Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, Year of the Dragon 2024

Posted by Robin on 10 February 2024 96 Comments

We're welcoming the new (lunar) year with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance that will encourage an energetic and idealistic year, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Today I’m in Dior Midnight Poison, which isn’t in any way midnight blue, but a unisex patchouli rose (it’s practically Poison Pour Homme, to be honest). I fell in love with it the instant I sampled it.

I find all the Poison flankers very good in different ways, but the only one I have a bottle of is Hypnotic Poison cuz I’m an almond marzipan girl.

That bottle is really stunning! You need to open a perfume museum where all your bottles can be artistically displayed and lit by dramatic lighting with a little placard at the forefront that gives the history and notes of the scent. You can call it “Maison Hajusuuri 🐉” and charge entrance fees. If people want a sample spray, there is a cost associated with that, graduated in direct accordance with the rarity of the scent. On top of the entrance fee, of course. If they want a nice hot cuppa while they amble along, another fee for that. Extra fee for cream or sugar. A croissant? Of course you have that, and pain au Chocolat, too. Just a small fee, please! Then you’ll be just like the Government, only better smelling! 🥐🫖

Happy New Year! I HOPE this will be an auspicious year for all NSTer’s but pretty convinced the world doesn’t work that way. So, like a teeny tiny new person who loves to be bundled, I have snuggly swaddled myself in Shalimar MVP. Still my all time favorite iteration which comforts my adult self like a pacifier and swaddle does a newborn. I’ll start howling like a banshee when I’m hungry, but other than that, the world can leave me in peace, thank you very much! 👼

    Happy weekend!

I went fragrance browsing today in a nearby mall. I have Memo Siwa in one wrist and Memo Jannat. They’re both very pretty and undemanding. Siwa is softly sweet like skin lotion- vanilla with cereal hints, reminds me a bit of baby head smell. Jannat is an interesting citric fresh scent with florals. Feeling the impulse to first impression bottle buy, but checking myself as that usually goes wrong.

Today I’m happy that my 12 year old kitty, who has been suffering with a mysterious allergic skin problem (milliary dermatitis) and overgrooming seems to finally be doing better. After a few visits to the vet who advised an anti allergy food (did nothing) and steroid- didn’t do much plus potential side effects- giving her wet food with just chicken meat seems to be working great. She’s much more playful, no more scabbing for the last week and her hair is growing. Yay!

We had a cat that started over-groomed. I can’t recall everything we tried, but a dry food that had a different animal protein really helped. It seemed to settle something down, and after a year or so, we went back to her old food without any problems.

That’s good to know! This change has been radical, where two anti allergy foods did not work. I guess it shows it’s food related.

I’m doing some sampling this morning since I have a little pile from Luckyscent’s recent free shipping weekend. So far today I’ve tried two from Marissa Zappas, Flaming Creature and Maggie the Cat is Alive, I’m Alive! I really enjoy both with the edge given to Maggie the Cat. They both wear very close to the skin from my small application, so I’ll apply more next time I wear them. I think I might put another couple samples on other spots of my arms in a moment.

We’ve got a beautiful Saturday here with the sun beaming in from every window and a high of 49. I’m sure we’ll take a nice, long walk somewhere nearby. I also just got an email from Salt & Straw that they’re offering a free pint if you buy 3 for pickup at any of their shops (Super Bowl deal, it appears). We do have a S&S in our neighborhood so I think that might be the last stop of our outing. 😉

In wonderful news, our new mattress arrived yesterday! We were long overdue for a new one, and this also caps off our overhaul in our bedroom. In the last month, we’ve gotten a new bed and headboard, night stands, pillows, and two sets of sheets. The only thing left on my list is a nice blanket, which is proving difficult for me to pin down. We don’t have a duvet and don’t want a comforter because my partner sleeps too warm. So it’s a bit limiting. If anyone has bedding stores or companies they can recommend, I’m all ears.

In a last bit of fabulous news, my partner has been taking advantage of his unemployed time since his layoff last month and has been doing some deep cleaning, organizing, and purging. How nice it was to come home from an in-office day on Wednesday to see a rejuvenated kitchen and a pile ready for Goodwill. If only we could afford for him always to be a homemaker heh.

I know I just left a very long comment, but I meant to also say that I’m relieved that an eBay purchase that was stuck in Salt Lake City for 6 days is finally out for delivery. I got an amazing deal on a partial bottle of vintage Aliage. I was inspired to look for deals on some vintage Estee Lauders after the news came out about the Legacy collection. I think next I’ll grab a mini of Knowing parfum. It’s one I’ve never worn but my best friend in middle and high school liked wearing her mom’s bottle sometimes.

Oh, yeah. I am due to start scanning forms into the tax portal. I have had an accountant do my taxes for me for the last 12 years or so, because it got very complex and was taking me too long. Even so, I dread the organizing. I did develop a filing system so that I can file tax related items in a cabinet near my kitchen so stuff that comes in the mail is quickly filed rather than piling up.

People can be quite sensitive, especially the Irish because of history. And even in the United Kingdom, the Scots and Welsh think they’re from Scotland and Wales first.

Hope your winter won’t be too long now, glad you had a break.

Commando — it has been such a busy day that I forgot! Mr. Skal and I both slept soundly last night, for the first time in at least a week, and found ourselves rushing out the door to get to an excursion at our regional Audubon Center. It was meant to have been a snowshoe hike, but there is no snow here, so we walked around the marshes with their education guide. Everyone else had cancelled so it ended up being a private tour. Sighted: trumpeter swans, Canada geese, Cooper’s hawks, bald eagles! Heard but not seen: woodpeckers, American tree sparrow, and Eastern bluebird (the last one is particularly exciting). A good morning out on a beautiful day that was far too warm f

Finally off this weekend and yesterday I was a whirling dervish of housecleaning, grocery shopping and cooking then collapsed at 10 PM.

I got my sample pack of Estée Lauder Legacy Collection so trying them out. Yesterday it was Azuree, which reminded me of Aromatics Elixir which I never owned but had tested at the counter. I liked it better as the day went on but not really my type. Reminded me a little, also, of YouthDew Amber Nude which I like and should wear more often.

Today, it is Knowing. Not purchase worthy for me but a fun diversion from my usual choices.

I think the drawback for trying the Legacy Collection in my case is that I never tried all of the scents in the original form. However, those the new versions might be a reasonably similar taste of the originals in a nice little package. I wonder of there will be a run for the originals, since they could become scarce.

That seems like a bonus to me…if you don’t like any of them you can safely never worry about it again.

After 2 insane days at work, I am happy that I am off. How hard is it to decide on either cupcakes or a cake? Had a woman who couldn’t decide if she wanted specialty cupcakes or a cake. The woman wasted 20 minutes trying to decide and first decided on cupcakes. Then a half an hour later, she brought back the cupcakes and wanted the cake instead. I don’t know why she didn’t call her friends to see what they wanted in the first place and then she had said that it shouldn’t take long to put the cupcakes back. She must have seen my eyes and then realized that what she said wasn’t exactly cool. It’s a Saturday and the day before the Super Bowl and I am just mobbed with other customers. Fun times working retail.

    Wearing Lyric today.

Either way, seriously, you can return baked goods? I never really thought about it but that’s sort of gross.

I am not sure if she made it through the checkout before she changed her mind. I swear that people can’t make up their minds before they order or make the necessary phone calls before they get to the counter. What made me the angriest was the amount of time wasted. At a chain grocery store, you can return things.

I knew you could return things, but seems like you should not be able to return something someone has taken out of a case for you, unless there is something wrong with it. Anyway, sorry for the hassle!

Felt like cherry this morning, so wearing Lost Cherry over the Jergen’s cherry almond lotion. More errands later, but cuddles on the couch with puppy first. 🙂

I started the day in SL A la Nuit because I noticed the bottle was leaking a bit. Can’t lose any of that precious juice!

Then I sprayed my sample of the new Azurée and I’m wondering if anyone can comment on the difference between the vintage and this new formulation. So far it’s my favorite of the Legacy series.

I’ll test Azuree Legacy later this week and let you know. I have a bottle from 2014 and some older minis. What type of bottle is your A la Nuit in, or was it tipped over? Leaks! Yikes!

I look forward to it😊 It was an older 50ml bottle and thankfully, not a bell jar😬

SotD Cinnabar, current version. It smells wonderful and lasts all day with just a few sprays. A beautiful day here – many signs of Spring/the New Year.

I’m going to have to re-test the current version.
