Friday scent of the day 3/29

Posted by Robin on 29 March 2024 206 Comments

Happy Friday! It’s also National Vietnam War Veterans Day. Birthdays: Pearl Bailey, Astrud Gilberto, Eric Idle. Our community project for today: celebrate Astrud Gilberto's birthday by wearing Robert Piguet Fracas (her favorite), or wear a fragrance that fits her music, or ?

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in vintage Fracas. I expect I'll hear Astrud Gilberto on the radio before the day is out.

Reminder:  on 4/5 we're doing salt & pepper...wear a fragrance with salty notes, pepper notes, or both. (I think this was suggested by Calypso, please correct me if I am wrong!)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m still commando but plan on wearing Amouage Love Tuberose as my substitute for Fracas, which I don’t own. And yes, I did suggest that CP and am glad we’re doing it! I did so after realizing how much I love pepper notes in perfumes. (Salt ones I’m not so familiar with, but I am sure they exist.)

We are off early to go to the hospital where my brother has several appointments today. Wish us luck–we’ll learn more what his latest tests show and meet with his oncologist to discuss plans for how to resume his chemo treatments now that he has recovered fully from pneumonia.

On my way out to have a long walk in the park. Back home, I will continue with the declutering. I’m looking forward to the weekend. It will be sunny and in the upper 50s.

Thanks for the link, Hajusuuri. Any advice on decluttering is always helpful. In my case, it is not only throwing things away but organizing them right and in a very nice way. That’s the toughest part.

I chose Mediterraneo for the CP, partly because the name sounds like it could be the name of a song sung by Astrud Gilberto, and partly because it’s soft and smooth and just a little bit sweet/tart. There’s a line in The Girl From Ipanema (currently stuck in my head, btw) that goes “… and when she passes, each one she passes goes, ‘ahhh’”, and that seems fitting for the perfumed world.

Not sure if it ties in, back in Vivacious–it is springy & cheerful.
Just had Kerrygold Irish butter on my toast, trying to wean myself from my Brummel & Brown habit–it’s tasty and spreadable, but contains the dreaded palm oil.

    Hello and tgif!
I have arrived in KL safe and sound! Had a simple dinner (Malaysian Nasi Lemak or Curry chicken and coconut rice) and just finished unpacking. I want a shower, stat.
Sotd is Petit Fracas but only 2 humble spritz under my shirt because a heavy perfume cloud in a small air cabin feels like a very bad idea.

Commando but will almost certainly end up in Prada Infusion d’Iris again — will be spending lots of time in meetings today and I do not have the energy to choose another “I like it and it won’t offend people” fragrance.

My employer is holding a big eclipse event on the 8th. And I just registered Mr. Skal and myself — only to find that the commemorative t-shirts are already sold out (registration opened W, and I’ve been flat out with work all week, so this was my first open minute to register)! True that one of the last things I “need” is a printed t shirt, but I am bummed.

Warby Parker boutiques are giving away eclipse glasses, while supplies last, starting April 1. I may go just to get one and give it to my sister who has an irrational fear of getting her eyes damaged even though she will not be looking at it!

Well if you don’t look at it, that fear definitely is irrational. 😂

That said, possibly more people who look at it should be worried. Can’t remember what publication, might have been NYT, but I recently read an article about people who sustained permanent eye damage.

        I’ve decided I won’t look either 😵‍💫

Fracas – according to the theme.

I have just returned from a mine safety training, and I am still a little shaken. We were shown replicas of different explosive devices (mostly landmines) and told some terrifying stories involving people losing limbs and lives. Just the thought that these things are lying around in forests and fields makes me sick. And they look so ordinary… However, I learned important things – like what to do if you are in a minefield, for example.

The short version – do not touch it, call the police. Which, I guess, most people know already.

The bad news is that some landmines can be triggered by a change in electromagnetic field. So you get your phone from a pocket or purse and start calling, the mine explodes under you and you lose a leg or worse.

If you are in a minefield and you came there by a beaten path, you should backtrack. Mark the spot with something like a scarf, get at least 200 meters away from the spot and then use your phone. However, if it is not a beaten path (say you left a road in a forest), backtracking is not safe, because you may step on another mine while backtracking. Stay where you are, wait till you see other people approaching, warn them, and then they should call the police from a safe distance. If no one comes (hours, days), you can call the police yourself, hoping you are lucky and that this is not one of those electromagnetically triggered mines.

No problem, hajusuuri. It helped me to remember it myself.
And correction/clarification: if you stepped on a mine, it will explode anyway (if it is an anti-personnel mine). The instructor told us that in films you can sometimes see a person stepping on a mine and other people trying to put stuff under that person’s feet to prevent the explosion. And based on his experience in reality mines do not work like that (at least the ones he is familiar with). So all these safety instructions I wrote above are for situations when you see several mines nearby, that is you did not step on a mine but are surrounded by them.

Had no idea about change in electromagnetic field trigger. Scary, I’m glad it was helpful, I have memories as a child of hearing on the radio of landmines exploding on the Normandy beaches, remnants of D Day landing.

The first time I learned about mines like this was when I was a teenager on a WWII reading bender and came across the term “Bouncing Betty.” Had to go look it up and that was the first time I truly realized human beings are absolutely crazy. What kind of mind could think this 💩 up? Insanity! I hope you’re staying as safe as possible given the circumstances. Sending mom and Kora Kitty good vibes, too.

    Hello all!

I slept in this morning after getting home from the concert at around 1:30am. Haven’t done that for a concert in a long time. It was a fabulous show, and we managed to get upgraded to much better tickets that I suppose didn’t sell? It was a really fun night. I wore the Madame X perfume that was released a few years ago, with a fruity rose, spice, and incense, to match my pink outfit.

Today I’m in Vamp a NY, one of my preferred tuberose. I do have a mini of vintage Fracas but I rarely feel like wearing it.

    Have a great day everyone!

Tuberose is really one of the only notes I don’t really enjoy wearing (in a soliflore context) , so Vamp is one of the rare exceptions.

I’m wearing Fracas, as I forgot to listen to Astrud Gilberto’s music and couldn’t think of anything else. So Fracas it is, both extrait and edp.

I am sure that if Moon Bloom had been around when Astrud was wearing Fracas she would have switched perfumes; I chose it for the CP today. It dries down to a tropical coconut, the way I imagine Brazil’s beaches smell.
Sunny today (yay!) so I am going outside while it lasts.

jalapeño – perfume surfaces are just the tops of dresser drawers. I really should put away my perfumes although I probably need more perfume dressers.

HSBC rant – I know I shouldn’t call them out be eh 🤷🏻‍♀️, I have legitimate concerns! I had a largish CD which matured last week. Having no more branches in NJ and the sad state of checking account interest (true of other banks as well), I decided to close my account. I was told it will take 3-5 business days for me to get a check. On the 6th day, I called to find out the status for me to discover that nothing was done! I was seriously ticked off! It will take another 3-5 days before I get my check. Incidentally, it was my HSBC card which I never activated that was compromised and I had to deal with that while I was on vacation. It happened a second time with another HSBC card about a year later. I hope to never have to deal with them again after I get my check although who am I kidding because they will mess up the closing of my checking account.

I give it a 39% chance of them doing it right. We’ll see.

I told the CSR to please make sure the previous CSR gets “disciplined” although I probably should have used the word “coached” instead.

Actually, if the U.S. is like Canada, the word you should have used was “complaint.” In Canada, if you tell branch staff that you want to file a complaint, it goes into a an established and monitored process because we have to report it to the government. And they take it a LOT more seriously. A manager will get involved, trying to resolve it in the 14 days we have before it has to get reported.

I believe the U.S. is similar, though it’s been a decade since I last had to think about dual regulation.

Fortunately they’ve just left the Canadian market, selling all their branches to Royal Bank. (Not that the service will be that much better with RBC…)

We had something similar recently with another Big 5 Canadian bank credit card; Mr. Ockeghem closed it and asked to have a cheque sent because we had a credit. A month later, no cheque had arrived. And of course when he closed the account they shut down our online access, so we couldn’t see if the cheque had been sent. So he had to call again, only to find out that they’d never issued a cheque. We finally got it last week.

Seriously, where is the training? I once went to a branch to close my account. Wouldn’t you know it about a month later I got a statement showing that I owed $12 because I had a zero balance and the minimum to not get charged was $100!

Branch staff, especially the most junior, can turn over quickly. But they shouldn’t be out on the floor if they can’t handle the basics, like closing an account.

That really sucks about HSBC. But it seems that banks are rewarded for incompetence. Otherwise, you wouldn’t hear so many horror stories.

I’m looking to get a perfume dresser as well. Right now I have some clear plastic drawers, but they get a little unhappy if several 100mL bottles are hanging out in them. But they work great for samples and decants.

Accidentally CP compliant, I think!, in HG’s Shangri La. Sort of fits Gilberto’s vibe. I hadn’t realized that she passed away last year. Ah well.

In other news, The Strategist (which is basically a product
catalog written in long form!) compiled their info on 58 famous people’s perfumes. For the record, I only recognized a handful of names of said famous people. I am waaaay too old! Apologies that these are basically sales pitches wrapped up as info, but it was fun to see what the youth are wearing these days (yes, I know some are not so young!): https://nymag.com/strategist/article/celebrities-favorite-perfume.html?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Strategist%20Thursday%20Digest%20-%2003282024%20-%20Thu%20Mar%2028%202024&utm_term=Subscription%20List%20-%20Strategist%20%28MASTER%29

CP-compliant, as I dug out the sample of Fracas that I’ve had for, what, almost 20 years? It’s not my favourite tuberose (I’m not generally a tuberose person, anyway), but I’ve kept the little bit I have as a reference.

I’m about to head out to the butcher, which may be a mistake. I didn’t order anything for the holiday; I just need some stuff for tonight and then to make Roman Easter soup broth. But the hordes are probably lined up for their holiday pickup. Oh well.

As of yesterday, I appear to have turned a corner in my healing process, away from feeling like a car crash victim and towards a new readiness for pleasure. I couldn’t be gladder, and one of the main manifestations of this is a sense of eagerness to smell good things, and to smell good. So last night’s shower was a luxuriance of Lush things, and today I started off in a few spritzes of Safran Troublant for its always-welcome sweet lovely cuddlesomeness. Fracas, or any tuberose, would be a natural transition as this fades, so I’ll be joining the CP a bit later!

Taking a yard work break. There is an enormous leaf pile in the backyard mostly comprised of the leaves I raked from the front yard. I know the pike will sink nicely as the leaves decompose and that is better than sending them to the landfill.

Even before reading that Fracas was Astrud Gilberto’s favorite, I imagine her as a white floral wearer. I am wearing Tom Ford Black Orchid Voile de Fleur.

I dug through a couple boxes to find my vintage Fracas mini parfum and have a dab on each wrist. This fits the mild, sunny spring day well. We’ll be going out to a movie later, and I am so happy it’s warmed up a little and the sun is going to be with us for at least a few days.

Yesterday I didn’t get around to posting because it was my Friday so I was taking care of work and then we went out for dinner and a concert. I wore Reglisse Noire during the day and an older, discontinued DS & Durga, Sir, for the night out. Sir was a gorgeous, rich masculine chypre with depth and a touch of funk. I have about 3ml left in a decent and am a little regretful I didn’t buy a bottle. It’s one of those rare masculine perfumes that straddles the line of almost being too manly for my personal comfort but luckily doesn’t cross that line.

Also, for World Theater Day on Wednesday, one of our local theaters had an amazing deal on tickets to Spring Awakening, which will be in June. We got 6th row right side tickets for $27 each instead of $99 for the opening weekend Saturday show! I’ve never heard any music from the show so hopefully we like it. We had such a good experience at this theater earlier this month at a production of an Agatha Christie spoof musical that it was worth taking a chance on this great deal for tickets.

Burberry Goddess this morning from my new travel spray. I got a new sitting/standing desk and one of the drawers is the perfect size to keep all my samples and a few travel size bottles in, so I’ve mostly been wearing scents from the drawer lately.
I’ve also been on a bit of a Sephora/Nordstrom scent trip lately, and spending some time in the fragrance subreddits, and they are really into designer frags.
Anyway, I really enjoy Burberry Goddess. It is sort of a less syrupy, less floral Mon Guerlain, and I really like the vanilla. It is pleasant and has good lasting power on my skin.

In other news, the top notes of my old bottle of Prada Infusion d’Iris have gone off. I have a backup bottle that I might open and use, or I may quest ebay for an old formulation that could still be fresh.

Does anyone find the new Infusion d’Iris formulation to be disappointing, or are the rumors just a red herring?

Very late to the party today. I slept like the dead for over 10 hours and I have no idea why. I’m feeling frisky this morning! Well, as frisky as an old lady can feel, which is basically a moderate shuffle instead of an all out waltz. For the first day in I don’t know how long, it’s not raining and the sun is out! Eating breakfast for lunch then will take doggo for a walk about.

I’m familiar with the song, but not the singer for today’s CP so I time traveled back to last weeks spring scents, since the weather is actually springlike today. Wearing two small spritzes of BF Au Adela Narcisse which is about as floral and springlike as can be. I love the soft smooth dry down of this one more than the very floral opening.

Drinking my second cuppa and watching everyone walk by giving my rig a sneer and serious side eye. I’m living in the “No RV Parking” zone again, so we’ll see if I get a visit from the keepers of the peace. “This aggression will not stand, man!” ☮️

Today’s cp was difficult for me. Although I’m a fan of Astrud, nothing in my collection spoke to me either of her music or Brazil. And, except for an occasional summer wearing of vintage Sand & Sable, I must admit that tuberose is my #1 most disliked fragrance note and one I avoid, so not a Fracas fan.

But I found a never-tried sample of YR Plein Soleil – tuberose, ylang-ylang, sandalwood, and cardamom – and that is my SOTD. I think that tuberose lovers might find this a nice, light daytime scent. For me it’s just ok, as the tuberose note lasts all the way to the bottom and that’s all my nose can smell.

‘Plein soleil’ translates to ‘full sun” and nicely matched our weather this morning, but clouds will be increasing all day and we’re in for rain thru Tuesday at least. Got all my Easter grocery shopping done yesterday so I can slowly get ready for Sunday. Looking forward to seeing my teenage grandkids; I miss those days when they were little and spent overnight visits with Grandma. I keep Easter pretty simple and, thanks to Honey-Baked Ham and a new awesome Polish deli near me, this is the easiest holiday for me to prep for. Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead and whichever holiday you celebrate! 🐰 🐥 🌷

Vintage Halston! You smell amazing! I can remember the day I bought my bottle all those years ago. I don’t have it anymore but I do have a more recent version now.

      Enjoy your chocolate!

I find it reassuring to find someone else for whom tuberose doesn’t work well. I, too, changed my scent tonight to Balmain Vent Vert, an early Spring favorite of mine.

    Happy Friday Everyone!💐

I’m in my favorite tuberose, Tubéreuse Criminelle. Of course I have no idea how Astrud would have felt about the prominent menthol note but I like to think she’d appreciate this daring take on tuberose.

Making a huge batch of chicken soup today from several partial rotisserie chickens I’ve had in the freezer. It’s quite an undertaking but it always tastes so good when it’s done😋

Do you add anything to the soup other than the partial rotisserie chickens?

I have to confess that I dislike touching chicken, especially raw. I saw on Instagram that one can buy a whole rotisserie chicken, place the whole thing in a thick plastic bag, pound it with a tool that is strong enough but not too strong (maybe the flat edge of a meat pounder?) and voila, a much easier way to debone a chicken.

I would worry about bone shards and fragments in the chicken meat using that method.

I am also not a big fan of handling chicken, but I do like the rotisserie chickens. When I buy one, I take off the legs, thighs, breasts, and wings, then toss the rest into the freezer. When I have two or three, I put them in a pot to make chicken soup–add water, onion/carrot/celery/garlic/herb bundle, cover with water and simmer for an hour or two. Good stuff

That’s what I do too. It’s so good! Occasionally, I cook udon noodles separately and add them to the soup (when I serve it, so they don’t get mushy)

Well, one of the two places for final interviews turned me down last night.
    Black Cashmere for the day.
This is NOT how I planned out this year so far.

Different positions for sure but we had a silver medalist program where the company had already interviewed you and would leverage that interview for another position. Would you be able to see if there is another position that may come up?

Fracas edp today, and once again as I wear it it just seems pleasant. I have the Fashion Fragrances and Cosmetics version, so Fracas lovers shout out if that is a failed reformulation. I do have an older mini of the parfum that I like more. I could see that having that magic some feel as they sniff.

It’s been raining on and off today, plus it’s chilly outside. Neither Teflon kitty nor I are fans.

SOTD = Guerlain Terracotta Le Parfum. Very happy to have this in The Perfume Stash, thanks to NancyLeandros! It has loads of white flowers plus feels tropical, which is what I think of when I hear “The Girl From Ipanema”.

Oh dear, early spring has some challenging weather. I no longer get along with Terracotta for some reason, I’m all about Nuxe Prodgieux now but glad you are enjoying it.

Spring is usually volatile, no matter where you are in the States. Does that hold true in the UK?

I shouldn’t grumble too much about the rain. Every drop of moisture gets this part of Colorado further away from drought conditions. The only area that is now considered abnormally dry is the southwestern corner.

Thanks lillyjo! I can’t really smell the Terracotta, though. I don’t think that perfume likes this weather either…

Sun is supposed to return tomorrow, which will help motivate me to get more things done.

No perfume for me today since my husband got us reservations at a Michelin starred restaurant and they recommend no strong scents. I feel a little naked.

We were in the Dallas area this weekend so I managed to get in a couple of hours at The Scent Room. I miss being able to go to a niche perfume store and do lots of sniffing. Bought Sensual Dreams and thought about getting Wabi Sabi

Hunting for my Fracas sample revealed that the Robert Piguet sample set I ordered in January went missing in the mail in February. 😞 That I didn’t keep track of it tells you I’d been ordering too many samples!

So I’m not CP compliant in Floranilla from Maison Tahiti, a recent gift with purchase sample. If you like vanilla that isn’t straight up bakery vibes, this one is very interesting. Floral notes, osmanthus, a touch of myrrh.

Craving some Thai food tonight, so I will venture into the rain.
