Wednesday scent of the day 12/13

Posted by Robin on 13 December 2023 147 Comments

Happy Hump Day! It's also National Violin Day and National Hot Cocoa Day. Birthdays: Mary Todd Lincoln, Emily Carr, Ella Baker, Dick Van Dyke, Jamie Foxx. What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m in Narciso by Narciso Rodriguez (white cube) (copying ringthing yesterday). I can't find the right word in Spanish, but I'm going with Gardenia Mullido, maybe? Even Narciso Blanco would have been better than just Narciso.

Reminder: on 12/15, wear whatever you like, but tell us the name your fragrance should have had. (If the name is perfect, that's an acceptable answer.) Someone suggested this recently, raise your hand if it was you!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello.
Sotd is Chanel Jersey. To me it should be Cashmere because of it’s fluffiness and comfort.
I bought Diptyque’s holiday Sapin (Pine Tree) room spray and it is so wonderful. It has a touch of sweetness just like the fresh pine needles and doesn’t come across as cold. Okay, confession, I bought 3 bottles. But only because it’s a tiny 50ml size! 3 of them equal to a normal 150ml spray bottle of the usual scents! Don’t judge please…🤣

I can’t think of a more “no judgment about scent” zone than NST. The room spray sounds perfect for this time of year.

I don’t usually do room scents (okay, once in a blue moon I’ll get a diffuser). This sounds lovely. I’m going to check it out, since I have a fake tree

That sounds delightful! I love the smell of actual pines, but I find that many pine scents can lean either antiseptic or somehow kind of melancholy. DSH’s Seve de Pin has a golden, warm sweetness to it that sounds like what you’re describing…

Today I’m in Lush Let The Good Times Roll, which I like more every time I wear it. I still can’t detect any popcorn, but now I think it smells like sticky toffee pudding, dates and all. (I could be imagining this.) I don’t love the name, but I’ll concede it’s not the worst thing in the world. They certainly could have called it Sticky Toffee Pudding, although frankly they could have called it absolutely anything: many of their names are fanciful and have only a tenuous connection to the scent (why should Mamma Mia smell of grapefruit and vanilla?).

I am wearing vintage Chamade. The name doesn’t go with the scent for sure.
It is soft, powdery. I would maybe change it during the day since i don’t really feel it, this will be nicer during spring or summer.
I went to see Parajanov’s the Colour of Pomegranate movie yesterday night and slept really well afterwards, I think it transported me to a different time and place.

Beautiful photo in the header, Robin!

Just a very light spritz of JM Ginger Biscuit this morning as I’ll be touring a Bat Cave 🦇 later this afternoon.

We had such a stunning sunset yesterday it almost made me cry! I’ll be dramatic and say transcendental. 😊 There was an appearance by two deer friends so I felt extra blessed and in awe. Just what I needed after 2.5 hours in health credentialing and then making a Very Bad Decision to go to Costco to enroll. Mobbed is an understatement. When I finally rolled out of Tucson, it was 83F…😭

Have a great Hump Day everyone!

Wasn’t that sunset a beaut?! 🥰 The day wasn’t so much unpleasant as tedious. And I have realized the older I get, the less patience I have with this kind of stuff. For instance, had to fill out 8-10 pages online, then had to fill out the exact same stuff on paper before the appointment, only to have the MD ask the exact same questions verbally on exam. Who knows
how much time I have left? I don’t want to waste it on this kind of redundancy. I’ve been told I have a RBF and it seems I’ve developed a RBP (resting bitc* personality) as well. Oh well. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Savoring coffee under the cherry blossoms on a small street in Kobe.
Riding the Star Ferry for 50 cents in Hong Kong.
Watching the sunset from the top of a temple over the Irrawaddy in Burma.
Getting unexpected flowers delivered to my door.
I’m glad you had few moments of splendor.

I’m wearing DS&Durga I Don’t Know What, which isn’t that well named because I know exactly what is in it (it’s on the package!), and it smells like it (iso e super & vetiver). And it just sounds weird to say “I don’t know what” when it just makes more sense in my head as “je ne sais quoi”.

On me it smells like a very strong version of Molecule 01 — big sillage, so there’s no comfort / wafting in a way that people feel is pleasant but they don’t know what it is. “Kinda generic but balanced unisex that leans male” might be a better name. (Molecule 01 doesn’t recede to the background on me, either, but it’s softer.)

Anyway, I tried it last night when I got it, and just wore it alone. Today, I’ve paired it with Diptyque Eau Rose, since I also got a small bottle of that and I thought it needed something to punch it up, but the DS&Durga is overwhelming it.

I’m in Carnal Flower, and I think I smell amazing. Used about four spritzes. A lot of my time today is spent helping people complete some forms, to help the afford some sort of energy for their homes. I’m as well groomed as I know how to be, I have the small sizes of Aveda handcream to give them, and two tins of Quality Street. Everyone that want to can have some of the good lube for hands and a bit of sugar. It’s nice to see the customers face to face and hopefully they take a minute and enjoy themselves, a bit, while we get their forms processed.

Hope everyone’s day is decent, in the overall 🙂

Last night was Ferragamo Leather Rose, which would more accurately be Rose Leather (a nice jammy rose like in Rose Flash), which makes me think it really would have been Rose & Cuir, and the Frederic Malle one definitely needs a new name. That one was a disappointment to me. Need to find my sample to see if my opinion has changed.

The Ferragamo one is discontinued, but a bunch of bottles for the more recent “Tuscan” collection are <$100 on discount sites right now, including one with same notes (plus orange blossom) and same perfumer. I’m tempted by a couple bottles in that collection, but they’d be bound buys.

SOTD = Hotel Costes Costes EDT

Very nice and soothing. I suppose it’s “ok” to give it the name of the place where this was made for but for the 99.99% + of people who have never been there before, HOW would they know? I would have called this “Soothing Lavander Sauna”.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/C0zjL1Gxae_/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

Question about tips – when do you and when do you not tip? Nowadays, other than grocery and department stores (and I would lose it if they do), the keypad has how much tip do you want to give. I have no set rule but it is so insidious that I may need to set up a set of rules to guide me.

Love Costes, especially the dry oil.

As for tipping, if the person is not actually providing service, I refuse to tip. Ringing up my purchase at the register does not qualify as service in my book. I do leave $1 at the local bakery/coffee shop when I buy pastries though, because they are so sweet & cheerful.

Tipping for me is all about the level of service…just ringing up my order is usually not enough. Like cazaubon, I tip at the local coffee shop where I am a regular because they start my order when I open the door….otherwise, I reward the extra step.

More and more places have a setup where you order at the counter and they bring your food and drinks to the table. In a full service restaurant I tip at least 20% but at these places I am only willing to give 10%. They’re giving you some service but not a lot. The problem is that the software for tip options starts at 20% and goes up from there! I just take the extra seconds of clicking custom tips and typing in the 10% amount then signing.

I used to tip at the salon where I had my hair done. I’d been a client there since the late 1990’s, so I had a long standing stylist that I trusted.

I also tip the pizza delivery guy. Usually it’s something like $3 – $5.

Edit to the salon comment: since my last visit was back in the summer, I haven’t been spending money there or tipping. I didn’t just quit tipping out of the blue in that instance…

My role is thumb: if I would have tipped for this kind of service 10 years ago, I will tip. But if 10 years ago a similar business would not have had a tip jar, I’m not tipping at all.

I do tip on takeout in certain restaurants, since I believe many of those businesses are still not paying a liveable wage and are operating on the tip model, although I agree with others that there’s no real service provided. You’re ringing me up and handing me a product.

A perfect photo for my perfume today. I finally found a mini of Guerlain Rosa Maginifica. The name is just perfect. It is indeed gorgeous, pure rose smell.

Also, I found Ormande Jayne´s Woman perfume online for a great price. Now I have a full bottle of a perfume that maybe should be called Witches spell or Into the woods…

SOTD is more of Aedes Cafe Tabac, I think I’m in love.
The dry down is beautiful, not too sweet, not too boozy, not too tobacco.
The copy for this fragrance sure makes it sound BIG, but it’s more like for Goldilocks, just the right size.
A bottle may be my final purchase of the year.

Another day, more crazy. CCO inspection completed; all good. Dropping stuff off at the title company. Discovering that airport shuttles seem to have been killed off by COVID. Picked a mover and signed that paperwork.

Everything I am finding is either insanely expensive, like a limo ($300 one way), or comes off as a sketchy AF, fly by night company.

I figure if someone isn’t returning calls left to their answering service, they aren’t legit.

Hello everyone! I’m back from my amazing trip to Saudi Arabia, really quite an experience, and I did indeed find and buy perfumes there! My SOTD is Reef #42 and a name like that definitely can be improved upon. Its notes are rose, peach, and musk, and it’s quite an edible smelling and somewhat dusky sweet scent, so maybe Pillowy Peach Buns, or some such thing?

My over-the-top glitzy hotel had a branch of Reef perfumes right there in the lobby, with a very sweet SA who let me try everything. I sampled scents there and bought two. They had a “Golden Friday” sale on, buy two, get two for free, so I came home with FOUR new perfumes in gorgeous bottles! I’ll post pictures on my Instagram account. I think all four are very interesting. They have good lasting power and a kind of purity in the ingredients. And the best thing is that I only spent a total of $140 for what are really quite high quality scents!

Reef has a website in both Arabic and English, and if you search on them by numbers, such as Reef Perfume 42, you’ll turn up eBay listings with more descriptions. They are mostly set at around $140/bottle, which is kind of ridiculous since that’s about four times what I paid in Riyadh.

I will chime in more later (probably tomorrow) with a few more reports about scent experiences over there, but the entire trip was so overwhelming that it is going to take me a long time to recover. Glad to be home with my kitty-cats, who are suitably clingy and loving.

Working tonight and wearing Alien. The perfume and hair mist. I think the name fits.
The Alien sprayers are the worst. I have 10 to 20 ml. Left in most of my flankers but they don’t spray very well anymore. I am also now hoarding what I have left, as the new version of regular Alien is filled with Ambroxan.

I am so late posting today, I was finishing up a couple of craft projects. I’m wearing Ginger Biscuit, aptly named, but JM still is not one of my favorite houses. It’s as if they dilute their fragrances to appeal to people who don’t want to offend.

Jo Malone is what sent me down the rabbit hole. It probably was a good start for me as the fragrances are soft and easy to wear. At the beginning I really did enjoy them. Now, several years later, I don’t have any Jo Malone colognes. Not that I don’t like them, I just feel like my taste has changed and now I branch out a little more than I did at that time. Plus, now that I am retired, I don’t have to consider people in the office/workspace.

Put on Wisteria Hysteria this morning, but it is gone, gone, gone. Off to the summer boxes with it! I love winter florals, Mohur Extrait, Snowy Owl, Mon Precieux Nectar, Oeilette Rouges, Seville a l’Aube…which of course found me looking at the unopened $1300 bottle of Attrape Coeur on EBay. Ugh.
I need to just give away all the mostly full (therefore unworn) bottles I have, and focus on enjoying the well loved favorites… Adorable hubby has gotten such a clean bill of health from his cancer doctors, he needs no additional chem at this time. Maybe a CT or MRI in April, just to check. We are both sort of stunned. Now I need to think about how to celebrate the holidays!
