Tuesday scent of the day 2/27

Posted by Robin on 27 February 2024 153 Comments

It's Tuesday and International Polar Bear Day, Pokémon Day, World NGO Day and Anosmia Awareness Day. Birthdays: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Steinbeck, Mildred Bailey, Dexter Gordon and Elizabeth Taylor. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm commando for an exercise class so I'll pick something later today. Tea at the moment is The Art of Tea Rose Black.

Reminder: On 3/1, Rabbit rabbit rabbit! It's March. Wear a fragrance that will bring you peace, happiness or good luck for the month.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Today I’m in Mugler Angel Parfum de Cuir, which answers the interesting question, “What would it smell like if you poured a lot of Angel onto a well-worn black-leather jacket and then wrung it out?” Leather and an extra dose of really dirty patchouli render it almost unrecognizable, but it’s Angel all the same, one of the best flankers they ever did.

Good for you, Robin, to get to an exercise class. I have my gym stuff for tonight.

I’m in SL Fleurs de Citronnier, which is really beautiful. I love delicate scents, sometimes, and this is delicate but has presence. The air still smells like snow but we’re having some warmth during the say and the snow is melting. It was a tough month so sun and warmth are gratefully received.

Happy 92nd to my favorite classic screen queen, La Liz herself. I am still making my way thru her latest biography, I am taking my time with it.
I just read that Taylor’s estate just launched a fashion line with her image, with some proceeds going toward her Aids research foundation. Casual stuff, like tshirts and such.
    Scent yesterday was Bon Bon.

I went to Christie’s for the pre-auction of her various collections back in early 20-teens. It was a fundraiser for New York University. The tickets were relatively inexpensive, $100 IIRC, and it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Was it for her jewelry collection? And did you bid on anything? If I recall, the auction house Julien’s carried out the sale of her estate items after her passing, everything from apparel to artwork, furniture, costume jewelry, etc. You can still view the catalog listing online.

I am wearing Chanel Misia today. I stopped eating meat and i feel that the perfumes smell different on me.
I am back at work today and tomorrow after a hectic weekend.
Saturday was the day of a big event that I helped to organize and Sunday it was my birthday, I went to a brunch with my mom, sister, hubby and my lovely daughter.
I received the new Miss Dior as a gift from my sister.

Craving tuberose today since I sprayed Carnal Flower in a counter last weekend – inspired by Robin’s choice of scent. I remember very much loving this one years ago at the start of my perfume journey but thinking it was a too loud for me, so I got En Passant instead. It turns out I continue to love it!

So until I come across a well priced small decant of second hand bottle, I am making due with Vamp a New York and Moon Bloom. VaNY is very bubblegum and playful, Moon Bloom is tuberose distilled, gorgeous in summer but in cold weather I find it too indolic at the opening.

Wearing Phi today. As lovely as always- warm, cozy, with just a hint of spring in the floral notes.

Was up until 3am listening to another book by Daniel Mason, this one called The Winter Soldier. So good! So sad! So wonderful. So devastating.

It’s about a Austrian baby doctor (baby as in “new” not as in “tiny human”) who, during WWI is sent to a makeshift hospital in the Carpathian Mountains with the only “surgery” under his belt being an ear wax removal. The author is a physician so there’s no softening the blow of the reality of gangrene, louse infestations, typhus, amputations, etc. In a bombed out church, the nurse there teaches him how to do amputations. She has been doing them for the past two months because the previous surgeon went mad and disappeared, leaving no doctor to treat patients. It is (of course) a romance, and her fragrance of choice is the carbolic acid used to disinfect her hands. Lots of grim reality including the very beginnings of understanding the psychological impact of combat on the human psyche. Excellent but devastating.

Just when you think the ending will tidy things up, no. It’s chaos, disappointment, joy, love, forgiveness, and all the other human things all at once that make you feel off kilter, wondering how you survived to the end. But yes, very excellent!

One of my dogs is getting senile and has decided that he would quite like his dinner around 2.30am, and gets quite restless and whines until I get up around 5am. He is getting quite food obsessed but seems to forget that he has eaten, so whines for more. He also whines to go outside but once outside turns around to come back in. He’s such a beautiful dog and wonderful friend, and has good physical health though a bit stiff. I can still distract him by talking to him and patting him until he settles down. The point is, I had broken sleep and need a bit of perfume zap this morning. CDG Peppermint might do the treat. Sprocket is snoring next to me, dear old thing.

So sorry to hear about your dog’s state -so sad. Sending hugs to you both. A thought occurred to me; perhaps you could put a you-scented old t-shirt or something on his bed or wherever he likes to sleep? It might help to calm him.

My yellow crocuses are blooming already and I’m thinking about the approaching spring and flowers. I’m wearing Jo Malone White Moss & Snowdrop from my 9 ml bottle from a Christmas perfume set. To me is more of a winter into spring transitional fragrance due to the snowdrop (a little pretty flower which blooms that time of year) aspect.

I have a lots to report on the scent front, but have been busy with my parents visiting this week.

Thanks to a generous NSTer, I’ve been sampling Delta of Venus and Victoria (Frassai). I had quite high expectations for Delta of Venus, hoping that it would really remind me of Calyx which I wore in high school. And while it’s a fun perfume and I can detect a late ’80s/early ’90s vibe, it didn’t remind me much of Calyx and I won’t need more than a sample. On the other hand, I was unsure of Victoria since it has tuberose, which is hit or miss for me. Turns out, I like it quite a lot! It has an old school, heady perfume vibe with tropical white florals, but wearable and modernized with lychee. I would love a travel spray or decant of this.

I also managed to swing by a Lush store over the weekend. I tried the Sticky Dates body lotion. The lotion itself is quite nice, not oily and smells strong. BUT the scent is a bit much for me as a lotion, more cloying and sweet than the body wash. It reminds me of some old Laura Mercier body product, creme brulee something or another?
I did pick up the Posh White Chocolate and Rose body wash which is very nice! I think it was seasonal for Valentine’s. It smells heavenly and my only complaint is the price and it does not seem like the type of product that would go far.

I wasn’t impressed with Delta of Venus either. As to price of the fragrant products and their longevity, I have the same complaint for food at the grocery. I could have sworn that some product prices have gone up despite the amount of food shrinkage in the same package!

I find even the body wash too sweet, but I do love it mixed with lighter things. Thinking I could do the same with the lotion, mix it with my regular unscented lotion? But we’ll see if I get to Lush before it’s gone.

Wearing Bake today compliments of an oh-so-generous NSTer. 🥰

Finishing up deliverables this week for two big audits at work next week and things are going surprisingly smoothly. Wish me continued success that the entropy does not increase. 😆 AP Chemistry and, to a lesser extent, Jurassic Park always make me think of chaos theory. 🦕 🦖

I’ve been drinking more tea lately. Today was Smith Tea Barrel Aged Breakfast tea. I find that I don’t notice much nuance in taste (just a good, fresh, tea flavor), but there is a bouquet of floral-fruitiness that hovers around my face. It makes me understand why tea drinkers get committed. I like Smith’s Jasmin Pearl green tea, too. I’ve always like jasmine tea, and this one is very fragrant. I’ve been wearing No. 19 Poudre for the last few days. It seems to suit the season. I pushed the envelope, garden-wise, and planted some lettuce and beets today. I was surprised how friable the soil was, because we’ve had wet weather.

I did not know that, but I did learn that word from my gardening friend who is also fluent in French! I will have to mention your comment to her. The word does pop up in gardening discussions from time to time.

Too late for a smoothie tonight, had hummus for dinner. Chose Dazzling Gold this morning, still detectable faintly on my wrist. I discovered the two Dazzling scents via samples of their body creams which were incredible, it was around the early 2000s and twelve years ago I purchased mostly full bottles of each but the truth is I don’t wear them enough. Their scent is perfect, I tested Silver too but I feel I should wear them as they may not last forever. Tonight it’s Caron Fleurs de Rocaille.

I have to go back to yesterday’s SOTD post and thank everyone for their response! I am over the hump of wanting to take the training sessions to qualify to be a mediator. Other than being out the tuition, there’s no down-side for me, at least from what I can tell as of today. My lawyer friend who mentioned it to me said he will email me on Monday (yesterday). He didn’t and it’s probably because he forgot — he definitely sustained damage that affected his memory after he had a pretty serious bike accident 7-8 years ago.

After so many people recommended it to Marta yesterday, I decided to give ELdO Rien another go, despite recalling that I did not like it one bit when I first sampled it. So many of the scents recommended yesterday are favourites that I thought I should give it another try.

I should not have. On me it is still Eau d’Ashtray. I think maybe it’s the suede note that smells overly artificial and plastic-y, combined with incense I’m not smelling as incense, just as cigarette smoke and ashes. Yep, same reaction as last time — it does not smell like Rien. It smells like something, all right…something awful. I’m trying to stick it out but it just does not work on me.

Rien must be one of those perfumes that is heavily dependent on personal chemistry. IIRC, it was a great incense perfume with a bit of phenol and sun-warmed skin on me.

Yeah, I think so. I love a good incense and I’ve seen some people describing this as the inside of a church (for me, that’d be Avignon). I get no incense at all, just plastic cigarette (and not good cigarette — I don’t mind Jasmin et Cigarette). It finally died down, after a couple of hours, and it’s tolerable. At this point I’m just getting some faint vanilla. I’ve given it its two chances and it’s going into the giveaway bag.

Not the best day of weather here this morning, with snow squalls in the area. However, the snow did clear itself out by lunchtime. Still rather nippy outside.

SOTD = EL Azuree Legacy EdP. No cumin in this to my nose. But I am not terribly sensitive to or offended by it in perfume. This is a pale reflection of the original, with none of the leather that I smell in the OG bottle that I have.

Yeah, that front tore out of Colorado super quick!

The EL Legacy sample set was definitely worth the $30, even if some of the remakes were kind of “Meh”. Nothing in it was horrible or sickly sweet, so props for that.
