Thursday scent of the day 2/22

Posted by Robin on 22 February 2024 105 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy National Margarita Day! Birthdays: George Washington, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Horace Pippin, Edward Gorey, Kyle MacLachlan, Steve Irwin. What fragrance are you wearing?

I overslept spectacularly (after not having slept well the night before), and so I'll pick my fragrance once I catch up!

Reminder: on 2/23, we're off to New Zealand! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in New Zealand, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to New Zealand, or that features a local ingredient, or ?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Yesterday I wore Coromendal to the library and today I am in Ysatis By Givenchy.

Listening to NPR and flipping through the paper
Trying to finish this hugs Sarah J Maas book. Library has been calling that its due back..

Ysatis is a fun one! Not my favorite of the 80’s power florals but whenever I encounter someone who wears it, I compliment them.

Boucheron is fun, but Byzance is my absolute favorite. I don’t have any on me right now but it was a statuesque floral with spare spice and warm sandalwood. I haven’t tried the relaunches.

I bought a bottle of Ysatis back in the day. The first time I wore it out in public, someone told me it smelled “so French”. LOL. It’s long gone now.

Beautiful sunny day for me to leave California and return to the rain. SOTD is Jardin sur le Nil, which has nothing at all to do with NZ, but oh well. Happy birthday to Kyle MacLachlan! The house where we’re staying has a channel that is nothing but Portlandia, all the time. 🙂

Anytime I want to make myself laugh, I think of the scene in the bookstore when Carrie asks Fred to hand her a book and Fred’s character feigns reaching for it (right next to him) and then says he just can’t. They make comedic magic together.

Have a great trip to the beautiful country of Aotearoa! I am wearing Curio Noir Pablo, that I picked up in Christchurch last year (where my partner is from).

If your plans include Wellington, I highly recommend checking out Fragifert, the perfumer at the top of the hill, after a funicular ride to the top of the hill. He has a nice sampler set available extracted from native NZ plants and trees.

Another grave I pass each day belongs to a botanist/ painter John Buchanan ( his grave is covered in weeds and moss which seems fitting). He sometimes travelled for months , either in survey parties or by himself studying plants. This painting is of Mitre Peak (1863) in Fiordland ( which I climbed 35 years ago, after kayaking across the bay) and it’s appropriate for today as 23 Feb. 1904 was the day that steps were taken to create Fiordland National Park. The smells were mulchy green dense bush and moss. The view from the top was incredible, straight down into the sea 6000 ft below. Wearing Chypre Mousse.

Woke to a bit of sun today so I hope it lasts because I need I few warm rays. It’s been forever.

Canoodling with Uncle Serge again today in Vetiver Oriental which is always a big deep breath in and a long sign out. It’s like an emotion compass in the way it resets me.

I have a bunch of running around to do which I generally don’t mind, but the traffic here is horrendous. Mix in construction and aggressive, rude drivers and it can sour your day.

Hope everyone is getting at least a peek of sunshine today. 🌞

I’ve been wondering how to match New Zealand to fragrance. I’ve never been there (although I wish I had) and am not that familiar with the country or its culture. The one New Zealand artist I’ve been familiar with for a while, is Janet Frame. I watched An Angel at my Table sometime in the nineties and read her three volumes of autobiography years later. Her’s was a fascinating life, and certainly not an easy one. Still, in the end she was successful in spite of everything. Her story always makes me feel slightly melancholy but also hopeful, which is the reason I chose Heure Exquise today.

I had planned to wear a whole week of fougères for the ferns of NZ. I had no idea until I started researching this week that ferns were of such significance in NZ, I had never noticed that many national sports teams use the silver fern as a symbol. It was interesting to read about its importance for the Māoris and other indigenous populations.

Alas, my week got very busy and I didn’t have time to dig for samples until today, I’m wearing Hendley Mown. And tomorrow I’ll do Boy, my favorite fougère.

    Happy almost Friday eve!

The Wall Street Journal had an article the other day about piping in office fragrance to boost moods and entice people to go back to the office. It mentioned how Hines, a commercial real estate company, began to pump in a fragrance in its office tower in Texas and will soon be expanding it to 20 other locations. The fragrance notes include jasmine (improve happiness and confidence), sandalwood (alleviate anxiety) and pine (fight fatigue), among others. There were 4 prototypes made and two were selected as finalists. Also, apparently, other experiments had lavender as a scent note but it could be used because someone was allergic to it.

What do you think? I’m not opposed to it but really, at this day and age of chemical sensitivities, this feels like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

I think there are better ways to entice people to go back to the office. I think you are right though, it could backfire by people saying they can’t come back due to the smell.

I like the idea, but the sensitivity of fragrance in some people would probably be an issue. I noticed in some hotels they put out a scent (thinking of the Westin) that I loved. I don’t know if they have had issues, but know you can buy it on their website.

Some hotels already do this, as you mentioned. When I went on an Amalfi Coast hiking tour, the first hotel we stayed at Hotel Miramalfi had its own customized smell as well.

I’m not a fan of the idea. What if you hate your company’s scent?

Being stuck around a smell you don’t like is almost as bad as listening to music that you don’t care for.

The store has been very busy due to people spending their tax refunds. Every year I am amazed by it.
Today I wore Cafe Tuberosa. My travel spray is about 3/4 gone. I think I will thunk it this year.

I think some of them do the tax refund advance thing.

I saw rain, snow, mixed precip, heavy rain, and finally clearing skies today. It’s been chilly out, so a good day to stay inside and do a load of laundry.

SOTD = back in Estee Legacy. Should have picked something with a bit more heft. This perfume is much happier in warmer temperatures.

      That’s some crazy weather there!
It’s been 60 here the last 2 days but there is a chance of snow tomorrow. Lol. Such a Rollercoaster.

My parents used to joke that you could experience all 4 seasons in one day in Colorado.

I always keep an eye on the sky out here.

It’s back to the yucky weather here with cold drizzle and rain, but this too will pass.

There seems to be unsettled weather here about once a week now.

Eventually we will both see the sun again!

Ughhh, it’s been a long and difficult work week. Not much perfume for me, I just keep forgetting.

I did get some samples in the mail today, so am trying FM Synthetic Jungle and Heaven Can Wait. Will comment on both another day when I have energy to do so.

Samples of the OG versions of the recent EL “Legacy” collection also arrived. There was just one of the 5 I couldn’t find at STC, though I don’t remember which right now. Anyhoo, I’ll be doing some side by side testing this weekend.
