Monday scent of the day 1/8

Posted by Robin on 8 January 2024 133 Comments

Alas, it is Monday, and a Monday in January to boot. Also, David Bowie’s (may he RIP) birthday (and Paris will inaugurate Rue David Bowie today). What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m wearing Thierry Mugler Cologne, one of my picks from the week we did a David Bowie community project in 2021.

Reminder: 1/12 is National Marzipan Day. Wear a fragrance with honey, almond or both.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is from the 2022 Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream.

Wearing Dior Hypnotic Poison for the CP.

Finally, it is a beautiful sunny day despite the cold. More heavy rain to come between tomorrow and Wednesday. I’m so tired of it. Counting already the days for spring!
    Happy Monday! ☕️

      Hooray for sun!🌞
I literally cannot remember the last time I saw it. We are in a permanent state of gray it seems.

It seems that where I live, the sun disappeared at the stroke of midnight NYE. NYE day was sunny and beautiful, but starting on January 1, it has been gloomy and overcast. The actual temperatures are fine with me; I LIKE cool, even chilly, weather, as we get way too much heat the rest of the year, and summer always outstays its welcome, but it would be nice to see little sun.

Went to Lush and holiday items were on sale. Picked up a lotion, a few shower gels, dusting powders and lip balms. Used Flower Gel shower gel today. It’s a spicy jasmine, ylang ylang scent. Very nice.

    Good Morning-
Sipping the Thé au Tibet by MF, the tea notes are black China tea scented with vanilla, jasmine, mandarin orange, rose, and bergamot.

&… eating little ginger cookies my sister in law brought from Holland while they were visiting us over Christmas and New Years…

I haven’t picked a SOTD but I smell like Almond shower oil and body oil from L’Occitane en Provence.

It was so windy and cold yesterday I didn’t get out of my pajamas. Didn’t even put it my contacts. Very lazy day. So much dust and sand was airborne it almost obscured the mountains across the valley. The sun is out in all her glory this morning and there are some gusty breezes but so much better than yesterday.

I think I do have a couple of perfumes with honey but I didn’t really care this morning and reached for Ummagumma because it has EVERYTHING I love ! It’s like a witches brew catered to my exact needs! 🧙‍♀️

Stay warm folks! I am actually dressed today, but have yet to put in my contacts so who knows….👀

          Deva,

There is a month on the Arabic calendar known as Shamal.
The sand blows everyday in the middle east but Shamal is SPECIAL.
It relandscapes much of what the Saudi desert looks like.
And impossible to go out, wear contacts, aye yai yai, fine grit in your ears, your teeth…yikes.
We had the wind before it came to you but today is beautiful and chilly in SoCal, so clear I can see all the way to the snow on top of Mt. Baldy.
SOTD is PdE Cuir de Russie.

Smelling fabulous over there! The wind picked up again here later this morning. I don’t know if I could do a month of this. If you look up buffeted in the dictionary, you’ll see Biggie Smalls doing a dance across the desert. But, definitely less particulate matter airborne today! While Shamal sounds interesting, I’ll be happy to never experience it. 🙃

Gathered up all my honey and almond scents, of which I have five, so that works out well for this week. Today I’m in the indefensible Lady Gaga Fame, which is barely distinguishable from at least a hundred other scents, but I got it cheap and I like it, and it does have a decided honey note in the opening salvo.

David Bowie, one of my daughters favorites, may he rip. I got her settled into her apartment this past weekend and loaded her up with groceries so she won’t starve.
I spent the rest of the weekend with my cousin and had a lovely visit. And the best part is that I am not allergic to her cat!!😺 She has been telling me that her cat was hypoallergenic and I was a nonbeliever until my visit, but I had zero symptoms. It was great. Her kitty is a Siberian. Who knew?!

I’m in Beauty Pie’s She Brought Peonies today which they describe as: An uplifting, modern floral fragrance. Luscious top notes of Plum and Red Apple blossom into a trio of superlative florals: sparkling Peony Petals, full-bodied Rose Absolute and intoxicating Fresh Jasmine – with the merest touch of spicy Patchouli Oil for depth. Like a bouquet in a bottle.
    Another very lovely fragrance.

KK Pure Honey yesterday, Viktoria Minya Eau de Hongrie today, followed by Ellis Brooklyn Bee, Solstice Scents Smokewood Apiary, Demeter Honey, Marc Jacobs Honey, and Tokyo Milk Honey and the Moon for the remaining days. I have so many honey-centric perfumes and this is the time of year to break them out.

As a fan of honey notes, I will probably go for points all this week. Today is Moresque Sandal Granada. It has the same naturalistic honey note as Zoologist Bee; a reviewer on Fragrantica made the comparison, and as I just recently gotten Bee, I confirmed that. I like SG, but I wish there was more woody sandalwood. What’s there is more like incense and rose and sandalwood. Samsara is still my sandalwood queen.

To my surprise, there are more scents with a honey note in my collection than almond. And I thought I didn’t like honey in perfume. Huh. Anyway, I’m spending the morning in Under My Skin from the bottle that arrived over the weekend. A note for MissGoldsmith — this bottle’s sprayer sprays a VERY light, fine mist. I became used to dabbing from sample vials, which usually works well for me with extraits, so I’m going to have to experiment with this sprayer a bit. It would work well for those who prefer a very light application of extrait-strength perfumes.

Cannot think of anything I own that would count for the CP, and no time right now to look at the databases of notes. I am in Philosophy Amazing Grace, so I smell…nice. I found this bottle, about 1/3 full, lurking in the sock drawer I successfully* sorted yesterday. Forgot it was there.

*my socks were distributed across 3.5 different drawers, two of which were overstuffed to the point of not closing easily. They are now in three drawers, but all close, all socks are neatly folded, and it all makes sense: sport socks with my workout gear; hand knit socks and hiking socks in their own small drawer; and everyday socks in the main sock drawer, along with a small collection of “bed socks” that are by the pjs. In addition to Amazing Grace, I found Mr. Skal’s missing hiking sock (we have one set of matching pairs — except for the size!). I got rid of my first-ever pair of socks knitted from my own handspun yarn — they have always been known as the “ugly socks,” but I wore them; they have been darned multiple times and are now so felted that I cannot get them over my instep. Another felted pair will have the leg cut off to become wrist warmers. Also wondering why I still have six or eight pairs of stockings (nylons), given that I never wear them; those, along with most of my tights, have been banished to a storage bin. (I still have the nylons because maybe some day I will need them, and there is no place near me for an emergency purchase — I think our local grocery and drugstores no longer carry them.)

It’s snowing here this morning, giant wet flakes that in the last minute have changed to coming straight down, so it’ll be cold rain soon. Kind of pretty to look at for now, but not so great when I have to go out into the rain later today. It’s a good day to stay in and get on the bike trainer, I guess.

In things that make my day less dreary, here’s the top Canadian headline in my feed: “Try Not to Let Moose Lick Your Car, Parks Canada Warns”, https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/dont-let-moose-lick-1.7074587?cmp=rss. I’ll try to avoid it! 🙂

Not sure about my SOTD; I don’t have a ton of honey or almond. I’ll probably grab something from the recent group of samples on the counter once I finally get going.

I have a couple of honey scents, but no almond it seems!

Apparently I have more honey and almond scents than I realized, at least going by the notes lists in Fragrantica. Of course, I don’t know how accurate those note lists are. The first thing that came to my mind when I saw the CP for the week was Fum Ariose, which to my nose at least, is definitely an almond scent. Interestingly, the notes list in Fragrantica makes no mention of almond. In any case, I am wearing a few dabs of Jovan Mink and Pearls, which lists bitter almond among the notes. I have no idea whether it is actually there, but it gives me an excuse to give one of my more neglected perfumes a good wearing, as well as reflecting once again on just how good so many of those “drugstore” perfumes were back in the day.

Ariose is one of the first perfumes I thought of too. And on their website the start to the description is “A surface of hydro-distilled almond shimmers over warm textured notes of honeyed Amber…” So Fragrantica just doesn’t know what’s up. 😉 I plan to wear it this week for sure.

I have a couple of obvious honey perfumes, like Miel de Bois and APLS, but they’re not things I’d wear to work and I’ll save those for evenings. Instead, I’ll focus on flowers, the earlier stage of honey, and today I’m wearing Guerlain’s Chant d’Arômes.

I have a true horror of marzipan–seriously, the mere thought of it makes me slightly sick to my stomach; the only time honey and almonds go together in my book is in baklava or something similar! And I also don’t care for either honey or almonds as scents or perfume notes. So I guess I”ll go my own way this week, beginning today with my often used Indigo Smoke.

After a week of beautiful weather with bright blue skies we’re also getting gray and rainy today and off and on blustery, with a cold front coming through and possibly even some tornadoes tonight! I wish the best to the football goers (and players) tonight. They’re warning tailgaters not to take tents because they’ll blow away!

I love marzipan. My grandparents always brought some along when they came to visit us for Christmas, and there was never enough of it to satisfy me. It would be rationed out one piece per person for however many days it lasted. Now that I’m grown, of course, I know how expensive marzipan is. I don’t think I’ve ever had marzipan made with honey though; the stuff I’ve had was made with ordinary sugar.

50_Roses I love marzipan too. If you have a food processor you can make your own marzipan which is what I do, just ate some today slathered over the last of the stollen (which I did not make). You only need unsalted almonds, a bit of vanilla extract, some oil (I use peanut), and powdered sugar. Grind in food processor for about 5 minutes until the nuts break down and release their oil and everything gets creamy. Makes a terrific racket and you may have to open it and scrape the stuff off the sides and be patient as it takes awhile. I don’t really follow a recipe, just do it to taste, as I find a lot of the commercial marzipan too sweet and containing too much oil. But you can certainly find recipes out there.
For the CP, I got a fantastic bottle of DSH Marzipan in a swap awhile back (very boozy realistic bitter almond notes) but gave it to my sister because she loved it so much. I may have to steal it back for a few days. But I’m already ahead of the game cuz I’ve been wearing Dior Cologne Blanche from a decant received in the Swapmeet that I’ve almost thunked, and that has a lovely heliotrope and almond note.

I have made marzipan in the past, but I don’t recall using oil, just almonds, sugar, and a bit of almond extract. The plain kind is not too expensive. What my grandparents would bring was the kind that are shaped and colored like fruit (peaches, lemons, oranges, etc.). I know that a large part of the cost of those is all the labor of hand painting them. i have bought the plain, uncolored type before to use a filling in stollen, which I do make myself from scratch. This is the first year in many years that I did not make any. I am supposed to cut down on sugar, so that means no stollen. 😢

So sorry you cannot eat stollen, 50_Roses, especially your own wonderful homemade one. It is one of my fave holiday goodies and I am always on the lookout for a good one. Also, kudos to you for making it all these years. Not sure why but anything that requires rising and kneading and yeast scares me because it seems like a lot of work. I need to get over that and just try it since I do love my yeasty sweet breads.

I made stollen for Christmas every year for nearly 40 years. I missed one year about 15 years ago when my oven was acting up and I wasn’t willing to risk ruining it after all the expense and work of making it (I ended up getting a new oven). I truly did look forward to eating it for breakfast for a few days during Christmas. I never have been much for making yeast breads, but stollen is the exception. It does not actually call for kneading, at least not the recipe I use. It is a very soft dough, so it would not really be possible to knead it in the usual way. Instead, it is beaten with an electric mixer for 10 minutes. The recipe I use if from a 1970’s era Betty Crocker cookbook.

If you click on my gravatar, you can find a pic of some stollen I made a few years ago and of which I was particularly proud. I don’t normally decorate them, but did that year. I thought they came out really well.

That’s quite a reaction to marzipan…it is so sweet , though, and with such an overpowering scent. I feel that way about butter popcorn with that sickly fried butter sugary smell.

Joining Calypso in Indigo Smoke today. I have only a couple of honey or almond scents in my collection, so today I’m honoring David Bowie with an androgynous frag.

After all the brouhaha touting the huge storm in last week’s weather forecast, we ended up getting 3″. 🙄 Today it’s a bright, sunshiny day!

The weather turned colder, 3C and as I’ve just recovered from a cold I stayed inside today. I spent the day in vintage Rive Gauche EDP, I slightly like my vintage EDT better as it is icier but the warmer EDP appealed today as it’s already cold enough outside. By chance tonight I’m wearing Guerlain l’Instant Magic which is an almond fest and even more powdery than I remembered.

I am within thunking distance and will try to do so this year! 🥰

    https://www.instagram.com/p/C12pHGLx4QM/?igsh=MXF0b3R0YTlvaWJjbg==

As to honey and/or almond notes, I have many that qualify. First world problems although it is helping me in my quest for a low buy / no buy year. So far, I am 1/52 (the numerator counts as having fulfilled the mission); still a long way to go but you have to start somewhere, right? Right!

In other random news / question:

Did you know that you can actually arrange to have your baby born at Disneyworld? Who knew? I don’t know how much maternity services cost normally but the reel mentioned $5,000 which is supposedly double the usual amount. You can also arrange to have iconic photographs taken! Oh, and you have to have a ticket to get into the regular park 🤣🤣🤣 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️.

Takin’ it one week at a time with the no-buy! Is thunking also a NY resolution? It’s one of mine, and your AP (near)thunk reminds me of my hardest one, for Havane Vanille. It was good until the last, oily drop, but it is now gone forever. Now on the less-heartbreaking emptying of Bodyshop rose oil, which is not sour as a lot of roses can be on my skin.

(P.S. No Comment on Disney Birthin’)

    Greetings NST!

Popping in briefly for an update. Teflon kitty and I made it safely to Colorado on January 2. The movers showed up on January 6. I was lucky with the weather and didn’t have to worry about rain or snow, except on December 28, which was Moving Day. That was a yucky drizzly day all day.

I *think* all my perfumes survived the move intact.

Been running around trying to get things done. Will post more later.

    SOTD = Boyfriend Body Creme.
