Tuesday scent of the day 12/19

Posted by Robin on 19 December 2023 156 Comments

It’s Tuesday and there are 12 more days to go in the year. Plus, National Oatmeal Muffin Day. Birthdays: Italo Svevo, Carter G. Woodson, Jean Genet, Édith Piaf, Cicely Tyson, Richard Leakey. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am up early for a quick medical appointment so I will choose a fragrance later. Tea at the moment is Cascadia Breakfast from The Jasmine Pearl Tea Company (thanks to a very kind reader).

Reminder: 12/22 will be Best Buy Friday…

Sorry, but it’s Monday. It’s also World Arabic Language Day and International Migrants Day. And a few birthdays: Paul Klee, Fletcher Henderson, Ossie Davis, Jacques Pépin. What fragrance are you wearing?

It’s dismal here, grey and rainy. I’m wearing Parfum d’Empire Azemour Les Orangers to compensate.

Reminder: 12/22 will be Best Buy Friday…

A new set of homegrown brands

Posted by Robin on 18 December 2023 Leave a Comment

Post-liberalisation, rather than selling directly to consumers, the vast majority of ittars and essential oils produced in India were exported to other businesses – either as an input into perfumery and cosmetic industries in the West or to the tobacco industry. Rosewater is an ingredient in chewing tobacco.

But in the past few years, several young, predominantly female Indian entrepreneurs have spotted a gap in the market between these indigenous artisanal skills and India’s thriving consumer culture, and a new set of homegrown brands has emerged.
