Friday scent of the day 2/23

Posted by Robin on 23 February 2024 169 Comments

It's Friday and National Banana Bread Day! Birthdays: Samuel Pepys, W. E. B. Du Bois. Our community project for today: we're off to New Zealand! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in New Zealand, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to New Zealand, or that features a local ingredient, or ?

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

The readers of Rough Guides voted New Zealand the most beautiful country in the world in 2023 (although it came in second to Indonesia in 2022 by the UK's Money). All the gorgeous greenery and water made me thing of Diptyque's L'Ombre dans L'Eau, so that's my pick, and it's just a shame I can't wear it on the banks of the Manawatu River. (And yes, I did blow some time this week looking at real estate listings.)

Reminder: On 3/1, Rabbit rabbit rabbit! It's March. Wear a fragrance that will bring you peace, happiness or good luck for the month.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello and tgif!
Sotd is Bee as the honey reminds me of one of NZ’s most famous export, the manuka honey. To boost the experience, I washed my hair with Lush’s Fairly Traded Honey shampoo.
Dinner will feature loaded baked potatoes topped with: butter, corned beef, A LOT of melty cheddar cheese and a big dollop of sour cream.

Your dinner sounds delicious! It makes me think of a favorite fast food restaurant of my youth: One Potato Two. You loaded up your baked potato with toppings of your choice. Wish they were still around. Any other midwesterners remember them?

I’m in Abel Nurture. I wasn’t sure that I would have anything for the cp but then Kanuka posted that great list on Monday and I had completely forgotten that Abel is from New Zealand! It’s described as a soft floral musk. A scent “ to celebrate and support motherhood. Nurture reminds mothers to take care of themselves while caring for a little one too.” I’ve mentioned before that I work with moms and new babes so I figured this scent would be very work appropriate for me.
It’s Friday, my day off and the sun is out!🌞 We’ve been having the most unseasonably warm weather. We will hit the mid 60s next week which is just crazy. I am loving the warm temps but it does make me a bit nervous for the summer.😬 If we are 60 now, is it going to be 90 in May?
I lost out on a bottle of my beloved Lea last weekend on evil bay. All last week I was the only bidder which I figured was too good to be true. Someone swooped in in the last 24 hours and won. I went way above my comfort level and it ended up selling for almost $600. I just keep thinking about how much perfume I could buy for that amount of money. Someone really wanted it I guess.
This warm weather has me eyeing spring scents.🌸🌺🌼

My unscientific research says warm winter brings cool summer and will be followed by an early winter next season.
The Midwest always pays for a decent winter. Lol.
Sorry about missing out on the perfume.

That’s a very nice house, but I don’t think they will get much use of the deck – Owhiro Bay is right on Cook Strait, the windiest part of a windy city.

Great choice! It’s a beautiful perfume, if you’re ok with a very low level and soft projection. I liked it so much after trying Abel sample set that I actually bought a full bottle. Some days you do need a scent that will whisper rather than shout..

I didn’t think I had anything that would fit the brief but you mentioned pittosporum a few days ago and of course as soon as I read that I thought of vintage EL Knowing: when it was launched, the promotional material quoted Lauder as saying she smelled it on the Cap d’Antibes or wherever preposterously rich people go and knew she had to put it in her next fragrance. I still don’t know what pittosporum smells like, but I do know that Knowing parfum is one of the all-time great chypres. I may only be doing household chores today but I smell good doing them (amid the bleach and white vinegar and laundry detergent).

Am sampling Moon Moss from Curionoir which is a New Zealand company. It is a gorgeous green, moist scent with a lovely hyacinth note.

Signed up for an online class on facial diagnosis and it’s fortunate that I can rewatch it for a week since I have to take a midterm in the middle of it today

    Hello all!

Just dropped off little Jicky to get his teeth cleaned. I have a feeling this is the first time he’s ever had it done and I’ve been nervous about having it done since I’ve gotten him.

I’m not scented yet because I have some chemistry homework to finish before I get ready for my class, but I’m thinking Neroli Vetiver Harvest. I’ve barely worn it since I got it last summer because it’s a limited edition. The light honey note really makes this one sing, but the original is also really lovely.

    Have a great day everyone.

I am wearing my favorite Serge Lutens Fille en Aiguilles. With the pine, I think it fits the CP, although I know pines are an introduced species. I found in wearing Serge Lutens for a few days that I am not particularly fond of any of the scents that I have from that line, other than Fille en Aiguilles, which discontinued. I think that next up is going to be Diptyque.

It’s not discontinued! It’s been moved to the 100-mL Gratte-ciel line, which means it’s ungodly expensive, but it is still available, and I see some online places still have the old 50-mL bottles.

I am a mad Lutens fan but I never took a shine to it and I couldn’t say why. I had a co-worker who adored it, though: I gave her my commercial sample and after she was done with it she got me to buy her a bottle on my next trip, because I am an enabler and proud of it.

I chose Lostmarc’h Iroaz for the CP, in part because of its beachiness and in part because “Iroaz” looks like it could be a Māori word (it’s actually Breton, apparently). And, of course, because I adore it. Happy Friday everyone!

I really wanted to play the CP today but I am short for time with a call starting in a minute for work. I did a quick survey of my perfumes out and about, and failed at finding a good connection to New Zealand. I know with more work something would have emerged. So in my moment of fail I’m in Crystal Saffron. However, I did learn that one of our absolutely most favorite books to read to our boys when they were little was authored by an New Zealand writer. I had no idea. If you have young children, 2-5 years old, Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy is LOVELY! Decades later, we all still quote it🩷

Do you have young kids? In the badass cat category, I also recommend Six Dinner Sid. Not for its earworms, but we all know six dinner kids, I mean Sids.

I too have given countless copies of Hairy as gifts. Who hasn’t pushed themselves away from the dinner table moaning ‘Here comes Schnitzel von Krumm with a very low tum!’ 🥴 Right?

Hahaha. Oakland Fresca my ‘kids’ are in the their 20s now but I swear those books are imbedded somewhere in their craniums. The most marvelous children’s books delight adults as well as children, or perhaps awaken the child in the adult.

Wearing Demeter New Zealand, a very green and refreshing scent that I really enjoy wearing. My full bottle is all the time in the back of the perfume cabinet, and I forget to reach for it, especially during summertime. In fact, most of my Demeter bottles are neglected despite liking most of them.

Coffee and a couple of hazelnut chocolate truffles. I’m so glad it is already Friday! 🌞

I had originally intended to wear Boronia by Grandiflora but I decided against it. That perfume pays tribute to an Australian plant and is from an Australian house. It just seemed wrong to use it for this CP.
When I think of New Zealand, I think of green and blue. So in the end I chose Chamade by Guerlain, which is probably the most beautiful green fragrance I own.

    SOTD = Tauer Nexin

… from bottle 007, a very special one indeed. I was not planning on wearing it today but I couldn’t find Demeter New Zealand! One of the Instagrammers I follow posted about her bottle today and how the floralcy perked up. I wore it when it first came out and while I liked it, I felt it needed more time. Here we are 4 months later and yes, the floral ones are now more prominent and it is very well-balanced as a whole! 🤍. I think the vetiver is affiliated with New Zealand?

My CP choice is Dusita La Rhapsodie Noire, which I chose because 1)it’s a fougere and b)it has a broom note. Although broom isn’t native (probably brought in by Scottish settlers,) I was reading an article about how it’s being used to shelter new growth of native flora. So, instead of being just an invasive weed, it can actually perform a service. How cool is that?

This is silly, but I’ll post it anyway: Thinking of New Zealand often makes me think of The Lord of the Rings, since it was filmed there. (No offense to Kanuka and Gaynor!) So perfume + NZ + LoTR = Samwise + Rose = Diptyque Eau Rose EdP! Which I’ll wear tonight.

    Have a fun weekend, everyone!

It was only out around the holidays, so limited availability when it was around. Then 2 or 3 years ago, Clinique didn’t release it at all. (sad face) It hasn’t been available since, except on the secondary market.

If you like Aromatics Elixir, you probably would like Wrappings. They are definitely related.

Contemporary Maori art can take many shapes: it can be rooted in tradition, responding to creation myths and legends or using traditional materials ( harakeke flax, wood, Pounamu greenstone); protest : a response to colonisation, stolen lands, or environmental degradation; celebration of tikanga Maori ( culture, way of life)…all sorts of things. I really enjoyed this exhibition so am using this as my inspiration and pairing it with Mea Taramea, a local ( Kai Tahu ) perfume using taramea gum at its base.

Also sorry to burst your bubble Robin but the Manawatu is one of the most polluted rivers in the country ( dairy run off). So, here is an alternative.

But in reading this week, did see lots of stuff about pollution concerns, including for that lovely lake I posted on Tuesday. Same everywhere, right?

That exhibit looks amazing, what gorgeous use of color.

Pretty sure I’m not in alignment with the CP, as per usual. It’s supposed to be another lovely sunny day today, but it’s quite chilly this morning and they are forecasting decreasing temps and snow this week. So my hand naturally went to Profvmvm Ambra Aurea. So delicious! A warm fur wrapped about my person could not be as cozy and comforting.

I started a book last night that had my little brain so delighted and enraptured, I had to turn it off (audiobook) because I knew I would never get to sleep if I didn’t. The language is 👩🏻‍🍳 😘 magical! As it is, the last time I looked at the clock, it was 3am. Now, I’m shuffling along like a zombie.

My order from Cocoa Pink is waiting at the post office so I’m looking forward to giving it a good sniff. Particularly interested in the small bottle of hair glissade I purchased…

    Happy weekend to all!

Deva, I didn’t have a good fragrance for the CP, so I chose Dojima, by Mona di Orio. Dry spices over amber feels pretty special to me. This response is really my clumsy attempt to find out-what’s the audiobook????

The books is “North Woods” and the central character is a cabin/house over the course of three to four centuries. The writing is a lyrical waltz of words! I now must read everything by this author. Linked a review below:

Was rooting around the samples for something CP compliant and have just thunked my tiny vial of Santa Maria Novella Acqua di Cuba. It’s got that medicinal linament vibe that so many of the SMNs do, and it might be one of the few that I find too masculine and boozy, animalic, peaty, smoky. If I ran into anyone I knew at the dog park this morning, I was going to clarify why I smelled like I’d just staggered out of a bar. Initially I was ready to pass on it, but then I recalled that Cuba is an island and so is NZ, two, actually, so I figured that would sorta work. Plus maybe I smell a bit like a NZ horse that just got its saddle taken off, then rubbed down with linament by a boozy cowboy.

One of the coolest city streets in the country is called Cuba St and it has a famous fountain ( Bucket fountain ) so total win on the CP. Also lots of bars and cafes on Cuba St , and a coffee brand called Havana

No CPD and I’ve never been to New Zealand, but from what I know about the country (and Kanuka’s vivid descriptions) this is lush nature at its best. I’d love to visit.

I’m home and chilling with Dusita Anamcara and Grand Soir. I was in need for sensorial delight after a long day at work, and I’m really enjoying both! Not discordant, but pairing well. Anamcara reminds me of a meadow full of bees and nectar 🐝 I need to show it more love.

Good morning from the largest city in the most beautiful country in the world! I’ve been in Auckland for the last three days for work, and am staying a day longer to go to a Guo Pei exhibition.
Thank you for your best wishes for my mother. I think she is starting to feel a little better and settling in to the rest home for the next few weeks, meanwhile I’ve been rushing from one end of the country to the other.
I was excited to find the Guerlain exclusives here, but not so excited at the price. I tried Tobacco Honey, and it’s lovely, but I won’t be getting an FB unless my salary miraculously doubles.

I’m testing Abel’s Black Anise again, to decide if it is too sweet and traditionally masculine for me, but my nose is acting wonky today and I can only smell the base notes. This has been happening for a while after I got COVID two years ago, so I will have to wait and try again. Despite the partial nasal sabotage, I am sure I am smelling very nice and double full of NZ vibes because I put Avocado Pear cream from Antipodes, another NZ company, on my hands. It’s too rich for my face but it works great elsewhere, hands, neck etc. It has such a bold sandalwood, ylang ylang and patchouli scent that I often apply it just for the lovely fumes.

I bought Black Anise about six months ago and I think it might be starting to go off a bit as it’s changed and now has a slight fetid note. This hasn’t happened with other Abel perfumes so I’m a bit surprised.

I am woefully ignorant about New Zealand and am very grateful to Kanuka for bringing it to life so beautifully earlier this week.🙏. I’m going with ‘herbs, mosses, lichen,’ and ‘marine scents, kelp, sea, sand, beaches’ in my choice for today’s cp: Dior Dune, with notes of all of the above, one of my top 5 favorite scents ❤️, layered over various sea-scented b&b products.

We’ve been enjoying what-sure-feels-like spring most of this week, a short break for a tiny bit of snow tonight and colder weather for another day or so before the springlike weather returns. Awesome! Our snowdrops are fully up and open and there’s lots of green shoots coming up from the many bulbs Mr. Laila planted last year.🌷

Last night we went to an awesome program at our library, a taste of Peru. Two very talented musicians in colorful garb playing the folk music 🎶of the Andes Mountains in unusual sometimes hand-crafted instruments followed by a generous sampling of the country’s cuisine, followed by a wonderful presentation of Peru’s history through its food by a delightful young woman whose dad owns a Peruvian restaurant in Chicago. Did you know that the ‘potato’ originated in Peru? I didn’t, but I learned that and many other delightful facts about what sounds like a beautiful country.

Wishing everyone a lovely weekend ahead with something to delight you and something new to learn!

I went with something mountain-inspired in honour of NZ today, as I was rushing around trying to tidy up and get out before the cleaners came: The Holy Mountain. I desperately want to see more of New Zealand and the mountains someday. LotR is such an amazing advertisement 🙂 , but I wanted to go before. As close as I’ve come has been 18 hours on a layover in Auckland, so not much for mountains.

I need to spend more time with Love-in-a-Mist, but I’ll probably put it in the really like bucket. A couple I love that they discontinued are Samarinda and Cocoa Tuberose.

I’m glad to see that I’m not the only person who thought of the LotR angle for today’s CP. A lot of the movie scenes fit the mental images I had of Middle Earth, especially Rohan. But I approached mine from the books, and used the same perfume that I scented Galadriel with.

Getting to NZ is on my Bucket List, along with Hawaii. Maybe someday…

I’ve been in the follow Zoologist scents throughout the day, due to new samples arriving: Harvest Mouse, Cow, Penguin, and Macaque Yuzu edition.

I already love Harvest Mouse, but am trying to stave off a FB purchase by getting more samples.

I’ve been huffing Cow since I put it on, which surprised me because I was leery of the apple note.

Macaque Yuzu is a hard no. There is some wood note that hits all wrong. I am forever wishing I could truly identify what it is. I call it the “dreadnote”. Everything in the Fragrantica pyramid is something I like and wear in other perfumes. 🤷‍♀️

Penguin needs more sampling. My initial impression was, “Nice, but I don’t need another marine scent.”

I’m sure I could craft a CP connection for one of those! Too tired to think about it right now, though.

One of the rarest penguins in the world …there are about 200 pairs on mainland NZ , and they are found near me and I’ve seen them. I think there’s maybe 3000 in the world. Really cool birds.

Oh, cool! This has revealed my “innate, when I’m not thinking too hard” mental map of the world can be really off base. In my head, NZ is not as close to Antarctica as it really is.
