Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, mid-to-late January 2024

Posted by Robin on 20 January 2024 227 Comments

Saturday is Penguin Awareness Day and Sunday is International Sweatpants Day.

We're celebrating all of it with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your favorite "fight the chill" perfume, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Ugh. Have to work all weekend due to laptop issues this past week and taking off Thur & Fri this coming week to visit family. Trying to get motivated. Perhaps one of the raisin walnut brioche’s from the bakery down the block would help! 😋

Wearing Rose 31 body lotion, not only a beautifully scented lotion, but incredibly moisturizing. On my 2nd bottle.

Any other Le Labo scented lotions to recommend?

The super cold weather is such a bummer. I do most of my exercise, well all of it really, outdoors. Between the icy sidewalks and frigid temps I’m not getting the activity I know my body needs. Will layer up for a walk later today, nevertheless.

    Stay warm!

I am getting sick of the super cold weather too. We are supposed to see a warming trend tomorrow. We will actually be in the 20’s and 30’s this week. Stay warm.

Your lotion sounds really nice 🌹

I actually like the cold weather, but not day after day after day. I need some relief. And I also need the four seasons.

I think raisin walnut brioche would always help. I love the LL Jasmin 17 lotion, although I see it is out of stock on their site currently. Good luck with all the work.

The one upside is that if no one else is working, you get more done. But on the flipside, definitely hard to motivate yourself on the weekend!

Penguin Awareness Day? Good time to wear Mugler Alien, then.

But I’m in nineties Old Spice, carnations and herbs and gasoline up top, then this luxurious vanilla. It’s so incredibly good, particularly on this cold, windy, snowy day. We headed out to walk to the library but the wind was like knives of ice so we bailed and went to the supermarket instead (five minutes on foot, doable even in terrible weather: the library is closer to twenty minutes and that was a nonstarter).

    Happy weekend.
I am off to a bad start though. A case of shivers and chills so bad I clenched my jaws so tightly I thought my teeth were going to crack. Then there’s the whole body ache and splitting headache and nausea. Ugh. Take care, stay warm and healthy everybody!
I am scent-free at the moment but if I was to wear a scent it would be Shalimar MI.
My “fight the chill” perfume is Ambre Sultan. My all time favourite amber, strong enough to cut through the cold.

Did the COVID test and thank goodness it was negative. Then I went to the doctor’s and he said take some Panadol and rest and “monitor”. So I spent the whole day in bed. Followed your advice and had 2 bowls of hearty chicken soup. No solids because my stomach can’t seem to handle them well at the moment.

    SOTD = Dior Mitzah

Excellent spicy, semi-sweet amber vanilla patchouli. ❤️ I really do need to wear it more often!

I mentioned this on the IG post that I am burning candles more frequently these days because I have many and they sure do look nice. The one I recently started to burn was a double-wick Jonathan Adler candle:

That photo is just about what it looks like here. We have today and tomorrow in the deep freeze and then temps will head back into the 30s. My daughter and I swung downtown to get a latte for me and hot cocoa for her from my favorite coffee shop. The capitol looked so beautiful against the blue sky. When the warmer temps return, so will our gray skies.😞 We can’t have our cake and eat it too during winter in the midwest. Sigh.

Back in Bal d’Afrique and still trying to make a dent in neglected fragrances that have seen better days. It’s been a fun project.

The mini split has been installed in my perfume “fort” but now we’re thinking we should paint while everything is out of the closet. That means more perfume and shelf moving but it will be worth it to have freshly painted walls.

I’m kind of on board with the international sweatpants day because when I was at Costco the other day I bought a pair of joggers, not sweat pants per sé, but made of cool, quick-dry fabric. Liked them so much when I wore them I just ordered four more pair. Like wearing upscale pajamas! 👍🏼

SOTD it Initio Side Effect. Maybe one more use. I’ll have to open the decant bottle and dump the last dribble to finish it off. I’ve really enjoyed this one, but NO MORE big bottles allowed! Especially essspensive Big Bottles! Big Bottles are defined as anything over 15-20mls by my current standards, which of course can change at a moments notice. 🤭

We’re in the Superstition Mountains for a few days, just east of Phoenix. So wonderfully quiet at night! The Apache Trail goes right by here and the drive quickly gained elevation and has a lot of hairpin turns. Zero guardrails. Was just talking to a guy who drove his big 🍑 Class A up here! I had to ask him “HOW?!” He said he has a friend in a truck that precedes him and stops any traffic so he can make the turns. Bold Move! 😬

Hope the sick folks are feeling better!

One of the best things about aging, for me personally, is not giving a hood god dam* about so many things I used to be so anxious about when I was younger. Really, besides the aches and pains and slower healing rate, I love being “old.”

Wow, we’re actually suffering from the heat here, that’s quite unusual in Wellington. It’s been really warm and humid, and it’s not cooling down much overnight. Our usual problem is keeping the house warm, so our only cooling option is opening the windows, and that’s been a bit tricky as it’s also been very windy.
In perfume news, your shameless enablement last weekend led me to buy another of the Patou Heritage Collection 🙂 . I have Chaldée, Colony, Deux Amours, L’Heure Attendue and now Adieu Sagesse! Would I have bought any of them if I could have sampled them first? Maybe not, but they are all very wearable, they weren’t expensive and I’m glad I have them.

No Vacances? That’s my favorite although I haven’t tried many of them. I have that one in fb thanks to an NSTer who sent me a decant which prompted the bottle purchase. The irony is I have the decant to a close friend which then prompted HER to buy a full bottle 😜

I broke down and bought Chaldee unsniffed, and am glad I did. I’m trying to forget about the others, but if space and skin time weren’t an issue, I would probably buy those unsniffed, too. Few reincarnations are done as well as these Jean Patous!

In addition to friends, and if you haven’t already, you might want to reach out to your doctor, just to let them know that you are feeling low and low energy. A primary care doctor can often be a good first step to getting the help you need (the help we all need from time to time😊).

I wanted a heavy- hitter for the cold today, so I’m in SL Cuir Mauresque.

I have a perfume question: I’ve started putting my BUBs and some out of season scents in our back-up fridge. Is that bad?

Non-related question: I’ve recently started going to a new dentist, and during a procedure recently, the dentist and hygienist chatted to each other the entire time! I found it very annoying; have never experienced this before. Is this a common practice now?

Smelling fabulous in that Uncle Serge! 😍 I don’t think putting bottles in the fridge will have a negative effect on the perfumes. My disclaimer is that I have no science to back this up, but I think a lot of people do this for a variety of things- skin care, perfumes, creams, lotions, etc. As for the last issue, I know some people who work on other people (healthcare, dentistry, masseuses) as a career begin see people not as individuals, but as objects. Like a chair or a table. I’ve seen this in the medical field a lot. I think it’s very sad because basically you’re denying that individual their personhood and humanity.

I’m trying to think if I’ve experienced that before at the dentist. I’ve spent a lot of time in the dental chair. There might be a bit of chitchat, but mainly it’s just for the procedure. I think that would be unsettling for me to hear people talk about stuff other than the work they’re doing. Makes you wonder if they’re really focused on your teeth!

It was that a bit, but mostly because I don’t like loud voices, and the dentist was, necessarily, talking right into my ear! 😠
It was like being on the subway , when two people come in, sit on either side of you, and continue their loud conversation. I think it’s rude.

My dentist does chat regularly with the assistants when I’ve been worked on. It alarmed me at first, exactly for the same reason. Are you concentrating on what you are doing? Thankfully in my case, my dentist is very competent.

He told me once that when he was a kid, he had the curiosity to take things apart and put them back together at a very early age. He thinks that trait led him to becoming a dentist.

I’ve seen a lot of different dentists over the decades and not had that happen. If you’re happy with the dentist in other respects, I’d tell him it’s hurting your ears.

I’ve had some perfumes in my fridge for more than a decade and they seem fine. The one thing to be careful about is that some of the ingredients with higher melting points might solidify, making the perfume cloudy and probably not spraying or staying mixed properly. So unless I can see that they are still very clear, I let them warm up before spraying.

    Orange and yogurt smoothie again

Had disturbing dream and woke up early but relieved it was all unreal, I love that realization. Weather here in the UK is very tranquil and I hope the cold snap in the US will soon ease up, compassion for those experiencing heating woes.

Testing side by side Oriza L. Legrand Héliotrope Blanc and Réminiscence Héliotrope, both are lovely (Rem more gourmand, HB more floral) which is just as well as I have 100ml bottles of them.

My sniffer may not be 100%. Woke up w/ a sore throat a few days ago then developed a headache and chills…thought I might wake up the next day quite sick and was nervous w/ all the bad stuff going around. But the following morning I actually felt a bit better and have been improving since. An aborted cold or virus that couldn’t fully entrench I guess. 🤷‍♀️ I tested twice for Covid but was negative. No one else in House She-ra reports illness yet. 🤞🏻

I went to the swap meet at Arielle Shoshana today and had fun seeing what everyone brought, running into an old perfume friend I hadn’t seen in ages, and making a new perfume friend.

When I left and got into the cab, though, I realized I was saturated with perfume, despite not having tested anything on skin!

Even after changing clothes, if I get up from my computer chair and go away for a few minutes, I find the air around the chair is still perfumed when I return! Just from being around all the spritzing of scent strips!

This mingled aroma is surprisingly harmonious — perhaps the core base notes of most modern perfumes are the same?

The shop is modern and spare but with some colorful paint on some of the walls that echoes the colors of the house perfume brand. There’s a comfy seating area around a low table where people can relax and try a selection of scents. Fragrances are organized by scent category rather than brand.

It’s a lovely, relaxing shop, and of course Ari and her staff are so knowledgeable and can deftly help customers find the scents that are just right for them. (Of course, if you prefer to browse on your own, they won’t bother you.)

They also encourage people to take samples home and try them at leisure to make a final decision, if they want. There’s no pressure to buy.

I hope you get a chance to visit someday!

How fun!! I am visiting DC in 2 weeks and am planning to visit Arielle Shoshana (used to follow her blog way back when, and have thought about visiting her shop for years now). Wish I could’ve attended the swapmeet.

SOTD so far SJP Stash. This and Angel Muse are the best deals I ever found at TJ Maxx/Marshall’s/Ross (no longer remember which). Haven’t seen anything exciting at those places in years and years, though TBH I’m not haunting them even monthly.

SJP is the only celebrity I have fragrances from, too, though it’s not like I’ve tried many.

I scored Kiehls musk at Marshall’s years ago but rarely find much and try to avoid walking to the perfume section so I am not tempted. I think they have had to secure the perfumes there now and it was never possible to sniff them anyway so only good if it is something you already know you like.

I HAVE scored lots of lotions and soaps at Marshall’s.

Oh, I forgot I’d been meaning to describe my new perfume sample storage.

    This is my setup:

Houses for which I have a huge collection of samples get their own labeled box. Most of these are re-used Olfactif boxes that are approx 4×6 inches x 10mm thick, with a lovely magnetic flap lid. Love them. Don’t subscribe to Olfactif anymore, alas.

Everything else goes into 4×6 inch mylar zip baggies, one bag per house I have multiple samples, and the random single samples go in a bag with other singles, one bag per letter of alphabet. These are filled alphabetically by house name, using 4×6 inch divider tabs and boxes made for 4×6 inch index cards (the boxes are about a foot deep, so they hold a lot).

SOOO much easier to find something now. I do keep ones I am actively sampling or planning to sample in a little tray.

There is of course also a spreadsheet.

Impressive, and many good tips here! I started out using cryo boxes with dividers, but it’s a wee bit tedious and I’ve gotten way behind. I may adopt some of your tactics.

      Thanks for sharing!

Waving hello to everyone! I pop in from time to time. No longer blogging, but still scented.

This is our fourth day of cold in the teens (Fahrenheit), and BRRRRR. I’ve been wearing Black Cashmere, SL La Myrrhe, and CocoaPink’s Triple Vanilla Dream — which is more to my taste than any of the other vanilla-focused scents I’ve ever tried, including SDV. (Bonus: it’s relatively inexpensive.)

Hi everyone, new here but used to lurk often a long time ago (pre 2016)… I am just getting back into perfume, so I haven’t kept up with releases from the past 7-8 years. But very excited to get back into this hobby…!

Today I’m not wearing anything. My partner and I are going to a Broadway show tonight (for the first time!) and planning to stop at Saks before the show to sample some fragrances. I’m hoping to try some scents from DS&Durga and Ex Nihilo since they are brands I hadn’t heard much about pre-hobby hiatus.

My early 2000 bottle of Carnal Flower is still in decent shape but showing age (much like it’s owner😬) so I spritzed last night and can smell it faintly this morning.

I watched an interesting interview with Frederic Malle on Scentbird and it was fun to sniff along while he talked about the process of creating Carnal Flower.

SOTD is Donna Karan Chaos. I needed something warm and spicy to cope with the fact that our furnace is struggling to keep the house above 18C.

Another thing that warms my soul is to return here after a very long hiatus (like 10 years!😮) to find this wonderful source of knowledge and joy still in operation. I’m beyond thrilled!

2 weeks ago opened a stashed bag of samples, tried Jubilation 25 woman and… Died and was reborn. It’s NOT a perfume. It’s beyond addiction, it’s air I want to breathe. As I watched my sample get emptied, ordered another one. Used that one up only to have the remnants of it hang on for several days (and showers!!) after. Any wiff of it freshly applied, or days past last application – sent me so much joy like nothing ever before. When I ran out completely, I tried to revive myself with first Gold woman (which is a perfect no. 2 scent right after Jubilation 25) and finally Dia which is great and great quality but not even close to the first too. I reordered like 5 more samples of Jubilation 25 – one lasts a long way but my first and second one were a low fill. Meanwhile I also bought a mini of Honour Woman and samples of Lilac Love and Epic Woman. Really enjoyed Lilac Love and Epic Woman. I would love to own Epic Woman and Lilac Love and Gold Woman in my collection eventually. But first and foremost I ordered a bottle and a whole travel set of Jubilation 25 as well as the 5 samples!!!! It will last me a lifetime… So in love with it… Today on Sunday…….. Yayyyy!! The mail lady came and dropped off 2 Amouage Jubilation 25 samples… My hands were shaking when I was opening the package… This has never happened before with a perfume…. I am Finally wearing some again!!!! I wanna dance💐, I wanna hug everybody I am just in bliss!!!! Oh while ordering full size products of Jubilation 25 Woman (travel set and FB) I thought it all out. I had been contemplating because two perfumes I called holy grails in the past were also available for purchase: Kilian Imperial Tea left overs at a good (good in today’s times of its rarity) price or another bottle of Vagabond Prince Swan Princess – I have a full bottle that I won’t open. I love the fragrance so much I willingly want to keep and treasure an unopened bottle of it. Yesterday before purchasing full size products with Jubilation 25 – I sprayed Swan Princess one one arm and Imperial Tea on the other (from samples I keep around) and… The imperial tea smelled like the most perfect tea and jasmine. Or the perfect jasmine tea in perfume. 30mins later it evaporated. I would have bought that partial bottle with happiness but… I don’t have the financial means right now to buy every single thing I would like to own. Swan Princess smelled amazing and Devine – perfect runner up to Jubilation 25 – but I really and truly had to answer myself throughout the day several times – yes Jubilation 25 is… The best. Although Swan Princess lasted a lot of hours in a way that most perfumes out there cannot perform to be honest. But yeah nothing beats Jubilation 25 Woman for me. Anyway I’m glad my two samples of it arrived today and I am happily wearing it today!!

Oh yes. I’m truly just so happy. This was not expected by me. I just tried the Amouage because I had the samples in the bag, really. I never even put my mind into “wanting” to like it. I never expected for an absolute perfection to occur. The aldehydes, the lemon, yes not orange but lemon. The sparkly opening. The hang-forever incensey vanilla to follow me everywhere I go. Not to even mention the class. Super happy with this.

I haven’t put on perfume yet today as I sleep in until almost 9:30 and have since been relaxing in my reading chair, taking turns reading a book and reading things on my phone. With a couple cups of coffee to fuel me, of course. But since I still smell remnants of last night’s Fzotic Corpse Reviver that I put on after my shower, I might go with Cadavre Exquis, which was created by Bruno F and Antonio Gardoni (perfumer primarily of Bogue) and was the inspiration for Bruno to make Corpse Reviver.

Yesterday was a very nice day because we had good weather for the first time in many weeks. Sun and 48 degrees! So I sprayed on and thunked a sample of Regime des Fleurs Rock River Melody, which was green and perfect for a mid-winter relatively warm day in the PNW, and my partner and I ventured out for a trip to a nearby bakery and a walk in my favorite park before picking up some takeout for an early dinner. My favorite kind of day. We were also lucky to spot a bald eagle flying low overhead for just a moment. They’re so impressive to see close up. At the park we and many others were delighted by a flock of ducks sliding around a mostly frozen but dethawing pond. It was so silly to watch. A couple ducks flew in and landed on the pond by sliding on the ice reminiscent of a plane landing. Just a simple pleasures kind of day that was much needed.

Sounds like such a relaxing weekend complete with bakery and a walk. Isn’t it incredible when the sun comes out this time of year? You can smell the Sarcoccoca blooming and anticipate our favorite, the Daphne!🌸

We enjoyed yesterday’s sun too and got out on our bikes. Today is a cozy taking down the Christmas tree day (it’s always hard for me to part with it!).

Yes, I’ve so been enjoying the sarcococca blooming the last couple of weeks! It felt like such a relief to have plant blooms to smell again. And thanks for putting a name to the plant as I always forget what it’s called but very much enjoy its scent.

I’m glad you got to enjoy a bike ride yesterday. 🙂

Chilly and cloudy and cold for here – but better than weather elsewhere, it seems.

I didn’t exercise today, couldn’t face cold, wet weather. Doing some indoor chores with a white chili in the slow cooker. Wearing jeans which are my comfort pants more than sweatpants. I have collection of jeans including classic 501’s, some other raw denim in various stages of maturation and a pair of vintage 501 men’s jeans I have to belt.

Pulling out all my cold weather perfumes in the past week, did a bunch of incense and spice including Black Cashmere. Today, I am taking it easy in good-for-all-seasons Commodity Gold.

    Stay cozy!
