Tuesday scent of the day 3/12

Posted by Robin on 12 March 2024 226 Comments

It's Tuesday and National Girl Scout Day. Birthdays: Elaine de Kooning, Jack Kerouac, Edward Albee. What fragrance are you wearing?

I've got Maya Njie Vanilj on one arm and Imaginary Authors A Whiff of Waffle Cone on the other.

Reminder: 3/15 will be Vanilla Friday...wear your bestest vanilla for spring (or fall, if you're in the southern hemisphere.) (This is a repeat from 2018, when we did it in January.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Phoenix teapot from Wedgwood ("A journey through the generations, Phoenix takes inspiration from the iconic Florentine, one of our oldest patterns. With 22-carat solid gold accents, hand-raised details and the majestic image of a phoenix soaring, this new collection is brought to life by skilled craftspeople at our home in England") is £1,325 at Wedgwood in Great Britain.

    Hello.
Sotd is TF Vanille Fatale 2024 version. I don’t think I have ever smelled the previous version. This one is a lightly smoked vanilla presented in an old fashioned wooden box. I like it. It has some complexity and depth, at the same time it smells quite TF, if he even has a signature.
The weather had been rainy, cold and miserable for the past 3 days. Then it’s dry, crisp and sunny all of a sudden. Definitely no complaints!

That TF does sound good. Much better than the plasticky Vanilla Sex.

I’m in the Frederic Malle Dries Van Noten scent, which I find to be beautiful. I don’t really get speculoos-more like honey and wood. I think we inheirited happy888cat’s weather-cold, gray, slightly gross out. At least it’s not snow.

Isn’t that strange-you have such a beautiful wide selection and this one bothered your allergies-I’m glad it wasn’t an across the board allergy. Sometimes perfumes rich in oakmoss sort of make my throat feel like it’s closing over-but I still wear them lol.

Vanilla day 2 and I’m in Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Café, which I think must be my favourite coffee scent ever, because it smells convincingly like the coffee I would drink if I still drank coffee — sweet and creamy with some bitterness up top — plus of course all that CSP vanilla.

IT’S FREAKING SNOWING TODAY!! 🤯😠 I was not mentally prepared for that.

I actually wore two vanilla scents today. Maison Margiela Whispers in the Library before shower – pleasant but a bit boring. Nice “cooking” vanilla with a dash of pepper. The drydown, with its woody notes, was more interesting – but you have to wait for it. It is a comfy uncomplicated scent, but I needed something more substantial for this weather.

So I am now in Shalimar EDP, enveloped in its luminous density. It feels good.

Not sure what’s normal for Ukraine, but in Quebec it can snow all the way into May. Snow has been recorded somewhere in Canada on every day in the calendar.

Depends of what part of Ukraine. Here, March snow is not really rare, but February was very mild and it was warm in early March, so I hoped that even if it gets colder, we at least won’t have snow.

I’m CP compliant in the venerable and unjustifiably extremely obscure L’Artisan l’Eau des Merveilleuses. Mango and vanilla, but not super sweet, it has almost a sharp edge to it. It might have been LE. Not sure when it was released, I picked it up about 25 years ago and have been rationing the last of it for perhaps longer than I should.
The bottle is gorgeous, too, fluted with round shoulders, rather than the more standard faceted bottles.

I have run across some very unusual L’Artisans over the years that I’ve never heard of and aren’t in the repertoire. I think they might have been very early essays and one-offs. and yes, in different bottles. I think one was greenish. One was brownish. They caught my eye because they had the familiar crown caps. I don’t have them anymore, I should have kept them at least for reference or to chart Jean Laporte developing his style. I do remember they were all well made, with what seemed like good naturals in a cologne base, and went in green/floral/herb directions.

I have a $400 Nordstrom gift card I have no idea what to do with, trying to decide if I want a bottle of the Benjoin in September or not. You could use the gift card to buy some essential stuff for your home ( bedding, cookware etc… and then use the money you were going to use on that kind of stuff for perfume. ( it’s a gift card loophole)

Taking a leaf from Hajusuuri’s book, I wore Vanailla Flash after my shower yesterday. Mostly, I get a boatload of spice, but I still like it and it’s aging well. Went with Shalimar MVP today since it’s now my favorite vanilla, though I did go on the Bay to see if I could find Vanilla Lace (my OG vanilla throughout my 20’s and 30’s) after all these years. That led me to realize I hadn’t be into a VS store in over 20 years, which led me to go online and see what their offerings are now, at least in the vanilla department. Which led me to realize it was a long time ago and I’m two years away from being a senior citizen. It went downhill from there…😆

The Girl Scouts got me last week even though I made a mental note to leave the grocery by the other door, which of course I forgot as soon as I stepped into the store. On the way out, before the door even closed behind me, they were on me! One of them promptly whipped out a switchblade and said “Buy a box or we’ll cut ya!” What’s a helpless old woman like me to do? I bought a box, of course! 😉

Ha! That’s good. Let me tell you, these scouts were business girls all the way. At one point, one of the girls lost interest and started skipping around and singing. The other one said, “Pay attention to your customer!” Yeah, like that. What a killjoy! The poor skipper-arounder was immediately crestfallen and hung her head in shame. Really, I mean, when did kids get to be this serious and bossy?! I felt like telling the poor girl to keep skipping cause you’re only young once.

Thin mints are definitely the most cookies for the dollar, so that’s all I usually buy anymore. Some of the fancy flavors have so few in the box!

According to a fragrantica search, fully half of what I own has a vanilla note. Even Bel Ami! I have to take my car in for an oil change and for a technician to figure out why my car and phone have stopped speaking to one another, so I’ll have to go with something relatively light — I’m thinking Ambre Narguilé.

Good luck! I have not set up the blue tooth / phone thing and I’ve had my car for 10 years. I’m a nervous Nellie so I can’t see myself being on the phone while driving.

It is very convenient if you have it programmed into your car. Completely hands free. I don’t use it that much, but when we travel somewhere and are on the road for a long time it is nice for the kids to be able to check up on us.

It’s fixed! Apparently bluetooth gets unpaired fairly easily, and there’s a neighborhood near where I go for pilates that has a higher than average occurrence of these unpairings. Grrr! But they gave me some tips on fixing the issue myself going forward. Plus they reset my car clock for daylight saving time and vacuumed the interior, so my baby is all refreshed. 😁

I’m wearing DSH Mata Hari. It includes vanilla in the notes, but why wouldn’t it? It’s one of those “kitchen sink” perfumes with a little bit of everything in it.
I was clobbered yesterday by the COVID booster for the very first time (I got one because I am considered “elderly” and travel a lot). None of the other injections have ever elicited chills, fatigue, and the most sore arm I’ve ever had. I went to bed early and feel better today except for a headache and the sore arm. I am hoping this means I had a robust immune response.

Oooh, sorry about the Covid booster. We are getting our booster next weekend before we go to North Carolina. I had a little headache once and chills once, but otherwise just a sore arm. I hope it’s mild for us this time around. It stinks to be 65 as you need to have this stuff done frequently. Oh, well.

I get sick with every COVID shot. The last one left me rigoring in bed with husband calling relatives for advice. But thankfully the effect lasts less than a day.

I am taking a trip in April and thinking of getting another shot, since my last one was in 2022. After having COVID last year, I am considering that feeling really bad for one day beats feeling moderately bad for 3-4 days.

Now I just have to find a day to sacrifice and I keep deferring . . .

Yes. But: do we REALLY think the accents are “22 carat solid gold”? To me that phrasing suggests that the handle and the spout are solid gold, and I would think that would make it even more expensive than it is. It looks to me like there is a gold overlay on the porcelain. Maybe I am misreading something (or maybe I am just really, really tired.)

Every week is Shark/Vanilla Week for me. 🦈🍨☺️

Today I am sampling Les Eaux Primordiales Vanille Supermassive. Strong, spicy vanilla so far…unisex and notes are below.

Yesterday I tested the rerelease of Ginger Biscuit. I probably tried it back w/ the first release but don’t remember it well. It’s nice but boy, it’s low sillage and pretty fleeting.

    Top: bergamot, elemi
    Heart: cinnamon, fir balsam, labdanum
Base: patchouli, vanilla, caramel, ambroxan, moss, white musks

Calvin Klein Truth and a cup of English Breakfast tea.

Truth is a fragrance that I am giving a second chance. I wore it last week and couldn’t wait to wash it off of me that night when I took a shower. It was so strong. Then this morning, I smelled it faintly on the sleeves of the shirt I wore when I last wore Truth, and it was wonderful.

Today, I sprayed it very lightly, and I am loving it so far 🙂

I’m in a sample of Ex Nihilo Gold Immortals. I’m surprised vanilla isn’t among the listed notes because I’m smelling it. Tonka and Amber are listed, so maybe those two are tricking my nose into finding vanilla.

Today’s tea is F&M Jubilee and I have thunked the tin. It is a good, tasty tea and I’m happy to be sipping it right now. But it is not particularly notable so I don’t plan on replacing it.

Amber has vanilla so you’re not imagining it.

“Gold Immortals” is a cool perfume name!

Tea of the day is the Snow Mountain tea from Vietnam which I learned about in the February 16 edition of Bois de Jasmin. I decided to splurge on an order from Victoria’s recommended tea seller in Germany. It is excellent, and my appreciation of tea keeps growing. SotD is Tocade, one of my long-time loves, and *yes* I love that bottle. I get amber, vanilla and rose. When I read it has freesia, I started to notice that too. Spring has sprung here, at least for today, and I’ve been outside quite a bit. The rest of the week’s weather looks good, too. Flowers and flowering trees are here.

I’m loving all your tea reports! My order of the Smith’s barrel-aged breakfast tea arrived, and I’ve had it a couple of times. I think I’ll need to have it a few more times to pick up on the nuances, but it’s very very smooth so far.

Tocade didn’t really work on my skin, but I still regret getting rid of that fun bottle!

Yes about smoothness. I just keep experimenting with brewing times, water temperature, and amount of tea leaves.

I tried Tocade in the fun bottle several years ago, and it was a disaster-level scrubber on me. Bottle porn can only go so far.

Glad you mentioned that. I was wondering if any NST’ers had tried WiG. I saw on Fragrantica that it got a lot of comparison votes.

IIRC, I liked Woman in Gold when I tried a sample. That one might still be in The Sample Stash.

Ha! Tocade does make a statement. But yeah, I have to like the perfume at least a little to keep a favorite bottle. (Looks at Miu Miu bottle.)

    SOTD = Pacifica Island Vanilla

A cheap thrill for sure and so good! 😍

I must have gotten this a long time ago at Target and it has aged very well.

I mentioned that the first session for my Civil Mediation Training was postponed with a date TBD. Self: how about the one for this coming Saturday. I called Customer Service and I was told that the Saturday class will be as scheduled. And then I thought that I should make sure. I emailed the person who informed us that the session was being rescheduled and she responded saying No session this Saturday as the whole thing was being rescheduled. I of course thanked her and strongly suggested that she let the entire class AND Customer Service know because CS DID NOT KNOW! I would seriously have been ticked off if I showed up and class was not in session. I hope the new schedule works for me and if not, I will get a refund including the penalty of $20 were I to opt out of taking the classes.

In a world where there a million ways to communicate, no one can be bothered anymore. I’ve talked to three people at my agency about the exact same thing and none of them knew anything about anything. What an incredible waste of time. Pretty soon I will just stop answering my phone or texting/emailing back all the people who ask the same dam* THING! Figure it out!! Did that come off a little snarky? Yeah? That’s exactly how I meant it! 😂

Looks like Pacifica has changed the bottles for their offerings at Target. I liked the cute little clear bottles much better.

Another snag in taking that mediation course? Or the same one?

I wore a judicious spritz of SDV for a day in the office today. I had a very nice lunch with a former boss, and a HUGE dose of office gossip. Quite a fun day! I also checked out that Normal Women book that Deva recommended last week, can’t wait to dive into it!

Oh, I hope you like it. The amount of research that went into it just boggles my mind. I was lucky enough to have a father who was extremely progressive given his culture and upbringing, and never confronted misogyny until I was an adult, or at least that’s when I first recognized it. Also, had a mother who was quite fiery and independent. I’m not squeamish, but some passages had me all discombobulated and I had go back to it later. Let us know what you think. 😊

Turns out I have a lot more perfumes with vanilla than I thought, based on a quick peek at all my full bottles. That’s without checking The Sample Stash. I will be spoiled for choice on Friday.

But I am about as far away from vanilla in perfume today as possible.

SOTD = vintage Cabochard, thanks to AnnE. Loving it!

Wearing Obvious Parfums Un Vanille which I initially wrote off as too plastic doll head but settles into a nice straight up vanilla. One of my 2 full bottles I bought in 2024 and trying to stick to my 3 bottle limit for the year.

Sometimes a little plastic doll head is enjoyable…so long as it’s under control.
