Thursday scent of the day 4/25

Posted by Robin on 25 April 2024 166 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also National DNA Day, World Penguin Day and Ella Fitzgerald’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Diptyque L'Ombre dans L'Eau, because allo wore it yesterday, and because it's a good match with the grounds of the National Mall (a favorite park as a child, when it was much less crowded than it is these days), particularly the Kathrine Dulin Folger Rose Garden administered by The Smithsonian.

Reminder: 4/26 is Frederick Law Olmsted's birthday. Wear a fragrance that connects to a public park you love, or wear something green (Olmstead liked greenery over showy flowers), or that evokes a Frederic Law Olmsted quote, or ?? More reading: When Parks Were Radical: More than 150 years ago, Frederick Law Olmsted changed how Americans think about public space at The Atlantic, 8 Famous Parks Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Plus a Tiny One You May Not Know About at How Stuff Works, or find lots of information at Olmsted Network. The Frederic Law Olmsted home in Brookline, Massachusetts is administered by the National Park Service.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Your invented word reminds me of the French word rebarbative, which means off-putting, but I’m sure you meant it in a complimentary way. 😉

It’s not invented! At least not by me. I guessed that the adjectival form was “rhubarbaceous”, but I looked it up and “rhubarbative” is the actual dictionary word that means “having the qualities of rhubarb”. Imagine my surprise!

A cousin is a huge rhubarb fan, in perfume and life in general, so she shares your rhubarbative taste…

As for rebarbative, the word make me think of cranky men sporting prickly beards.

    Hello.
Sotd is LVEB Iris Absolu. Got a compliment and the nice man asked if it was a rose perfume! It’s been quite a while since I had last been complimented on my perfume so I am happy. I did tell him what I was wearing.

I was mulling this over on Tuesday! I am still trying to get a sample but at Macy’s, getting a small sample is like asking the SA to give up their first-born loved child!

I’m wearing Ninfeo Mio because it is very green and comes in a green bottle, was named after a famous Italian garden and is one of the few fragrances I actually enjoy when I’m not feeling great (nothing major, just the remnants of a migraine).

I’m in Bucoliques de Provence, for the many, many parks in Provence. Reading about them on Wikipedia makes me wonder how there is room for anything BUT parks there! It also makes me want to go there and just breathe — surely the air is different there than anywhere else.

Provence is a magical place. The air is very dry, and it often smell of the garrigue. Bucoliques smells far tamer than the actual region but it is a lovely scent.

Guerlain Liu. It is a floral perfume, but I have not worn it in a while, and I thought it has green notes. There is something green in the opening (from aldehydes, I think), but honestly not enough to call this a green perfume. So no points for me today, I guess.

That’s always a difficult decision. I had trouble doing it with my mother, but it had to be done. I was fortunate that I had worked in that area for most of my life so knew about Alzheimer’s and dementia. Now I volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Association to educate people regarding the disease. It is good to have supportive family members like you. Hugs to you.

I am reluctant to get the test to see if I have the Alzheimer’s gene. My grandma, her sisters and my mom all had Alzheimer’s so I probably will too. I don’t really want to know. All my affairs are in order so not sure the benefit. Glad you are doing the test since it apparently feels right for you and your sister.

I’m getting a lot of nature recently, Olmsted or no Olmsted! Took my chair down by the river at dusk last night and watched a deer parade on the other side as a huge herd came down to drink and gambol. T-Rex is so good, just sat right next to me watching them very attentively, but no barking or whining. Some amazing ombré striped lizards are all over racing around under the very dry duff. They’re about as long as my hand and a few more inches for the tail. Also got a text from my boss yesterday (who is already up in the campground area) that said they saw thee Big Horn sheep right by my campground! Can’t wait to see them!

As for perfume, I’m wearing SSS Forest walk which is wonderfully green, plus a whole lot more like some nice understated florals, wet moss, and a bit of loamy earth.

Cooler today (Thank gawd!) so we are off to hunt down some petroglyph’s and pictographs.

Thanks, she’s had quite a few fails recently, but when the Urge to Herd (or the urge to snap a mouse’s neck) comes over her, it’s really tough for her to remember her commands! Generally, she’s pretty good though. I changed my setting back to public. I was messing around and forgot to switch it back. I’m getting ready to dump a crap ton of petroglyphs on IG! Very successful this morning and I bought a very extensive book in the gift shop about the petroglyphs and pictographs in the Uinta Basin area, so I’m planning on trying to identify which era the ones I photoed came from because I’m a dork! 🤓

I think I have decided that I don’t love this one and it may get voted off the island. I went through a decant quickly, so ordered a bottle and I hardly ever reach for it.
It’s absolutely gorgeous and sunny out today. I’m working by an east facing window so I’m trying to soak up all the rays I can because the next three days are supposed to rain. My days off.☹️

Went for Coudray Iris Rose, the scent is delightful but Coudray’s packaging is rubbish, the caps crack, the atomiser heads get broken, I have 3 bottles and only 1 atomiser head works. Tonight it’s Fragonard Grain de Soleil, a comfort scent for me, but don’t wear it in summer in spite of the name, it’s too rich.

Wow, that is terrible packaging! It sounds even worse than the original Omnia bottles. Those didn’t spray worth a d@mn.

SOTD = Jo Malone Forest Moss Cologne

Nice! Out of sight, out of mind.

What’s up with companies changing names of perfumes? I’m sure there are more examples but for just Frederic Malle, there are two examples: Synthetic Jungle (2021) to now Synthetic Nature (2024) and Une Rose (2003) to now Rose Tonnerre (2021), supposedly without any reformulation between 2003 and 2021. I thought there were rules about naming perfumes but of course we’ll never know the true reason for the change unless someone knows for sure.

Estee Lauder can do what it wants with the names to appeal to the audience. And right now that is China and their duty free stores.

Changing names gets to be a bit confusing sometimes, Guerlain ppl told me recently that the Fève Gourmande is just the the same as Gourmand Coquin, just a different name. I was like oh, this does smell familiar some! Lol.

I do think Guerlain is the worst in this regard…and in their case, seems more like trying to fool consumers into thinking things are new and special.

I’ve heard that those two name changes were due to copyright issues. But that doesn’t make much sense to me, you would think the legal team would have checked these things beforehand. So, who knows!

No CP for me today, but Coco Noir, which I quite like. I saw it this morning as I was tidying up my shelves and it said: “wear me!” Beautiful day today here. Mr. Mossy and I will take the year’s first walk to our favorite Mexican restaurant tonight. It will be a little cool, but I always enjoy the walk home in the dusk.

It’s pouring rain here and I am just getting around to putting on perfume. I had an emergency dental appointment this morning after I discovered two areas of decay, and then the dentist found another one when I was in the chair. Now I have a prescription toothpaste and mouthwash to use every evening. Getting older is not easy. SOTD is Grandiflora Boronia. I used to make a boronia scented soap when I was soapmaking, and I have to say that the soap fragrance oil I used smells better than the Grandiflora. Too bad.

I still have items available at the Swapmeet!

I am sorry about your dental woes. I’ve been going through them too and need another visit soon to get the final fixes done on a new crown (it had to be reshaped in the lab). I like the Boronia but haven’t every smelled any other boronia products, so have nothing to compare it to. I’m so behind I have not visited the Swapmeet yet but I should go look!

For the cp, I’m in Birch in Acacia by Scents of Wood. This is lovely and easy to wear, lightly spiced woods but not a typical woody perfume to me. It’s kinda hard to describe but very soothing.

It is really intriguing. It’s sorta kinda wood pudding but a bit more mineral or savory feel to the wood and definitely doesn’t read as sweet gourmand. Definitely worth sampling.

I’ve taken the day off so that I get a long weekend after our Anzac national holiday yesterday. It’s a glorious sunny autumn morning, and we went out early for breakfast.
I’m planning a day of doing things that I’ve been meaning to do for ages, and I’m starting with taking some clothes to a charity shop.
I’m accompanying all this with Noir de Noir.

I’m late to the party but for the CP today I am wearing LOTS of L’Artisan Premier Figueir Extreme. It is probably the most green and juicy scent I own and I’ve got a big bottle of it–ought to wear it more often.

For my new Mediterranean diet menu for dinner tonight I am making a broccoli frittata with some bits of smoked salmon and topping of parmesan. It also includes some green peas. I’m eager to give this a try.

Today was a birdwatching bonanza for me! No penguins, but I did see a bald eagle flying when I was on my way to Costco. And then later on in the afternoon, I spotted a pelican flying over my apartment complex. I didn’t realize they were up here in Colorado! Both birds were seen close to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Vrain_State_Park

SOTD = commando, except for Dionis Verbena and Cream lotion. Was in a hurry to get things done and forgot perfume.
