Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, early April 2024

Posted by Robin on 6 April 2024 188 Comments

Saturday is New Beer’s Eve and Tartan Day. Sunday is National Beer Day, National No Housework Day plus World Health Day.

As always, we're celebrating anything and everything with our standard open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, what's blooming in your area right now, what fragrance unicorn you're still searching for, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Went sniffing at Fueguia yesterday and I decided not to buy anything.

Reading More and eating angel food cake

I need some sort of filter where I never see the word “cake” in the comments! Or where it changes the word “cake” to something I don’t want, like “kale”.

j/k, sort of. Hope it is delicious.

It was delicious- our Amish farmers at our local green market are back with all their baked goods, eggs and other deliciousness
The strawberry angel food KALE they make is really good

Yes, I did. It was quite a while ago when LuckyScent had it. I really liked it, but didn’t do anything about it and now the price is higher.

Todays photo is stunning! I’d like to have that on my wall except I have no wall room anywhere.

Was looking for something neutral and under the radar today so I went with SL Une Bois Vanille. The perfume that’s so versatile you could wear it on a sick day, to a wedding, a funeral, or on a gloomy, drizzly day like today. 🌧️

We did luck out and get a few hours of sunshine yesterday. Finally got my Saks order straightened out so that should be arriving to my mail service before I head to Utah.

Have a great weekend and hope the sun is shining bright wherever you are! 🌞

This photographer (Judy Dean) does wonderful flowers and has appeared here often. I’ve done a week of her photos before and will probably do so again!

      Glad Saks is worked out.

Just went to her flickr site- amazing! I love the way she uses a common subject (like flowers) and then makes it electric! I was going to let the Saks order just fade away since it seemed the universe was telling me I don’t need to be spending that kind of money (BdI extrait), but then I thought, the heck with the universe! It’s not the boss of me! 🙃 💸💸💸

I was lamenting about not being able to get it anymore. I’ve had nebulous plans to to purchase the extrait for YEARS…anyway, Foxbins came to the rescue to let me know there was some available at this Saks…here the number to that particular Saks: +1 (212) 753-4000
Keep pressing buttons until you get to the Chanel counter. Good luck!

It seems it’s also still available on Chanel’s Canadian site? Not so helpful for Americans, who don’t tend to have mail receiving services on the other side of the border like we do…but very helpful for Canadians. 🙂

Mr. Ockeghem asked me this morning what I wanted for my birthday…hmm.

It’s on the US website too, but listed as Sold Out. What would I do without all my perfume friends helping me spend money?!😜 And coumarin, “entirely unrelated” has all of us on the edge of our seat wondering, wondering, wondering..!

    Hello all!

I went sniffing with my friend yesterday and tried a ton of pretty new perfumes. Unfortunately a bit early for the new Frederic Malle and the new Chanel, but I did wrangle myself an invite to the Comete launch in May. I tried the new Guerlain L’Art et la Matiere which was lovely but I can’t do those prices.

I was thinking of doing a week of extraits this week, since I pulled out my little box of extraits out of storage. Have we done that for a Friday poll? I could probably do more than a week of I’m honest….

In that vein, I’m in my Gucci Rush extrait, a thing I didn’t know existed until I found it online a few years ago. It comes in a red metal bottle and slides into a block or red clear acrylic. It’s recognizably Rush but a bit gentler with more legible florals.

    Have a great weekend everyone!

Haven’t really felt like posting these past few days for some reason. My nephew had to make the hard decision to put down his dog yesterday. Titus was suffering and it was time. I feel bad for my nephew because that was his buddy for 14 years. Wearing Pleasures today because I wanted something spring.

    Hello and happy weekend!
    Sotd is Amouage Epic.
Has anybody ever felt the temptation to complete a perfume collection of the same line? I have Dia 40 and Honour 43, both of which I love, and I am just missing Epic 56 from the Extraits collection. I don’t feel anything special with it yet there’s this tiny nagging “final piece of the puzzle” feeling. Thankfully the price tag requires second or third thoughts.

bought one thing at Sephora sale – eye cream.
just some house cleaning today cause tomorrow is NO house cleaning day.

Post shower some Chanel, maybe Allure, maybe Sycamore since very chilly here in LA.

I have a bottle of L’eau but I might wrap it and bring to the great nieces in Florida and they can split.

All my Chanel samples go into the little black Chanel bags, they love opening all their treats.

Oh have to pack a fragrance for trip. We so hate being limited, don’t we?

I am trying out my new Hypnotic Poison eau Secrete today. It’s very light. It smells like an orange Creamsicle that was sprayed lightly with original HP. I’m digging it, but will spray more next time.

Trying to figure out what to pack for our vacation. Been such a long time since I went on a trip longer than a couple of days. I’m generally an efficient packer…almost underpack. But this is a new place, very different weather. I may only bring Beachwalk. Maybe I’ll dig through other samples.

As someone who is currently on a trip, I’ve learned I’m terrible at knowing what a numeric temperature actually feels like IRL. I’ve done a crap job at packing warm enough clothes for the weather forecast. At home I have 18 million coats and just grab what feels right for the day.

I’ve done 3 weeks in Italy in a carry on, but my my full size suitcase on a 10-day CA road trip feels barely adequate!

      Good luck in your packing!

    Happy Saturday, everyone!

Not sure what got into me this morning, but I’m wearing a long discontinued and forgotten fragrance from the 70s. From Fabergé, it’s called “Macho.” You really need to Google “Fabergé Macho Print Ad” to see how hilarious the ad campaign was for this “masculine” cologne. (“Macho. It’s b-a-a-a-d.”) The bottle alone is worth the price of admission. Yikes.

Turns out it’s a more floral version of Fabergé’s “Brut,” and it’s not bad at all. I certainly wouldn’t describe it as “macho,” or “hairy-chested,” despite what Fabergé hoped to connote, but it is definitely old-school.

The sweet lavender, basil, clary sage, shaving cream opening brings me right back to the barbershop of my youth, “Rick’s.” I lived about a half block from Rick’s shop, and by the time I was eight or nine, I’d be sent there by my parents, and told to ask for a “Princeton” haircut, which was just about as short as a crew cut, but without the military style flat top. Just long enough to part it on the side, as they did, presumably, at Princeton.

    I digress.

“Macho” is mossy and musky in the dry down, and there’s a hint of something sweet. (Heliotrope? Vanilla?) No one smells like this anymore, at least in any of my circles. Perhaps that’s just as well. It won’t be my SOTD very often, but as a reminder of my childhood days, it has a place in my collection.

Curious if others have scents that are vividly evocative of years gone by, but that rarely make it onto skin anymore.

One that takes me back but that I’ve not smelled in the wild for a very long time is Grey Flannel. I wore it for a brief time just after graduating high school and thought myself très avant garde. I own a bottle now, but can’t wear it — it’s not memories but what I think is a sage note that disagrees with me.

I have YouthDew Bath oil just for connection with my grandmother. It is so much her scent to me that I cannot wear it myself. I also own her actual (circa 1980) bottle of Chanel No 5 EDT.

From my own past, I have Shalimar, Bonne Bell Skin Musk Oil and Egyptian Musk. I occasionally wear the latter 2 but none of them is really my taste anymore.

Fragrance and smells in general really link to memories in a way the other senses don’t.

What a nice perfume story! One that I used to wear when I was young was Coty Imprévue. I bought a vintage bottle not too long ago, but it float my boat anymore. But the one I was heartbroken about was finding Love’s Warm Woodsy Musk. It had gone off so much that it was unwearable. There were also a jasmine and orange in the series.

Speaking of commercials for masculine scents, I was a sucker for one for British Sterling. Remember the one where a beautiful woman in a Juliet-type gown on a horse rides toward a princely man and presents a bottle to him on a silver tray? “Make him a legend in His Own Time.” How I loved that one! My brothers and I got him a bottle one Christmas, too. He was such a good sport – he wore all the ones we gave him.

When I was a young kid, I had a toy/mini doll (called Liddle Kiddle). She was scented with lotv and even had a spray of flowers in her hair. I remember inhaling the scent as I opened the container to bring her out.

Another lovely crisp autumn morning – two in a row 🙂 . I’m looking forward to a walk after a bit of housework.
Meanwhile, my clothes still smell of last night’s Aimez Moi, one of a few Carons that I bought early in my perfume career.
I think I got a slight whiff of acetone when I first sprayed it, but that disappeared in a few moments. That’s a bit worrying, I’ve never had a perfume turn on me yet, but I’m aware it’s a possibility.

Oh! Aimez Moi is a beauty I haven’t thought about for ages. I think I have a bit of the bath oil, must dig around. Caron is one of my fave houses in general, especially the vintages. And yes, I know that acetate note that dissipates. I am not sure if it’s a feature of Aimez Moi or a bug but I suspect the latter and that there is some aromachemical in it that goes off while everything else sails along smoothly. It is a beautiful perfume and you smell wonderful.

I just realized I missed National Walking Day which was April 3rd this year. Oh well, I probably walked that day, too!

Wearing Rauque again. ♥ And later I’ll put on SL A La Nuit for a soft jasmine spring vibe. We had the best dinner last night at a local Seattle restaurant (Mamnoon). I forgot to ask if they still had candles for sale as I think they did for a while, or at least had a connection to some. If you like middle eastern food and you visit Seattle (and you’ve already had your fill of clam chowder and salmon, etc.), I highly recommend it!

Thanks for the support yesterday. Everyone’s experience is different, whether you’ve experienced earthquake previously or a newbie. The suggestion to stand under a doorway may not necessarily be a good one at this point as the idea is to get out of the way of items that can potentially fall. Anyway, there was the article below from the NYTimes for the newbies:

    https://www.nytimes.com/article/what-to-know-about-earthquakes.html?unlocked_article_code=1.iE0.gEDh.bPudOTOFrXjq&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

That perfume sounds like an absolute treat! I’ll have to read the article because I always thought a doorway was the best place, too. Or outside as long as nothing is about to topple over on you.

I was in grade school in Seattle when the 1964 Alaska earthquake hit. 9.2 magnitude so of course Seattle felt it, and the teachers herded us all out to a covered section of the playground — possibly the worst place we could go, since the cover consisted of a flat piece of concrete about 30 by 30 yards. We had no idea!

Actually, it couldn’t have been the Alaska earthquake. According to Wikipedia, that one happened well into the evening hours so I wouldn’t have been in school. There was a different quake that was centered in Puget Sound in 1965, and that’s probably the one I’m remembering. It was 6.7 magnitude so much less violent than the Alaska quake, but it was still very strong and very stupid to have gathered us all under a big slab of concrete. 😵‍💫

I was in high school when I experienced my first earthquake in Idaho: the 1983 Borah Peak Earthquake. I was getting ready for school at the time when the shower door started banging. I ran for the bathroom door and braced myself. I was freaked out the rest of the day.

My Dad was sleeping at the time, since he worked nights. He thought someone was shaking the bed to wake him up, and he was rather upset until he realized what was really going on.

My brother missed it, since he was on a school bus headed towards his school.

We’ve had something of a good news week. Mr. Ockeghem got a large grant that we’ve been waiting to hear about for 9 months, and the director of his school at the university was not renewed for a second term. (The director has driven the culture off a cliff over the past 5 years and made it very stressful.) Now, fingers crossed that we can nail down an apartment for the sabbatical this fall when we chat with a potential landlord tomorrow. My rusty German will get a workout…

I am continuing the salt/pepper train with today’s SOTD which is Aesop Ouranon from a sample that someone thoughtfully sent along in a swap. (If it was someone here, here thank you!). It’s very minerally and while salt and/or pepper are not listed in the notes, it has that quality to me that some dry minerally wines have and which I love. In general, I’m a big fan of this line, which is based in Australia. I wish it lasted longer on my skin but because I keep re-upping, I have now thunked the sample.

Trying to figure out where I could be in the US in the next few months to get a Luckyscent sample, since I also need SMN Rosewater and I can only get that through Luckyscent, so I might as well order that and a sample, rather than paying Etiket an exorbitant shipping fee for a sample.

    Wearing Prada Infusion d’Amande.

We canceled the plans to drive to Buffalo today to watch the eclipse. Buffalo is now having a cloudy, rainy forecast for tomorrow. We were going to stay there at my friend parents’ place and it is already too late to consider another destination in the path of totality. Instead, we are driving to Albany very early tomorrow morning, where at least the sun will be covered 97%. Still very interesting and exciting.
Well, at least I didn’t have to wake up very early today. I am having my first cup of coffee and a hash brown. I will relax for a while and then continue with the decluttering.

2 days of vacation down, enjoying my morning coffee on the 3rd.

I’ve been commando so far, though I do have a bag of samples with me, I just keep forgetting to play with them.

On Friday I spotted some Stora Stuggan for sale in the wild. I sniffed bottle caps of a couple, and sprayed Moonmilk on my hand. I didn’t care for it, the lime and leather combo felt rough and screechy. (I love leather.)

They didn’t have Hexensalbe, but I have a sample at home. I really wanted to love it due to the notes, bottle and name, but it wasn’t and insta-buy for me. Wishing I’d stayed Silphium instead of Moonmilk. Now I want to properly try that one (Silphium).

Yesterday, visited an avocado farm (of my cousin’s in laws) in the midst of a bunch of citrus groves. Was given some pomelos nearly the size of my head. When I get to my friend’s house on Monday, plan to use them to make some good cocktails.

I think it was a pomelo frag (Atelier Cologne) that sent me down the rabbit hole in 2018.

Yesterday I swapped out my winter scents for more spring and summer. So today I’m in TF Lost Cherry as the sun has disappeared and it’s cold and rainy 😆.
I bought 2 new Diptyique candles, the Cafe and the Biscuit. The US site gave me a small Cafe as a gift and they included their big matches. I don’t have good luck with their perfumes on my skin, but I adore the candles. I’m burning Rose Delight right now.
On a none perfume comment, I’m trying a new recipe for dinner tonight; Crispy Tofu on a bed of sautéed greens with spicy peanut sauce. It looks really good I hope I do it justice.

Wearing Latte Bianco sample, trying to tie up loose ends before another 2 weeks straight of work. This may be my favorite gourmand vanilla sample I have. I think there were so many in the running that I couldn’t decide which gourmand I liked out of all my samples and went with drier choices but may have to circle back for full bottle next year.

Part of me is glad I am working for the eclipse tomorrow and will be above the fray. And it is supposed to be cloudy here.

Counting down the days until my Lasik surgery on Thursday.
This weekend it was super warm, especially today it felt more like summer than spring (27*C)!
I wore Aqua Decima and Green Water over these days.

Wow, that’s warm! Hoping that’s not a trend as we’re moving to central Europe this summer and I’ve already been there — multiple times — in near-40C temps without air conditioning or fans.

Wishing the best for the Lasik!

I have had a few Meo Fuscioni samples, so I’m trying them out. Today is Little Song, which is a real shapeshifter. On a tester strip, it smelled very dry and dusty, but it warms up beautifully on skin. Main notes are coffee, tobacco, and rose. I don’t get much rose, but it’s still polite, not too heavy -smelling. I could swear there was lavender, but that note isn’t listed on Fragrantica. It’s reminding me of La Rhapsodie Noire. I actually prefer Little Song, even though I have a bottle of the Dusita. I started to notice something a bit screechy about the latter. Will be up for swap! 😉

A good vacation day was had: morning walk that took me to the beach, then a hike in the hills (with territorial views out to the sea), lunch, a movie, then some solo shopping and a very indulgent, impromptu jewelry purchase (but it was beautiful, unusual, creative work; I’m very judgy and bored of most jewelry).

Finally pulled out my samples and am in CdG Play Black.

Oh, I forgot to mention: the last hotel I was in (for one night, $$$) had lovely body products from a company called Sangre de Fruta in the scent Garden of Earthly Delights (cedar, sandalwood and bergamot).

If I hadn’t just bought the jewelry, I’d be tempted—I’ve had a tab open on my browser for a few days—even though the prices are beyond what I would normally spend in this category ($60 USD for 500ml body wash).

    Good stuff though!

I have some of their bath salts from a local shop, and keep meaning to use them, but I’m so lazy on taking baths. But every time I look at the pouch I have Paul Simon in my head. (“The Sangre de Cristo, the blood of Christ mountains in New Mexico.?)
