Thursday scent of the day 4/11

Posted by Robin on 11 April 2024 144 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also National Pet Day and World Parkinson’s Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm licorice-adjacent in Kenzo Air.

Reminder: 4/12 is National Licorice Day. You know what to do!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Licorice day four: Hermès Brin de Reglisse, light and airy, what you’d get if you crossed a bag of licorice allsorts with Bulgari Thé Vert.

    Ooh, I love that picture.
I’m in Gypsy Water again and thunked my mini. AnniePerfumes, this one is hard to describe. It’s got notes of juniper and pine with a base of amber, vanilla and sandalwood- 3 of my favorite notes. It gets a lot of comparisons to Tocca Colette and I do find them similar. I prefer this one but the lasting power is not great. Especially for the price.
I ordered some more makeup from merit and it will be delivered today. Going to try the mascara and see how it compares to my Kevin Aucoin. Also ordered the lippy Sistine recommend.💋

Do you use a primer? I always do, and think it helps. I don’t have super thick lashes either. I’ve tried Kevin Aucoin the volume mascara which I didn’t find particularly volumizing, right now I’m using his Indecent mascara which I like better because it is thicker. Though not indecent imo lol.

I’ve been enjoying Ilia Limited Lash Lengthening mascara — makes my eyelashes look as bodacious as they did in my 20s, and it’s not clumpy or flaky.

I will report back. Right now I’m using his Indecent mascara which I really like. I don’t think I’ve found my holy grail mascara yet. I almost always wear mascara (but not a lot of other makeup) because my eyelashes are blond and I feel I look a bit corpse-ish without it.😂

Thanks for the review. I love all of those notes, sounds like time to sample.

I’m doing the lush tint. It saves me from mascara and I’m always ready. I don’t wear makeup and it shows, lol, so the lift/tint does something.

Curled up with my sweet dog right now. And my mom died of Parkinson’s last fall, such a horrid disease.

Fortunately I’m wearing a delicious dose of vintage Cuir Beluga to brighten this gray day. Also, I’m going out to pick up a maple flan shortly, yum. 🙂

I can get behind national pet day.

Wearing lavish amounts of Guelain Cologne Imperiale. Made sure to get it in my hair and on my shirt, to help with lasting power. I do love this fragrance all year round. I was introduced to it at Christmas time decades ago so it kind of reminds me of that season even when I wear it in summer.

Day 4 of my extrait journey, and today is special: Vol de Nuit. The first time I tried this one, I was blown away by it’s complexity. And though I like the EdT as well, they are particularly different from each other.

I am inadvertently in compliance with the CP. I put on Penhaligon’s Eau Sans Pareil from from a new decant. According to Fragrantica, there is a licorice note. It’s interesting, not sweet, a little herbal. I doubt that it will have any lasting power.

I bought a backup travel bottle when I heard it was being discontinued (I only ever had a travel bottle)…that *should* be enough to get me through, but I am still using it somewhat carefully. I may get it out today, though!

Also need a haircut…I’ve been putting it off because I’m trying to grow my hair so I don’t have to worry about having it cut in Germany later this year (I *can* speak German but trying to explain hair issues has always scared me). But one side flips really badly and it’s a mess right now. My stylist usually can tame it somewhat but hasn’t the last couple of times, so I’ve been pondering whether to try someone else.

Paid some of those pesky bills, cleaned up the house a little bit, had a counseling appointment this morning. Might do a little vacuuming if time allows. Good news that I filed my taxes last night. The federal refund was a little more than I expected but the state refund was a little less. But the money is going to not fun stuff instead of fun stuff. Will be wearing Lyric after my shower.

Kind of a big day in my little olfactory journey – just dabbed on some vintage Arpège Extrait for the first time. I wish I were better at detecting (and articulating) individual notes! At first sniff I’m getting a huge, abstract floral with hints of something musky. Heady stuff, so far – eager to see how it develops.

I wish I could wear this one and My Sin. My skin amps up the civet. But I also get those abstracted well-blended florals in Arpege (and My Sin) and find it hard to tease out the individual notes.

Wearing the last snort from a Christian Lacroix decant sent by a friend in Portland who knows i like licorice notes. I was not familiar with this one but it was his original fragrance for women from 1999. I passed on some of this decant to another friend who said she detected tarragon, which makes sense because I find that fresh tarragon has a licorice/anisic smell. Anyway, the nose is Sophia Grojsman and no tarragon or licorice or anise are listed in the notes. Much later, Lacroix did a fragrance called Absynthe which also has anise.

This is very random and nothing to do with perfume, but I can’t read the name Lacroix and not think of Ab Fab. Particularly the episode where Edina is wearing a rather awful jumper with gold letters on it saying it’s a Lacroix, when it’s obvious it’s not.

SOTD = Francesca Bianchi Mariner’s Rhyme

Newest of the new, a rare utterance this year. Just be warned, my Sephora order arrived yesterday and I have a good number of perfumes to wear. 🤣

Mariner’s Rhyme is everything that I expected: citrusy, salty, mineral, vanilla and soapy, among others. 💙

For those traveling by plane, would you swap seats? I won’t and it doesn’t matter how politely or rudely someone “asks”, I chose my seat, paid for it and that’s that. Well, there is an exception which is that if I’m in the middle seat and swapping for an aisle or window seat, I just might do it.

I had a woman traveling with two small children do just that when I flew to Montreal. It was a 2/4/2 configuration and she expected me to give up my window and the man next to me to give up his aisle so she could « not bother the two other people sitting next to them in case the baby got fussy ». We both just gave her a « hell no » stare and she sat in her seats. She could have booked those seats herself if she really wanted them. I chose my specific seat for a reason and paid extra for it. WTF.

Let me just say here that I always, always pay for three seats together for my family. It is worth paying more. I am not a cheapskate.

BUT — what the article and I think many people miss is that even when you pay for your seat specifically, you don’t always get the seat assignment. Or sometimes you don’t have a choice to buy 2 or 3 seats together or even a seat assignment period, which happened to us on our recent trip to Palm Springs. We booked a few months in advance and there were no seats available to book on one of the flights. We ended up separated, which is a risk I’ll take now that Ockeghem Teen is older (though sometimes even a teen needs a parent next to her…see below).

Last year we paid for three seats together on our trip out to Ohio and back. Air Canada changed our seat assignments on the return flight multiple times over the months after booking, because they kept changing the plane assigned to the flight. Every time, they booked us into separated seats all over the plane and I had to call them, and even with that we ended up separated on the actual flight because they changed the plane AGAIN the day of. And on the way there, we were diverted from our connecting airport and had to take whatever rebooking we could get to try to get to my grandmother’s with time to visit, so despite having paid for seats we were separated. (In that case, the joke was on all the people who were separating us; Ockeghem Teen has a long history of nausea on flights, and she puked three times on one of the flights and one time we couldn’t reach her with a bag.) Anyway, I had to request a refund for our seat charges from both United and AC because we didn’t get our seats.

That said, if we’ve paid for and gotten three seats together as a family, we’d be unlikely to move if someone asked. And if I’ve paid for a window seat on a long / overnight flight, I’m not giving it up unless I get another window seat. But I am a bit more understanding now than before I had a kid, depending on the circumstances, given my experiences.

The article said the airlines are making more of an effort not to separate families but it sounds like that’s not the case.

I was traveling with my dog and wanted the window seat near the bathrooms for the extra space and access in case we had a messy emergency.

If someone told me they were a barfer I would have volunteered to swap seats antwhere away from them. :-0

I have swapped seats a couple of times on a flight. In each case, the would-be swapee was very polite about asking. I was also flying solo, so it’s not like I was sitting next to a friend or family member that I would have moved away from by swapping.

Polite asking versus demanding makes a big difference if it is not an even-swap. One time the woman sitting in front of me asked me to swap with her (my window for her middle). One look at her was enough to shut her up.

I wore FM Geranium pour Monsieur earlier today. It has the aniseed note – it is a very fleeting, blink-and-you-miss-it anise, but it is there.

Now I am wearing Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin for its licorice note.

Rain has been pushed back to tomorrow (yay!) and I am enjoying another day of sunshine. I found a tiny mini of Jean Patou 1000 in a box, so I am wearing that today. It is a little bit too powdery for me to consider getting more.

I know I tried 1000 several times but sadly I remember nothing except that I was not moved to get more. I totally regret not getting Joy in extrait though!

I’m wearing Heeley Cuir Pleine Fleur, which I can’t really smell all that well. Again an old sample, it does not smell off, but it has lost its oomph.
I’m spoiled rotten this week with the weather. It was sunny and crisp, warming up to about 18 degrees (C) in the afternoon. Another gorgeous day, which I spent mostly wandering around Colmar.

I’m jealous! I love Colmar — what a beautiful city, and the Isenheim Altar is one of my favourite pieces of art ever. Plus…good wine!

It’s my birthday, and I’ve taken today and tomorrow off work for a nice four day weekend. No perfume yet but I’m pretty sure it’ll be Pale Fire by Maison Anonyme. My beloved is just finishing up making French toast and bacon for brunch. Planning to go to a movie a little later and pick up some dinner from a new restaurant that just opened in the neighborhood. Thankful for a brief bald eagle sighting in the sky when I went on my balcony a few minutes ago! 🦅

Thank you! I’m glad you got to see eagles in the wild too. Actually, soon after I posted this, I also saw a Cooper’s hawk in the trees across the street from me. There’s a small patch of wooded area there, and it’s a good place to spot some wildlife.

Gosh, you mean I could have been having a licorice week if I’d been properly engaged? I’ll have to wear all my licorice-inflected perfumes tomorrow all at once!

Slow, rough start to the day, lots of tears, home PT session that basically just consisted of me apologizing for crying and the clinician telling me to skip my exercises and just rest. But, it’s a gorgeous, sunshiney day and I refuse to spend it pouting, so I’ve pulled myself together with a nice top, properly sorted hair, earrings, lip gloss, and generous splashes of SMN Caprifoglio, one of my desert-island fragrances and a reliable spirit lifter.

I’m so sorry that your recovery is off to a rough start. Do what your PT says. 😉 I have had to do some exercises for hip pain but it was still bothering me a lot. Then I remembered my PT said, it’s not supposed to hurt! So I started being a little more gentle with myself. That helped.

Sampling Kilian Princess which is a reformulation of the I Don’t Need a Prince blah blah blah original to the best of my knowledge. I have the original and this weaker in comparison…less green tea and more generic. We are wise buy first editions and fear reformulations, friends! 😆 …so says the Enabler…

White Cube for me today. Good news — the car broker just called and has found us what seems to be a decent used car. We should be able to see it tomorrow or on the weekend. Of course, I pointed out that I didn’t think the price was great and that we could just spend a bit more and buy new…until I went online to look at dealer inventory and realized that there simply are no new cars in the model we want and vanishingly few used ones. So beggars can’t be choosers or negotiators, I guess.

I am wearing Dolce and Gabbana Devotion today and wishing I would have bought the bottle instead of the travel spray. I am really more of a bottle person when it comes to picking my sotd. Devotion has become a favorite though so I moved it in with the bottles.

Somehow, Teflon kitty must have had an inkling that today was National Pet Day. She spent about half an hour sitting on the couch next to me, occasionally giving one of my hands a bath while grooming herself. 😽

OTOH (or paw?), she did throw up in a couple of spots this morning. At least I didn’t step in it (didn’t have my glasses on at the time).

Have plenty of bright, sunny weather to share with anyone who has had far too much gloom, rain, or snow lately!

SOTD = Eris Delta of Venus, from The Sample Stash. It pairs very nicely with the Josie Maran Vanilla Vibezzz Body Butter. I am really digging the VV Body Butter lately.

One of the vets I had in NJ used it to describe a certain behavior cats can do. They eat kibble way too fast, and it comes right back up.

            Dogs might do that, too.
