Monday scent of the day 1/29

Posted by Robin on 29 January 2024 143 Comments

It's the last Monday in January, and there are 50 more days of winter to go. Birthdays: Edward Abbey, Anton Chekhov, Thomas Paine, Oprah Winfrey. What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m skipping straight ahead to spring, in L’Artisan Parfumeur Jacinthe des Bois.

Reminder: 2/2 is Groundhog Day...assemble some winter- and spring-appropriate samples in a bowl, and pick one at random, then tell us if spring will be early or late this year. (This is a repeat.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I finally confronted the boy. He didnt speak to me for last 3 weeks and I’ve been trying to meet him and talk every weekend of January. But yesterday we finally did, each of us shared their thoughts but basically I got dumped when he said he didnt develop feelings for me in these 5 months we were dating.

Darn, I really hate being single.

Iris Shot doesn’t help for my mood this time.

Confrontation is never nice so sending a hug and I hope you can find some quieter, happy moments in the weeks ahead.

Put a bunch of samples in a bag and pulled out Kalimantan.
I will let others determine the outcome of that…

Went out last night to a burlesque show with some Moms. Sporting a spicy margarita hangover this morning.

Several cups of coffee and now I am ready to start my day after I listen to a bit of NPR

Today I’m doing household chores in 1984-vintage Ted Lapidus Création, one of those quintessentially eighties chypres that always make me happy. If I had to wear nothing but vintage chypres for the rest of my days I’d be completely okay with that.

I’m in Tabac Blond EDP of unknown vintage. The decant is down to its last couple of drops and the juice has darkened and thickened to the point that it’s hard to distinguish from the extrait version. Yummy, and kind of fitting for the CP with its warm tobacco-leather for winter and its carnations for spring.

That’s a good list of birthdays. If they were all together on the couch on the Oprah Winfrey show I would probably watch . There’s a good film version of The Duel from about ten years ago with Andrew Scott in the main role of Laevsky and he captures it so well. It’s probably on Netflix in USA ( we only have Netflix lacklustre version here).
I have to go to hospital today…this will be with my third oncology specialist in three years. They keep losing doctors to retirement and Australia ( double the salary ) and they can’t replace them as there are better places to work. We have a medical school here but now the oncology dept. is so depleted they have lost accreditation and can no longer train registrars in oncology ( who used to take care of post-treatment patients like me) as there are not enough specialist supervisors, so the work load is taken up by locums. First world (!!!!) problems! Wearing Ginger Biscuit at the moment but it’s not yet dawn so will be scentless later.

Oh, sorry about the specialists, and I feel you — we don’t even have water separating us from the higher salaries (that said, I’m not sure every doctor wants to go deal with the headaches of the U.S. system even if it pays much better). But we do have shortages of doctors here. I hope all goes well!

I’m in Chergui today which is generally a cool weather fragrance for me, despite the fact that Seattle is unseasonably warm for a couple of days.

Question for everyone: if Fragrancenet shows a perfume in an older style bottle, can I assume that’s the bottle I would get or is that just a photo example and the perfume I would receive might be the latest version?

I’d guess you are 90%+ likely to get what you see, and in fact they sometimes note “new packaging.” If there’s been a change, and they show “photo coming soon” I’d guess new packaging.

I would agree with you and we actually rewatched that season with our daughters in preparation for this season. That swirl symbol is making another appearance, I’m curious to see where it’s gonna go. Jodi Foster is amazing (of course) and the overall creep/unsettling factor is giving that first season a run for its money. The fact that it’s set in Alaska during the time of no sun is only adding to the scariness.

I so hate trying to fix issues! I tried DirectTV at one point and had to get approval from the association because it’s considered an addition to the deck. Anyway, I ended up keeping it for a few months because once the vegetation started coming up, the quality became farkakte. I was charged an early termination fee which took me some time to resolve but I got the $$$s back.

    SOTD Il Profumo Chocolat. Thunk!

Last night before bed Il Profumo Vanille Bourbon & PdE Iksander. Thunk, thunk!

Beautiful sunny morning. Slept late because I was binge watching The Valhalla Murders, which was okay but predictable. I like the almost black and white style of the film as it was filmed in a cold country in winter.

Monday. One more week of freedom. I was trying hard to find something that would make me throw in the towel…I came close when the credentialing person was harassing me daily with emails about online work I couldn’t do (no password) and I finally emailed her back and said point blank, “If you need to delay start date or cancel this contract that’s fine. The online work will be late.” Since then, crickets…🙃

Wearing Gloria Vanderbilt’s eponymous perfume, a drugstore classic that remains well-rounded and pretty with creamy powdery iris. It’s a bit of a cosmetics fragrance. I’m not one for splurging impulsively on expensive fragrances but these little $20 deals do get me, so it’s nice that this one turned out well.

It’s a sunny morning here so I am taking my tiny chainsaw and chopping up the branches that fell during the recent ice/wind storm. I hate yard work.

Yes. It’s so convenient when a tree limb is less than 3″ because I don’t have to haul out the big chainsaw.

It’s mostly a sandalwood scent, with something else called mitti attar which is apparently made from clay pots.

Second day in Vol de Nuit edt, from a 2017 Bee Bottle and then a 1996 version. I am enjoying the dry down very much and am appreciating it overall more than I have before. I don’t detect a big difference between the two versions.

I’m skipping straight ahead to spring too in Beauty Pie’s She Brought Peonies. Well I was anyway, it’s faded by now.
The sun is back!🌞 I actually went for a lunch time walk for the first time in ages. My h gave me AirPod pros for my bday and this was the first lunch time walk I’ve been able to get in since then because it’s been so cold and cloudy. Spring must be coming!

The grab bag this morning turned up Tauer Zeta, so I guess we’re going for spring? (That said, the grab bag has something of a bias towards spring samples, I have to say.) It’s not raining (at the moment) and the atmospheric rivers have blown in warm temperatures, so it’s currently 14C. It’s…kind of like spring?

Feeling better today, with just a sore shoulder around where the vaccine went in. I had to work all day yesterday on something that’s been hanging over my head for too long, and fortunately this morning my manager said it was in good shape. I’m ready to have it off my plate — just a few loose ends to tie up today. I also finished and blocked a baby blanket for my new cousin over the weekend, so lots of longer-term projects wrapping up.

I’ve been in a rose mood, so Molton Brown Rosa Absolute, the budget version of POAL this morning, it’s fruity raspberry is quite addictive and tonight Rose Amazone, a flanker I really like which is not talked about much and possibly discontinued now.

I’m wearing Ex Nihilo Devil Tender. It’s a very soft rose-peach scent. The softness is part of the notes, which I find interesting and a bit mysterious. I think it’s partly the heliotrope and it also must be the note they call “suede.” Whatever it is, I find it beautiful and comforting. It leans more summery than either winter or spring, so doesn’t really fit the CP.

I’ll do the fun winter/spring sample pull on Friday but otherwise just doing some thunks or wearing whatever feels right the rest of the week. Today I’m in Himitsu by Regime des Fleurs, which is a sample thunk. I really like it and would be interested in a travel spray if they made those. Alas, I don’t need 75ml of it and certainly not for $240.

I spent the day in Belle Ame, a really nice iris by Antoine Lie. And for going to bed, a spray of Gourmand Coquin again. Iris, cacao and benzoin are carrying me through January.

I’m reading the book by one of the survivors from the Andes plane crash after watching the movie La sociedad de la nieve (Society of the snow). That story always fascinated me- how much we can resist in an extreme situation when there is determination, solidarity and hope. The latest movie is more than decent at capturing it (not so much the one done in the 2000).

SOTD = 4160 Tuesdays We’re Not Out of the Woods Yet EDP

Nice! So well-blended I couldn’t tease out the notes other than the dry-down which I perceived to be musky patchouli.

And peeps, I finally got the red velvet(een) pouch! It is luxurious and beautiful! The gold dragon is embroidered, not some decal that got sewn on!

Productive day today! Got rid of my golf clubs for a bit of cash, then had to get both gas for the car and groceries for me. I was reminded why I am staying home so often.

SOTD = my usual. Commando with a bit of Boyfriend Body Creme on my shins. I will not thunk it by the end of January, so continuing into February.

Speaking of spring and Jacinthe des Bois, hyacinth leaves are poking up in our garden already. Every year they sprout in late Jan., every year I worry they’ll be killed, every year they turn out alright.
