Friday scent of the day 1/19

Posted by Robin on 19 January 2024 198 Comments

Happy Friday and happy 78th to Dolly Parton! (More birthdays: Edgar Allan Poe, Paul Cézanne, Patricia Highsmith, Julian Barnes, Janis Joplin, Edwidge Danticat.) Our community project for today: our theme is Dolly Parton, do what you like with it!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Kris pointed out yesterday that there is a hybrid rose named after Dolly Parton, plus she likes (yellow) roses. I'm in The Perfumer's Workshop Tea Rose, the rose in my collection that seemed like the best fit.

Reminder: on 1/26, we're off to The Caribbean! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in The Caribbean, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to The Caribbean, or that features a local ingredient, or ?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m in Dame Chocolate+ Rose. I think Dolly would appreciate a gift of her favorite chocolates and a bouquet of lovely smelling roses.

La Chasse, again, and a spritz of Carnal FLower. Dolly likes glamour and CF is a bit glamorous.

We lived in a rural community when I was growing up, and when I heard a song I liked on the radio I assumed the radio station went to Pizza Delight next door, and fished out Dolly, or Linda Rondstandt, or Waylon and Wille, and got them to sing. I thought all those artists just waited there eating pizza until it was their turn on the radio. Can’t believe I’m telling you this 🙂

Hi all! Thank you for all your kind words this week. I am happy to report that today I finally woke up without fever. My throat also feels almost normal. So I am much, much better and even decided to participate in the CP.

I dabbed a few drops from my vintage mini EL Private Collection, matching it with Dolly Parton’s song “The Bargain Store”. There is an obvious connection with finding vintage stuff in a bargain store, but I actually thought about how melancholy and beautiful both the song and the scent are. I do not normally listen to country music, but this song makes me tear up.

“Take these old used memories from the past
And these broken dreams and plans that didn’t last
I’ll trade them for a future, I can’t use them anymore
I’ve wasted love but I still have some more”

I’m wearing fun things all week because doesn’t Dolly seem like a genuinely fun person? Today I’m in just about the funnest thing I know, nineties-vintage YSL Yvresse edt, an old-school chypre but light-hearted and effervescent. It’s a good mood in a bottle.

Dolly’s one of the stars of 9 to 5…am wearing vintage No 19 edt because nine’s in the name. Noticed the IFC cable station is running a thon of Steel Magnolias and 9 to 5 today. It’s back to super cold, so I anticipate catching some 9 to 5 snuggled under a blanket.

Dolly makes me think of Frédéric Malle Lipstick Rose because of makeup and glamour. But, since I don’t have that perfume anymore instead I’m going with Malle’s Eau de Magnolia for the movie Steel Magnolias in which Dolly played a wonderful character named Truvy.

    Hello everyone!

I came back from Boston just in time for a hard freeze down here in Texas. Luckily our power and our water stayed on for the duration. It was a pretty busy week besides, as my classes have started. Keep me in your thoughts!

I’m not sure what perfumes Dolly would approve of but Chamade has been calling my name this week.

I was really trying to be good on my perfume purchases, but of course I wandered into an antique store while in Providence, where my friend’s family has a house. I found a veritable treasure trove while I was there! I was looking and was stunned to see a bottle of Paprika Brasil, 75% full, just sitting there. The shop owner could tell I was excited (PB is/was my favorite Hermessence, at least in terms of most worn) so he showed me all the perfume he hadn’t put out yet. 90% was Hermes, and in the last box I pulled down… an 85% full bottle of Osmanthe Yunnan. Another favorite! I spent less on those two bottles combined than one of the Choose 4 sets, so I was very happy. I found a bit more to take home but nothing excited me like those Hermessences.

    Stay safe everyone!

Dolly looks better at age 78 than I did at age 25, no joke!

I’ve been a complete failure at the CP this week (and many other weeks!😎) so I’m just going with my gut and wearing Ummagumma today because #1) It’s fabulous! #2) It’s been mentioned a lot this week, and #3) It’s fabulous!

79F when I left Tucson yesterday! Maybe it’s a good thing I’m going up the country. Can’t imagine what it’s going to be like in a month. 🥵 Currently near Phoenix and will be here until next week. Sad to say, many of the places, casinos included, have stopped allowing free overnight parking. I’m at the only casino I could find and about 50 truckers and RVers kept me company last night. 🚛

Just drove my son to work in 29F & the snow still coming down…. He was going to drive himself but has never driven in snow and I talked him out of it. An accident for a male in their 20s is way more costly than for an old female.

Luckily very few people driving about.

I’m wearing White Diamonds today, both because the general sparkly-ness suits Dolly’s star persona and because I think a young, coat of many colors era Dolly Parton could have appreciated a smooth, classy floral that was widely available for a good price.

I’m going with Saturday today, because it’s the brightest, most fun perfume I have and seems like a match for Dolly’s happy, sparkly personality. Also the pink and yellow on the bottle seem right.

We’re digging out from two snow days today; it started raining last night, but there’s still a lot of snow on the ground. At least the roads are okay, finally. I also survived a massive government program deadline at work last night (we had to change over all our info and take down pages at midnight), which I’m happy about (nothing broke and despite all the gloom & doom in the press, the economy hasn’t collapsed and restaurants seem still to be in business 🙂 ). So Saturday’s a good fit for that, too!

Thanks to everyone who sent Restoration of Electricity vibes my way. The weather finally let us get back to our house yesterday, and the power was back on and most of the house seems to be fine … but a pipe burst in the ceiling between our garage and an upstairs bathroom, and a literal waterfall was gushing down onto the storage shelves in the garage. Damage is mostly in the garage, thankfully, but we had to shut the water off at the main so the house is not inhabitable and we’re back in my folks’ apartment. Freezing rain expected again today so I’m not sure we’ll be able to get back over there to start clean-up operations just yet, but we’re on several plumbers’ waiting lists and have a contractor teed up to at least assess the damage. Le sigh.

Anyway, I’d have to reverse-engineer a tie-in to Dolly for the CP, and I’m just not up to it. At the moment I’m in the Francesca Bianchi lingering in the cuffs of my shirt. Perfume is comforting, isn’t it. 🙂

My connection to the CP is a bit loose today, but I’m wearing what I’m in there mood for so there’s that. 😉 I’m in Mad et Len Petits Papiers for the paper note and association with Dolly’s work with literacy. It would have been more on the nose to wear In the Library from my partner’s bottle. I will be able to thunk this Petits Papiers decample soon, maybe even today if I reapply. It seems there are no more bottles to be found if it, which is just as well because I don’t need any more bottles!

Perfumers workshop Tea Rose was my mom’s signature – I have her bottle but just can’t wear it. I’ll sniff it today though. I chose Tocade (who remembers Mals name for this – “that slut Tocade”?) Both the slightly OTT bottle and the rose seemed to fit for Dolly.

I’m wearing Ummagumma mostly because people have mentioned it and I like it, but it also works for the cp – DP born in Tennessee, Tennessee grows tobacco.

However, truth be told, I earlier swiped my sample of Caravanserail on the other arm. Caravanserail has been growing on me. Very unique and feels like an adventure–like the time way back in 1981, when I went off the beaten track into Morocco to meet a peace corps worker-friend I had just met at a youth hostel in Spain.

      You smell wonderful!

I may have mentioned it at least once here. The huts where tobacco leaves are sent to cure smell really bad just before they actually truly dry. I went into one such hut and had to come out immediately because the stench of ammonia was so strong my eyes immediately watered as soon as I walked in.

Dolly is on record as having said, “I used to squash up honeysuckle blossoms to make perfume.” So I had all kinds of CP plans for Demeter Honeysuckle. But the contents my ancient bottle had entirely evaporated. And I sent away all my other honeysuckle frags to better homes last year. Nothing else I have even seems to have a buried honeysuckle note.

So I finally landed on Hermes Un Jardin sur le Toit because notes of grass, magnolia, and rose are all Dolly appropriate. And because it is extremely cheerful and accessible, but also more subtle and more carefully put together than it might seem on first casual sniff. Which also seems to me to fit the brief.

Memo Winter Palace — because “I Will Always Love You” has been going through my head all week, and that’s how I feel about this fragrance. I have similar feelings about some others, but haven’t worn WP in awhile and that period of separation seems to fit the poignancy of the song. (For the record, I’m not abandoning WP, but we haven’t been spending as much time together as we once did.)

Here is an article about writing that song (for those who don’t know the story):

Hi all, on Wednesday I began to feel sick and yesterday I tested positive for Covid. Yuck. A friend had called me to say she was positive, and we’d had lunch together on Saturday. I managed to get Paxlovid yesterday plus some other typical cold-flu remedies, so I hope it will get better soon. This time I have been much sicker than when I had it around a year ago. I’m having some weird taste issues, mainly with anything acid-y like tomatoes or juice. So far I can still smell, technically, except that my nose is so blocked up. My doctor said to take long hot steamy showers. (“Steamy” took my mind somewhere else, ha ha!). To extend my showers I’m applying my Delina body wash and so I will say that the pink roses in it are my tribute to Dolly.

I woke up this morning thinking of the song “Coat of Many Colors,” and remembering hearing it on the radio when I was little, and my dad asking me what I thought of it, and talking a bit about Dolly Parton having grown up poor and the song being very personal. So I listened to it while getting ready this morning and wondered if I had a ‘multicolored’ perfume that would match, but when I went through the perfume closet each fragrance so clearly had one and only one color associated with it. So, I’m in Imogen Rose, which seems suitable somehow — it’s a tender (and very pink) rose, designed in honor of the perfumer’s little girl, and it’s also the security blanket I need after a very challenging week.

She called me on Wednesday just to say hello but since she had not been out for several weeks (other than going to a doctor with a neighbor/friend), she had run out of perishable food (assuming she does not freeze them). I went out yesterday and got her a few things and I am glad I did because I would not want to be out there today!

Like some of you, I’m not a huge country music fan but I am a huge fan of Dolly – her talent, her philanthropy, and, most of all, despite all that and her glamour, her self-deprecating nature and ability to poke gentle fun at herself. To honor her today, I’m wearing her first fragrance, Scent from Above, layered over BBW’s Pink Cashmere body products from a few years ago, which add a much-needed ⛄️nice warmth and depth to what I think of as a pretty springtime floral.

And like many of you, we’ve had our share of bitter cold and snow this week, but the exciting news is that we also had 4 days of 🌞 in a row, and I can’t even remember when that last happened! It’s cold and cloudy today but the 🌞 keeps making attempts to make it a fifth day in a row🤞. Despite this, we’ve had several nice outings this week, free programs courtesy of our area libraries, including 2 yoga classes, the movie ‘Oppenheimer’ (excellent!), a dramatization of Agatha Christie’s life, and tonight’s astronomy program including info on the upcoming eclipse. Tomorrow is the Chicago Botanic Garden’s annual seed exchange, where we always get most of our seeds for the upcoming planting season free of charge, plus our first thoughts of Springtime 🌷🌿🪻🫛

As nature lovers, we have many bird feeders on our property and welcome all creatures to our backyard. A large hawk has been visiting us and, fortunately, we haven’t seen him at catch any of the small birds at our feeders. For the first time in the 4 decades I’ve lived here, we had a bird in our basement but, fortunately we opened the side door and he flew out (but I felt guilty forcing him to return to the cold). I sometimes let my indoor cats out onto our screened porch, and yesterday when they came back in, 😻had a frozen-stiff bird in her mouth. I’m guessing it got in thru a very small hole in one corner and couldn’t get back out again. 😿

Wishing everyone a nice weekend ahead with at least a little bit of 🌞to warm your ❤️!

Hoping that I catch at least a little bit of that upcoming solar eclipse this year. I had terrible luck with them in NJ.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes. It’s so nice of you (y’all). I was going to say I like “Islands in the Stream” but couldn’t think of any perfume to go with it. It seems so weird to me it was written by The Bee Gees, but when you listen to it, I guess you can really hear them in it.

I definitely could here it after I found out it was written by the Bee Gees.

The Bee Gees had their fingers in a lot of pies.

I seem to remember hearing that the Bee Gees wrote “Islands in the Stream” back in the day. It sounded rather weird at the time.

I know very little about Dolly Parton and couldn’t think of anything to match with her or her music. So I went with something to keep me warm on another chilly day: Shalimar, extrait de parfum.
Wearing it reminded me of that I got 5 Guerlain extraits at the same time, for not that much money ages ago, fortunately I love them all.

Popping in quickly to say that I am song twins with Isabella today. “Coat of Many Colors” was the first one that came to mind, although I must admit that “Lady Muleskinner” wasn’t far behind.

I sniffed a perfume sample today, but that was as close as I got. However, I think it would have worked for the CP. It was the current version of L’Interdit, which is a VBWF. Ms. Parton has always seemed like a Big White Flowers kind of gal.

SOTD = back in Boyfriend Body Creme on my shins. No dry skin there!

You sniffed great today😊I wore L’Interdit in college and it is indeed a VBWF!

I always sniff L’interdit when I am at Ulta. I love a VBWF myself.

Glad I got a bottle of this last year! I was really tempted to spritz a bit of it on. L’Interdit seems to play very nicely with Colorado’s climate.

Some of my scented candles smelled better in New Jersey…

I am sure you have mentioned it, but are you staying away from perfume for a reason?

Yes. Part of it is lack of desire to wear perfume. Part of it is what has been going on in my life and not wanting any perfume to get a negative association with this time. Between all the home improvement projects, selling the house, separating from Mr. Jalapeno, having Spooky kitty cross The Rainbow Bridge, and moving with Teflon to a new state it’s all been too much.

But at least I can manage a sniff of a sample or decant every so often.

I know it is not by business to even ask, but thanks for sharing. I think you did mention this.

It does make sense. Hope someday you will be able to enjoy perfume again.

A friend and I loved to sing songs from the Trio album so playing in my head today is “To know, know, know him, is to love, love, love him, and I do.”

Dolly is one of those people who touches other people deeply with her music and her generosity. To know her is to love (or at least appreciate) her.

Along with many NSTers, I have been searching for the right Dolly fragrance and I landed with Rauque, which apparently means “hoarse” in French. It seemed apropos for a singer. It also has a leather note which fits with the country motif and IMHO, to know this fragrance is to love, love, love it❤️

Some Parfum de Therese in the AM. It’s late afternoon now, I’ve just showered, and will don some L de Lolita Lempicka, because it’s pretty unobjectionable (going out this evening and will be carpooling to event), I’ve been craving vanilla, and this is still a better rendition of “Deep Dark Vanilla” than what DS&Durga managed (did another spray today and still awestruck by how boring it is).

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying everyone’s CP interpretations all week. This was such a good one!

I went with Blue Grass today. I figured it was appropriate for the CP, and besides, I recently bought a vintage mini of it.
