Friday scent of the day 3/1

Posted by Robin on 1 March 2024 199 Comments

Rabbit rabbit rabbit! Welcome to March. It's also Zero Discrimination Day. Birthdays: Frédéric Chopin, Lytton Strachey, Glenn Miller, Ralph Ellison, Robert Lowell, Harry Belafonte, Roger Daltrey. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance that will bring you peace, happiness or good luck for the month.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in the same thing I wore last year on 3/1: L’Artisan Jacinthe des Bois.

Reminder: 3/8 is International Women's Day... do what you like with the theme. Wear a perfume in honor of a woman who is important in your life or an important female historical figure, or wear a perfume by a female perfumer, or ? Suggested by Kanuka.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Hello, tgif and rabbit, rabbit, rabbit!
Sotd is Amouage Guidance. I am hoping the perfume gods will guide me through March with some blessing (and maybe through 2024? Here’s to hoping!).
Just spent some time talking to my father, well I say talked, but it’s pretty much him speaking 95% of the time. I love the man but he can really nag (sorry dad). But that just shows how much he cares?
Anyway, life-wise, made a huge bowl of potato salad that will last me a couple meals. I am trying not to think about the amount of mayo that went in to get it deliciously creamy…

I like the sound of your potato salad! I’m about go make a big batch of pasta salad for tonight (it will also last us a couple of meals) with fresh tortellini, chicken, broccoli, and orange bell peppers: I love creamy dressings but unfortunately my husband does not, so it’s low-fat bottled dressing for us. I’ll be thinking mayonnaise-y thoughts, though. Enjoy your salad! I know I would.

Pasta salad is so yummy! I haven’t made it in quite some time. Maybe have a bottle of “normal” dressing by the table when you serve your salad so you can make those thoughts come true 😉😈😈

    Rabbit rabbit rabbit!

I’m wearing something that always brings me happiness, CSP Amour de Cacao, the ultimate comfort scent. It’s one of the first niche scents I ever bought, in the 100mL aluminum canister with the turquoise print, and it sounds like it’s still about a quarter full, so I hope I have years of happiness ahead of me yet.

Saw this and thought of you. Can’t believe that pre- reformulated ink is $300 on eBay . Maybe you have some of the original?

I think it won’t surprise you to learn that yes, I do have a bottle of the original. It’s a nice, serviceable dark-violet colour, nothing really extraordinary: I have more interesting purples in my collection. I don’t get the obsession with it except that it was limited-edition, which makes some people kind of crazy. I had the matching pen, too, but I sold it to someone who wanted it more than I did.

Would you recommend one or two deep purples? And do you have a favorite deep black? (I have an OLD bottle of Levenger Raven Black that is getting sediment-y and should probably be tossed before it clogs the one pen in which I use it. I’d like to try something else.)

I don’t really use black ink: blue-black is as close as I’m willing to come. I have a couple of black inks but they don’t get much love from me. Pelikan Brilliant Black is a pretty good one, and if you need a waterproof ink — say, for watercolour — then Sailor Carbon Black is what you want: it’s pigment rather than dye so it’s pretty waterproof.

As for purples, most of mine are mid-tone rather than deep, and almost all Diamine, which is probably the best ink brand out there — inexpensive, high-quality, saturated, reliable. Bilberry is my husband’s go-to ink, a lush blue-violet, and it’s fairly dark. I love Lilac Night (which leans blue) and Purple Dream (leans red) from their 150th Anniversary collection, which more expensive per volume but the whole line is incredibly saturated and beautiful. (If you’re in the market for a dark dark blue, Regency Blue is breathtaking.) The Flower Collection contains two stunning purples, Iris (leans blue) and Pansy (a pure violet). If you’re in the UK or don’t mind the shipping charges, Cult Pens has a private line of Diamine inks, the Deep Dark collection: Deep Dark Purple is very, very dark, almost black, and might be just the thing for you.

I could go on (oh, could I), but that’ll get you started.

Thank you, Pyramus, for these terrific recs! Replying to myself since we’ve exhausted the levels of the thread. I will definitely check out Diamine. (Alas, I’m not in the U.K.)

So, this scent is so weird that it gives me happiness. Mal-Aimé is basically a fleabane scent, with erigeron in top, middle and base notes. It is very green an aromatic, which I love.

You made me look up Mal-Aimé, erigeron and then inula! Thank you for inspiring curiosity. Parfum d’Empire certainly makes fascinating fragrances. To make an ode to unloved weeds into a perfume sounds interesting. Thanks for sending me on a perfume hunt. I want to smell the weeds, too 😁

It is a weird scent, and I love it! Just looked up erigeron as well. Wow, there are about a hundred different varieties, so cool. I think I’ll take one of them and think of it as seaside daisy instead of fleabane. 🌸

    🐇🐇🐇!

Wearing Amouage Reflection Woman. No matter how many times I try Reflection, it is definitely not for me. It is so similar to DKNY Be Delicious, which was always a scrubber on me.
I am going to try again all my Amouage scents and whatever doesn’t work for me, will go to the goodbye pile. Amouage is a brand that has always been so difficult for me wear. Only very few are favorites.

Having my second cup of coffee and a slice of ice cream bread.
    Happy Friday! ☕️

I am glad that I got mostly decants and samples, so at least the damage to my wallet was not so painful. I only have full bottles of Lyric and Honour. I am definitely going to do some purge and keep only the ones that I really enjoy wearing.

Yes, super easy to make and delicious. You can use any ice cream flavor you want. Just to clarify that it has a bread texture, not a cake texture, as many people wrongly expect.

I have never heard of ice cream bread, but it certainly is easy enough to make. I might have to try that. So, would it be kind of the texture of banana bread?

I usually use 3 cups of ice cream if I want to get the texture of a banana bread. It is a very flexible recipe, so you can always play with the ingredients.

Remembered my rabbits today. SOTD will be Amouage Gold, once I get through the teen’s orthodontist appointment and a massage for me. Gold at the end of the rainbow, also this is probably my luckiest blind buy. Got it for half off many years ago, when Amouage changed the bottles.

    Hello all!

I didn’t get my rabbits in as right at midnight I got up and went into the kitchen. Jicky jumped up and started dancing around expectantly in front of me and I jokingly asked, “What?” It was 12:03AM. Oh well!

I’m in a throwback scent that I couldn’t resist buying this month: Mac’s Naked Honey. Anyone remember this? It’s a beautiful linden with a bit more honey than most would dare. It reminds me of another gone-but-not-forgotten, Tauer’s Zeta. I just love this style of fragrance.

    Have a great Friday, everyone!

I remembered the Rabbits! And I’m in Chanel EDC, which I just love. Lasts forever on me.

Hard to know how to dress-was plus 11 yesterday, minus 15 today and the wind is scorchingly cold. Had perfect drive for half my drive to work-saw grey cloud in front of me-raging blizzard conditions for last 20 km of the drive. Pulp truck determined to make a third lane right up the middle of the two lanes. I can’t wait for the divided highway. TGIF!

I remembered to 🐇 twice — once just after midnight and again at dawn — so I have extras if anyone needs them. I chose Carthusia 1681 for the CP. It doesn’t get a lot of attention here, but I find it very soothing and beautiful … and those qualities are things I’m going to need throughout this month as we fight the good fight with our insurers and slowly get our house and garage repaired and reassembled.

I’m wearing La Dolce Vita which always makes me happy because it reminds me of my son, and all the movies we have watched together. Two days ago we watched Nibelungen, a five hour, Fritz Lang , yellow-toned 1924 silent movie based on Siegfried…the scene where Siegfried kills the dragon was terrible . The power of movies are amazing. Even though the dragon was clearly a puppet , it made me almost cry. The dragon was just drinking from a pool of water and minding its own business when it gets stabbed in the neck. Sob!

You smell great, I get a lot of vanilla from Jersey but it’s the EDP, perhaps you have the EDT? Either way a delightful scent.

T-minus three weeks until hip surgery, so I’m in need of all the peace, happiness, and good luck the universe can throw me! It’s yet another dreary grey day here and my spirits are flagging, but I went with Seville a l’Aube today to ring in the new month with something beautiful, uplifting, sweet, and tender.

I went for my most comforting and most uplifting scent: Paris YSL. From a very old mini of I think fleur de parfum. Perfume regrets I have is never getting that bottle of Paris extrait de parfum that I saw somewhere online around 15 years ago. Mind you, I have plenty of Paris to last me several lifetimes, but I’ve never even tried the parfum and I would have loved to.

It has become much thinner. Once I realised the change, I started hoarding older bottles. I think some of the damascones in it have been restricted or banned. Mind you, it’s still recognisable, but it’s no longer that over the top, intense rose it used to be. I love March’s take on it here: http://perfumeposse.com/2009/02/15/well-always-have-paris/

That is such a generous thing to do, good for you! I’ve got both EDT and EDP stashed away, and mad though it seems, whenever I wear it, it makes sense to have done so. I’ve been wearing this since the eighties and I don’t want to let go.

I had to read over that birthdays list twice. Wow, all those musicians! Think what a great band they’d have had in Heaven! I’m just imagining Chopin getting down with all the others!

Still feeling perfume slumpy. I am trying out a pretty springy floral today, OJ Champaca. Wow, it really smells like soap. Yesterday I tried some Koala–I thought to myself, koalas are soft and gentle, this might work. It was ok, but it also smelled like soap.

Funny to think of koalas smelling like soap. I was thinking that Zoologist could do a Whale perfume with lots of ambergris, would be nice.

Koala has eucalyptus which is probably why the scent of soap lingered. I am not sure what it was about or in Champaca. I may just have soap on the brain.

Thanks for asking about my paper. The talk I gave last week was a cut version due to the session’s time limits. I only discussed Oldboy but in a longer version also talk about his other two films from the same group (Mr Vengeance, Lady Vengeance). I’m still writing the sections on those two films. Finally got all the various pieces of my life back together!

As far as luck is concerned I’ll paraphrase Neil deGrasse Tyson in that how lucky am I to be alive at ALL? Millions and millions of reasons why I shouldn’t be here, (including my mothers two miscarriages before me) wherever “here” is, and yet I am here! A witness to the mysteries, cruelties, beauties, and intricacies of this world. I think that’s the lucky jackpot, and everything else is icing on the cake.

I’m reading another Daniel Mason book, a collection of short stories called “A Registry of My Passage on the Earth.” So far my favorite stories are The Other Dr. Service about a physician in the 1800’s who begins to have what he calls “seizures.” He discovers another Dr Service living in his head that takes over without warning, disappears the same way, and apparently is better at everything than the original Dr Service. He tries to communicate with the Other by leaving notes and questions in his clothing pockets, but he never gets an answer. These scraps just annoy his wife, who also seems to prefer the Other Dr Service. The entire story takes place in his head and it just masterfully written! Is it schizophrenia? Is it multiple personality disorder? What exactly is going on?! The author is a psychiatrist so I’m pretty sure he knows all the ins and outs, or at least what can be know in present day, of the human brain.

The other one I’m loving takes place just before Darwin’s “Origin of Species” is written. A “bug collector, species man” is gadabouting in the tropics and has a brief penpal relationship with Darwin, the last of which he posits the foundation of evolution before evolution even was. He is in distress because after that letter, Darwin ceases communication, and he feels it must be because Darwin thought him so stupid, uneducated, and fanciful, that he (Darwin) can no longer bear to waste his time writing the Bug Collector. But then we realize Darwin took the bug collector’s theory and ran with it. Darwin is a thief of ideas!

Anyway, both of these stories are written in the language of the time, narrated by a fabulous voice that just transports you there, wherever there is. Again, I’m “reading” the audiobook. The best author I’ve come across in years, and he’s young to boot, so most likely he has hundreds of books in him to look forward to.

I’m wearing ELDO Fils de Dieu and it’s so creamy and just flat out lovely. I might have over-sprayed. Oops! We’re off to the post office to see if my tag arrived, which would be very lucky indeed! Happy friYAY!!

Apple, pear and yogurt smoothie, followed by carrots and butter beans soup from the supermarket.

My good luck perfume today is the very green, very strange Cacharel Eden, I picked the modern one, more transparent, my vintage is more patchouli-heavy, both good, and tonight it’s an opium flanker Poésie de Chine, probably lucky too in its red bottle.

It is one case where I don’t hesitate to say the current formulation, (well, 4 or 5 years ago, time flies) is still as strange and wonderful, but do sample it, you may hate it, it’s very polarising, definitely unique.

Trying M. Micallef Ô Féminin today. Very pretty and in the LDBS/Sintra family w/ lots of petitgrain, bergamot and orange blossom in the opening so far.

Yesterday I tried Angel Elixir and it’s as lackluster as the reviews led me to believe. I commented in yesterday’s thread at the end of the day..to think highly paid people at L’Oréal developed it, got buy in and then released is quite sad. Maybe some of us NSTers should start a niche perfume incubator company and come up w/ a better Angel flanker ourselves. We could also provide special counsel to companies like Coty who make the decision to introduce a 14 count perfume line, boast that they use 30 hr. aromachemicals (like it’s a selling point) and retail for $290 bucks a pop. 🤣

I went with vintage No. 19 EDT because I was lucky to find this partial bottle at Goodwill years ago for either $30 or $40. And because it’s a perfect perfume to usher in spring this month, and well, it’s just been too long since I’ve worn it. It’s been a pretty busy week with work and I wanted something easygoing to accompany me while I had morning meetings and a hopeful afternoon of productivity.

As a nature lover and gardener, what brings me peace and happiness (and hope despite our troubled world!) at this time of year are all the little green shoots coming up and the knowledge that the earth beneath is alive with life we cannot yet see. Thus, my favorite scent notes for March are both galbanum and patchouli, and what could be more apt than a fragrance that contains both of those notes as well as a caramel note for that warm, nurturing embrace still needed on those chilly, damp mornings – even its name is perfect – Dame Perfumery Earth Mother, my chosen SOTD for today’s cp. ❤️

Like so many of you, it’s been a wild, wacky week of weather, and a scary one, too. Tuesday night there were 11 tornadoes in Illinois, 10 deemed to be in my area. Home alone because Mr. Laila is skiing in Colorado, I got everything ready and when a tornado warning was issued for my immediate area and our sirens went off, I attempted to get 😻😻😻 cats into 3 carriers to seek shelter in the basement. After numerous failures, 1 cat made it downstairs with me, the heaviest one, causing me to miss the last step. But, luckily, no harm done, and after half an hour the all-clear was given and we made it safely back upstairs. Having missed all the excitement, Mr. Laila will be home tomorrow.

I’m looking forward to a weekend that’s supposed to be beautiful, warm and 🌞. I hope yours is a good one, too!

Scary times in tornado alley. I remember one year we were on vacation and boarded our dogs at a nearby kennel. Came home to find out three tornados converged almost right on top of the kennel, damaging the building and some dogs, including ours, escaped and were running wild. Luckily, they were all caught unharmed. But those skies right before…🫣 I’m glad you didn’t injure yourself when you missed that last step, that could have been bad considering Mr. Laila wasn’t home.

Oh, wow, talk about scary! That was some scary experience you had! I have a small low-ceilinged basement – it’s really just a cellar with a narrow winding staircase, not the easiest to get down even w/o carrying a heavy cat in a cumbersome carrier. I hope to not have to repeat that.

Oh what a scary story about the tornado siren, too many cats, a heavy cat, and one step missed! That’s a true nightmare. I’m glad you’re ok. I grew up with tornado warnings/sirens and know how scary they can be.

I know you have cats so I know that you would probably also feel guilty about the two you left upstairs! With the warning sirens going off I just couldn’t stay upstairs any longer.

Delighting in Alien edp. I had errands to run, and no time to dither over SotD. Voila – there in my purse was my metallic purple Alien Perfuming Brush, a little oddity that most of you have seen I am sure. I just push the “clicker” and dabbed on the highly scent gel. I hope everyone has as much fun this month with their perfume hobby as I did this morning. The Alien sent little signal-whiffs as I checked off my errands and then had lunch with a friend. I topped off with some edt when I got home. Another treat today was finally tasting cotton candy Peeps – I did hope for more cotton candy flavor, but they were very soft and fresh.

Never saw one of those perfume pens IRL, but Sephora had them for a while on their website.

I’m wearing Holy Water by La Via Del Profumo. It has been my go to scent for stressful times; it’s grounding and makes me feel at peace even in the middle of a storm. And it has all the notes I love: sandalwood, frankincense, rose and citrus, beautifully blended. I reach for it often, and carry a small spray in my bag in case I need it.

    Those rabbits look ANGRY!

I did rabbit at oh-dark-thirty this morning, when I briefly woke up to turn down the heat. I had to ask Teflon kitty to let me up first, though.

Got over to my brother’s place to get the radiator replaced this afternoon. It was pretty cool watching him take out the old one and fit the new one in. After the job was done to his satisfaction, he grinned and said “I’ll bill you later.” I did need to get more coolant, since what he had left in the bottle was not enough to fill the new radiator up.

SOTD = Delta of Venus, thanks to springpansy. This was one of the samples she gave me yesterday. It smells very much like another perfume I have encountered in the past. I will go digging thru my Sample Stash to see if I have what I think matches up.

I wore Delta of Venus today in the hopes that I will be able to have more NST meetups in the future. I have greatly enjoyed hanging out with everyone I have met thus far.

My brother and I had discussed this before I even moved out to Colorado. He said that he was willing to work on my vehicle, but I was going to pay for the parts. Which I think is more than fair.

Glad you got your radiator taken care of! The rabbits do look mean! For owls, I refuse to buy the ones that look realistic because they scare me.

Today is Zoologist Chipmunk, because my FB just arrived. It’s cozy and comforting. And I will choose to make chipmunks a symbol of prudence and prosperity as they busy themselves collecting nuts for the future.

Funny, I considered Chipmunk for this week because I discovered the acorn is considered a symbol of luck in Norse culture. I need to retry my sample soon. I also like you made Chipmunk fit the CP. 😃
