Tuesday scent of the day 1/16

Posted by Robin on 16 January 2024 177 Comments

It's Tuesday. Also, National Religious Freedom Day, or, if you prefer, National Nothing Day. Birthdays: Susan Sontag, Sade, Kate Moss. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in L'Artisan Parfumeur La Chasse aux Papillons, because Dolly Parton loves butterflies (and because carole and TeaInTheGarden mentioned it in yesterday's poll).

Reminder: 1/19 is Dolly Parton's birthday! Do what you like with the theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows the Jay Strongwater Mae Butterfly Teapot ("A dramatic 18K gold finished butterfly is perfectly perched on the lid of the Mae porcelain teapot") is $795 at Biggs Ltd. Extra reading: The Real Reason Dolly Parton Loves Butterflies at CheatSheet.

Robin you smell great-and I bought the body was at fragrance net 🙂

I’m in Le Lion, for a day of paperwork for energy programs. I have a tin of Quality Street at the ready, and the little size of Aveda hand cream-nice to have the customers leave with a treat. I love the fact that we get to chat for a bit, as we wait for applications to process. You can learn so much from people.

Hope everyone has one considerate thing happen to them today-a compliment, or a sincere smile, or someone holding a door. Or best of all-a perfume compliment!

Thinking of what to wear, I’ll probably grab Cafe Rosé, because it’s an easy grab.

Sounding incredibly silly, does anyone have a doggo treadmill at their home?

Safe travels and hot chocolate for those of us lucky enough to stay in.

Café Rose is one of my favorites!

I don’t have a treadmill for my dog, but I have seen videos of a Dalmatian running on one at a fire station. I think it’s a great idea. It would involve a fair amount of training, though.

I go to a place with my guy, once a week, so he’s trained. This weather is a reminder he needs more.

And I do love that Cafe Rosé!

I’ve worn Demeters for the last two Tuesdays, not planned, it just happened, and so I figure that’s a thing now, at least for the month of January. I’m in Demeter Gingerale, which is the most delightful thing imaginable because not only does it smell like ginger ale, it actually smells carbonated. No idea how it’s done — some sort of aldehyde, maybe — but I wish they or someone would do an entire line of carbonated scents: I’d gladly wear cola, root beer, cream soda, lemon-lime, anything, and I bet a whole lot of other people would, too.

A rose and vanilla bean body oil sounds perfect for beating the winter blahs. Especially in February. That seems to be when I find myself grabbing the Rose Jam shower gel from LUSH.

    Hello.
Sotd is Gabrielle Essence. The scent is nice but the bottle is really nice. Would make a nice vanity display piece but it’s perfume, so we all know where that really goes. Ha.
Testing another Lush product today. Super Milk conditioning spray. Adds a light dose of moisture to the hair and smells delicious. Something yummy and a little spicy (like clovey/ cinnamonny).

Wearing CSP Vanille Café. It’s a perfect double whammy because you’ve got the nice soothing vanilla and also a bit of energy from the coffee. That’s what I tell myself anyway.

Got up into the 70’s on desert floor yesterday. Another gorgeous one today. Every sunset is a beautiful rainbow of colors all gently easing into each other like a vibrant watercolor. Blink and everything subtly changes, colors shift, grey goes black and the moon becomes sharper and more distinct. I have about 70 million photos! 😂

Sampling Gucci Gorgeous Jasmine today. It was pretty pungent in the opening but has mellowed to a sweet, milky jasmine w/ citrus that’s still a bit sharp/kind of bitter to my nose. I think my Mom would have liked this perfume. She liked white florals and jasmine.

January is usually the toughest month for work motivation for me. My company had some layoffs and reorgs last week and I believe I have hit a new motivation low today. ☺️

But a perfume package w/ some cheapies from Zara will be delivered this afternoon and make for a lovely distraction. 🍨

Thank you, Jalapeno! Everything was intact which was a nice surprise. I ordered perfumes from Zara once before and they shipped them free floating in a large box w/ no packing material. This time was the same but they were wrapped in some tissue paper at least…but once again free floating in a large box. I guess they are used to shipping clothes only. 😆

I need a boost with some mimosa fragrance and citrus today after working a three day weekend and driving home in the snow and slippery roads last night.
For mimosa I’m wearing my sample of L’Artisan Parfumeur Soleil de Provence which they describe as, “A winter walk in Provence”, which is what I wish I was doing instead. For citrus I’ve been enjoying eating Sumo mandarins which are only available in the winter and they are expensive but worth it for the deliciousness.

I put on Aftelier saffron-chocolate body oil after my shower this morning, so opted to layer appropriately with Safran Troublant. It’s quite cold and rainy today, a good day to be cozy. And I’ve officially reached the point in the winter when I’ve had it with pants and sweaters, so today am defiantly wearing a Sézane dress layered over wool leggings and under a cuddly cardigan, plus thick alpaca socks.

I don’t know Medima — I was planning to get some wool tights while in Ireland this fall, so I will look for that brand. Garnet Hill (US mail order company) used to have Italian microfiber tights that I LOVED; they were not terribly warm but I loved the texture. I still have a couple of pairs (in my notorious sock drawer) but they are wearing out. And no longer available from GH.

Because I think she might wear it, I’m in SMN Tobacco (Tabbaco?) for the Dolly Parton CP. This is a gorgeous, full-bodies floral on me. I get more tobacco blossom than leaf here, with lots of amber, maybe vanilla, and I don’t know what else. An MUAer swapped it with me years ago, and it still smells like the day I got it.
I’ve never sniffed Tobacco Toscana, but it’s either been reformulated, or it’s a different scent. If Fragrantica is any guide, I get no leather, no birch tar, and to me it doesn’t smell the least bit masculine. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Plus, it’s got incredible sillage and lasting power. Can’t find any info on it anywhere. Maybe someone here knows?

In Borneo 1834 today, which — to my astonishment — has all but disappeared on me after a good spray on each arm (nearly five hours ago). It’s there when I sniff my wrists, but only just. Perhaps because of today’s bitter cold.

What I am smelling instead is my conditioner, Lush Violet Cream (or is Violet Dream?) — the purple one. I adore violet but it is disconcerting to have a hair product (especially one that I rinsed out in under a minute so it wouldn’t turn my silver locks purple) dominate a Lutens! Still, I guess that if, as I wrote yesterday, my interpretation of the CP is to find something that makes me feel like a force of nature, this roaring violet is a good choice.

Heh, maybe we’re twins in this regard. Whenever (rarely) I wear Borneo 1834, it just didn’t have the wham/punch I had been looking for and I attributed it to my bottle being old.

My bottle is maybe ten years old, but I have stored it carefully (in the original box, inside my wooden perfume box, and away from exterior walls in our climate controlled house). I guess I should not be surprised that TIME is a key factor here. I do think the increasing cold plays a role, too — I wore this same fragrance over the weekend and it came through much more assertively.

I bought the small size and am not sure I will repurchase, because it’s not a fabulous conditioner. That may just be what you get with purple toning conditioners across the board — I’d been using Aveda’s purple-toning shampoo and conditioner and found them drying. The Lush does smell really good (if you like violet). It’s not overpowering, but I can still — almost 24 hours later — smell it.

I do wish Lush would bring back Don’t Rain on My Parade (shower gel). I love that version of Violet and it remains my favorite Lush product of all time.

I forgot to add something to my post. As most of you know I have been looking for a vanilla fragrance, but haven’t found exactly what I am looking for yet. I love BBW Vanilla Bean Noel body lotion and would like something to layer with it. Someone told me Cloud was good with it. Is Cloud more of a young person’s perfume? I don’t think I have seen much about it on here. TIA.

I assume you’re talking about 4160 Tuesdays Clouds. If yes, it is not a young person’s perfume and I would consider it more of an iris perfume than a vanilla although there’s vanilla.

I do think of Ariana Grande’s fragrances as generally directed at younger folks. I think a couple of people here on the board have mentioned liking it. I have a travel size spray. I think it might work well for layering. It is a musky sweet pear IMO. I wear it at night once in a while or as a base for other fragrances, but I don’t love it.

An ice storm is supposed to arrive this afternoon and tonight, oh yay. I’m wearing MKK because it makes me feel warm.
Also, I’m battling furnace woes today. Five days of sub-freezing temperatures have frozen the furnace condensate tube running through the attic. In order to keep the furnace running I have to empty the condensate collection container every hour or so and the only implement that will fit inside is a 12ml syringe. We are supposed to have a warm front come through this afternoon so I am hoping the tube thaws before bedtime tonight. I am tired of winter already and it had been mild until this weekend.

I stayed commando this morning because I had a dentist appointment at noon. I was there for three hours! It’s a long story. I’m getting two new crowns on upper right back molars. But I have a pesky array of problems: I’m unusually resistant to Novocaine, I have a tiny mouth, I have a very strong gag reflex, and I have very bad TMJ. I also had a very old drown on the upper back molar and they had porcelain over metal which makes them very tough to drill away to prepare for a new crown. My dentist is an absolute angel who has brought me through after my decades of abject anxiety over anyone touching my teeth, but after 90 minutes, my bad jaw locked up and we had to call it quits for the day, except for small touch-up repairs. I feel like a terrible patient but she is always so patient and reassuring. For now my right cheek is blown up big and it aches to eat (soft foods only) I will be going back on Monday to get things finished up and next time I’ll have a nice dose of Xanax, not simply to relax me but to make my jaw cooperate more. Seriously, this afternoon I thought my jaw would be locked out of whack for eternity and was in a huge panic.

Maybe later on I’ll find a calming and Zen type of scent to put on. Supposedly a few eBay items will come in the mail today, including my extravagant Christmas gift to myself of Amouage Lineage–but we’ll see!

When I was a kid, we had a horrible dentist. I remember getting a filling with no freezing put in, apparently it was “small” enough. Seriously? My current dentist is fantastic, thankfully so I totally understand the journey.

Posting late today. I finally did my first load of laundry in Colorado. It’s nice having a washer & dryer in the apartment, and worth the extra $$$ not having to schlep loads to a Laundromat.

Big news here is that it got up to around freezing today!! 28 degrees F felt wonderful after the Big Freeze. Hopefully there won’t be more Arctic Blasts like that this winter.

Goutal’s Heure Exquise EdP in the new bottle packaging for me today. It smells very much like the dregs of my original 1980s bottle that I hoard, though the longevity is not as good, and I doubt it still contains Mysore sandalwood. But all in all, a fairly successful reformulation. I have to be in the mood for its powdery goodness, but when I am, it hits the spot. I’m actually surprised this one is still around, as its starchy aldehydic galbanum, powdery iris & rose formalism seems out of step with today’s tastes.
