Wednesday scent of the day 5/8

Posted by Robin on 8 May 2024 164 Comments

It's Hump Day, World Red Cross Day, and Iris Day. Happy 98th to Sir David Frederick Attenborough! (And happy birthday to my little sister, who is not quite as old as Sir David Attenborough, but is getting there.) What fragrance are you wearing?

More points for me in Ormonde Jayne Tanger.

Reminder: 5/10 is the International Day of Argania, so we're off to Morocco! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in Morocco, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to Morocco, or that features a local ingredient, or ?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Happy birthday to your little sister, Robin! 🎂

Lavishly sprayed in TDC Bois d’Iris, thanks to a very generous NSTer!

Coffee with a dash of saffron and a splash of rose water.
    Happy Wednesday! ☕️

Thanks to your mentions of rose water, I have been using it in place of vanilla extract in tapioca pudding. It’s yummy! 😋

I love rose or lavender water on tapioca or rice pudding. I also add a dash or cardamom or saffron. Delicious!

My friend brought me some tonka beans that I like to grate into my chia pudding, or really any baked good in place of vanilla.

    Hello.
Thank you all so much for your kind words yesterday. They mean a lot to me. Thank you.❤️
Happy birthday to Robin’s little sister!
    Sotd is Dior Joy Intense.
Kris, I will wear that pin with pride! I am so glad you love it! 😀
Just made myself a mug of Kopi ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopi_(drink) ) from beans I brought back from Malaysia. The drink is pitch black but is absolutely delicious with condensed milk. The beans are roasted with sugar so there is a unique, caramelly aroma to it.

My husband is in Jakarta and has been raving about the coffee. I remember Balinese coffee from the 1970s which was so finely ground and sweet chocolate,y, almost like patchouli scented coffee. He might bring some back, hopefully.

I’m in La Chasse body wash, and one discreet spritz of Histoires d’Oranger, both from L’artisan. I’m finding it much harder to find this line in Canada, and cannot believe how much even the discounters are charging for this line now. I think the Histoires is a good replacement if you liked Annick Goutal’s Neroli scent.

What a beautiful blue street, Robin! And happy birthday to your sister!

I am in Hermes 24 Faubourg. It has the following Moroccan notes: orange, orange blossom, iris and jasmine.

This morning was noisy. Again, nothing, thankfully, dropped on my town, but we heard air defense working, which was unnerving.

This morning I’m in Thé Pour un Été, which is well-suited for this week’s CP in that it has notes of mint, lemon, and jasmine in addition to its lovely tea notes. Our weather is ramping up to summerlike — highs in the 80s starting tomorrow or Friday. Today is supposed to be high 60s, which I like a bit better. Time to get the patio umbrella cleaned off and set up!

I’m reading Aileen Ward’s Keats…managed to find it in the university library as it’s not in the public library, or any second hand shops. Off-site stack so a special request. Such a great read. Thanks for the tip. Will hunt down Sly next.
I have Interlude ( woman) which is a real confusion of notes, a shape shifter that is somehow puzzling and intriguing in equal measure. Bit of a love/ hate scent.

I’m so glad you’re enjoying it! I always loved Keats, but Ward’s book made me appreciate him on a whole other level. When a biographer can do that, it’s a really special gift.

Sly’s tale is, of course, quite different(!) I actually saw him in concert back in 1984 at a little club in Poughkeepsie, long after he’d lost the original members of the Family Stone. He hadn’t been on the charts in years, and his reputation was in tatters – he was two hours late, which was typical of him, completely strung out, and an absolute mess. But when he finally appeared and
sat down at the piano to bang out the opening chords of “Hot Fun In The Summertime,” the place went insane with joy. He kept leaving the stage to take more drugs, returning a little shakier each time. (You could tell his band had lost all patience with him.) But while he played, he came alive; I’ve never seen a crowd having more fun. The guy had unbelievable talent and charisma.

I agree – Interlude (Woman) is pretty weird, yet very compelling. It’s taken me a couple of years to love it. The (Man) versions are great, and I love the Black Iris one, as well. I can see them as love/hate fragrances, for sure, but I always appreciate the excitement of divisive perfumes.😊

The concert sounds incredible. Looking forward to the book. Tracy Thorn of Everything But the Girl is a really good writer. I wasn’t a fan of their music but her book about song writing/ performing is wonderful, Naked at the Albert Hall. Worth reading.

Have to jump in on the music bios. Just finished Elton John’s ME. Nope, was never a fan (I actually like his music in that way that some music is part of the soundtrack of your life no matter what). I picked it up—well ordered the audio version from my local library after catching the second half of him and Bernie Taupin getting some lifetime award at the Kennedy Center, because I was curious. The book is no trenchant analysis of class wars in Britain in the 50s or tell all of love fests in the 60s, or even deeply confessional (but there is anger at the parents, drugs, and sex, so some prurient satisfaction) —but I laughed out loud every few pages, and am still thinking about the book days later.

I’m over this wind…holy cow it hasn’t stopped for three days! This can’t be normal..? 37F but the wind makes it a “feels like” balmy 27F. I think I’m stuck in some alternate universe. Poor Baby T-Rex had to be gently booted outside this morning, all bundled up in her fleece and a puffer on top of that. As soon as she was done, she jumped back into bed and under the covers not to be seen again until I rattled some kibble into her dish. Not to be outdone by the doggo’s winter wardrobe, I bear a striking resemblance to Kenny from South Park. I just hope I don’t end up getting killed off! For the time being, I’ve got my nose just where it belongs, huffing some lovely perfume. ☺️

I’m wearing Profvmvm Ambra Avrea which has incense, so still CP compliant. Aside from that I chose it because it lights a smoldering fire in my heart, which I hope warms me up enough to get moving and do something useful today.

    Happy Hump Day!

Took me at least a year to save up money to get a full bottle. It’s one of those perfumes that I have 2 back up bottles and the travel spray. I hope Amouage never discontinues this beauty.

I looked up Moroccan bindings yesterday and then wound my way through various Moroccan leather tidbits …fine, supple goatskin used not only for book bindings ( it is smooth and takes gilding and colour dyes well) but also gloves, purses, wallets. So pairing with Daim Blond.
Exciting day as a parcel of samples from Gaynor arrived unexpectedly in the post ( snuck through the post would be more accurate ) . So many riches . I’ve already tried SL Ecrin de Fumee and love it. The pleasure and pain of samples is real!

Bought a full bottle of Akro Bake, and ordered a half dozen samples along with it. Trying Peregrina by Thameen this morning. I was expecting more sharp, green quality, but this is round, sweet and floral. I just looked at the notes and it has amber and mhyrr, which is a combo I love. The extra sweetness from caramel takes it into a gooier direction, which isnt my favorite in spring/summer. I will try again in cooler months and see what I think.

It’s one of my best friend’s birthdays as well, though unfortunately he lives too far away for me to celebrate with him.

Your well-wishes worked everyone! I am officially done with physics. I celebrated by sleeping in but I’m off to study now.

I think it came out right before you could get the bell jars everywhere, and then they were crazy expensive. So I don’t blame you. I can always make a decant if you need some!

That is so sweet, but no…I am trying really hard not to accrue more decants. I have too many, can’t keep track of them, many evaporate before I can use them up. So I am accepting the fact that it does not make sense to keep every fragrance I love “in stock”. But thanks so much for the offer!

Hi all, I’m wearing one of the free samples I got a few months back for the Mind Games line, since it sort of fits our CP: It’s called As-Suli’s Diamond. It’s quite an intriguing combination of notes including fig, orange, broom, ylang ylang, incense, and various woody notes. The creator is Annick Menardo. I don’t care for the excessive PR/designs/costs of this line of perfumes, and would not buy one, but it’s fun to try them. I have no idea what the relevant application is to chess. Too bad!

Did anyone else watch all the Met Gala coverage? Usually I enjoy the weird fashions and their relevance (or lack thereof) to the theme, but this year I was only struck by the degrees of excess and waste. And why on earth would Zendaya need TWO dresses? Haven’t these people heard anything about the major problems of fast fashion and sustainability issues? And I’m more than disappointed by the rude treatment of the Korean boy band members.

She wore two dresses on the red carpet and then a third once inside ( a low cut cream dress). I realised I wasn’t the target audience when I found my mind wandering to carbon footprints ( private jets etc etc. ) and, like you, a grim display of competitive excess. I guess the plus is the 17 million raised for the Met. Seemed pretty joyless and pointless.

    I’m in Glossier You.
Today is my Friday and I’m feeling quite giddy about it. Tomorrow I will travel up to the twin cities and visit with my favorite auntie just returned from Arizona, stay overnight with my cousin and then collect my grad girl from uni. Can’t wait to see all of them!🤩 My daughter and I will take the Mississippi River road home for an overnight in what is now both of our Alma maters. A girls night of dinner then probably hanging out in our hotel room in our jammies eating ice cream and watching tv.😊

I am loving the cp this week. I love thinking about Morocco all the time.

I feel like I want to re-read Under the Sheltering Sky.

Lines from that book regarding Morocco is:

“He did not think of himself as a tourist; he was a traveler. The difference is partly one of time, he would explain. Whereas the tourist generally hurries back home at the end of a few weeks or months, the traveler, belonging no more to one place than to the next, moves slowly, over periods of years, from one part of the earth to another.”

“The landscape of the desert is constantly changing. It is a timeless place where one feels small yet strangely uplifted by the vastness and beauty of the surroundings.”

I found my little decant of Lann-Ael that is at least 15 years old. It’s a dram size screw top bottle and the scent smells fresh and I don’t see any evaporation beyond normal use. While I was shuffling things around in my perfume cabinet today, I found a handful of dried up decants and samples to toss, glad the Lann-Ael survived, it smells so good. French Froot Loops.

Chilly day here, but with blue skies and puffy white clouds a la Bob Ross. The wind has blown itself out to somewhere else. Teflon kitty has been more of a lapcat than usual due to the cooler temps.

I’m getting slightly apprehensive with my upcoming vacation. The cruise itself is fine but the getting there part is a little concerning as it will be the first time since March 2020 that I will be taking a plane to go somewhere. I’ll have to decide my own safety protocols as I don’t think any airlines have anything out anymore. I’ll ask tomorrow but if you are still reading, please let me know how you did with your most recent travels. Thanks.

No one social distances anymore, boarding and deplaning are the usual mob scene. There are more masks in evidence than before the pandemic and more people wipe down the seat and the meal tray but those are the only differences I’ve noticed.

Are you up to date with your COVID vaccine? I haven’t flown since the pandemic, but have travelled across the country by car and stayed at lots of hotels. I have not been wearing a mask for those trips. However, I would maybe mask on an airplane. It’s pretty close quarters and you don’t know the people and if they have been ill. Just my opinion.

To add my two cents: most hospitals are not requiring staff to mask unless the person/patient is in airborne or droplet isolation for a confirmed diagnosis of Covid, TB, encephalitis, and all the other usual suspects. ER admits are not even getting tested anymore unless they present with respiratory symptoms and then they get the usual swabs- Covid/RSV/Influenza etc. Honestly, if you’re not immunocompromised and have had the first set of vaccines and booster I wouldn’t worry. We will all get it eventually, which is not necessarily bad thing because it’s no longer KILLING people. If you have health issues, consult your MD for direction. You may get sick when you travel. That’s nothing new. You’re being exposed to a whole host of new bugs not in your current environment. So, if you’re setting the bar at guaranteed zero transmission of any bug that can make you feel bad, it’s just not realistic. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Last time I was flying and/or taking mass transit, I used a KN-95 mask and kept it on the entire day. I didn’t take it off until I was at my final destination. I used a fresh mask for each travel day. I also didn’t eat or drink anything in the airport or on the plane. That may be considered a little extreme. YMMV.

I’ve had at least 3 COVID vaccines. Can’t remember if I had a 4th poke.
