Floris Wilde ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 1 February 2024 2 Comments

British niche line Floris will launch Wilde, a new unisex fragrance inspired by author Oscar Wilde, next week.

Creative expressionism of individuality, freedom and self. Inspired by the gentleman himself, Oscar Wilde. Understated but with an unmistakable presence.

Capturing sparkling bergamot and gentle citrus blossom, layered with the spicy combination of white jasmine, ginger and green carnation, an affirmation of Wilde’s love and affection for Lorde Alfred Douglas. The warming base of pure sandalwood oil, olibanum and benzoin adds a rich sophistication and depth. Understated but with an unmistakable presence.

Additional notes for the amber citrus include marine notes.

Floris London Wilde will be available in 10, 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum.

As soon as I saw the name I thought, “If that doesn’t smell like green carnations* then they have not done their research,” but sure enough, there it is! I’m going to have to try this to see what they’ve done with the theme. (I hope it’s heavy on the carnation and light on the marine notes.)

    * Aesthetes at the time wore in their lapels a carnation, originally white but with the stem placed in green-dyed water until it absorbed the colour, as a coded signal that they were gay. And in his play Salome, Wilde has the title character say, “Thou wilt do this thing for me, Narraboth, and to-morrow when I pass in my litter beneath the gateway of the idol-sellers I will let fall for thee a little flower, a little Green flower,” as a sort of a nod and a wink to knowing audience members.

They don’t seem to be making Malmaison Encore anymore, but hey, of course they would know better than do a “Wilde” without any carnation.
