Wednesday scent of the day 5/15

Posted by Robin on 15 May 2024 131 Comments

It's Wednesday, National Chocolate Chip Day, International Day of Families and Peace Officers Memorial Day. Birthdays: Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, L. Frank Baum, Katherine Anne Porter, Richard Avedon, Jasper Johns. RIP Alice Munro. What fragrance are you wearing?

The only thing I bake with any regularity these days is granola, so I'm doing ingredients from my granola recipe this week. Today: nutmeg, in Le Labo Bergamote 22.

Reminder: 5/17 is World Baking Day. Do what you like with the theme. You could wear a gourmand, or you could wear any perfume with any ingredient you like to bake with (or eat), or ?? Be as creative as you like.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Cool eye makeup, bird. And pretty colors.

Today’s weather is cool and sunny/partly cloudy, so I wanted to wear something that was sweet and fresh at the same time. I went with Sylvaine Delacourte Virgile – airy vanilla and aromatic notes (clary sage, rosemary). It smells bright and uplifting, and I think I earned some CP points for vanilla.

Baking can be savory as well as sweet, so I think you get points for the rosemary, too.

Using my sample of Heaven Can wait, and wondering which Caron it’s based on 🙂 According to Persolaise, it’s not Poivre-and he heard that from Frederic Malle himself. I believe it’s Coup de Fouet. It’s really nice-first time I wore it I sprayed it really close to the skin and didn’t care for the effect as much. This time I applied one spritz as a mist, and I’m enjoying the effect. Hope there’s some sun in everyone’s day today-bit of Vitamin D should be awesome!

Wearing Diptyque L’Eau Papier, thanks to a generous NSTer. I have been using this sample a lot since I received it. Few drops left. It is a very nice, subtle, comforting scent. I might consider a full bottle in the future.

Grey, rainy day here. We have a retirement lunch for one of our coworkers today. Great human being and an amazing colleague. He will be missed!
    Happy Wednesday! 🌻

When my daughter was still at home, I often baked hot milk cake, where you add scalded milk and melted butter to the dry ingredients. Her friends loved it. So in honor of milk, I’m wearing Zoologist Cow today, just a spritz because I have a haircut, then coffee within a friend.

I am back from my trip to Italy. I think i overdid it with perfumes and pasta.
Since we had to cancel our trip in April because of health issues, we had vouchers and got last minute tickets which we never do.
I am wearing one of the perfumes i got in Verona, Viole Nere. Verona was my favourite of the cities we visited, had lots of small perfume shops with amazing choices. We stayed at Abano Terme which is a town with thermal water spas, baths etc , rented a car and visited several cities around that area.

Oh, sounds wonderful! The last time I was in Verona I was a broke university student on spring break, so I didn’t seek out perfumes. But…I’m thinking about where we’re going on fall break in October, and Italy’s in the consideration set. Maybe we should stop in Verona.

Thanks! I’ve been to Bologna and Venice, but Ockeghem Teen hasn’t been to that part of Italy yet, so it’s high on the list. I’d also like to spend more time exploring the area in more depth, and maybe also getting to Croatia.

But…Morocco is also on the list…so much travel planning to do!

I’m glad your trip was wonderful!

      Oh Italy! Dreamy sigh.
I’ve not been to Verona, but Fair Verona is one of my faves from Strange Invisible Perfumes, a local L.A. indie botanical perfumer. I don’t have any at the moment, alas, but my scent of the day is Mythique by Parfums Delrae thanks to a lovely and generous swapper here. I tried samples from this line years ago, but for some reason they left little impression. Maybe because I’m not usually a floral gal. But Mythique is sooo ethereal and gorgeous and it’s giving me an itch to acquire all the Delrae Roth fragrances. They are d/c and HTF, so wish me luck.

On the road and working with a bag of samples. Today I’m in Bois 1920 Sutra Ylang, a big, luscious, masculine-leaning floral oriental. Sort of wish I’d bought a bottle way back when — it’s my favourite of all of theirs I’ve smelled.

What an adorable bird! The CP reminded me to call the appliance guy to look at our oven and dishwasher. An oven element burned out, and I pivoted to stove-top meals while we thought over whether to get a new one or have this 60 year old one repaired. Meanwhile, our dishwasher (20yo) is having trouble. I tried cleaning it but we’ll have it looked at too. I am so used to everything in our old house that I admit I don’t want change. Also, I am not a fan of maxed-out new features that I know I won’t use. Cranky me – but I do like many new things and experiences, promise! SotD Estee (uh-oh, back on vintage stuff). An ’80’s version, it has a wonderful honied carnation and iris heart that lasts and lasts. Add that to spicy rose and oakmoss and you have a true top-five scent for me.

I’m like you with appliances…the more manual and simpler the better, give me dials over touch buttons etc. Half the time when I’m cleaning/wiping down the panel of the stove or dishwasher I seem to reset some program , or the clock, and it’s such a drag trying to fix it. Good luck.

Oy about the appliances! I hope you end up with the ones you need without much trouble. My last big appliance was the all manual dial air-fryer, bought and used November 2021. (We won’t count the coffee makers and other “smaller” appliances.)

I don’t like change in my little old house either and I’m not interested in appliances that are complicated. I was at a good friend’s house recently and she had me sit in her recliner, where I found out I needed a remote for the chair, to get the feet/back etc adjusted properly. I ended up upside down and almost fell out completely! Give me just a regular chair lol.

Such a cool wee bird. We get a lot of them around here and they’re really sparky. If you put out sugar water , 10-20 will pretty much turn up straightaway out of nowhere and start feeding. When you watch them in trees feeding ( you usually hear them before seeing them as they are small, like mice) they seem to start from the top and then parkour downwards from branch to branch. They came here from Australia in the early 1800s ( blown on the wind). Their Maori name Tauhou means new arrival/ stranger. Bird call link:

I thought about wearing “Fire At Will” this morning, for its vanilla/brown sugar notes, but opted out of the kitchen, so to speak.

I’m enjoying “Beach Hut (Woman)” from Amouage. I don’t know why they bothered with the “woman” designation – there’s nothing traditionally feminine about it, to my nose, anyway. Fresh, with slightly bitter greens, spicy, and woody, it keeps surprising me the longer it’s on my skin. “Beachy,” but not like a sunscreen – more like sea salt/ocean water on the skin.

Maybe they’re finally moving away from it – I don’t think the recent ones like Guidance, Purpose, Lineage, etc. have a gender attached. But, yeah, they’ve held on to the practice a long time.

Wax eyes are lovely, we see quite a few of them.
I’m continuing with my theme of baking spices, and I’m wearing SL’s Rousse for the cinnamon.

Today I am wearing Ormond Jayne Ta’if because I felt like it was a pretty rose day. I am not sure if it’s CP-worthy or not, I guess it would depend on whether one were to bake something (a pastry perhaps?) with a bit of a rosewater flavor. If so I would happily eat it!

After a very late night and a very long morning sleep-in, and some quite complicated dreams, I am getting a late start to my day. But my only real project for the day is to unbox and set up my new printer. It’s supposed to be simple but we shall see. Yes, another first world problem, like those of you with appliance issues. Speaking of which, when I first moved into my house (year 2000, and with the ex-husband), there was a manual microwave, i.e., one with a dial to set the time. Analog not digital. And it was still working! I know the house was built in 1983. It did give up the ghost not long after. And probably it wasn’t the safest thing to use but so far so good….

Good luck with your new printer set up. I know they’re supposed to be “plug and play” but sometimes it just doesn’t happen.

I’m in one of my most favorite gourmand perfumes, a long time have too, which is Tarte au Citron by Laura Mercier. It makes me want to eat my arm lol. It’s the perfect balance of citrus and sugary notes, and I cherish my bottle.

From comments yesterday, it sounds like I need to be thankful that the mailperson picks up my outgoing mail. I’ll have to do a little research though …

For those who like to indulge in McDonald’s, rejoice! For about a month starting June 27, there’s a meal deal happening. For $5, you get either a hamburger or chicken sandwich, small fries, soda and 4-piece nuggets. I won’t admit to my fast food preferences 😇.

    That little bird is adorable!

Got an interesting phone call from the rental office today. It seems that the roofers had installed roof vents incorrectly when they were replacing the shingles on all the apartment buildings in my complex. Oh joy. So someone will be here tomorrow to fix that. Just have to make sure that I clear out the spare closet and move stuff in the bathrooms so things don’t get dirty/dusty.

SOTD = Prada Candy, from a very new sample in The Sample Stash. Still smells good to me.

That’s too bad about the replacement shingles. One would think that a commercial contractor would be more careful with choosing the right material!

The shingles are OK, thank God. It’s just the vents that are buggered up. Rooves require at least 2 kinds of vents: one for air circulation in the attic space, and then one for bathroom ventilation. IDK if the wrong ones were used, or the installation was not right. Dunno *how* you could put a vent in the wrong way. 🤷‍♀️

Yeah, you think that contractors and their crews would know this stuff.

4 more hours until 2 days off.
I’m wearing TF Orchid Soliel. It’s the perfect weather for it, sunny but not too hot. This perfume gets sickly smelling in high heat and humidity.
If you are GenX or older, I recommend the Jerry Seinfeld movie Unfrosted on Netflix. It’s funny and has a lot of references from the 60’s.. most aren’t factual but it’s fun.

Stopping by late today. I had a massage and didn’t wear perfume leading up to it. He uses a little peppermint oil so I smell of peppermint, certainly a baking ingredient, especially at Christmas time. On the way home, I bought one tomato plant, I have not had much luck growing them after the first two years. The African violet died, it had been looking horrible the past couple of weeks, but left behind a few baby leaves, so I will try to encourage them to take hold. It’s difficult when you have a black thumb to grow anything.

Are you trying to grow tomatoes in the same spot? That could be part of the reason they aren’t thriving for you.

No, they have been in different spots. I wondered, because I chose heirloom varieties, if they were more temperamental than hybrids, so I bought a hybrid today.

I have heard that heirlooms can be more difficult to grow. But I haven’t had any personal experience with heirloom tomatoes.

I did find that cherry tomatoes are easier to grow than full sized ones.

I’ve heard that if you cut the bottom of the African violet plant, it can encourage growth.

Just remove the plant from the pot and cut the bottom 1/2 inch (or so); then just put it back in the pot and give it a good watering. This is supposed to stimulate the roots.

I’d probably add a bit of potting soil back in the bottom of the pot to bring the plant back to the original level.

    Post and Run!

    Perfume News:
BV today, and lasted all day. First day off and I did nothing but lay around and read. An absolute delight!

    Book News:
I finished Days Without End by Sebastian Barry. Another new author to love, so I’ve several more planned. The words leap from the page with a WOOSH, consuming you like a fire that’s suddenly had gasoline poured on it. Not for the faint of heart as it travels through the starvation of the Potato Famine, to the the brutality of the Indian Wars, slicing through the Civil War like a hot knife cauterizing a wound. The language it stunning. I read it in one day it was so engrossing.
