Friday scent of the day 1/5

Posted by Robin on 5 January 2024 180 Comments

It's the first Friday of 2024. (It’s also Twelfth Night, National Bird Day, George Washington Carver Day and Alvin Ailey’s birthday.) Our community project for today: wear a fragrance to match Peach Fuzz, Pantone's color of the year for 2024. "PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz is a velvety gentle peach whose all-embracing spirit enriches heart, mind, and body. Subtly sensual, PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz is a heartfelt peach hue bringing a feeling of kindness and tenderness, communicating a message of caring and sharing, community and collaboration. A warm and cozy shade highlighting our desire for togetherness with others or for enjoying a moment of stillness and the feeling of sanctuary this creates, PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz presents a fresh approach to a new softness. An appealing peach hue softly nestled between pink and orange, PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz inspires belonging, recalibration, and an opportunity for nurturing, conjuring up an air of calm, offering us a space to be, feel, and heal and to flourish from."

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I’m ending the week the way I started, in Hermès Eau de Néroli Doré. It works perfectly with the scarf shown above, and is indeed a fresh approach to a new softness. To me, it also succeeds in "bringing a feeling of kindness and tenderness".

Reminder: 1/12 is National Marzipan Day. Wear a fragrance with honey, almond or both.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Isola di Primavera silk scarf in apricot (shown above doubled) is $510 for a 34 inch square at Hermès.

I am taking the CP literally, and you can’t get much peachier than Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Peach (although I don’t know why they didn’t call it Vanille Pêche to match Vanille Abricot, very strange). It’s spicier and more angular than VA, and *very* peachy, eventually melting into that gorgeous CSP vanilla. It’s the smell of sunshine and happiness.

I bet someone at the perfume house objected to a potential reference to fishing, and insisted on the English spelling. I haven’t come across a lot of this kind of confusion in the French language, but this one is a biggie. 🍑 vs 🐠, both even with the same accent mark. Wow.

I think you must certainly be right about that. What I found strange was that the same year, 2005, they released Vanille Pineapple (instead of Ananas), and in the next two years Vanille Citrus (instead of Agrumes) and Caramel Sunset. And then they went right back to French-only names! (Until 2017’s Vanille Blackberry, anyway.) There must have been some sort of mid-2000s hiccup in whatever department it is that comes up with names.

Here’s a funny video about perfume reviews.

I’m off today and am trying to de-clutter some clutter. I started last night in the dining room. I have an small old hutch that is filled with random things. One of the drawers is stuck closed but I can see that there is at least 2 phone books in there. Lol!
I am wearing Allure edp for the cp today.

I actually love peach-the fruit, the colour, all of it, but I forgot about the CP so I’m in Eau d’Hadrien. Beautiful on a crisp winter day. We must be due for some snow-I’ve fractured my left ankle a couple of times, and it acts up before any winter weather lol. Better than a barometer.

Robin, I love the way your describe ND. it’s a beautiful scent. The matching body wash is also awesome-fragranced enough to use on its own as a scent.

Going for peach in Gucci Rush, one to add to lillyjo’s book “why don’t I wear this more often”. It’s so good on a hot sultry summer evening but it smells good in the cold, too. The deeper notes come out.

We’re in the space where a hundred mile swing in either direction will determine whether we get snow, rain or ice. Hoping for snow, we’ve hardly had any so far, but the temps are above freezing.
I’m sure you are in for snow unless it does shift east which would be fine!

Now that galbanumgal has inspired me to see if I can get any peach from Fracas, I will probably start the day with that — and will shift back to HdP 1804 later on, post-shower. Going out to dinner with friends, and Fracas is just too much, for me, to wear to a restaurant.

And I don’t have COVID — when I posted W I’d spent a couple of hours in a very warm room; as soon as I went to a cooler part of the house, I felt better. And am negative.

My Hermes shopping fantasy was fulfilled this year! I was in a fancy-pants consignment store and saw an equine-themed scarf with a Holt Renfrew label. I looked closely and noticed that in addition there was “Hermes” was on the scarf itself. The fp store, however, had not noticed, so I bought a 1974 Hermes scarf for $50.

I am not getting any peach today, myself. The thing about Fracas is that it is the first tuberose I ever smelled, and so for me it is the benchmark for that fragrance. There may well be a peachy note in it, but to my brain, it’s “tuberose.”

I am very glad to have put it on this morning; first time in a long while that I’ve worn it without it bothering me — no sneezing! I used only one light spritz.

I’m still wafting some Laura Biagiotti Venezia that I felt compelled to spritz before bed after mentioning it in a post yesterday and then realizing I’d long been neglecting its beauty, and I know it has loads of dried fruit in it so I probably qualify for CP, but later today I will eke out a few drops of some vintage Dior Dioroma from a 1/4 full purse spray I found at a flea market. I was shocked when I picked it up, expecting to read in that cursive writing that it was Miss Dior or one of the more popular ones, and then I had to read it several times to make sure my eyes weren’t deceiving me. A gorgeous buttery yellow fruity lightly spicy chypre, perfectly balanced, without the slight bite of Diorella or the leather lashings of Dioring. But those three are sisters.

I did a deep archival dive for the CP and came up with my venerable an much-neglected bottle of Keiko Mecheri Peau de Pêche *and* a ginormous and entirely forgotten bottle of Côte Bastide Pêche de Vigne. So I sprayed the KM with abandon and then for fun dabbed some of the PdV on my wrists.
SO MANY Peachy CP Points for Me!
And I just did a search to see if the PdV was still out there (it doesn’t seem to be), and turned up Robin’s NST paired review from 2005:

In prior lives I was a serial monogamist, perfume-wise, and wore Trésor and Jil Sander No. 4 for long (separate) periods. Both are very peachy on me, and now both take me to different but equally unpleasant eras of my life. So for today’s CP I went with a scent combination that feels soft, comforting, and calming — Profumum Alba over Le Dix dusting powder. It’s like a fluffy cloud of calm.

I’m trying a colour match ( rather than perfume note) with Dune, so great. How cool to have a National Bird Day I get so much joy watching the birds in my garden, especially seeing all the fledglings that have “ made it” and listening to the beautiful songs. Off to the park now. I watch the 5K park run while pottering around by the roses. Some people are fast! Have a happy weekend. Love the scarf.

Wearing GB Sunset Hour from a travel spray for the CP. I like this one more and more, it is fruity but more sparkly than sweet. It does give me vibes of a relaxed time at the end of the day.

Continuing on my declutter of our study. I am going to fortify myself to go through the cardboard boxes of stuff my husband got from his parents after they died. Clearly I cannot entirely purge these personal items but nor do I want cardboard boxes piled in my study for additional years. Plus we have to ask ourselves if future generations are really going to want all this, especially when they may already get OUR leftover stuff. Really difficult decisions. I need my husband to help and he is NOT good at this sort of thing.

I purge my possessions and mementos periodically so my kids won’t have a colossal mound of stuff, wary after experiencing the influx of items after my in-laws deaths.

Nice day after rain and cold and I need to make time for a walk.

Husband has come up with a way that works for us re: decluttering. He takes a photo and uploads it to our shared family google drive, so we’ll always be able to see it and remember, without needing the actual object. Then we give away, throw away, whatever is appropriate. This has worked well with a lot of the kids’ art projects, though we have sorted carefully through those as our younger son is an animator and we wanted to keep a lot of his early drawings, but not the one jillion car drawings from when he was 5. He has told us to throw it all away but we can’t.

Fragrance and color have always been interlinked to me…colors bring to mind fragrances and fragrances bring to mind colors and images. The color ’Peach Fuzz’ makes me think of Guerlain Mitsouko. But since I don’t have a bottle of that right now I went with Jo Malone Poppy & Barley which for me evokes an image peach colored poppies swaying in a golden barley field and “for nurturing, conjuring up an air of calm”.

I’m in the one fragrance I own that has identifiable peach (to me, I am not a great note identifier), TF Bitter Peach. I’m on day five of my New Year’s Resolution, Invisible Dog. I tend to stay inside when the weather is cold or rainy, but when I had a dog he had to go for a walk at least 2x daily. He died three years ago, but I decided that I have an Invisible Dog that needs walks. So twice daily I go for a walk no matter the weather. It seems to be working well.

I’ll end up getting a few dollars back from ThredUp for cleaning out my closet, which is better than nothing. The hardest part is just letting go things that I have memories attached to, even though I definitely no longer have the lifestyle for many of these clothes LOL

I’m wearing Trésor by Lancôme, so I’m in a cloud of peaches and roses. Both the colour of the perfume and the box, and the fragrance itself fit today’s CP.
My bottle is quite old and smells like one of the first bottles I ever bought of this fragrance. I’ve worn it for years, although rarely these days. It’s comforting however and I used to love the ads with Isabella Rossellini.

In other news, it has temporarily stopped raining in Luxembourg and flood risks have all but disappeared.
In the Netherlands people are still working like mad to deal with the huge amounts of river water. So far major disasters have been avoided. It is fascinating to see all these solutions that have been found to cope with living in a major river delta.

I’m wearing Bois des Iles today (too lazy to search for accents on my Mac), because Fragrantica claims there’s peach, but I don’t really get it when I sniff. That’s kind of the story of my week of peach, except for GB Sunset Hour. Anyway, double points because I have this scent to spray thanks to a generous NSTer, so it definitely falls into the kindness and sharing description of the colour.

I chose DSH’s New Hope…Is Where We Dream for the cp. The sentiment behind this creation really does represent “a feeling of kindness and tenderness, communicating a message of caring and sharing” for me. Just reading Dawn’s description again gives me all the feels, as it was created to guide the wearer towards hope for the new future as we emerged from the pandemic.

Initially, I had difficulty with today’s cp – as a person who changes the colors I wear as well as makeup and fragrances seasonally, although I love both the peach note and peach color, I would never wear either in the middle of a Chicago winter. But once I saw many responses not to the color or note but rather to the feelings evoked in the description of Peach Fuzz – words like ‘velvety, gentle, subtly sensual, heartfelt, feelings of kindness and tenderness, caring and sharing, warm and cozy,’ I immediately thought of Barbara Bui Le Parfum as my choice for SOTD. On me it’s a soft but lingering skin scent without any peach notes but with a soft peachy skin tone color that bespeaks all those words above. And I was delighted to see therabbitsflower’s post yesterday who described everything about this fragrance so well!🙏

We’ve had a little bit more 🌞 this week but snow is coming for many of us this week. Hopefully, not much 🤞. Looking forward to a quiet weekend with a nearby jazz concert 🎶 on Sunday afternoon, another one of the many great programs to be found at one’s local libraries. Happy weekend to all!

I’m also in Mitsouko, echoing others here but with a difference: I put on some of the body cream. It is quite old, perhaps as old as 15 years (if it were a cat that would be very old), and has gone off in both color and texture, but it still smells good. In the beginning it was a pure creamy white with a lovely souffle-butter texture. I saw one for sale on eBay and was tempted! It is a more gentle, soft and cozy, creamy version of Mitsouko, and I felt it would fit the CP to a “T”. But just for fun I sprayed on two light sprays of the EDT.

At noon I went to the Art Museum here and confess my primary aim was to buy some pretty earrings in their gift shop–they have very nice things and they’re unusual and artist-made. My friend who’s a docent there had seen them and took a picture to show me and so naturally I had to race over to buy them! ha ha! I then visited the Kehinde Wiley exhibit, which is quite jaw-dropping, and also ate lunch there in the somewhat too fancy but still fun restaurant. It’s such a lot of walking though. Wow. We’re blessed to have three different, notable art museum buildings in close proximity and linked by tunnels under the streets, but you have to walk so far. I am on the brink of having to scale back a lot of activities I love to do and have taken for granted and it’s a drag.

On a positive note, we had very heavy rain overnight and it was dark and wet when I went into the museum’s underground parking garage, but by the time I left it was very bright, clean, and sparkly! Yay! I am about to finish watching Reacher Season 2 on Amazon Prime. Not as good as Season 1 was. The clever smart-ass language which seems nicely zippy in the books (I love them) is too overdone by the actors in this season. The actor playing Reacher is good, he’s more understated, and he is suitably ENORMOUS, but the rest of the cast is ruining it for me.

SOTD = 4160 Tuesdays Le Bain de McBain EDT

Very light citrus and flowers…overwhelmed by yesterday’s TF Bitter Peach! It will be re-worn whenever because I want to experience it!

    https://www.instagram.com/p/C1vJS63R253/?igsh=MXIzaXlyc2s1aXFjdg==

For AnnE, the 4160 Tuesdays Joy Box project is one where every other day participants wear a sample from the Joy Boxes which consist of 16 samples (8 in each). The specific one for a given day is recommended and I have chosen to follow the recommendation. There’s a FB group that discusses the perfumes. I have joined but have not commented. Overall, it’s the January overdrive equivalent to the NST Community Project!

I opened the last of my Christmas on Wednesday. It’s a very nice set of cold weather cap and scarf. Since I don’t need any more of these, I decided to return it today. I got a reasonable amount back. By the way, since I haven’t necessarily settled on a “budget” for my low buy / no buy resolution, I have decided to keep track of whatever refunds I get this year and add to the perfume kitty!

I will talk about the Verizon Administration Settlement tomorrow, including a link to a pdf which I think anyone can access with no pay wall.

I wanted to let you know that I did contact Hermes about obtaining Myrrhe Eglantine and Voilette Volynka in the set of four travel sprays. It is a no go. They cannot be bought separately in that size either. Very disappointed 😥I really don’t want to buy full bottles at those prices. I am kind of surprised they don’t sell them in the travel sprays. They must have a high volume of people that are willing to pay for the full bottles.

I would recommend using eBay to buy those travel sprays separately. I’m sure it’s not as economical as buying a set of 4 from Hermes, but I just checked and both events are currently listed there for sale in the 15ml size with at least a couple buying options for each. Hope that works for you!

Thanks, hajusuuri! That sounds like fun. I have wanted to explore 4160 Tuesdays, but there are so many, and so many seem to get discontinued that I haven’t. Oh well, there are plenty of other houses, right?

    Sorry I’m late. Got distracted.

Tresor In Love by Lancôme. It’s said to have peach and nectarine notes but I just get an amorphous fruitiness. Love it though.

Wearing Yvresse for the CP today. Wow, this one has an entire triumvirate of peachy stone fruits: peach, nectarine. And apricot. Whew! This sounds to me as if it would be entirely too sweet, but it isn’t.
I’m not enjoying it as much in the cold weather. The sunny and lush aspects aren’t coming out on my skin today. Tomorrow, back to the winter favorites. Rest well, everyone!

Late post for me. I’m in When We Cuddle and I Can Smell Your Perfume on my Clothes, by Andy Tauer. No peach in this, but the fragrance is soft and comforting to me, and is perfectly named! 🤗

Collected CP points early in the day with Mitsouko, then added some Narcotica Doza after work.

Drove 2 hours each way to go to a flamenco show (over dinner). Makes for a long day, but was worth it.

Finally home at 11 pm and very ready to decompress!
