Friday scent of the day 5/10

Posted by Robin on 10 May 2024 184 Comments

Happy Friday and happy International Day of Argania! (Also, National Shrimp Day, plus some birthdays: Tonita Peña, Fred Astaire, David O. Selznick, Maybelle Carter, Arthur Alexander, Donovan, Miuccia Prada, Sid Vicious, Bono.) Our community project for today: we're off to Morocco! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in Morocco, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to Morocco, or that features a local ingredient, or ?

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Me: Parfum d’Empire Azemour Les Orangers, the answer to a goodly percentage of community projects.

Reminder: 5/17 is World Baking Day. Do what you like with the theme. You could wear a gourmand, or you could wear any perfume with any ingredient you like to bake with (or eat), or ?? Be as creative as you like.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Robin, love the photo today!
Visiting the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca was a profound experience for me. Stepping inside, I felt a shift in perspective. The mosque’s grandeur and serenity left me in awe, and I emerged feeling transformed. My love for Morocco only grew stronger in that moment.

Me too! My dream is south of Spain and cross into Morocco from there, since I have been to Marrakech and Casablanca but not Tangier etc etc
Also, would love to visit Tunisia

    Hello and tgif!
I’m off to a Moroccan bazaar with Aesop Marrakech Intense.
Making spaghetti bolognese today and that’s one of my doggo’s favourite dinner (Her share is dog-friendly! No onion/garlic, salt, spices etc.). She’ll be barking and begging from the moment I start chopping the veggies and I am defenseless against her round puppy dog eyes!

I love that you are making a special treat for your dog. 🙂 Lucky girl! Mine got a few bites of pie dough last night while I was baking. She climbs up my leg begging.

Mine climbs too! She will also try to climb up the countertop to “look”. I can 200% confirm, labradors LOVE food.

Fortunately my Papillon is far too short to reach the countertop. She loves food too – it’s a constant battle to control her weight.

And we are having late winter…it was 53 and rain all day. Gave blood on Wednesday and hope that is why the rainy weather really is making me drag…I’m exhausted for no other reason I can think of.

I went to Fragrantica and searched for rose and sandalwood. One of the perfumes listed is Chanel Coco, which has it all – rose! sandalwood! orange blossom! spices! and probably more. I had no idea that peach is listed as a note for Coco, I know we had a peach CP and I could have used it. Anyway, obviously, Coco is my sotd. I’m home today, tackling a laundry mountain range, might as well smell classy in clouds of Coco.

I have had many forms of Coco over the years and the edt remains my favorite. I have a full bottle of vintage edt that will last me for ages.

I love them all, though perhaps the parfum last, mostly because of how quiet it is. I adore the richness of the rose in the vintage EdP.

Tropical scents today – Aerin Hibiscus Palm, a dab of Marissa Zappas The Sun Card (sample), and Giardini di Toscana BoraBora.

    My hot take:
    Hibiscus Palm – love it
The Sun Card – really intrigued
BoraBora – just about too creamy for me

    Hello all!

El Attarine again today. I don’t wear it often but it’s been nice to enjoy it back to back for a few days. Luca Turin said it wasn’t a fragrance to buy fabric softener in, but can confirm it works for days full of studying, and is currently great company for dropping off Jicky at the vet.

My Mercari order came: a 90% full bottle of DelRae Bois de Paradis for only $65. It took years, but it never hurts to be patient. Fantastic stuff. I would trade half a dozen of the newer niche lines for Parfums DelRae to return. 🙁

    Have a great day everyone!

          • Coumarin says:
            10 May 2024 at 4:31 pm

Ah, looking forward to it! I’ll have to think up some jewels to bring along too. I now have Eau Illuminee, Wit, BdP, Mythique (actually two partials), and Emotionelle. I have a little sample of Debut, though I remember Robin once saying her bottle went off, so I haven’t used it.

I’ve really started to love melon, and PdT was a good sub for Emotionelle for awhile. Shame it’s even too much now for you. If you think about swapping your little bottle, maybe I can find something of mine worth trading for!

Yes, very. I have seen a few bottles pop up here and there, but for at least five times the price. I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting to ever have a bottle.

Wit is really lovely as well, but I think of all of them (that I’ve tried) I think you could find something close to it. I’ll have to think on what, though.

I’ll be off doing very sophisticated and elegant things today- like wacking some weeds, doing burpees under duress to access the money in the iron ranger, and sweeping down a bunch of spider webs and dead bugs from the bathroom rafters. Fun times! 🤣

If you enjoy that candle half as much as I do, it’s a total win! So happy you got one, let me know how you like it.

Yes, I’m waiting to get into my area. Right now I’m still in a big campground where there is service. The season officially starts Sunday but because of snow and other inclement weather we haven’t been able to get into those remote campgrounds to work much. The campgrounds are at higher elevation than here and many still have snow and mud on the ground and 4WD is needed in those areas until the snow completely melts and the roads (such as they are) dry up. We are basically trying to get many, many things organized- from signage to tracking down and repairing (if necessary) lawn mowers, weed eaters, stock up on cleaning products, make sure the boats are up and running, trucks and boats have to be serviced, ad infinitum. Equipment was left in a pretty big mess from last season, so it’s been a treasure hunt trying to find what we need and get organized. There is a total 12 campgrounds for our group and they are very far flung. No one will have service once they get into their campground because they’re so remote. So, before we get where we need to be, everyone is working to get things running. We are still waiting for one person to show up. It’s a big production…😅

Lutens Fleur d’Oranger for me today as it’s a note common to both Morocco and Los Angeles and the orange tree blossoms in my backyard intoxicate me each spring (they’re just about done now). I was also pondering wearing others by Lutens. Since Morocco is his muse they’d all work, right? It’s been ages since I’ve worn FdO and I’m always impressed anew by its potency. Orange flowers are often a topnote, but this one lasts through to the drydown. Anyway, once the sun goes down I’ll pull out the last dregs of my L’ADDM bottle and that will be my Morocco adventure, thx for a fun CP, Robin.

Chergui, a wind “which blows on the southernmost part of Morocco, a hot and dry wind coming from the Sahara Desert”. Suprised I don’t see any twins yet.

A few days ago, I started the last coding course in my 4-course program. This one is about React, and oh boy it feels like a jump in difficulty. I have become pretty comfortable with vanilla HTML and CSS (although there are many things I don’t know about them either), but React seems a completely different system. But I am getting the hang of the fundamentals, so it should get easier, I hope.

    https://sis.modernamuseet.se/objects/2197/paysage-marocain-acanthes

I had a vague memory from art history that Delacroix spent a long time sketching in Morocco, and I wondered who else ( I used to have a nice Paul Klee poster from Tunisia) and landed on Henri Matisse who made two journeys, in 1912 and 1913 ( the works were exhibited in a MOMA show in 1990, (and includes the big The Moroccans painting which is in their collection). He had a Russian patron so a lot of these Moroccan works are now in the Pushkin Museum collection. There’s a nice one called Periwinkles, another of a woman called Zorah ( Wikipedia them).
It rained when he first arrived in 1912 so he did a lot of painting from his hotel room window, lots of “views” or flowers in vases. I like the lushness of this work, the depth of colour…so vivid, almost like landscape after a downpour. Matching with Interlude.

I’m also joining the CP in Azemour this morning, mostly because it’s too warm for my first choice, Le Maroc pour Elle.

When I went to Morocco, I joined a culinary tour. Among the clients were two young women from Los Angeles, who seemed very much more interested in taking selfies, posting on Facebook, and talking to each other than listening to our guest lecturers. When we went to the open air market, they came back to the van carrying plastic bags stuffed full of olives. They had each bought 2 kilos, not knowing that a kilo was 2.2 lbs (and probably being taken advantage of by the olive sellers, but still…) I know that they didn’t know the weight of a kilo because I heard them looking it up on their phones. Every time I see an olive I think of them.

It’s been a wonderful fragrance week for me! The lilacs just outside our bedroom deck are in full bloom, and the weather has been conducive to opening windows and doors letting their fragrance gently waft thru the house. And I’ve been in harmony all week wearing some of my favorite lilac scents – the original YR Pur Desir de Lilas, Pacifica French Lilac, Alfred Sung Sha, Annie Oakley Morning Dew, and Gucci Guilty amongst others. Been lovin’ it all week. ❤️

But I’m taking a break from lilac for today’s cp. When I think of Morocco, I think ‘spice’ and I know its unique geography includes mountains, desert and seashore. So my hand automatically reached for Dior Dune for my SOTD which, to me, evokes all of those: it’s salty, sandy, a bit spicy, and somehow woody, earthy and mossy, all at the same time. One of my favorites!❤️

Looking forward to a native plant sale later today, our first trip to the ballpark tomorrow, and, of course, Mother’s Day on Sunday! Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead and a special day for all those who have ‘mothered,’ human babies and fur and feathered babies as well!💐

It’s a cold Saturday morning here, we need to go to the supermarket, but I’d much prefer not to leave the house. I’d been thinking of Ouarzazate, but I think spicy and warming is the way to go, and I’ll wear Tiger By Her Side. It’s more suitable for the CP than I realised – Fragrantica tells me that its notes include Moroccan rose.

I went with the glorious Dilettante by Hiram Green since it really captures the beauty and intensity of the orange tree and orange blossom. Yesterday, inspired by discussion here this week, I wore El Attarine for the first time in probably 10 years from my little decant that is still holding up well after all these years. It was lovely! But quiet. So I think I’ll spray more next time.

Yes, but I do think it’s so dependent on the type of bottle a decant is housed in. I have many decants older than that that still smell great. Thank goodness because I acquired a lot of decants in MUA swaps! Anyway, I’m also glad El Attarine has been well-preserved.

Maybe I’ll get lucky and see the Northern Lights tonight. There’s a huge solar storm occurring right now, and the Aurorae are much further south than usual.

I’ve heard about “Healing Touch” where practitioners transmit energy to help people find harmony and healing. I am not an HT practitioner, but you have just inspired me to start my own practice, “Healing Spritz.”

Judging by your symptoms (Friday frustrations), I am going to spritz Sarrasins, which I know to be one of your favorites. I hope it helps💕

Believe it or not, I think your “Healing Spritz” may have worked a bit of magick this evening! A package that was going to be delayed until Monday showed up a few minutes after you posted. ✨

I now have my Leather Jardin!

I am copying ringthing in Coco. I honestly can never go wrong with it.
When I saw the theme was Morocco, my first thought was the episode of Absolutely Fabulous when they went. ( I am obviously very well traveled. Lol)
I could only find a brief clip to share, but thought better of it. I almost forgot how funny those two are.

That is the truest statement ever, “I can never go wrong with Coco.”
      You smell wonderful!

Smelling great in Coco today! It was a little too warm for it out here, though.

OMG I forgot that episode! So deliciously ridiculous, I should see if I can find a functioning dvd player in this house and watch it again.

Sampled Tanger today which is a cheerful floral that is nice but not full bottle worthy
