Wednesday scent of the day 2/7

Posted by Robin on 7 February 2024 122 Comments

It’s Tuesday Wednesday! and Rose Day. Birthdays: Charles Dickens, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Sinclair Lewis, Eubie Blake. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm full-on old lady in Diptyque L'Ombre dans L'Eau over Tauer Rose Delight body oil.

Reminder: 2/9 is Lunar New Year's Eve...wear an auspicious fragrance to ring in the Year of the (Wood) Dragon, or burn or wear incense to honor your ancestors.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I would have worn a full on rose fragrance if I had known about Rose day. I’m wearing Sacred Groove from THoO, which has rose, but it isn’t prominent. Quite pretty though.

I think this Rose Day (there’s another National Rose Day in June and maybe another sort later in the year) is meant as the start of the week preceding Valentine’s Day. So there will be more chances 🙂

I guess I am full on old lady too in Morn to Dusk by Eau Italie which is described as a floral woody musk.✔️✔️✔️ It’s by Annick Mernardo, and it does smell very pretty but sooo faint. Or maybe I’m anosmic. Anyone else familiar with this scent?
I got some samples from luckyscent yesterday. Yep, I caved and bought some during the free shipping. I did the custom fitting this time, requesting perfumes to replace my Lea. I had no idea which samples were coming which was kind of a fun surprise.

Oh, how fun and please report back on which samples they sent you and if any come close to Lea. I have precious little left in my bottle. I do need to go through and try out my other almond/vanilla/musk perfumes to see if any compare.

Come to think of it, Bourbon French Lady Evangeline fills a similar place in my memory so maybe I should order a travel size for just $10.

But what struck me most is that $140 for 100ml now seems, if not actually cheap, the going rate. Normal. 😔

Thanks Robin! Great review. I agree this is very sheer to the point of being a barely there skin scent on me. I do love Eau Duelle and it is probably what I will replace my Vanille Insensee with when it’s gone.

House twins with Robin and pl67, and also on CP with Tauer Incense Rose.

Surprise! I found out yesterday at 4:30 p.m. that I need to spend the entire afternoon at HQ & have to present, and then have to go to a “fun” event with the team afterward. (I probably shouldn’t put in the scare quotes, as this team actually is fun.) I wasn’t expecting a trip to the far suburbs today, but here we are.

Rose day? Don’t have to tell me twice! And speaking of twice, I’m bolstering a couple drops of eighties-vintage Joy (the rosiest thing in the entire world) with a couple sprays of Tauer Une Rose de Kandahar (for a bit of that angularity I love).

Rose Day compliant in White Linen Legacy. My lovely tester coffret arrived. I am meeting some friends for lunch and I decided to give WLL an outing. First impression was rose and lily-of-the-valley. Fragrantica says the white floral is jasmin, but I’m calling it like I smell it. It is very like White Linen, and I am trusting it will open up and follow me around and tell me something new. We shall see.

Good morning from a slightly sunny LA.
The sound of chain saws is everywhere as toppled trees are everywhere.
I have been noodling a bit on rose fragrances:
    Perris Rose Taif
    or
    Les Immmmmmonnndalessssss Rose Jamal
    Stong opinions from anyone??

    For today its Rose 31.

Hello Apsara. No chainsaws near me but lots of downed branches. But that sun feels good. I find a lot of similarities between Rose 31 and Paestum Rose, but the LL veers more cuminy/spicy on me while the Eau d’Italie is spicy but green with rose.

I have a sample of the Eau d’ Italie.
Rose 31 does that but I love it.
I think I have a bottle of Jo Malone Velvet Rose and Oud
but they are not scratching my itch for a full on jammy rose.
I live near lots of old growth trees and hills.
Glad you are safe with no damage.

Rose in perfumery is, for the most part, not my thing. There are a few notable exceptions such as Paracelsus, Rose Anonyme, and of course my beloved Iroaz … and Rose Saltifolia, Diptyque Eau Rose, Gris Dior, Lubin Grisette, Kashân Rose, Chanel 19, and … okay, I guess I DO like rose notes. 😆 But this morning I was in the mood for Memoirs of a Trespasser. It goes so well with my morning ☕️.

Meanwhile, the dehumidifiers continue to drone away out in the garage, and this afternoon my laundry room gets torn up — the wall and floor adjacent to the garage sustained water damage in our ongoing saga, so that wall, floor and a cabinet are being removed this afternoon. Apparently the cabinet can be saved, thank goodness. Not sure how much of the floor will have to be ripped up though. 😩

SheriG, I feel the same…don’t like rose but have many exceptions. For me, the rose has to be boozy, spicy, jammy, fruity, woody, animalic, or have something else besides the beautiful florist rose vibe. Or be well-blended with other florals. So while I admire the original Tea Rose by Perfumers’ Workshop, for instance, I like it better on others than on my own skin. Ombre Rose by Jean Charles Brosseau is a great one that blends woods, rose, musk. And the vintage versions are shockingly animalic as well.

Still smelling like Mon Patchouly, which isn’t bad, just too masculine for me. It also reminds me of a pulmonologist I used to work with years ago. So many years ago I forgot all about him until I put this perfume on yesterday, at which time he moved the the forefront in my mind. I think I’m going to have a “thunk free” day today and wear one of my favorites, just don’t know which yet…

In other news, my Dragon Candle arrived yesterday and it’s lovely! No buyer’s remorse here. I would say it has a small to medium throw which is perfect for this small space. Even the Thymes Evergreen one gets to be too much after about 10-15 minutes. Forget about the BBW candles! They are like a mushroom scent bomb.

Also, checked in with security about parking here on Sunday when I arrived. Got a vehicle sticker and some options for parking which are not the best. Woke this morning to a find a note from security asking about my “intent to park here.”

    Here we go! 😵‍💫

I’m wearing Passage l’Enfer today. For some reason the picture of the red decorations above made me think of it. Smoke and fire are easily related to dragons, right? I am thinking of going for lunch at my favorite neighborhood Vietnamese restaurant, which is always beautifully decorated with red lanterns and big bouquets of yellow chrysanthemums for the Lunar New Year celebration. Actually this perfume has more sweetness in it than I’d remembered; I looked it up and it has a lily note. We have a sunny day, windy, and around 70 but it feels chilly in my house.

Hope everyone is doing well. My brother and sister-in-law have gone back home for now, and he will either arrange to get his next treatments administered up north in three weeks or come back here to get them. Fortunately so far he has not had any negative reactions to the treatment last Saturday except fatigue.

Started in samples of Amouage Lineage and Material Woman, will need to sample both independently and more liberally. Underwhelmed at this point. (That said, samples Jubilation 25 last night and loved it.)

I’ve just topped up with Hermetica Rosefire, which is like a candied rose bubblegum. Not a perfume description I’d expect for an FB in my collection, but I have to surprise even myself sometimes.

Like others who’ve commented today, I’m picky about rose-forward perfumes. I have several Tauer’s, the Hermetica, plus a few rose-forward decants, but can’t think of much else in my collection that is wholly focused on rose. (Certainly it appears as a supporting note in many!)

Pretty light and not a long lasting as the Original, but no big deal because I wore 16 sprays today! Wonderful smell though, so there’s that!

So yesterday after my walk back to the dealership where I had my oil change and windshield wipers replaced, I stopped by the dealership part. My car is 10 years old and it has low mileage; I go about a hair over 3,000 miles per year. In any case, if I were to replace the car, it would be with a hybrid. Unfortunately, Subaru only has either fuel-injected OR all electric. I’ll keep my car for now.

Anyway, my car was ready and the service rep said that I would have to pay a premium of 3% to use a credit card! What the – -? In all honesty, I shouldn’t have been surprised. I had to go to the car to retrieve gas money envelopes to have enough cash to pay. Seriously, I would have had to pay an extra almost $5 for the transaction which is enough money to pay for a nice cup of Starbucks coffee. Please don’t get me started on coffee prices…

Businesses are finding so many ways to gouge consumers. I’ve found the best way to off set this is to get a 0% APR card with a good % cash back with any purchase. I’ve been doing this for the past year and it’s working well. Most are 12-18 months 0% APR. When that time span ends, I usually just charge enough to do a balance transfer to another card to get another zero APR and % cash back.

I have them too but it is too much trouble to do that. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Geez, this credit card charge rubs me the wrong way, since car service can cost quite a lot, not something you’d usually pay cash for! I much prefer when smaller businesses use the carrot instead of the stick, offering you a discount for paying with cash.

There’s some kind of consumer protection law that mentions showing both the cash price and the one that includes the extra charge.

Your dim sum lunch yesterday sounded wonderful!

The CC service charge, not so much. I’ve been hit with a few of them recently.

Thank you. The dim sum was really good. Nowadays, we always ask if there is a cash discount or extra charge for paying with a credit card.

Long experience in as a product manager in credit cards, and honestly I hate the upcharge. (I know, I would, right, but I’m speaking more as a consumer.) In my experience, there is NO way that your dealership is paying 3% in interchange, given their volume. (Not to mention that once I walked into a U.S. dealership, shopping for cars, and the jerk salesman tried to pressure me after the test drive by telling me I could put the downpayment for the car on a credit card…which, pretty sure no, and if somehow so, they’re getting a crazy low interchange rate from their merchant acquirer.) The merchant gets a huge advantage from offering credit card payments. Passing on an unrealistic upcharge to you is stupid. Honestly, ask them to prove that they pay 3% to their acquirer. And, it’s a part of doing business for them. I get it from some small mom and pop shops (sorta), but not from a car dealership.

Thanks. I suppose I could have asked but then again, in the overall scheme of things, $5 wasn’t too much. With that said, now that I know, I will bring more cash with me were I to think that the cost of service was going to be 5x that amount.

Oh, I was compliant without knowing! It’s close to 9 pm here and preparing to wind down. In the morning before work I sprayed Lubin Kismet again and rose is definitely very prominent. And on coming home I was in the mood for incense so I have Caftan YSL over one arm. Recent purchase and I’m quite happy with it! It scratches the incense itch without being too cold and churchy- more sweet and temple/ oriental with as much benzoin as frankincense.

My favourite full-on rose is Hiram Green Lustre.

That description of Caftan YSL sounds amazing. Benzoin & frankincense are among my favorite scent notes.

I was very not compliant this morning in Iris 39, but now that it’s faded I’ve just spritz on La fille de Berlin. Yay for Rose Day, it’s fun seeing all the amazing rose scents being worn today.

I’m having coffee with almond milk, naughty drink, I hope I can sleep.

So, I pulled out my bottle of Molto Missoni this morning, it’s by far my most beautiful bottle, the scent is resinous/spicy with cinnamon, so very good, and tonight CP compliant in Messe de Minuit.

I used to hate rose scents when I was a kid (mean teacher associations), so I was very surprised to find myself liking rose perfumes as an adult. I wish I’d known it was Rose Day!

I’m wearing Galivant’s Brooklyn, which is all sunshine and oranges on my skin. Very cheerful, but definitely not rosey.

Robin, you said that today is Tuesday up in the first sentence. I was quite confused when I read that! 🙃

Very busy day yesterday, so much so that I couldn’t comment at all.
One task was getting a license for Teflon kitty. A couple of people joked “Does that mean she can drive now?” I replied “Probably, but not a stick shift (manual transmission).” Slowly getting things taken care of. But settling in after a big move is a marathon, not a sprint.

Today is Rose Day? All righty then! 🌹🌹🌹

SOTD = SL La Fille de Berlin, along with Boyfriend Body Creme on my shins. They complement each other very nicely.

It seems that in most places they do.

I didn’t bother back in NJ. Figured I would keep Teflon on the right side of the law here in CO.

They have cat licensing in Montreal but I don’t know anyone who actually complies if their cats never go outside. I didn’t. Now the dog, I would never go without as I’ve been stopped twice in the park and asked to show the tag.

That was part of the reason I never bothered in NJ. Teflon is strictly an indoor kitty.

But the apartment complex I am in requires documentation for Tef. It seems to be a consistent requirement here in Colorado.

Cat licensing? Honestly? Not a thing here that I know of. Reminds me of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnq96W9jtuw. (My cat is not named Eric. I’m set.)

Must be an American thing. It’s also a recent-ish development, since I don’t recall ever having to license the cats I had as pets when I was a kid.

I grabbed The Holy Mountain today for some beautiful incense and missed the rose day festivities.

Now I’m trying the EL coffret with others whose packages arrived today. To my nose, Private Collection is somewhat interchangeable with Synthetic Jungle (makes sense with Anne Filipo at the helm). I prefer Synthetic Jungle and my older bottle Private Collection from a generous NSTer swap with DeniseH. Money saved!

    I can’t wait to hear others’ impressions…😊
