Friday scent of the day 4/12

Posted by Robin on 12 April 2024 225 Comments

It's Friday and the International Day of Human Space Flight. Birthdays: Beverly Cleary, Herbie Hancock, David Letterman, David Cassidy. Our community project for today: it's National Licorice Day. You know what to do!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I thought I'd never find my Kerosene Black Vines, but it finally turned up.

Reminder: on 4/19, we're off to the Netherlands (aka Holland)! (Friday is Dutch-American Friendship Day.) Wear a perfume that is named for a place in the Netherlands, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to the Netherlands, or that features a local ingredient, or ?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I thought I wouldn’t have anything for today’s cp and was surprised to learn that a favorite of mine, YSL Black Opium, has a licorice note, so that’s my choice for SOTD.

Mr. Laila surprised me with tix to tomorrow’s Andrea Bocelli concert – in Indianapolis. I appreciate the thought but why did he think making 2 trips to Indy in 1 week was a good idea? 🤔.

Although we left a day early and stayed a day late for the eclipse event, the normal 3-hour drive to Indy was 5-1/2 hrs. each way, hoping for normal a 3-hr. drive today.🤞. We spent eclipse day at a beautiful state park and, although it wasn’t a transformational event for me, we enjoyed the 4 minutes of total darkness and seeing the 🌞’s corona. But the highlight of the day was the wonderful musician playing his guitar softly, just a few feet from where we sat on the grass – his music was beautiful and hauntingly evocative of the surreal event we were about to witness. We chatted with him several times and learned he is a music professor who teaches at 2 area universities. When we said goodbye and thanked him, he gave us his one remaining cd, which we listened to all the way home, and is now a treasured memory of this special day. ❤️

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead! Time to feed 😻😻😻and be on our way! 🚘

That’s a lot of driving to Indianapolis — I hope it’s worth it! Which state park were you in? (Just curious; I used to live there and there are some nice state parks and a very good university for music.)

Today’s road trip was much better!👍. Monday we were at White River State Park at the Lunacy Festival, very nice! Just a short walk from where we stayed downtown. Adam Shuntich teaches at Anderson & Taylor Universities. Here’s a link to a couple of the beautiful songs he played that day:

    Happy Friday, everyone!
There’s a licorice note in Lolita Lempicka Homme, so that’s my scent for the day.

As a kid in the early/mid 70s, I had curly hair, which was not cool. David Cassidy’s perfect hair was what I desperately wanted, but could never achieve. In honor of his birthday, I’ll be listening to some of his solo albums. (His teenybopper status obscured the fact that he could really sing.😊)

I had similar hair envy in the 70’s. Once the 80’s came along, my big wavy hair started to fit in. ( thank you Ann Wilson. Lol)

Ditto on the hair memories. Back in the 90’s I went to a male hair stylist for a while who begged me to let him “go 80’s” with my hair. Sure, knock yourself out, I said. My hair was so big I almost couldn’t fit in my car!😂

Scent siblings! I’m in LL Minuit.
My hair is still curly, and it’s still not cool. I’ve often worn a pixie, which cuts the curl right off! And thank goodness for blow dryers. In the 70’s I used to roll my hair onto the top of my head in huge, plastic curlers and plop the dryer bonnet on top to dry. I looked a fright!

In L’Artisan Poivre Piquant for the CP.

It has been a very hectic week at work. We are turning over projects, and we have been working late hours. The next two weeks will be equally busy. We will survive!

Triple strength coffee (still remembering Bear) and a peanut butter and jelly croissant.
    Happy Friday! ☕️

It’s the summer of 1999. I’m in Toronto after having visited my mother and stepfather for a couple of weeks. I’ve taken an early bus from their town into the city so I can spend the day there before flying home to the Maritimes in the evening. Obviously I go to Holt Renfrew to browse for scents. I try on one, the brand-new Yohji Homme, but I don’t buy anything. I walk to the Cumberland 4 Cinemas (RIP) so I can watch the new(ish) German film Run Lola Run, which I’ve been dying to see. And I’m sitting there waiting for the movie to start — I arrive very early, I always do — and I’m sniffing my wrist, and suddenly I realize, “I HAVE to own this OR ELSE.” There won’t be time to buy it after the movie, or I’ll miss my flight. I do a quick time calculation. And I RUN back to Holt Renfrew and buy a bottle of Yohji Homme, run back to the cinema, mop myself off in the bathroom, and settle in for the movie.

A quarter of a century ago! And Run Lola Run is still one of my favourite movies of all time, and Yohji Homme — time has fortunately not touched my bottle — is still one of the greatest men’s scents ever made. It’s intoxicating. It’s magical clockwork, a hundred moving parts, woods and flowers and spices, rum and coffee and leather, all perfectly balanced, none sticking out or overwhelming any of the others. One of those components is licorice, which is why I’m wearing it today. And oh, I wish you could smell it, the understated greatness of it, the spell it casts.

    Hello and tgif!
Sotd is Brin de Reglisse. Smells so good and the blend of licorice and lavender is genius. Licorice is a rare note in my collection so I am happy I got my CP point!
I was scrolling Instagram looking at innocent doggie posts when I came across this horrific creature from the deep – Cymothoa exigua. I won’t go into details here but if you are feeling brave, do google. Yikes.

I could not find my sample of Brin de Reglisse, so I chose Diorella. It’s a cold day here and raining, and this scent makes things a bit more cheerful. I had big plans to clean my office today-file all the papers and get rid of old paperwork. Just got through sorting thigs into piles-driver called-on his way to a garage that’s 2.5 hours from here lol. So I’m waiting to see if they can fix him and release him, or if I have to go get him. Best laid plans of mice and men….. Hope everyone’s day is decent 🙂

    Hello everyone!

Extrait Week continues, and in a bid to pull up my poll points total (and because I absolutely love it), I went with my Champagne extrait. I might enjoy this even more than my EdT, for its more lush rose/peach accord. It shimmers like gold. I do detect the anise note but it’s very subtle here.

Off to get my oil changed before class! I’m bringing my laptop in hopes that I can do some homework while I wait.

    Have a great day all!

I never got to try the extrait but I bet it’s delicious. I had a bottle of Champagne edt when it was new, stupidly swapped it away, and bought the Yvresse shortly after the name change — hadn’t changed an iota as far as I could tell.

I chose SL Boxeuses for the CP. I love it with nose pressed to wrist, but the farther-away whiffs have more of its fruity plum note than I care for. I wore Marine Épice yesterday and will likely switch to that later on. Was surprised and happy to see wet pavement this morning as I didn’t know rain was expected at all. Spring is my Goldilocks season here — temperatures are very bearable, the light sprinkles keep the air fresh, and so much new growth everywhere. Beautiful.

I’m wearing Rodin Bis today thanks to a lovely perfume friend. This one is just so interesting — peppery, anise, violet + lots of ambergris (not amber) to my nose. I was surprised to discover that DS & Durga created it. It’s so unique that I think it should be on the list of 100 perfumes every perfumista should smell.

And in other and more amazing news, I now have a granddaughter, born last night to our eldest son and his wife. And our almost 1 year old grandson (youngest son’s child) now has a cousin. It’s a great time of year for a new baby! 😀 😀 😀

I’m debating between L’Heure Bleue and Poison today, for an anise note. Hmm…will probably start with Poison (more Germany associations…I bought a bottle there in 1993) and then do L’Heure Bleue before we head to the symphony tonight?

Desarmant…about to thunk my sample. After rain and wind all day yesterday, we are in stunning sunshine and mild temps. About to take a walk along the boardwalk. We did movies yesterday. I went to see Dune 2 (again) while my husband saw Monkey Man. And I made a stop in Dillard’s to spritz on Mimosa and Cardamom. Which I can smell!

Maybe I’ll eat some licorice for the CP.

I so wish I could wear Black Vines today, but I had a small decant from one of the sample retailers that turned in a very foul way about a year ago and I haven’t gotten around to replacing it. A good heads-up, I guess, to not invest in a full bottle, much as I adore it. Instead, I went with Douce Amere, my favorite Serge, and cousins somehow with another so-weird-it-shouldn’t-work-but-I-can’t-stop-sniffing fragrance, Arbolé!

I got an acceptance email from Free Website Guys, which mean I will get a professionally designed website! They use WordPress, and they build websites from scratch, so they won’t use my code. But I will select a theme and work with a designer, telling them how I want different parts to look. And they are supposed to design everything according to my preferences.
Maybe I will keep my DIY website for domestic clients (after translating it). I even made a new header image for it.

    Another lovely tulip! 🌷

Someone mentioned that SL Un Bois Vanille has licorice in it. Could have knocked me over with a feather (no mean feat!🤣) so that’s what I’m wearing today.

I’m camping on the Dunder Und Blitzen River, so named by Colonel George Curry in 1864 as he and his men were crossing on a stormy day. I’m sure there was a Native American name to identify it long before George named it. He, on behalf of the US Government, was in the throes of Indian warfare with the Snake tribe at the time, so just one of many reasons the native name no longer survives. The name was later changed to Donner and Blitzen, and now is just known as the Blitzen.

We are in the Oregon high desert in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge which consists of thousands of acres in SE Oregon. It’s quite wet now and the river is trucking along at speed. On the way in, cattle were hock high in standing water in heaven grazing on tender spring grass. This is the JFK Airport to millions of migrating birds and home to some species found no where else.

Started a hike yesterday but forgot my bear spray and there was a recent cougar sighting so we’ll see if I can remember it today for a hike along the river. Beautifully sunny and breezy, although rain was predicted. I love it when the weather person is wrong in this manner!

No definite plans, I just need to be in Utah by the first week in May. Just had a whole crew of baby white tails bounce through my site! So shaggy and cute, video up soon! 🦌 Anyway, I’d like to drive around here because there so much to see ( giant craters, huge lake, all kind of weird geological features) but I’m very limited because there’s no gas station nearby and in fact one of the brochures encourages bringing extra gas if you plan on be-bopping around at all.

Serge Lutens La Fille de Berlin from the cutest mini. Unfortunately going pot pourri on me today, i think the weather isn’t right. But it is reminding me that i like a pot pourri and it might be fun to have one near the front door this fall.

Should have gone with Iris Poudre again, or Daisy Wild which is super wearable and I am going to get a full bottle of at some point this summer. I miss the original Marc Jacobs perfume so much, and Wild randomly comes closest I’ve smelled to date. Watery white floral, but Wild adds some extra tropical notes. Longevity is meh but it’s fun to switch up throughout the day. Or if you have a workout class at 6pm but you want to smell fab at 11am.

I was just on Fragrantica desperately going through perfumes for licorice notes …not from the “ notes” list ( as I don’t have any “ licorice perfumes”) but from perfumes in my collection that might have hidden licorice ( e.g. Serge Lutens) when I got kicked off for “ too many requests”. I was sure I’d find something, somewhere so had been rapidly scrolling through, just looking at notes. So, I did try. So, I’m wearing Rahat Loukhoum which is in a licorice-sequence shaped travel bottle, black and angled like a piece of Licorice.

Bal a Versailles is many things but “fresh and clean” is not one of them. I can see roach spray, though, if someone wasn’t used to opulent florals.

The opening is beautiful so far. I have read reviews on Fragrantica that say the middle can get a bit animalic and/or fecal and will report back…get it? 😆🍑

I am so sad. Mxxx sounds like perfection based on the notes, but when I wore it, I smelled so soiled. I even tried it on my lower leg on a different day to see if I could approach it…but no. Sigh. I would love to smell it on someone who loves it.

Ugh, licorice. I totally missed the project of the day, but at least am seasonally appropriate in Balenciaga Paris. Violets for spring works well.

    SOTD = Lush Rentless

Is it even possible that I’ve had this for so long that I have not even worn it once? Why yes, of course! In any case, this one is beautiful overall and meets the anise / licorice community project! I will wear this more often! 🩶

Big pharma strikes again. Stories like this are sadly common. I avoid drugs like the plague, especially anything new and injectable.

As the article says, ALL drugs have side effects. “Natural” doesn’t mean safe or good for you. To ascribe blame at this point does not solve the problem, which obviously needs to be investigated thoroughly. Medications save more lives on the daily than they’ve ever negatively impacted (if being prescribed and takes as specified). Really hard to judge unless more information becomes available.

A lot of pharma companies that have failed human drugs try to dump them on the veterinary market to recoup their development costs. I have a lot of suspicion of the pharma and pet food companies.

Bertie Wooster (age 14) has taken Solensia since December 2023 and it has made a tremendous positive difference in his quality of life. He used to spend most of the day sleeping on a pillow. Since his injections began, his appetite has improved and his mobility is so much better. He runs, he plays, and he is awake many more hours.

Teflon kitty’s asthma meds are ones that humans have been using for a long time. I was made aware of potential side effects when I started using them.

She was thundering thru the apartment around lunch time like a wild thing. Very spry for a 12-year-old!

I love hearing about Teflon Kitty. What kind of kitty is she? Long or short hair? Tabby? I am a huge fan of kitties but sadly, Mr. allo is allergic.

We are big fans of a neighborhood cat, Pinecone, who visits us when we walk the hill near her house for exercise. She bounded out to see me today and it made my week!

Tef is a bronze/brown marble tabby with very dense fur, medium-length and quite soft. She has gorgeous green eyes. Some of the toes on her back left foot are white, as if she tip-toed into a bit of milk. On her shoulders she has what looks like a jaw harp.

I used to be allergic to cats. Had a few years of allergy shots as a kid. I guess they worked?

In CdG Zagorsk from my LuckyScent “anise sampler.” I do not smell the anise. At all. I love the opening, and then it just disappears — possibly because I had to dab?

I may have to grab a decant of this one (there’s not much left in my tiny sample).

(TPC sampler, not LuckyScent — and the latter does NOT list anise as a note in Zagorsk)

Gosh, has been many moons since I smelled Zagorsk so the fact that I don’t remember licorice either is probably irrelevant.

Alas, no anise or licorice for me. The closest I would have been able to come is wormwood, a note in Astier de Villatte’s Elixir du Docteur Flair.

But, this morning was cold and blustery and wet from storms, and what I longed for was a dark rose. I rarely desire rose, so I have only one, and fortunately it matched my mood and needs: George Sand by Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier and Les Parfums Historiques from back in the aughts. I sprayed just a little bit in the morning, and it’s still going strong.

I know, they are easy to not remember. Even so, I’m patiently waiting until I finally order up another of their scents—Ambre Mythiques. It has the feel of something that’s been around forever, and yet somehow the fresh lushness of its blend of herbs and amber is difficult to find without the screechiness of “woods” or syrupyness of “ambers”.

Their ambers in general used to be very popular at MakeupAlley, back in the day.

I used to love Eau Pour Le Jeune Homme (now Eau du Jeune Homme), but I think my very old bottle has turned.

Lolita Lempicka Fleur Defendue, or Forbidden Flower, for the CP and also because it smells so good. There is something about this one that makes me think of my childhood. Maybe it smells like those scented dolls they put out in the 80s? Whatever the case, I adore it.

About to go to the bakery for almond croissants and for a walk in the park before picking up dinner. It’s sunny, beautiful, and 55 degrees. Perfect spring day!

Perfect weather for my SOTD today. Alas, it’s one of the perfumes that “got away”. I didn’t want to take the chance on a failed blind buy when AG was changing their packaging and discontinuing some of their scents. Those colored bottles were the bomb!

SOTD = Annick Goutal Mandragore EdP, from The Sample Stash. So strange, and so good!

It’s green and herbal. Mostly now I am smelling anise and mint, with a hint of something spicy. Fresh mint, not the toothpaste kind.

I’m a big fan of Mandragore. It is strange but soooo good and I’m glad to learn it has anise in it.

Years ago, I was gifted one of those round collector bottles with the butterfly stopper and I also have a spray bottle. I see it come up on FB sites occasionally and I’ll keep a look out for you.
