Monday scent of the day 2/5

Posted by Robin on 5 February 2024 124 Comments

It's Monday, and as consolation, World Nutella Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m in Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Banane to go with my (imaginary, since I haven't got any) nutella toast.

Reminder: 2/9 is Lunar New Year's Eve...wear an auspicious fragrance to ring in the Year of the (Wood) Dragon, or burn or wear incense to honor your ancestors.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Another cold, snowy, windy day, but I’m warm as toast in Molinard Habanita.

Vanille Banana is a fun one on a winters day!

I’m in Bois des Iles to try to maintain some dignity. Wish me luck! Thunking will commence later tonight.

Hope everyone has a Mellow Monday!

Perfume samples arrived on Sat, so have been wearing Porter Sa Peau since then. It is very pretty, and falls in the Vrai Niche category (as opposed to poser niche, hat tip to She-Ra)😉.
Discovered the Vulture site entertainingly recaps All Creatures Great & Small. The recapper’s convinced that Mrs Hall and Siegfried belong together. Commenters typically agree, though there are a few Team Geralds. Haven’t read the book (nor binged on Passport), so am still in suspense!

I’m in Vanille Insensee which I haven’t worn in forever because too much perfume.
Had a lazy, lazy weekend which is sometimes exactly what is needed in life. Then slept horribly (!) last night because *somebody* kept waking me up with their snoring. Oof, I am dragging today.😵‍💫 But at least the sun is out so I can get out for a lunchtime walk and see if a dose of vitamin d can perk me up.
Got a text from my older daughter yesterday that she knocked it out of the park on her first grad school exam. Knew she would.☺️

So far yes- I am half way into the novel. I chose it because I read it’s one of his most widely liked. I haven’t read much by him, except the New York trilogy many years ago. This one is very nostalgic, it reminds me a bit of some books by Murakami.

I think because I compared it to Millesime iris. The list of notes does not include iris, but I would not be surprised if it did! It’s definitely rosy and balsamic.

We finally hit summer yesterday and got to 30C (86F) with no wind, which basically had me scuttling to the coolest spot I could find in the garden where I managed a few minutes of weeding before wilting. For me summer is like a deep, hot bath. Something I fantasise about and long for ( hot steamy bath, relaxing, candles etc.) but seem to hate in reality ( too hot, can’t move, want to escape). The guy across the valley was hay making until after dark, the sound of his tractor and the smell of hay drifting our way. Wearing Dusita Pavillion D’Or today. It’s not as hot and it’s Waitangi Day, (NZ Day) which marks the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between Maori and the Crown.

I can relate to that- both the hot baths and summer heat! However your summer evening, with hay scent coming through the windows, sounds enviable. Maybe there’ll be a breeze and you can create a bit of air current for the night.

Weather is always better on the other side of the sun syndrome? I was so desperate to get my hands in the dirt and laze about in the garden, that I ignored the rain on Saturday and just weeded in the wallows.

As Kanuka said, it’s a national holiday here, and I’m up and about early to make the most of it. I don’t sleep late like I used to 🙂
I’m testing Rozy VdE from Vero Profumo, and it doesn’t quite work for me. I tried the EdP when it first came out, and that was the same. I don’t know what it is, and I can never find the right words to describe smells, but no. My favourites remain Mito and Rubj EdPs, and I’m quite tempted by the sample of Rubj VdE to get a FB.

I grabbed Dzongkha to wear to a Candlemas party on Saturday (bonfire for leftover holiday greens, lots of candles indoors) and realized 1) I hadn’t worn it even once this winter; 2) it’s gorgeous. So I also wore it yesterday and today, making me unintentionally on topic for the CP.

Also managed a shockingly efficient round of errands this morning (haircut, brow threading, eyeglass-frame tuneup, clothing and household goods donation dropoff — all but the last are an hour away from home and so require some planning), so am feeling pretty good about spending the rest of the day grading assignments, posting new ones, and going to meetings.

I’m in Golestan today. Not sure it has anything to do with the CP. I bought a nice glass dish to put some of the mini bottles I have out on the counter in the washroom, and thought I’d try Golestan since I hadn’t for a while. When I put it on, I realized that particular bottle has the dreaded Tauer mini evaporation problem…grr. The older bottles are good, but this one is nearly gone and I’ve barely worn it. Sigh.

But! It was sunny yesterday, we have high clouds today, and we’re supposed to have sun again tomorrow. So I will go be happy anyway!

I think a couple of people here have reported issues with evaporation out of those bottles in the past. They’re beautiful little bottles but I think it’s hit or miss. (I have Sundowner, Les Annees 25, and Attar, all of which are fine, but Golestan and Les Annees Bis had evaporation issues.)

Today I decided to finally try Yvresse from the travel spray that allo generously included for me in my split package last fall. It smells great! But it irritates my poor sensitive nose, so I think I’ll need to make sure to only wear it under long sleeves and put on the long sleeves ASAP after spraying. If I had a scent related wish to be granted, I would wish for a less irritable nose/olfactory system!

I read the news on People.com (somehow they don’t think I subscribe, but I do.). I wish him well.

I didn’t know about People.com, I heard the news on the public radio BBC radio 4. Well, he has access to the best healthcare so let’s hope they can see him through.

It sounds like it was caught at a fairly early stage, so His Majesty does have that working in his favor.

It’s all over the news feeds here.

I’m in the weird and maybe wonderful (or maybe not!) Bistro Waters. Today I am getting loads of green pepper with grapefruit pith.

That perfume does sound weird. I don’t like either of those smells IRL; yet perfumes have surprised me so much that if I tried it, I could love it! 🙂

It’s a weird one for sure. Kind of addicting going on, but as it dries down I grow a little less fond. Fortunately or not, it doesn’t have much staying power.

The bridal shower yesterday was a nice get together with several honorary aunties. The theme was Star Wars; guess their wedding date? 🤣 We had fun gossiping. It was probably awkward when the groom’s birth mother was invited along with the stepmom, but it was what it was. I probably would have fired one of the organizers because she was too scatter-brained. I suppose I was used to more competent ones. It is a big commitment but seriously? Anyway, the overall event went well though, so there’s that.

Did I mention I started watching Northern Exposure? Whether or not I did, I am having a great time rewatching. I don’t remember half the things included!

Is the Star Wars theme carrying on into the wedding itself? I think that would be awesome!

SotD is Tuscany per Donna, due to the fact that I decided to see if one of those pump-fill travel sprays could get the last few mls out of a bottle with a leaky sprayer. It did, but the travel spray was from that bad batch I got and it was dripping out of the bottom! I managed to get the juice transferred to a pour-fill travel spray. I was left smelling fabulous. The bottle had lost its label, but I think it was an older one, and I got quite a bit of wonderful sandalwood with my florals. Later I went to the library with my NST reading list. Gonna grab some tea and skim around in a few of them. It is Spring here – wonderful sunshine, birdies chirping, a light breeze. But I just don’t think our area has seen the last of Winter yet!

You smell marvelous, I wore that recently, yes great drydown, when I got my bottle I didn’t know Aramis version was the coveted one but the really generous seller said it was rare and that I was going to love it, and indeed that’s what happened. What an adventure with the travel sprays, bad ones seem to be common.

Thanks! (whispers…Tuscany per Donna almost edges out its cousin Samsara to me.) I will have to compare the versions I have – one is the Aramis one. I am glad you have some of this beauty! TpD is still popping up on Ebay at decent prices – that may change. Also, I’m not going to get any pump-fills from Amazon again. A case of you get what you pay for, I think.

The Aramis version was the one I fell in love with as a broke college student. Have not smelled the EL version.

I love the combination of hazelnuts and chocolate, but I do not like Nutella at all. Too sweet for me.

Blue skies are back after a gloomy weekend. Yay for sunshine!

SOTD was a late spray of Laboratorio Olfattivo Kashnoir, which just came in the mail from 50ml, since it could be found nowhere here in the US. This was my most foolish (and $$$) blind buy, but I became obsessed with the idea of it (hoarding instinct kicking in). It’s seriously giving Shalimar, which I love, so yay! But do I need another version of Shalimar? Shall do a side by side and report back.

At Nordstrom yesterday they had the new Penhaligon’s potions collection, but no testers. Said they would come in Tuesday. They had some scent strips sprayed and laid out, though (I didn’t ask what they used to spray them if they didn’t actually have testers already). Eau the Audacity was very promising, but might be too duplicative of Vanagloria. The Penhaligon packaging, though! Sigh. I am such a sucker.

Yesterday, I skin tested Perris Monte Carlo Vanille de Tahiti (strong like, need to test more). White flowers and vanilla.

Also tested Vanilla Powder from Matiere Premiere. Almost a scrubber. Will never sample again. There’s a strong, sharp wood note that’s overpowering. Maybe the ambroxan? But I have scents with ambroxan that I don’t hate. Might be the amount used that’s the problem.
