Wednesday scent of the day 1/17

Posted by Robin on 17 January 2024 178 Comments

Happy Hump Day! Birthdays: Benjamin Franklin, Anne Brontë, Betty White, Eartha Kitt. What fragrance are you wearing?

For my favorite Dolly Parton song, a version of the traditional ballad Silver Dagger, released on the 1999 folk / bluegrass album The Grass is Blue, I'd be wearing Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist if I still had any. In its place I'm wearing Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue, which isn't quite right but will have to do. (You can listen to the song here.)

Reminder: 1/19 is Dolly Parton's birthday! Do what you like with the theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows Dolly Parton's Kingston banjo, 1964-1974, via the Tennesee State Museum.

    I’m wearing L’Eau d’Armoise, for the artemisia.

Dolly Parton is obviously an exemplary person but I’m not a fan of country music so I didnt have anything in mind for the theme, but since I wore Vanille Banane on Monday and Demeter Gingerale yesterday, I thought, well, those are both fun, and so is Dolly — she always seems like she’s living the good life — so I might as well just wear the most-fun things I own this week. Today I’m in vintage Eau de Courrèges, a bright, sparkling citrus with a woody chypre base, much more durable than your average cologne. It’ll brighten up any day.

I’m not a country music fan either, but Dolly does appear to be a fun person so probably about any scent would work.

Great take on the CP. I’m also a fan of Dolly but not so much country music. What I absolutely love about her is her ability to answer the most stupid question or observation made by interviewers while still maintaining her smile, equilibrium, and humor. She’s an absolute American Treasure!

    Hello.
Sotd is Lush’s new limited New Romantics. It smells like a Lush store with more fruitiness and something spicy (Lush says it’s pimento berry oil). I like it. It’s fun and not serious at all.

Eau de Frustration again today! This is becoming a bad habit in 2024.

Forgot to say happy birthday to Sade yesterday! Have loved her for years and years! No one can touch her smoothness, her style, or her dignity!

Currently in Big Brand Tire Service trying to take care of another dually with a nail in it. This is tire number two. This is just one reason I bought a dually because otherwise I’d be stranded in the desert waiting for a very essspensive flat bed.

SOTD as of now is Tire Rubber…🙄

      Oh no! Frustrating indeed.

Having duallies is smart, but what about front wheels? It is dual rear wheels only, right? If a front wheel is punctured, would you need a flat bed or would you still be able to drive to the service station?

If it was a front wheel, yes, I’d be incapacitated. Luckily it’s been the back tires both times. And it was not a nail because that would have been an easy fix. Nope, the side wall is blown so new tire is needed. Could have been worse though…😬 Post shower chose SL Un Bois Vanille.

I’m in Abel Nurture. 18 sprays, and even at that it is quite faded by now. Glad my bottle was cheap.
I had strange and vivid dreams last night. In one of them I was swimming in a pool shaped like the state of Texas. Lol. Guess Sunday’s packers game is still on my brain.
We are suffering through the arctic blast, but this morning at least it was a balmy zero when I went out to start my car instead of the minus 10 it’s been the two previous mornings.🥶

I’m so sorry to hear you’re in pain still. Toothache is miserable. I have read good reviews of the Sunspel perfume on that list…maybe Salli Hughes in the Guardian. I have owned the Malin Goetz Dark Rum but gave it away because it was so single note and smelled like artificial rum essence ( like the rum in rum and raisin icecream) and it annoyed me. Re. Your Zadig and Voltaire chestnut post…Inused to have the original This is Her which had chestnut, and it smelled like that sweet chestnut paste , crème des marrons, like vanilla chestnut. Sweet but not sugary. If you liked Ariane Grande Cloud you might like it.
      Hope your day gets better

I had to go back and read yesterday’s comments, too. What a nightmare! I’m so sorry! I’m just like you with the dentist. Took me until I was in my 40’s for a dentist to discover I had an unusual nerve pathway and I probably wasn’t ever getting completely numb. I hope they get you completely fixed on your next visit. Sometimes ya gotta wonder if dentures wouldn’t be better…any dentists out there are horrified by that statement, I’m sure!

I went back and read your comment from yesterday. I’m so sorry about your dental nightmare, but glad that you have an understanding and patient dentist. Dental pain is the worst. I can sympathize, as I have been through my share of dental woes, and I also seem to be resistant to dental anesthetics, as I always require a larger than normal amount, and have to have supplementary doses for prolonged procedures (i.e. anything over ~2 hours). Fortunately, I have a dentist who is aware of all this and ensures that I am given enough anesthetic to do the job, and unhesitatingly gives me more if it starts to wear off.

I had one dentist once who was an absolute jerk who insisted that the drilling “couldn’t hurt” as much as it did when I was not numbed properly (he had given me one shot of anesthetic, then disappeared to work on other patients, and when he finally got around to me an hour and a half later, it had worn off). Um, actually, it DOES hurt that much, therefore it CAN hurt that much!

Last night I discovered that the pipes in the garage were frozen, so I opened the taps and tried to thaw them with my hair dryer. I couldn’t reach some spots and gave up and went to bed. I was immensely relieved to hear the water running in the utility sink this morning and to hear the furnace pump working, so the pipes are warming. I hope I won’t discover any breaks, but so far, so good. I am wearing PDM Oajan for spicy goodness this morning. Dolly has a spicy side to her!

It’s the coldest stretch of weather in Portland recorded weather history, so not likely to happen next year, but I think I’ll look into ways to keep them from freezing anyway. And I will insulate the furnace tube in the attic.

Back in the ‘80s my flatmate had the album Trio with Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Linda Rondstadt . He had hundreds of country music albums ( some were BUA – back up albums, unplayed ) but had a real soft spot for Emmylou Harris and his gaze would mist over whenever he listened to her or Gram Parsons ( she sang backing vocals). I had never really listened to country music before so it opened a new door for me, which I have fond memories of. I think Parton’s Biggest hit here, radio-wise was Here You Come Again…and I’ve been trying to match it with a perfume that’s not great but you keep coming back to it, as it has a hold on you. Something a bit flashy, a bit of a swagger and a wandering eye. The best match from my collection is Coco Mademoiselle. We don’t really suit each other but I find myself coming back for more.

Wow. The leaves of kanuka are quite peppery when crushed, whereas Manuka has a stronger “ tea tree” scent. I prefer the dustiness of the manuka smell, like faded black pepper with some leafiness. What was the perfume?

For those of you who have been on my vanilla journey with me, I have decided to quit with it. I purchased Akro Bake as I think it will pair well with my BBW Vanilla Bean Noel Body Cream that I enjoy so much. First bottle purchase this year, but it is only 1/17/24. Hopefully, I am not starting down the purchasing path every month or week again🤣 I told myself I was going to be good this year. Right.

Love Iris Poudre. You smell wonderful. Curious about Akro Bake as Persolaise likes it, too. I’ll be sampling one of these days. Sounds like a good one to pair with your Vanilla Bean Noel.

It smells like lemon pound cake or lemon cupcakes. It does have vanilla and whipped cream like my Noel, but the lemon is quite prominent.

Congrats on the purchase. I caved on the Glasshouse dragon candle and will be counting it as a “perfume” purchase … but I reserve the right to change my mind since I bought it for the dragon and not the perfume notes 😇

I bought it for the dragons as well. The notes do sound nice, but without the dragon, I could have resisted. I was born in a dragon year, so I have an affinity for anything dragon-themed.

I don’t think it’s very Dolly, but I’m wearing Ummagumma today. Or maybe Dolly too would like to curl up with a cup of tea while wearing Ummagumma to watch the snow accumulate to the tune of 20-30 cm (that’s basically 12″, which, yep, we have that at least on the hedge I’m looking at now). Everything’s cancelled: School, university, extracurriculars, my half-day planning meeting. Kind of fun, but I hope it’s over by tomorrow.

L’Artisan Tea for Two, which I don’t think really fits with the cp, but is wonderful on a cold rainy day.

We had errands in downtown Seattle this morning so made a stop by my favorite bakery near Pike Place Market (Le Panier, highly recommended) and had my favorite almond croissant (they call it amandine) –they make the best! It was still warm from the oven. I want a fragrance like that – sweet, but not cloying, almondy, with a pastry note, but not that awful synthetic butter note. Is there one?

MR. G and I have been sheltering at my folks’ retirement center apartment for the past five days, waiting for power to come back to our house. It came back on yesterday and it’s finally above freezing today and, barring a fresh power outage (which could happen because of freezing rain), we might get to go home today. We are looking into having a generator installed.

Meanwhile, my SOTD for these past five days has been Omnia Ambra because it’s all I brought. It has been comforting.

Hello, I am writing in yesterday’s post because I feel a deep need of “venting” before I go to work this morning. So much to say and where do I start?
Amouage… In a swap a year or two ago I received a bag of many and various things as en extra. Perfume things. Too generous. Lately I have been debating which perfume I should put on before I’m off to walk my 4 year old to daycare and myself go to work as a landscaper. The dirty work I do does not stop me from enjoying even the most sophisticated frags wafting from me while I work. I don’t ever wear perfume to “smell” nice to other people. I do this so I can enjoy it myself.
One of the afternoons the weekend prior to last, while home and after shower I decided I am tired of everything I have in my collection in a way. Too modern, too fleeting, where is the depth and that’s coming from even the best of the niche companies I have on my shelf. I remembered I had that bag of samples. I knew what I was looking for. Amouage. Sprayed Amouage Jubilation 25 (woman, woman’s has regular numericals, the roman ones are for men). I smelled a hit of aldehydic mossness. Old fashioned in a way. For a true fragrance enthusiast at first spray. It hung on for the longest time wafting very subtle yet potent delicious everythingness. I was hooked immediately. But the “worst” was yet to come. I knew I was perfume-reborn again. I said the “worst” was about to come because of what about my wallet!!
I had run through the first sample and ordered another on which came soon after. Both the sample from the stash bag from the swap and the new one that came in was super low fill. To say I have been enjoying Jubilation 25 is to say nothing. Lasting power? Unrealistic. Unbeatable. When people say “real good perfume stays on for days” yet the only thing they had to do with the world of fragrances, was to use Dior Midnight Poison decades ago, and now own some dusty ol’ Estee Lauder Pleasures they almost never reach for. So where is this “real good” perfume? Jubilation 25!!!!!!! I ran out of my last sample Monday. Smelled the remnants of it all day yesterday when I through on the same sweatshirt I used precious weekend while I still sprayed the sample. Today? I am still smelling it. Even wafting from my hair after like 2 or 3 showers!! It is slowly starting to fade leaving me… Jittery!! I already ordered 5 more samples of it and cannot wait until they arrive. My goodness. Beautiful. My hands are shaking. Like a drug addict. I just cannot wait to open the package with my samples so I can re-apply. This is what I had been looking for all my life. .. when I get paid on Friday I am so ordering a travel set of it. No I don’t need to reapply during the day at all – I can smell it for the next couple of days. But spraying a fresh new spray of it gives me such a “high”!!! Guys I’m more than hooked…

I enjoyed your “vent”! And I love the juxtaposition of the stereotype of your job vs the stereotype of someone who wears perfume. I, too, wear it only for myself. I don’t need or want compliments (though, I try not to offend—I won’t wear Hyde out of the house).

How wonderful that you’ve taken in love again with this sensory experience. I have a sample of Jubilation somewhere. One inspired me to hunt it down!
