Thursday scent of the day 1/18

Posted by Robin on 18 January 2024 199 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also National Thesaurus Day, aka Peter Mark Roget’s birthday. More birthdays: AA Milne, Cary Grant, Philippe Starck. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Imaginary Authors Yesterday Haze. I'm sure it has some relationship to something about Dolly Parton and I'll think of what it is by the end of the day, hopefully.

Reminder: 1/19 is Dolly Parton's birthday! Do what you like with the theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Jolene - Dolly Parton (lyrics) [cropped] by Brett Jordan at flickr; some rights reserved. Only vaguely related extra reading: The reason why Dolly Parton called Bob Dylan a “weird buckaroo” at Far Out.

    Love the graphic!
I mentioned earlier this week that my daughter wears Coco Mademoiselle as her signature scent and she’s the biggest Dolly fan I know, so I’m wearing Coco Mad Intense today. Just an example, Dolly put out a few baking mixes in pink boxes with her face on the front; my daughter bought them all and has them displayed in her kitchen.

Did she get any of the Dolly perfumes yet? I saw one at tj Maxx and was tempted.

Like some others here, I caved last night and bought the dragon candle. I purchased it from the manufacturer’s website and got a free perfume sample. I’m looking forward to it and of course, the jar will be repurposed when the candle is complete. I’m holding NST responsible for this purchase because I was resisting right along with so many others, and then wham! People were weak and caved. I’m just following these examples! 😂

I’m wearing SL Un Bois Vanille again because it worked well yesterday and I’m wearing the same hoodie. I should have spritzed more though.

Finally signed a new contract, and hoping it’s the last, even though I think I say that every time. Had multiple interviews for positions in the SW, but the pay and ratios are absolutely atrocious, so I declined them. Anyway, I’ll be headed back to the PNW which I’m not mad about because by April and into May, it’ll be too hot here. I’ve also signed a summer contract with the USFS for camp hosting at a high elevation campground in Utah all summer starting in May. No internet, no hookups, very small campground in a fairly dense forest, bordering some red rock areas. I’m hoping that pans out with no hiccups. Time will tell.

Smell well y’all! Looking forward to getting my candle with inordinate delight!

Good to know. I talked to a friend of a friend about this before I hit the road. Retired couple who lived at home in Florida for 5-6 months and then work camped mostly in Wyoming all summer. He loved it. They had a huge fifth wheel they towed. Asked him what his biggest pet peeve was and without a seconds pause he said, “The shoddy state of the American highway system!” And he is NOT wrong! 😂

Aw, thanks for the bite of confidence. And you are absolutely correct about the higher elevation, one of the main reasons I applied for this location:

“The Ashley National Forest encompasses about 1.4 million acres in northeastern Utah and southwestern Wyoming. Of the total acres, 276,175 are High Uintas Wilderness.”

Did you read Cherry Ames Nurse books when you were young?
      Cherry Ames, Camp Nurse
My sister read them all and for our entire lives we have called her Cherry Ames or Sister Luke ( from The Nuns’ Story) depending on what she is doing.
Since she is heading back to Tanzania on a medical trip she is currently called Cherry Ames, Bush Nurse.
I am of course unemployed still but that candle…mmmmmmm
good for you to get it and a gift with it.

My mom kept all of her books for me: Cherry Ames, Nancy Drew, and Trixie Belden, (which was my favorite because she got to ride horses all the time), The Hardy Boys and some others I can’t remember. Wish I still had them safely stored somewhere.

Bush nurse sounds SO exciting! If I was younger, I would look into doing something like that because I’m sure it’s very rewarding.

As for your unemployment, I have fingers, toes, eyes, every single appendage crossed for you! T-Rex does too and that’s no easy feat for a four legged! 🐕

I’m sure that candle will be lovely, but honestly, it was pure frustration that made me spring for it. I just have no patience anymore with inefficiency, laziness, sloppy work ethic, redundancy, ad nauseum. I don’t know why I’ve become so intolerant. But just do your effing job! Really, in five years I might be living in a cave somewhere with hibernating bear to keep me company because no one can stand me! 🫠🧸

Your site is part of you pay of course, but you also get an ok hourly wage, but don’t have to do any on the maintenance, cleaning, etc. Would be good for someone who is a retired numbers person.

🤣 you just have me an idea that I should not count the candle as a perfume purchase because: 1) I don’t think I have ever counted it as such and 2) if NST enabled me, then it shouldn’t count

Basically you’re a referee, maid, garbage man, fire ring sweeper, greeter, and toilet cleaner. Doesn’t that sound fun..?! 😂Really, you’re in a campground, surrounded by other campers, and making sure people follow the rules. It’s 25-30 hours a week, you make your schedule and keep track of the hours you work. Primary focus on answering camper questions, making sure sites are clean and neat, people have actually paid the fee, and are in the right site, and keep the toilet clean. This is a remote, small 8 site campground off a rarely traveled 2 lane mountain road. No hookups, no water, no cell signal, one pit toilet, and miles of wilderness. Probably not most people’s cup of tea, but I know I’ll love the autonomy and peace and quiet. Rangers come by occasionally and are available by sat phone for problems, which I’m hoping to avoid! 👍🏼

Under the weather this morning from a minor infection, so took the morning off. I have to say, telemedicine, when it works well, is a thing of beauty. I had a response last night from a NP in under 5 minutes and a prescription in hand in under an hour!

Am wearing a dab of Byredo Inflorescence. Which has a magnolia note. It doesn’t get much more Southern U.S. than magnola. And it doesn’t get much more Southern U.S. than Dolly. So a point for me.

We recently saw a program at out local planetarium about life on the International Space Station. Any medical consultations the astronauts on the ISS receive is necessarily telemedicine, as there are no doctors on board. They have the capability to project a hologram of the doctor into the ISS so that it feels more like an actual live doctor visit.

Apparently there have been astronauts who were physicians, but not very many. Most of them typically have backgrounds in engineering. There are only 6 or 7 crew members on the ISS at any one time, so most of the time, there is no doctor on board. I do imagine, though, that an MD who wanted to become an astronaut might have an advantage in potentially being selected for a mission.

I was talking to a surgeon about, of all things, the Antarctic. I was surprised to learn that they (meaning physicians) recommend that researchers and scientists being sent into the field there all have cholecystectomies and appendectomies for preventative purposes prior to departure. Makes sense!

Gallstones, which are VERY common, lodged in your common bile duct can block your entire biliary tree. Liver, pancreas, gall bladder all drain into common bile duct. An obstruction requires urgent stone extraction, or potential for sepsis, liver failure, and other unpleasant outcomes, and emergent interventions are required, blah blah blah. Not something that can be handled at McMurdo station…a lap/chole for a healthy young person does have typical surgical risks, but generally, since there is no inflammation, scarring, or adhesions, it’s a very quick and safe surgery- with the caveat that all surgeries and anesthesia carry innate risks.

As a layperson with zero data on the subject, I’m surprised. Like, what are the rates of people getting infections in these organs under normal conditions? Or is the risk raised based on living in the Antarctic? Huh. Okay, avoiding Google. Don’t need to go down any rabbit holes tonight!

There is a rose bush named after Dolly Parton so I went with Byredo’s Rose of No Man’s Land today.

Snow and cold again today. Nice day for settling down with a book.

So far, I like it very much. This is my first time giving it a full wearing, as before it was just a dab on one wrist to test it out. I have not had good luck with Byredo before. I had Bal d’Afrique and Gypsy Water, and ended up swapping or giving them both away, as they had a really off-putting note in the drydown, but so far I do not get that from RoNML.

It’s Friday, we have a long weekend coming up, and my Luckyscent perfume samples finally escaped their never-ending travels around the US East Coast! I don’t know if my email to Luckyscent and their inquiry to the USPS were instrumental, but they were very helpful and my samples are now in Auckland.
Today is everything – warm and sticky and cloudy and windy, and we will probably also get sun and rain. I’m wearing Sortilège from Le Galion, it fits well anywhere.

Smoothie was a tea with lemon, I hope I’ll be able to sleep, it’s late to drink tea. I saw Rouge Nocturne this morning and it’s been a while, great combo rose/patchouli and the rose essence is lovely, so natural, I think it’s my favorite of this genre, not much connection to DP though and tonight another heavy scent, vintage 10 Corso Como, I remember how excited I was to see the list of ingredients, only alcohol, parfum and water. This has happened several times, unknowingly getting pristine vintage bottles, another notable was Aromatics Elixir which smells divine.

Wearing Akro Bake today, and pretty much all of this week. I moved my samples from a jumbled up box behind my desk to a jumbled up drawer on my desk, so theoretically I could sample something new or relatively new.

But it’s Chanel Boy and Akro Bake all week. I did mix it up with some Xerjoff Lira the other night at bedtime. And Chanel 1956 at bedtime.

P.S. When I was sampling it at Nordstrom recently and commenting about the beautiful lavender notes, the Chanel SA told me it doesn’t have a lavender note and that I must be smelling geranium. I should work there and get the discount!

The interview for the fellowship lasted an hour and a half. I have no idea how I did. Something else to worry about. I will hear back by next Friday if they want to keep me in the candidate selection pool.

Got Tom Lake by Anne Patchett for my car- yay that was a score at the library.

Dolly Parton has a huge literacy initiative to get books to underserved children, so that could be the connection with Imaginary Authors.

My entire family did it — my parents, my siblings, we all did our kids, many of my cousins have done it. We did find some 2nd cousins & such, which wasn’t the reason we did it.

I found out plenty of actionable health information, which was my primary reason for doing it. I am well aware that no way is my DNA “safe” but I figure I will probably be dead before anybody figures out anything nefarious to do with stolen online DNA.

Also if someone wants DNA from a particular person it is not that hard to get and it’s pretty cheap.

That’s exactly how I feel about the security aspect. If one of my relatives is a serial killer and they nab ‘em from my DNA, good. My garbage can is unlocked, plenty of DNA in there every week. And if they develop tech to engineer a pathogen to target my DNA, hey, I’d want to check out of the game, anyway. That’s not a world I want to try to b survive.

I’ve done both Ancestry and 23&Me. It’s really just been entertainment. No deep revelations or surprises.

Since we did it many years ago, it’s been interesting to see how the “heritage” calculations have changed over the years as their pool of data has gotten larger.

Both are more-or-less accurate to what I understood my heritage to be. 23&Me pinpointed some of my ancestry to a very, very small region of Switzerland, which I know to be accurate (assuming no milkmen in my tree) and tied to the branch that most recently moved to the US.

We were hoping for a “fun” surprise but did not get one.

We verified that we had some Ashkenazi heritage, which we assumed but did not know for sure, and that we did not have any of the problematic BRCA genes.

After reading through Dolly’s Wikipedia page over the weekend, I thought a tobacco perfume would be fitting since her father was a tobacco sharecropper. So today I went with a new one from Chris Rusak called Ochre that prominently features tobacco alongside hay absolute, saffron, ambergris, tonka, and sandalwood. I like it a lot!

That’s very interesting. I knew there was a reason I randomly grabbed a bottle of Frank 3 this evening and sprayed liberally – tobacco and Dolly!

I got it years ago at an Essenza garage sale – perfume math free so I had to buy it! It never would have been on my radar otherwise and I really enjoy it.

Productive day today! Picked up a few things I needed at Home Depot and checked out a local pet supply store. Teflon kitty is going to need refills on her food eventually, and it would be nice not to rely on Chewy.com for everything.

It was almost 50 degrees here earlier, but temperatures slipped on the proverbial banana peel and tumbled into the basement. The overnight low is supposed to be around 3 degrees F (that’s -16 C). Very thankful I have a LOT of thick wool socks.

SOTD = yeah, you all know what it is. Boyfriend Body Creme on my shins. Maybe I will actually wear perfume tomorrow? No promises, though.

      50 down to 3! That’s crazy!
      Is it going to snow?

Nope, no snow in the forecast here. Wild temperature swings are not unusual for Colorado weather.

Latest update I saw had the overnight temp getting to 6 or 7 degrees F instead of 3. Every little bit helps… 🥶

Yay for productive day. Sounds like Colorado weather agrees with you, amazing these highs and lows during the same day. Hope you have a good heating system.

My sinuses are the happiest they have been in years out here in CO. Hopefully I am saying the same thing in springtime, when all the pollen shows up. 🤧

I had to put another blanket on the bed last night. But I was toasty warm under those bedcovers! Flannel sheets are a Very Nice Thing to have out here.

HVAC seems to be up to the task. Not looking forward to my January heating bill, though!

Today was DS&Durga Deep Dark Vanilla, because the sample was on the kitchen table (got it with my bottle of LO Alambar that arrived earlier in the week).

What a dud. I barely got vanilla, and forgot I was wearing it minutes after I sprayed. I’ll give it one more shot, and massively overspray.

Just added some Les Indemodables Vanille Havane, which is so much more worthy of the “Deep Dark Vanilla” moniker.

“Forgot I was wearing it” is the absolute worse. At least it was just a sample!

PSA to iPhone users: If you get an “access denied” error when commenting here, you probably need to check your “Hide IP Address” setting in Settings > Safari.

I’ve posted this before, but the setting keeps reverting and I keep having to deal with it randomly. Hopefully I save someone a bit of frustration!
