Friday scent of the day 5/3

Posted by Robin on 3 May 2024 241 Comments

Happy Chypre Friday! (Also, World Press Freedom Day and International Sun Day.) Our community project for today: wear a chypre fragrance of any sort — classic or modern or post-modern. (This is a repeat from 2016.)

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

When we did this project in 2016 I wore Parfum d'Empire Azemour Les Orangers, and I suppose I ought to have come up with something else for this year, but it's hard to beat Azemour Les Orangers.

Reminder: 5/10 is the International Day of Argania, so we're off to Morocco! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in Morocco, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to Morocco, or that features a local ingredient, or ?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Had a horrible headache yesterday and can’t face chypre today. Wearing a soft spritz of Chanel Comète. It is more pleasant to me than 1957, the musk is softer and I can smell the iris quite well.

Rocking the cp in Diorama from a vintage houndstooth splash bottle. Starting to feel anxious about the imminent cicada invasion.

We had one invasion when I was a school kid. The boys loved putting them in our desks.

Yes, we have one we already netted so they are unable to lay their eggs there. Mature trees may lose some leaves and branches but will be able to withstand the invasion, so no need for concern there. Although they’re noisy, cicadas are harmless, they don’t sting or bite, they can’t because they’re sucking insects. So after all those years spent living in the dark underground let’s celebrate their one brief mating season outdoors because that’s all they get!

Saw in the NYT that this is the first time the 17 yr and 13 yr broods have emerged at the same time for several hundred years. Before the Louisiana purchase IIRC

I am sorry you weren’t feeling well. Hope it is a better day for you 🌹 and glad you are enjoying the Cométe.

Yesterday was was a busier one, had to finish up a project but was able to get it done.

I think I might treat myself to an epsom soak later as a reward:) I am thinking of a nice, eucalyptus soak 🛁. Nothing like the smell of eucalyptus. I love menthol, tea tree, all those kinds of scents. Vapo Rub, I can wear it even if I don’t have a cold haha.

    Have a lovely Friday!! 🌹

I had a few chypres left in my arsenal that I could deploy today (including Knowing, Amazone, Yvresse, and Aromatics Elixir — I really can’t resist a classic oakmossy chypre) and I was torn but finally settled on nineties-era Mitsouko edt, just incomparable, a golden haze of pleasure.

I am in Tauer Une Rose Chypree. Extra points for having “chypre” in the name? A very aromatic mossy rose scent, with a lot of cinnamon in the opening.

It’s been three days since the ISP replaced the router, and the Internet is working fine. So it looks like it is the router… I would probably need to mail it to Kyiv to the authorized repairer unless the ISP can offer other solutions.

Sotd is a favourite, Knowing. Also one spritz of Azuree on my left arm because who can ever have enough chypre?
I can’t believe how I missed the news about Zoologist’s Rabbit until I saw it in the comments yesterday! It sounds like something I’d love. I might even buy it blind..

    Morning!

I went to the Chanel counter to smell Comete. Sales lady didn’t have samples to give me so here are my impressions from one wear:

Sweet candied violets on a bed of makeup powder.

I’m surprised I haven’t seen more comparisons to Apres d’londee. On me it’s soft candied violets and almondy heliotrope. But unlike AdL, Comete veers much more into makeupy territory, which I love. If AdL is violets and heliotrope in the garden after a rain, Comete is those florals in the handbag of a young lady.

Comete reminds me of Ambre a Levres due to the sweet lipsticky territory, but it is a much lighter and airier version and sans ambers.

It also reminded me of Iris Poudre, but is far more approachable than the cool, aloof quality of IP. Comete would be the younger, coquette version of her.

Surprisingly, Comete did not remind me of 1957 much at all. The only place where it resembles 1957 is in the white musky drydown, which lasted through a shower. But otherwise, the makeupy quality of Comete makes it veer away from 1957.

To me, it lasted a few hours. However it wears very close to skin and is very much a personal scent.

Overall, a pleasant wear but a no-buy for me as I already have scents that fill this niche.

This is such a reasonable statement and I agree with it 100%, and yet I still yearn for and acquire new fragrances fairly regularly. Not as much as in the past, but the itch is still there.

Oh I absolutely feel the same! I think its just the collector part of my brain that’s very excitable.

            Nowadays I think about the hassle of having to rehome unused perfumes and that stays my hand… for the most part ^^;

    • cazaubon says:

I got a very strong iris note, so I can definitely see the Iris Poudre connection. Since I have Après l’Ondée and Iris Poudre as well as Ambre à Lèvres I feel set as well.

CP: Chloe Nomade EDT. Debated heavily on the purchase, finally bought it, nearly never wear it. No idea why – will have to remedy that. Also, totally off CP – a dab of Akro Rise.

Yesterday was my birthday (nice of Donatella to share!). Spent it shopping (clothes). One or two returns may need to happen, but Ye Olde Brain is a bit foggy today, so no decisions for now.

It is indeed hard to beat Azemour, and I nearly wore that again today for the CP. But the hand went to the tiny bottle of FM Eau de Magnolia instead, and I think it works for both the CP and International Sun Day. We are, in fact, having a gorgeous sunny morning, but my weather app says it will drizzle this afternoon — boooo! I’ll just have to enjoy the sunshine while it’s here, and remind myself that the yard will enjoy the 💦 later on.

The wind is back with a vengeance and I’ll be so glad when I get to my little spot because it’s tucked away and very protected from wind. There’s a fresh layer of snow at lower elevations this morning, too. T-Rex is not a fan and went out to accomplish her business in record time. I told her, “If you were living on a farm, you’d be working out in this wind and cold, not suited up in a fleece and under a 0 degree comforter with a people pillow for your head!” She just looked at me and thumped her tail a couple of times before burying her head under the covers, totally dismissing me. She has the attitude of a cat.

Perfume wise I’m going to have to go light because I’ll be indoors helping to clean…something.

Box of Eels it is. Happy FriYAY to all and hope the weather is better wherever you are. ☺️

I don’t think I have any chypres in my collection, but I have the discovery coffret from Estée Lauder, and have Knowing on one wrist and Private Collection on the other. These are both chypres according to fragrantica. I have a feeling these scents are not really going to be my style but I had fomo and really wanted to try them lol.
I have a sample of Comete out for delivery and I’m really looking forward to trying it after reading all of others’ thoughts on it this week! Maybe someone will do a split?

Thanks God is Friday! I am finishing my last inspection of the week in an hour and I am done with my working week. Planning to relax for the rest of the day at home and have a huge cup of coffee with a shot of iris liqueur. I have been craving for it since yesterday. I may order sushi for tonight and watch a couple of movies. It was a very hard week!
    Happy Friday! ☕️

It says I can pick one up near me so I might flounce in after finals.

Ironically, iris was used in gin as a preservative, if I’m not mistaken. Can’t say it’ll extend the life of your bottle though. Maybe mix up a batch of something fun at your next get together?

I would have worn Mitsouko today because I do love it and it works great in summer heat and I have so many bottles of it, I just would have to find them – they are somewhere in the basement – so I grabbed a small box of assorted all natural perfumes that sits in my bedroom, decided to go old school and put a bit of Aftelier Bergamoss on my wrist. I was enjoying the animalic old fashioned goodness of it, but it just wasn’t enough oakmoss in there for me… Luckily I saw a mini bottle of DSH Rose Vert next to it and put that on the other wrist and that is hitting it right in the moss territory. It’s a beautiful, green, raspy and thorny rose. I need to wear it more often.

I love chypres and thought it would be easy-squeezy to do an entire week of them. But it turns out I love them so much that I’ve thunked many of my bottles! A true Chypre conundrum…

Wearing Cartier L’Heure Fougeuse (sp?), which I love, even though I can never spell it. Definitely a chypre.

It’s one of my favourite perfumes and yet I cannot ever spell it correctly either! I write it down, then look up the spelling and still sometimes I mess it up. Glorious scent, the troublesome name notwithstanding. Quintessential modern chypre. The mate note is so striking.

Bois des Iles for me today from a rapidly dwindling decant. I may add a drop of 31 Rue Cambon later from a sample. 31RC is really not me (which is why I only have a sample), but I can appreciate it.

In other news, we are still dealing with being “hacked.” The scammers used an email address only one letter off from a friend’s and copied the format, signature and tone from our friend’s email. They also were SOMEHOW able to join in an ongoing email conversation with our friend (which is how we didn’t notice at first) and hijack the thread to request Venmo to their own scammer Venmo address. The friend, Mr. SP and I all ran scans on our computers that showed nothing, no problems. Yet there was a problem! Fortunately, although we Venmo’d some money, we caught it in time to cancel the transfer of funds. In a crazy coincidence, we just heard from a friend who lives in Tennessee who had a similar thing happen to his small business and he lost $12,000.

TLDR: Please be careful online. Check email addresses closely before opening links or responding or doing any money transfers, even if it’s in a current email thread with a legitimate person.

I’m wearing Chanel Pour Monsieur which, according to the Guide, is as close to the original Chypre by Coty as possible. It is a great, austere scent, that I admire and respect but do not wholeheartedly love. Still, I enjoyed wearing it today. I’m so glad it’s Friday evening and that I don’t have to work this weekend.
On the way home from work I got off a train station early and walked the last bit back which took me through a small park, part of the way. Many different kinds of old trees, that are looking so well this spring. It was very nice, and a good way to unwind from staring at a computer screen.

For the CP, I’m wearing Note di Colonia I by Acqua di Parma. I didn’t realize it’s a chypre floral, I always thought of it as classic citrus cologne. It’s simple and so good, although with a very high price tag, so I probably won’t get more after this sample is thunk.

Continued stress and busyness at work, plus I really have to tidy up my house for my parents’ visit. SIGH. Well, will feel so good to have a clean house and projects done! I hope everyone has a lovely weekend!

I was down in the garden picking cranberries from our sprawling bush yesterday and the scent was carrying in the wind, a jammy sticky sweetness . Funnily enough my dog Sprocket was crazy about cranberries and used to ( literally) strip them off the bush, like a grazing goat – but only if I was picking them ( otherwise he would ignore the bush). So, I was tempted to wear Rose Jam this morning but I can’t really let the CP go by without wearing Mitsuoko. Maybe a post-modern combination of one on each wrist?

The scent is incredible , like someone has spread jam across the garden ( or split cranberry juice I suppose)

I remember my dog foraging for raspberries when I was on vacation in Normandy. The owners of the holiday cottage had planted plenty of raspberry plants and she was allowed to roam free to her hearts content. In true dachshund style she didn’t wait for me picking any. Sprocket clearly needed your fruit picking support!
Just go for two different fragrances today, no one will mind.

Sending my deepest condolences on the loss of your beloved Sprocket; I’m so, so sorry. How sweet that he came back in your memory picking cranberries! He is still with you and watching over you. 🤗

Interesting about the cranberry scent! I’ve been near cranberry bogs in NJ when harvest time was close, and don’t recall ever smelling anything fruity.

    Happy Friday!
I started the day in Cristalle EdT, which is lovely but very fleeting on me. The 6-8 sprays I used lasted maybe a couple of hours.
I’m going to switch to Le Parfum de Thérèse for the rest of the day.

Wearing Estèban Classic Chypre. Although a modern composition, it could pass for vintage. I remember being in the Estèban shop in Paris once, and they had a matching fragrance diffuser. That thing was gorgeous, omg. I loved walking into my room when I had that. Too bad I’ve never found it anywhere since. If I had known, I would have had them ship me a case!

Last night’s storms were transformed into a beautiful 🌞 and warm but comfortable Spring afternoon. Though I’m sad to see my crabapple and redbud trees and the very fragrant Korean Spice viburnum shrub at the end of their bloom, I’m excited that my lovely lilacs and my neighbor’s LOTV, both just outside our bedroom windows, are ready to burst into bloom. Because I like my SOTD to be in harmony with what’s going on outside my window, my theme for May fragrances will be LOTV and lilacs, and I’m really looking forward to wearing these.

There’s a little bit of Muguet hidden in my SOTD for today’s cp, the wonderfully earthy and mossy chypre that is vintage Miss Dior. I’ve been wearing this scent from when I was a teen. I used to have the houndstooth bottle and when that ran out, I purchased my current bottle, but that was long ago, too. It’s the edt in a splash bottle, a clear swirled glass column with a glass ring (or what reminds me of a saddlebag) on either side. Although I’ve occasionally seen a photo of it, I can’t find any info on it and don’t know what year it’s from. But it’s definitely vintage and the oakmoss is still going strong.❤️

A busy weekend ahead with our library’s book 📚 sale tomorrow and Sunday. I’ll be working it and already worked hard this week helping to set up. I enjoy the sale so much, not just for the first peek at goodies to bring home, but because I see so many community members I’ve worked with over the years as a volunteer in numerous organizations that I don’t see anymore and a great chance to catch up.

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead!🌹🪻🌷🌺

Good morning! I’m heading out in a wee bit to the 6-monthly fabric sale that I always look forward to. It’s a fundraiser, so I can tell myself that buying crazy amounts of fabric is a good thing 🙂 .
I’ll wear Chyprissime from Thierry Mugler. As well as smelling great, it’s also so well-named for the CP.

This made me think about an article I just read regarding an event held at a local store here where you could swap craft materials with other folks. Too much fabric, too many buttons? Leave your extra stuff and take home yarn or paintbrushes instead, etc. Such a great idea and I hope they do it again so I can join in. I’ve just recently begun sewing a bit again and remembered both why it can be frustrating and why it’s so satisfying.

TGIF! I was able to smell the local lilacs again today, and they had a scent! I enjoyed those sniffs very much. As near as I can figure, it was just too cold last time I tried.

SOTD = chypred up in Wrappings today. Adding on the Korres Mint Tea lotion in the usual spots.

Twins with allo and sorta-twins with adanst in Cristalle edp. I just love it. My powdery vintage Champagne was the runner-up, but I wanted a current chypre to prove to myself that they still exist! With this CP, NST is the best-smelling corner of the web!

Paloma Picasso today for the CP.

Was supposed to have lunch with a friend tomorrow in the Napa Valley. We were going to take her convertible. Alas, 90% chance of rain so it’s postponed.

Instead, I’ll be cleaning. My house is in pretty bad shape since I’ve been so low on energy the last few weeks.

There was an article in the Wall Street Journal about large souvenir mistakes made by designers. One of them bought a mountain lion pelt which ended up not fitting anywhere in his house. He made a comment that it was so bad his cat always hisses whenever he passes by the pelt. 🤣
