Thursday scent of the day 1/25

Posted by Robin on 25 January 2024 180 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also Opposite Day and Irish Coffee Day. Birthdays: Robert Burns, Virginia Woolf, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Etta James, Gloria Naylor. RIP Melanie. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in the fragrance I have worn the most while visiting the Caribbean, Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess.

Reminder: on 1/26, we're off to The Caribbean! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in The Caribbean, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to The Caribbean, or that features a local ingredient, or ?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello.
    Sotd is Amouage Beloved.
Woke up this morning with a sugar craving. Stopped myself from reaching for cookies and instead had oatmeal with brown sugar and honey with my tea.

Well done! When I’m craving sweets I find that perfume can cover the need, which is a nice secondary benefit of having a few too many gourmand choices (or so I like to tell myself 🙂

Well done. I, on other hand, made some ginger cookies I wanted to bake for Christmas but could not because we did not have a stove then. Good thing I am too lazy to bake often.

What an inspiring theme! It’s rainy and cold here in the UK and so tempting to do a mental escapade into tropical paradises. It’s funny how one craves these scents in late winter but leans towards refreshing ones in the summer (Mandarine Basilic being my top).

As usual in the season I’ve been leaning towards resinous ambers- I’m testing Lubin Kismet today and I’m totally blown away. Shalimaresque rose vanilla amber- it reminds me a bit of Millesime Iris, but better. I may love it even more intensely than Belle Ame which is my most recent purchase. I find them both joyous and ever so comforting. Gourmand-leaning resinous softly sweet scents.

My tropic evoking perfumes are usually big white florals and I love Moon Bloom and Dilettante for this as they transport me to a see side spa. Goutal Songes is my second choice.

    Happy Thursday, NSTers!

Divine. I’ve been smelling myself in delight all day. It’s getting better by the hour too! It seemed soft spoken on first spray but lasts and lasts with good sillage.

I’m liking Kismet so much! If I buy the bottle (likely) I could send you a decant 🙂 it’s also in Fortnum and Mason.

I am in Berdoues Hoja de Cuba. Aurora, I must say that today Hoja de Cuba does not smell much like Maasai Mara. It is a slightly sweet tobacco, but it lacks Maasai Mara’s fruitiness.

In other news, I did three pages of my website: Home, Services and About. Two to go, plus navbar and footer.

Five. Home, Services, About, Samples (or Portfolio – I have not quite decided how to name this one) and Contact.

Hoja de Cuba is pretty nice, but it fells a bit unfinished. Must be good for lyaering, though.

Today I’m in L’Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme, which I love because it’s all little spikes and jagged edges that somehow coalesce into something soft and warm and enveloping — it’s like looking at a screen close-up where all you can see is square pixels, but you back away and suddenly it resolves into a coherent image. I think I’ve gotten more compliments on this that anything else I own, which is saying something. (What a shame they eventually put it into the comparatively boring house bottle, because the 2004 original was a work of art all by itself, like the scent it houses a collection of little details that coalesce into a harmonious whole.)

I thought about you yesterday … well, everyday. Anyway, I read an article about how an Emergency Room is better than Urgent Care if one suspects a more serious issue because the UC workers may not necessarily be the equivalent of board-certified and may not necessarily diagnose the worse. What are your thoughts?

Well. EMERGENCY rooms of for serious illness. Life threatening and severe. So, by definition, those working in ER’s will have additional skill sets to meet those critical illness. But that doesn’t mean URGENT care folks are better or worse. Some PA’s, NP’s, and MD’s work both. But URGENT care is for non-life threatening illness. Cough, cold, sprains, etc. It’s hard for people to tell the difference sometimes. I worked at an urgent care years also and a women arrived who thought she had the flu. Weakness, malaise, sob. Turns out she was in 3rd Degree heart block and got a lights and sirens ride to the nearest ER. 🚨🚑🚨

However, Deva is right. Too many people run to the Emergency Room when it isn’t necessary. If the person knows it is something not serious, it is better to go to Urgent Care.

This week I’ve paid most attention to the perfumes I’ve sprayed at bedtime ( has this ever been a CP, favourite bedtime scents?). I don’t know why, but choosing a scent at bedtime is part of a ritual I love. I go to bed early ( because I get up so early) and at the moment it’s still light outside , dusk until after 10pm, so I lie with the window open listening to the last bird song of night ( the tui) and the wind in the trees. Abel Pause has always been good, Mitsuoko , Lush Shade , Chypre Mousse, Jicky, Gris Clair and last night Rahat Loukhoum. Imagine my pillow with the blend of all these. It’s magic. Wearing Rahat Loukhoum today

Vintage Vol de Nuit used to be my go-to bedtime scent, but for some reason I’ve been doing scentless bedtimes for quite a while now. Maybe it had something to do with the insomnia issues, and not wanting to complicate the experience…

Deeply envious of your nighttime ritual, tui song included. I live in a suburban area, but I’m
very excited when I hear a tawny owl hooting.

Bedtime scents are the best and Rahat Loukhoum sounds perfect for that. Never tried the SL but a Keiko Mecheri Loukhoum decant was thunked in bed time prep rituals. I’ve been using Gourmand Coquin and Belle Ame a lot before bed lately. Needing all the comfort.

I’m in Tam Dao from my newly arrived bottle!🤩 My aunt sent me money for my bday earlier this month and I immediately knew what I was getting.

Hajusuuri, you mentioned recently that Northern Exposure was streaming on Prime. Have you started watching? We watched the pilot the other night with madtownteen. As soon as that intro music started playing I was instantly transported back to the early ‘90s. A simpler time of pre internet and cellphones. Sigh. It was a hit with the teen who fully admitted she didn’t think she’d like it but was then laughing out loud during several scenes. How has it taken this gem this long to be added to a streaming service?!

Oh, Lost! I loved that show sooo much I binged the entire series the summer leading up to the last season (on my tiny iPod screen😂). And that last season, oof, what a huge disappointment. For me anyway. I can still remember watching the final episode with tears streaming down my face because I was just crushed at how it was ending. I felt depressed for days after that.

I was so mad at how they ended Lost. All those lose ends (like the statute) dangling after they had promised to tie them together. I have somewhat forgiven Damon Linedlof because The Leftovers was so good — at least with that I felt the loose ends were meant to be unanswered mysteries, not just red hearrings or storylines they lost sight of/interest in.

As to a reason why it takes a long time for a series to show up on streaming services, I understand that it is because of the need to obtain rights to air the music. I’m almost positive that if the rights are not given after so many attempts, the streaming service is allowed to (or prohibited from) airing the specific music. I would love to be behind the scenes of streaming services because I am curious about things that add, at best, anecdotal value but somehow makes me feel more accomplished.

This week was a difficult week for me and my family since we lost my father in law. The weekend we have the memorial ceremony, he was really a special person, had a big presence in the family, always joking and smiling even though he had a very tough life, helping everyone who needed his assistance. I feel like he knew everybody in Montreal and in Istanbul.

I am taking points with Jil Sander No4, which has a hefty tuberose note on my skin, plus a bunch of other florals too. I cannot wear this very often, but its a good one if i crave it (and i got this used bottle with 10ml left for just 1Euro, so this was cheaper than chips…).

I’m wearing a sample of Memo Russian Leather. It is evaporating on me and I had planned to thunk it, but I guess it is concentrating as it evaporates because, hooboy, it is strong. Worn leather armchair in an evergreen forest on a cold day, but the herb patch next to it is still going strong. I really like it but more than two sprays would scent the house. If memo did travel size or small bottles I would seriously consider this a “home” scent for my truck

Tea today is a mild ceylon. I’m feeling a cold coming on and wanted something gulpable to help my throat.

I’m in Hypnotic Poison, just because I passed a Sephora while running errands and wanted to try it. I have never been to the Caribbean. Need to rectify that.

Despite all my efforts to work out and to get the morning light on walks, and to avoid blue light in the eve, and to avoid most caffeine, etc, etc., I am just not sleeping well. Feeling a little dejected about that.

SOTD = 4160 Tuesdays Hush Hush EDT

Nice light iris violet … did not last long on me. I also have the EDP and the parfum. The Hush Hush series was conducted in collaboration with @smurfygurly. Someone had asked which formulation I liked the best. While they are all good, I prefer the parfum, then the EDP and then the EDT.

I have decided to proceed with my cruise – I am excited!

The other day, I read an article about a plane that had to turn back to Phoenix (I believe flight was to Austin, TX) because of an “excessively farting passenger” and all the other passengers “all breathed a sigh of relief”. I won’t say if I myself snorted out several orifices. Ha! I didn’t but the article was quite funny. 😆
