torrefie. It seemed better for today’s warm, muggy weather than Iris Ganache. I find IT to be like a nice coffee shop where you also smell tea and sweet and savory baked items. At one point today, I had a brief flashback to OG White Linen! I think it is that something smokey. Just heard news of bad storms in Houston – hope our NST’ers in Texas are safe! Our area is saturated with rain, but there were no storms.

I’m testing a sample of Jorum Paradisi today because I’ve been on a rhubarb kick. This is a great fresh, green scent. A really well done balance between tart citrus/rhubarb and a bitter bite of green leaves and stems. I get cucumber, but thankfully ZERO dill. Comparing it to Aedes Signature — the AS has a more complexity and a stronger floral aspect. I can see how Paradisi can seem reminiscent of AS (per the fragrantica comments), but side by side they are very different to my nose.

Tea today is Harney & Son’s Holiday, spiced up with some whole cloves. The lilac and honeysuckle in my yard are peaking and they smell so good. I have a ton of weeds to pull this weekend, but I won’t mind so much with those flowers wafting.

News Flash: I just watched Persolaise’s interview with Michael Edwards and he said that he just saw Antonia Bellanca and that she told him she is bringing Antonia’s Flowers back!

Doing vanilla for the baking theme CP. I spritzed from a travel spray of Cocoa Pink Triple Vanilla Dream but it seemed too weak so added Obvious Un Vanille, which is more of a dry or straight ahead vanilla than sweet. I can still smell it 12+ hours later.

Still looking for the perfect gourmand vanilla but I tend to veer off into the white floral vanilla as well. I think there are so many choices. Maybe 2025. . .

Heard about the nasty weather in Houston on the news this morning. I hope that the Houston contingent of NSTers are OK.

Laundry day for me today. I did 4 loads of “special” stuff that can’t be washed in a normal load. Either it shouldn’t have fabric softener used, or it bleeds, etc.

Robin, I will try my best to send you some summer-y weather. It was 85 here today in northern Colorado. 🌞🌞🌞

SOTD = back in Prada Candy and Josie Maran Vanilla Vibezzz body butter on my shins. It’s been a long time since I have come across a perfume and lotion combination I have enjoyed as much as this one. Vanilla, caramel, a hint of juniper, and benzoin = delicious!

Thanks for mentioning us. I posted above, I am fine, and so is nancyleandros. We checked in with one another. I’m not sure about coumarin, but hope so. We appreciate the good thoughts.

So glad you found a combination you enjoy, sometimes being a little adventurous is good.
