Thursday scent of the day 12/14

Posted by Robin on 14 December 2023 202 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy World Monkey Day. Birthdays: Stanley Crouch, Jane Birkin, Lester Bangs, Miranda Hart. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Hermès Brin de Réglisse. The name is just right.

Reminder: on 12/15, wear whatever you like, but tell us the name your fragrance should have had. (If the name is perfect, that's an acceptable answer.) Someone suggested this recently, raise your hand if it was you!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I am in Cartier Baiser Vole. My first thought was that the name is more fitting for a lipstick scent, but there is something sneaky and seductive in this lily scent, so maybe the name is right.

I think it’s some sort of IFRA regulation that if the main ingredient in your fragrance is vetiver, you have to call it Vetiver. That’s what everyone seems to do, at any rate: it’s true of Fragonard Vetiver, so I wouldn’t change the name (at the risk of incurring someone’s wrath).

The saleswoman in the shop in Paris was certainly fibbing when she said the bottle I bought a couple of months ago was exactly the same as it had been in the eighties: it doesn’t match my memory at all. But it’s still pretty good! Bright green opening with citrus and I think a flash of dill, then gradually warming and sweetening as it develops. Very pleasant. Doesn’t last long, but you can reapply without bothering anyone.

I was sniffing at Macy’s a couple of weeks ago. The SA fibbed and told me Versace Crystal Noir came out 3 months ago. I had made the mistake of saying I wanted to try some new releases. Lol.

Maybe she misunderstood and meant it was stocked 3 months ago … 🤣

I remember Luca Turin saying something like that: “If you put more than a drop of vetiver in you might as well call it Vetiver since it takes over the whole scent.”

Sad but true. I dislike vetiver and it has ruined many otherwise lovely fragrances for me.

    Hello.
Sotd is Amouage Love Tuberose. Correctly named and I do love it. Delicious tuberose chantilly cream.
Got to go get my watch fixed. It’s automatic movement but it stopped working, the second hand also fell off and now it’s swimming around the dial like those Chopard Happy Diamonds. I didn’t even drop the thing. Bizarre.

Hope your watch is an easy fix and it doesn’t have to be sent away somewhere. The screw-down crown fell off my old 1960s automatic recently for no reason recently and I missed it while it was being repaired.

I know the feeling. My sisters and I were trained from elementary school age to wear a watch every day. If we showed up to the breakfast table without it, we were sent back to put it on! I still wear my watch every day.

My exhusband gave me a Cartier watch for Christmas when I was about 30? It has been on my wrist for the last 40 years. Except every seven years it goes to the Cartier hospital for a tuneup.
My relationship with my watch has lasted twice as long as my marriage did!

    Hello all-
Taking a day for myself today. Asked my partner to help with kids’ activities.

Need a break from running around, craving time for leisure reading. No library today, just staying in unless I choose to go out.

Feeling so exhausted, need some me-time.

I tried the line several years ago from testers in a store, and I found most of them interesting, although none of them spoke to me enough to inspire an impulse purchase. I just took a Quick Look on Fragrantica, and they have more than 150 listed!
The one I liked the most is discontinued, so it wouldn’t surprise me if only the most recent are available. But worth checking out, I think!

I’m spending the morning in Francesca Bianchi’s Under My Skin, again. This is the extremely good floral leather scent in extrait format that I thought might become less special if I owned too much of it — that assessment is rapidly undergoing revision. There are two more sample vials on the way to me now, and the idea is to use them all up before springing for a FB. We’ll see. 😬 The name is obviously quite apt, at least as to yours truly.

    Hello all!

Been a rollercoaster of a day so far, and it’s barely 10am!

We had to cancel my birthday dinner (we were celebrating a few days early) because my mother woke up feeling unwell. I’m sure she’ll be fine but I don’t want to get everyone sick for the holidays.

Then I get a notification that my Calculus 2 final grade was posted. I was really dreading it but… I got an A! All A’s so far this semester but I was a bit nervous about this one specifically.

I hadn’t picked out a perfume for the day yet but now that my plans have changed, I might go with Cedar Sambac. I just adore it and could easily drain my bottle if I had a smaller collection. It might just be my favorite Nagel for Hermes this far. The name fits but somehow doesn’t capture the gorgeous quality of the scent. It feels like being swept up in a gust of warm fragrant wind.

    Have a great day everyone!

I think it’s a reference to jasmine sambac. It’s the most glorious woody jasmine scent, if you haven’t sniffed it.

Happy Thursday! Another morning of blindingly beautiful sunlight! I haven’t been in the SW of the US in two winters and oh, how I’ve missed it! A little cooler today but still very comfortable in a long sleeved shirt.

The Bat Cave tour was AH-mazing and if you’re ever in this area, I highly recommend it. Since this cave system was discovered quite recently, and then kept secret for years, then sold to the state of Arizona, it’s been kept very pristine. One of the guys who discovered it was an amateur spelunker and student at U of A at the time and went on to work for NASA for much of his career. Anyway, we toured the maternity area which is only open about 6 months of the year, the other 6 months being closed due to the bats using it to birth and raise their pups. My perfume this morning has a direct link to bats, if you can believe that! And no, it’s not Eau de Guano! 🤣 There is another tour that focuses more on geology, so I might do the today. Yesterday’s tour focused more on discovery and conservancy. Plus there is a gift shop with lots of books…😁 Oh, and they discovered the ancient bones of a Giant Sloth in the cave!!

Here’s a link for a brief history of anyone is interested:

    https://azstateparks.com/kartchner/explore/park-history

As for my scent today, and in honor of the bats, it’s CSP Amour de Cacao because bats are the sole pollinator of the cacao plant. 🦇

No, I didn’t smell anything I would classify as unpleasant. We did see roosting areas which were very identifiable due to the guano piles on the ground below. Since this cave was developed after the ADA act, it’s 100% accessible to all. I was so happy to see an elderly gentleman who obviously had a CVA in the past, but he was able to do the entire 2 hour tour without a problem. That’s huge for people with disabilities, because only 3 cave systems in the world are accessible to them. 🦽 You do have to pass through 3 or 4 airlock chambers, and in one you do get a bit misted, but seriously, you could take a small hospital bed through there! I cant tell you how happy it makes me! I had a friend years ago who was a quadriplegic and loved nature but could never “get out” and explore because these areas are just not accessible.

I love bat caves and habitats. There is a great bat house in Florida where my sister lives and in the Seychelles you really need to pay attention as giant fruit bats are hanging over you whereever you go.

Yes, our western sunsets are achingly beautiful and I plan on another one today.

Thanks for the link. I think bats are very cool. Bats are the only native land mammal in NZ ( excludes marine mammals) Every other mammal is introduced. And, in a very controversial twist, they were entered into NZ bird of the year ( a big competition here ) and won.

I love bats! And I can see how that could be just a wee bit controversial! I wonder who thought that up, hoping it’s meant tongue in cheek. 😁 We have a problem with bat population decline here due to White Nose Syndrome. This can and has killed off 95% of some colonies. They are very diligent here to prevent this. If you’ve been in any cave in the past year with the shoes you’re wearing for the tour, they have to be disinfected. You cannot touch ANYTHING! If you accidentally brush up against a rock formation, one of the hosts immediately tags it for decontamination. They’re pretty serious here.😅 I did learn that if a colony is wiped out by WNS, the surviving 5% do pass on genetic resistance to their pups, but still…95%…! Here’s a link to info regarding WNS if you’re interested:

I think it was more to raise awareness of them, as they are critically endangered. There was controversy this year, too, because the US talk show host John Olliver did a big promotion of an Australasian grebe for the NZ bird of the century and that won by thousands of votes, mostly overseas votes, which upset a lot of people here. It wasn’t seen as being in the spirit of the event.

Wow, that was some crazy voting! Seems a single person voted 40,000 times for a penguin species..! Makes sense to me that only New Zealand citizens should be able to vote, but it also sounds like the voting system used is not very accurate and open to abuse. People are nuts. 🥜

They’re amazing. This cave system, which is huge, only has bats in it for birthing time. The cave is quite warm and very moist compared to other caves that are usually cool and damp. Farther south is a cave where bats roost year round as adults- it’s quite a bit cooler there. Bat experts ( I have no clue what their actual title would be…) feel that pregnant bats chose this cave due to the warmth and high humidity, ensuring baby bats a fighting chance at survival. I have never seen live bats roosting and/or taking off! That would be a real treat for me.

No, haven’t tried that one. “Extreme” in any scent category makes me pause, to be honest. I love vanilla in almost any iteration, but “extreme” screams, at least to me, screechy, fake, burning, plastic vanilla. I’m afraid to try it…😬 Let me know what you think of it. Their Vanille Apricot is about as sweet as I can get.

Oh, I may hate it. I am just sampling a bunch of vanillas. I have said before that I think it may just not be a scent for me if vanilla is a prominent note in a fragrance.

Today I’m trying another of my new perfumes from Saudi Arabia, Reef Perfumes 36. It obviously needs a better name than that which might be Loud Ylang! Haha. The listed notes are pear blossoms, elderberry blossoms, ylang ylang and amber. I had tried this on skin in the little shop in my hotel because the lady told me it’s her favorite, but it was kind of screechy. However after that initial blast it softened a while lot and became so enticing that I decided to buy it. I’m not sure what pear blossoms smell like but to me this has actual pear in the mix. These fragrances have great staying power. This is on the sweet side so some won’t like it but I do.

I’m currently wafting a combination of my Rose Jam shower gel (perfectly named) and Aftelier chocolate-saffron body oil (also can’t argue with that one), and feeling fragrant enough that I don’t really want to layer perfume on top of all that.

Woke up to find that a plastic jug of local apple cider had *exploded* in my refrigerator, after fermenting, and then droozled out over rather a lot of the kitchen floor. Oops! So I’ll be scrubbing the floor for a while this morning…

ok lots of good smelling people here. I’m in Le Lion, and where I live was pouring with snow-real blizzard-y sort of day. Halfway to work, only about 30 km, and it was blue skies and sunny. But here at work there is a raw north wind. Something about Le Lion really pleases me in the chill clean winter air. I’m sure it’s great for the summer, but I think of it as more of a winter scent.

Lots of great restorative yoga classes on offer here, and I’m taking advantage of all of them before the holiday. There’s something so fundamentally beautiful about choosing restorative things when it’s busy, especially cause we’re coming up on the shortest day of the year, and it’s the end of the year. It appeals to me.

Please help me with ideas or links to how-to videos. 🙏
I have some pretty peppermint and gold foil wrappers from Lindor truffles that are one possible material to use, but how to shape and attach?

You could buy some cheap battery operated fairy lights and then use twist ties to shape the strand any way you’d like. If the battery box is supported with a bit of tape to the tree trunk you’d never even notice it. Plus, those lights usually come with an automatic timer, so set it and forget it!

Trying Love Eau Fraiche today. This is the recent version…I never tried the original. Quite similar to original Love. Will see how it wears but I think Love Extreme is my favorite version. 🌹

Yesterday I tried the new Guerlain Rose extrait and it left me kind of perplexed. I get they are supposed to be accords and layered but it felt unfinished to me. The opening is lovely w/ a fresh rose and there’s quite a bit of patchouli in the dry down but it didn’t move me…it felt like a variation on a theme but I don’t know what the theme is supposed to be.

I’m not sure I get the marketing/sales angle for the extraits. When Guerlain, with the perfume legacy they have, comes out w/ extraits at those prices they better be delivering a remarkable experience…and I was not impressed.

I’m wearing Le Parfum de Thérèse which is one of my favourite perfume names ever. So evocative in all its simplicity. I think it was my third Malle (Angéliques and En Passant were my first Malle purchases) and I didn’t even like it much at first sniff. But I was intrigued, and that is usually a good indicator of long lasting perfume love, and so it was with me and Thérèse.
Have had a few few intense days at work and am looking forward to not working as much. Some newspaper headlines announced that retirement age in the Netherlands will probably be pushed back to at least seventy (it’s 68 at the moment). So I will guess I’m not done yet.

A cursory glance at Google shows that the word baghari means a dish of boiled meat and rice; another said that baghari is a dip in a road. Baghari is also a village in India….none of those seem to fit the perfume. Not sure what is a better name though. I get mainly aldehydes, orange blossom and incense, maybe Meditation on a Blossom.

I’m wearing the chocolate patchouli goodness of Smell Bent Hungry Hungry Hippies, and I think it’s perfectly named! I think I just have subconsciously chosen a big, strong perfume for today to make up for barely wearing any yesterday. I went into the office for a team holiday gathering and wore just a couple dabs of 28 La Pausa EDT because I knew it would pretty much be gone by the time I got to work – and it was! One of my colleagues gifted us with holiday scented candles, so that was a nice surprise. The one I got was Berry Clementine with notes of cranberry, mandarin zest, and tonka. Between this and the two D.S. & Durga holiday candles I bought during their sample sale this summer (Prime Chanukah and Portable Xmas Tree), I better amp up my candle burning time!

My neighbor across the street and I usually go out for a meal 2x a year and yesterday was the day. When we made the lunch appointment, she said that because I am not working, we shouldn’t exchange gifts but I had already gotten her gift back in November. Anyway, I ended up treating her to lunch at Olive Garden. We got home and I gave her the gift. Not 10 minutes later, she called me and said she needs to return the gift card because how can I afford to give her the gift card, now that I am not working? I am comfortable with what I have and don’t have to change my lifestyle, even if I end up not working one more day in my life. I have told her previously that I have no financial concerns and each time she said for me to be careful with my spending. I wonder if she thinks I may be somewhat irresponsible with my finances, not thinking maliciously but out of concern? In any case, I will attribute it to her as being concerned for my welfare, nothing more, nothing less.

Aw, you’re a sweetheart! Maybe she’s hesitant to accept because she is financially struggling, like so many right now, and doesn’t feel she can reciprocate? I love Olive Garden! My grandmother and I used to go there for lunch several times a month. We both got the “All you can Eat” soup and salad. Everything I know about being cheap is due to my grandmother, who lived through the depression and came out the other side thinking .25 cents was a good tip! We always had to bustle her out and then go back and leave a REAL tip! I miss her! 🥲

She is financially struggling although I think she has enough to go by. We also had the all you can eat but it came as part of an entree order (yummy).

I think it’s probably her just being concerned. I also think it’s more polite to just say Thank you when you are given a gift.

I agree with you. I pretty much said please just keep it because it was made with the season in mind.

The gift card issue could be a case of “A bit of Column A and a bit of Column B”. Your neighbor is concerned about finances, but it is not clear if it is hers or yours. Could be both.

        It’s hers … and she’s also in her 80s so there’s a concern over a “young ‘un”.

Running around trying to get things done. Got some answers that I didn’t have yesterday, and donated some stuff to the county animal shelter. Trying to pack more stuff.

I will be going radio silent for a bit. Gotta be in two places at once.

SOTD = commando, except for Korres Grecian Gardenia in the usual spots.

I went to a Christmas craft sale at my daughter’s school today. Everything was made by the students. I bought some Christmas cards, hot cocoa bags, an ornament, keychain and a framed watercolor made by my daughter. It was fun. I wore Angel Muse, which I think is a pretty good name match. Although it is so creamy they could have called it Angel Mousse. Lol.

I’m wearing Dior Addict today. It’s not the best name for a fragrance but this is such a well-blended, smooth scent. One of my favorites in the winter.

      We were almost twins today.
I didn’t like the name when it was first released. It just seems to fit now though. I do not know any perfume that I can compare Addict to. It’s really something special.

I hated the name so much that I didn’t even try it when it came out.

Maybe I should have been less grouchy? 😡😏

I hope you get a chance to try it! I also have the Oil Perfumery version; to me, it’s pretty spot-on (if you want to sniff it without having to track down a vintage sample). That way you’ll have a good idea if it’s for you.

Put on Wisteria Hysteria this morning, but it is gone, gone, gone. Off to the summer boxes with it! I love winter florals, Mohur Extrait, Snowy Owl, Mon Precieux Nectar, Oeilette Rouges, Seville a l’Aube…which of course found me looking at the unopened $1300 bottle of Attrape Coeur on EBay. Ugh.
I need to just give away all the mostly full (therefore unworn) bottles I have, and focus on enjoying the well loved favorites… Adorable hubby has gotten such a clean bill of health from his cancer doctors, he needs no additional chem at this time. Maybe a CT or MRI in April, just to check. We are both sort of stunned. Now I need to think about how to celebrate the holidays!
