Wednesday scent of the day 3/27

Posted by Robin on 27 March 2024 188 Comments

Happy Wednesday! It’s also International Whisk(e)y Day and World Theatre Day. Birthdays: Edward Steichen, Ben Webster and Sarah Vaughan. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Fendi Theorema, because pyramus wore it yesterday.

Reminder: 3/29 is Astrud Gilberto's birthday. Wear Robert Piguet Fracas (her favorite) or wear a fragrance that fits her music, or ?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

In Gendarme Rage today: I won’t say it’s misnamed, exactly, but it’s really just a standard spicy amber scent, not particularly vicious. I like it fine.

How would rage smell, I wonder? Smoky?

Fiery, I think: red pepper, carnation, cinnamon, ashes and smoke, some feral oakmoss at the end.

“Gendarme Rage” is seriously ironic anyway…what a bad name.

    Hello.
    Sotd is TF Myrrhe Mystere.
Made myself tres leches pancake for breakfast. Milk in batter and topped with condensed milk and whipped cream. So so good. Oh, do we count butter as a leche, if so, I think its cuatro!

I don’t count butter as leche. Your pancakes sound good, though! Lately I’ve been making sweet potato waffles and pancakes to get through the sweet potato glut we always seem to have around.

Day 5 of incense in the last drops of my full bottle of Tauerville Incense Flash. Sad that it was discontinued, but I have many incense perfumes that I love and enjoy, so I will not miss it.

I had a good night sleep last night, so I feel much better today. I am taking the rest of the week off starting tomorrow. I need to decompress and relax a bit. For now, coffee and a cornbread muffin.
    Happy Wednesday! 🌻

I went with Rose Anonyme this morning to cover/enhance the lingering Kâshan Rose I put on at bedtime last night. Rose is a difficult note for me, and I don’t know what possessed me to wear KR last night — I find it disruptive rather than restful, and I should probably swap it away the next chance I get. For me, rose needs to be a supporting cast member, not the lead. On another note (hah!), further progress will be made in the water-damaged garage and laundry room today as the wallboard is up and ready for the texturizer guys allegedly coming today. After that it’s paint and drying time, and then I get my laundry equipment back! Temporarily, because the laundry room floor has weeks to go before it gets fully repaired, but still!

No, luckily my folks have an apartment reasonably close to me (in an assisted living facility) and I’ve been doing laundry there while also picking up their mail once or twice a week and just generally checking on things for them. They decamp to warmer climes in winter so the apartment is empty except for my visits.

SheriG yay on the progress! I have scents like you describe too that I find ‘turbulent’ to wear at night to bed but I love wearing during the day. And vice versa. Last night I pulled out my very low Perfect Veil from Sarah Horowitz. A soft skin musk that is so soothing at bedtime. So intriguing how perfume can skew mood.

I like it best layered with SL Cuir Mauresque, but it’s fine by itself too … just not at bedtime. Paracelsus is the only rose-centric perfume I can think of offhand that works for me under any circumstance whatsoever. Thanks again for introducing me to it!

Another rainy day with the addition of some thunder storms. Yeehaw!

I’m wearing Bvlgari Omnia because I like it and so does everyone else.

We were honored with a visit from the head honcho last evening! He made a big to do about the bulk candy he brought in (and then took away) as a big “thank you” to staff, which segued nicely to his talk about shortage of funds and inability to find nurses to work at this hospital. And, while we aren’t as poor as some other hospitals, we really need to tighten the belt. Which then segued into the “anonymous” employee poll which showed satisfaction levels went up from 52% to 61% and what a great improvement! Then the really exciting news that “we are adding beds so we can help more patients” with an approximately 2 million dollar renovation!! I wanted to ask “How are you going to staff that since you have an entire unit closed due to lack of personnel at this time?” But, I was just too tired to care. Do these people believe the %+=# they spew? 🙄

I’m in my truck waiting for it to heat up watching this poor landscaper mow the grass in the middle of an absolute downpour. Why?

Hope the weather is better wherever you are! 🌞

Wow. Can’t say I am surprised. Big hospital here is opening up yet another large ICU. Staff is already stretched thin enough. Don’t these administrators realize that they have to multiply the ancillary services like radiology and dialysis because all these very sick patients use those services. Plus they are housing lots of adults in old areas of the children’s ER for days and days and those rooms have no bathroom. Wouldn’t it make sense to address that first?

jalapeño, I’m just so over it. I don’t know how I’ll even make it five short weeks. I keep telling myself “You need the money so pull up your big girl pantries and get it done!” The problem is money has never been a motivator for me. I wish it was but it just isn’t. Money tends to be a big turn off, which sounds ridiculous, I know, and I probably should clarify that by saying what I abhor is what money DOES to people. Really, makes them unrecognizable and ugly. 👎🏼

Oh my! It had been sitting on top of one of my perfume surfaces and I keep thinking when am I going to wear it?I’ve worn it before. Today was the day and 💖!

I went back to the place that charged me a $1 automatic tip and I saw where one could in fact choose $0 or other tip amount. I decided to leave the $1 tip as that made sense for what I ordered.

In other news, I may keep my Peacock subscription. I will decide by April 20. If you are so inclined, although I haven’t been*, here’s how to set your preferences for more customized recommendations. P.S. Not sure if you can get to the article as it’s from WSJ and I couldn’t find the gift link.

Glamour seems to have been running a lot of perfume articles lately, and while most of them look dull and mainly commercial, this one struck me as more interesting. It’s about increasing diversity among perfumers, and the search for “identity perfumes.” I think the article misses a lot of important points (e.g., what about different histories of scent usage and creation in India or the Middle East or Japan?), but some of the people named were new to me. https://www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/gallery/diversity-in-perfume

    Hello all!

I’m in vintage Yvresse today, one of my perhaps top ten (easily top 20), and one I’ve bought more bottles of than I should. I can’t run out! My bottle(s) of the extrait are in storage and I’ve been missing it today.

Got my organic chemistry test grade back, and while I wouldn’t say I’m pleased with a C, I did get the highest grade (by a pretty high margin) in the class. Luckily this professor is pretty liberal with extra credit, so I think I’ll still be able to do well in the class!

    Have a great day everyone.

Fantastic news, Coumarin. All your hard studying is paying off. And I’d definitely go by the high scorer metric more than the actual number grade. You rock! And you rock in Yvresse too. So pissy that Champagne made them change the name.

Listen, that’s a GREAT accomplishment! Sometimes that letter grade is just a bunch of hooey. I don’t think I’ve EVER heard anyone refer to organic chem as a walk in the park. If this was your preferred elective, I can’t even imagine what courses you decided against…🙀 I think going back to college as an adult, especially if you’ve been away from scholastics for a period of time, is a brave and bold choice. If I was your professor you’d give a straight up “A” for Absolutely Amazing! 😉

Organic chem was probably THE hardest course I took in college. IIRC, I had to take it 3 times before I passed.

And I was a Chemistry Major, no less.

      Congratulations on the high score!

It is not a joke at all! I’m in Ochem 2 this semester, actually, and I can’t tell if it’s worse or easier than 1!

Chemistry is actually my major too, though I’ve heard physical chemistry is even harder. I don’t have any easy classes from this summer on (when I’m taking Bio 2.)

There is a guy in my hood who walks a bulldog and I often see him strolling past and my dog likes his so we’ll stop to let them sniff and he is often smoking but I also catch big whiffs of cologne that seem like niche or something fancy and varies from day to day. He wears black nail polish and has tattoos so niche perfume seems right in that wheelhouse. I have to screw up the courage to compliment him and ask him what he’s wearing.

Fille de Berlin for me today, just because. Another rainy day here, and I’m not looking forward to the long weekend…two weeks of spring break and then a 4-day weekend are too much. At any rate, at least we do have a rental car now, and the insurance will cover it for about 3 weeks. Now we just need to get the broker focused on looking for a car with the features we want, rather than pushing a 2010 Lexus that may well be a good deal and may last forever, but still…is older than the car we’re replacing. Sigh.

Rainy day sisters! Are you not able to get a lump sum from the insurance company and go pick out your own replacement vehicle? Is the broker involved as a convenience to save your family time and aggravation? As for spring break, it’s in full swing here, too. I tried to find a place to go to get out of this town on days off and everything is booked solid. 👎🏼

We will get a lump sum — not sure how much yet, but they’re supposed to get back to us in 5-10 days. Our car was 10 years old, though, so I’ll have to kick in to buy something newer.

The broker is someone we (and friends) have used to buy cars in the past. I prefer to buy used, but it’s a hassle because neither my spouse nor I are into cars. The broker loves cars, knows mechanics and dealers, etc., so he’s happy to go out and find something that’s in good condition. He’s a HUGE Toyota / Lexus fan, because they’re extremely reliable and last for a long time — I knew that going in. I just have to get him pointed towards something newer.

Oh, I see! That makes sense for sure. I’ve always been afraid to buy used for that exact reason. At one point I was looking at a used van (this was before I bought my chevy van) that was already built out as an RV. I called a local mechanic to see if I could bring it in and pay him to go over it looking for any big issues because I know nothing about cars either! I hope he finds something you like that’s affordable and mechanically sound. 🚙

Yep. While the car was totalled, I don’t think he was actually hit that hard, not dead on, because the airbags didn’t deploy. The thief being chased hit another car, which then hit him, and didn’t come directly on (though the front of the car was taken off), and also then scraped onto the driver’s side door. He was surprised by the whole thing but wasn’t hurt.

I’m in another by Maison Anonyme today, L’Immortel. It’s not my favorite, but at least now I’m in the dry down which is mostly sandalwood. I couldn’t get enough of their Pale Fire yesterday though and think I’ll buy a bottle once I finish my evaporated travel spray.

We had a fun night out last night going to dinner and a concert. We went to a 24 hour diner in out neighborhood that we hope stays in business forever. A lot of restaurants have closed in our neighborhood in the last year and even more in the prior 2-3 years partly due to covid. New restaurants are opening too, but it’s sad to lose so many that have been neighborhood in staples for many years. So we’ve resolved to try and remember to eat at this diner every few months. I had a toad-in-the-hole breakfast burger and hash browns. 🤤 Note that it’s also known as egg in a basket or egg in a hole.

I’m very tuberose adverse, but I keep trying. Today for the CP I fished out my sample and put on two drops of Lutens’ Tubereuse Criminelle because I like the menthol top and the drydown has that syrupy Lutens base that makes the tuberose palatable for me. On Friday, I will wear Reva de Tahiti, which seems to be a scent for the tourist trade from the 90s? that has tiare, not tubey, but it reads like tuberose to me. It also has that mentholated topnote of the Lutens. Black Narcissus wrote about it in his blog some years back. I really wonder which perfumer made this and whether it inspired Sheldrake/Lutens

I had a coolant hose on my car fail yesterday, so today my brother was replacing it with a new one. Glad that happened in my parking lot and not while I was driving on the Interstate!

SOTD = commando, except for Korres Grecian Gardenia body butter on my shins. I wish I could get more of this, especially since I have some Grecian Gardenia showegel en route!

Oohh I bet that shower gel is nice. Yay for being in the parking lot and for your brother!
Oh.. I’ve been meaning to tell you, my dog loves to stretch out by the heat vent. It makes me think if your kitty. Lol.

LOL on your dog and the heat vent! Teflon kitty can’t do that anymore, since the heat vents in my apartment are in the ceiling.

She spends a lot of time on her kitty cat heating pad. Or my lap, if she sits still enough. A fidgety cat is not fun!

I wish Korres still made their Mastic Showergel. It was a lovely incense scent.

        And cheaply, too!

My brother admitted he knew that hose was sketchy. He just wasn’t expecting it to fail as quickly as it did.

Heh, having a 30-plus year old ride means that it will require more maintenance.

Here’s an update on my BiL…
He is conscious now and improving. It looks likely that he will get to keep his right leg but will require many skin graphs. They are not yet sure if he will ever get off the dialysis.
I was feeling perfumey today so wore Jil Sander #4.

Glad your brother-in-law had some good news. I hope he continues to improve.

Some days I love a perfumery scent!

So glad to hear that your BIL is conscious now.

Don’t mean to be a Debbie Downer, but amputees require specialized care. I saw this with my friend who ended up having her lower leg taken off due to diabetes complications. It took a long time for her stump to heal properly. You and your sister should know this.

lillyjo, I’m sorry to hear he is having such a rough go. What a horrendous thing to go through! Such a huge life change foisted upon him so quickly. More than anything, I hope he keeps his fighting spirit stoked. Counseling might be a good adjunct to all his medical care. So many people who have cardiac events or similar life changing medical issues encounter clinician depression after, and it’s a huge struggle, especially for men who are often not really in tune with their emotional selves and aren’t comfortable asking for help. We’re rooting for him!

I’m so happy to hear he is improving. I know he has a long road ahead. I am keeping him and his family in my prayers still.

Today I wore Ramon Monegal Impossible Iris; yesterday I was in La Curie Ossuary, both from lovely, generous NST ‘ers.

Eris Parfums Mxxxxxxxxx today. OK, it’s only Mxxx. But it’s so good! We’ve been watching Northern Exposure (didn’t ever see it the first time around) and really enjoying it. It’s so funky with lots of topics that can be discussed at a deeper level. Is anyone else watching?
