Wednesday scent of the day 11/22

Posted by Robin on 22 November 2023 283 Comments

It’s Hump Day and National Cranberry Relish Day. (Plus, Thanksgiving Eve aka Drinksgiving / Blackout Wednesday — be careful out there!) Birthdays: Abigail Adams, André Gide, Hoagy Carmichael and Billie Jean King. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm doing pre-Thanksgiving chores in an old-but-not-quite-forgotten friend, Comme des Garçons Kyoto, and sending gratitude to the very kind reader who sent me some. (And I'm taking community project points since I've been waiting for eons for Comme des Garçons to do travel sizes.)

Reminder: on 11/24, pick your Black Friday poison: wear the last fragrance you bought, wear a cheap thrill, or wear a fragrance you love but refuse to buy in a full size because it's too expensive. (We've done this project several times.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    SOTD..the queen…
I am in Shalimar Ode a la Vanille Sur la route de Madagascar

This is my favorite of all the flankers-and it’s very expensive.

Shera-I am still lemming over that cheap bottle of Encens Mythique you found online. Maybe I will pull the trigger..

If you do a google search on the perfume name + buy, Fragrancenet.com will come up with the Black Friday price, which is 40% off.

But I’m not seeing the $103 price there. Perfumeonline.ca seems to be the closest at $102.77.

Very interesting article about Gatekeeping your perfume. That is the reason why i always feel a little shy to ask the perfume of a stranger. The other day there was this lady who came to the clinic, she was wearing an amazing clean musky perfume, couldn’t ask!!

I rarely ask strangers their perfumes but if I smell something nice that I know, I will complement. My most recent was a lady wearing Alien. It suited her so well I just had to tell her.

FWIW, I always ask. But first, I compliment. 😉 What’s the worst they could do? I’ve found that most people are pleased to hear that they smell good.
Before it got cold here, I happened to be walking down the sidewalk behind a young man who smelled so gorgeous! After I told him so, I asked him what it was. Answer: MM Replica Coffee Break. Which did not smell as good on me by a long shot. Confession time: we were walking in the same direction for a while, and I surreptitiously continue to walk in his wake to enjoy it. 😂

Also in Guerlain here. Shalimar MI.
I still cannot get over how delicious this smells with the Prada Candy-type caramel.
I have been playing Christmas albums already. I know it’s kinda early but the mood is already here! Maybe it’s from all those Christmas shopping emails.

I used to say I never buy bubs at all, but since saying that I have gotten Shalimar MI, No 5 L’Eau and FM Iris Poudre. Thinking about doing it with Dusita Splendiris as well as they have a huge sale on it at fragrancebuyca. And no, I am not affiliated with them.

PSA: I am not buying perfume this Black Friday, but if anyone is shopping for themselves or for gifts Saks Fifth Avenue has 15% off beauty which includes perfumes and candles plus get a $75 gift card when you spend $150, starting now with code HELLOBFSF. This includes brands like Diptyque perfumes and candles, Bond, Creed, MFK, Vilhelm, Byredo, Tom Ford, Parfums de Marly, etc.. Le Labo isn’t on sale though. The 15% off plus getting a $75 gift card is tempting, but I’ll abstain this time.

Neiman Marcus has a sale on now but it’s not that great: you get $50 if you spend $250 and it increases stepwise according to amount of purchase. I was contemplating Parfums de Marly Valaya which I love, but it’s $355 and so still would be over $300 with the discount and that’s still too steep for me.

That’s less good than what they were offering last week. I pulled the trigger on the NM advent calendar, which was $155, and they were offering a $50 gift card on purchases of $200 and over, as well as a little bag with samples on purchases of $150 or over, so I found something I liked for $50, figuring it is effectively free. I wish I wanted something from Saks, but I don’t right now. I did take advantage of Ormonde Jayne’s sale, and got DH a nice big bottle of Ormonde Man for whenever he needs to fill in a gap in his ‘fume cabinet. That will make four bottles in reserve, so I don’t need to shop for perfume for him for a while.

I guess I’m accidentally on point for the CP, in 80s-era Vol de Nuit EDT. It was a relatively inexpensive find at an online reseller (sadly no longer in business) who was very reliable and knowledgeable, both about vintage perfumes and about their worth. I miss her.

I am testing Berdoues Hoja de Cuba, which is nice but a bit too simple – dry sweet tobacco, slightly fruity.

Today I finally finished my second coding class. I started last year, but then took a break from it because of work and other things.

I submitted my app and got a certificate in web development. Yay! My main regret is that I made C/F conversion only for the current weather, not for the 5-day forecast. It is just too advanced, and we were not taught how to do it. Maybe I will get some help and update the app later, but the whole C/F conversion is optional anyway.

I added another extra – a changing background image. Ok, AI helped me with this piece (wrote the code snippet I needed and explained it), but still. It is currently set to fall, but on December 1 it should change to winter.

Whew. Will this help me earn $ or in other practical ways? Hard to say. But it sure gave me a sense of achievement.

The app is here, if you are curious – https://olga-weather.netlify.app/
Note that it takes some seconds to load weather data, and the time shown is not the current time, but the time when the latest forecast was fetched.

I’m fluent only in three – English, Russian and Ukrianian. 😁
The beauty of coding is that you do not have to remember everything – you can look up stuff. And it is both like and unlike learning a human language.

Your English is not shoddy based on your posts here! And don’t you speak dog, too? 🤣

Thank you! I envy your weather! The app indeed converts the current temperature, but not the 5-day forecast temperatures – that’s trickier.

If you are comfortable sharing your location, you can also try the blue/orange button. It detects your location and displays the weather for it automatically – you do not need to enter the name of the city then. I believe it works in the same way as on other websites with geolocation – when, for example, a website finds the store nearest to you. The app asks you to give access to your location when you click on the button, but only once, I think.

SOTE last night was on point for the CP, and I’m still smelling it: Jubilation 25 Woman. I’ve had it on my list to buy for over a decade, but can never quite justify the cost since I have a decant and really the tiniest spray lasts forever. I don’t wear it that often, because it is quite strong, but I’ve been remembering over the last 12 hours how much I do love it.

    Hello all!

I’m compliant today in a perfume bottle I found yesterday at an antique shop by the sea. For only $14, I bought a nearly full bottle of Faun by Ravel. I didn’t know anything about it and there isn’t much online. But it’s a strong vintage woody scent, thick with cedar, and what smells like a touch of civet in the base.

    Have a great day everyone!

Wearing the remainder of last night’s Kiehls Musk, which I have dug out of my cabinet after not wearing it for ages, maybe years. So good!
I am being a domestic goddess today, doing necessary household chores that I’ve been putting off. It will be nice when it’s all done and I’ve had a shower, then I’ll join the Guerlain crowd in vintage Nahema.

Going Cheap as Chips today in Queen by Queen Latifah courtesy of TJMaxx. It’s a 100ml bottle and was less than $10, IIRC.

    Non-Perfume News:

I’m in the process of making my very first load of sourdough. It’s quite a small loaf because if I failed, which I have done so often in the past, I didn’t want to waste a bunch of flour. The problem for me has always been the starter. I failed miserably in my 20’s and thought I would fail again in 2023 because I never have the heat on at night unless there’s a chance of a freeze. So that means it’s usually in the 40’s overnight inside the camper. Yeast and bacteria are like “No Bueno, we’re going to sleep!”

So, I bought a small USB heating pad for the lower back and set the jars on it. Unfortunately, it has a safety that kicks in at the two hour time mark and shuts down, which I didn’t realize until I got it home. 🙄 Dang! That wouldn’t work for night time, which is when I needed it most.

So, I transferred the starter into a clean jam jar with a screw top lid and took it to bed with me. 🙃 It stays nice and toasty under the covers, between the dog and I it must be at least 80-85F. And guess what? It’s ALIVE! Many many CO2 bubbles, and then a consistent rise and fall! I feel like I’ve won the Pulitzer Prize! Anyway, the little loaf is in a warm spot doing its last rise before baking. Wish me luck! 🥖

Hope everyone who celebrates Thanksgiving tomorrow has a great day surrounded by friends and family, dogs and cats, or completely alone if that’s your jam! Cheers!

The most cats we have ever had at one time was 7. It did seem like a bit much; not that we didn’t love them all, but it always felt as if we were neglecting someone. With only two people in our household, it’s hard to give enough attention to all seven. Three or four seems to be a good number. Right now we only have two.

I’m so sorry about your losses. We lost two kitties (out of three) last year, within a couple of months of one another, and it hit us hard. Our one remaining kitty seemed so lost; he couldn’t figure out where his friends had gone to. We adopted one from a local shelter so we now have two. I’m thinking about adding a third, but probably no more than that.

I am absolutely not cooking one thing for Thanksgiving. I’m going to my friend’s house and she has ordered the entire traditional dinner including green bean casserole from the local HEB store. All I’m going to take is Prosecco and vino! Yay! We plan to watch old movies on Youtube. At my recent conference I learned about Dorothy Arzner, the only woman director of the Golden Era films, and she sounded so interesting we’re going to find some of hers to watch on Youtube.

Today’s fragrance doesn’t fit the CP. I’m in Memo Lalibela, for no good reason except that I had a couple of Ethiopian Uber drivers in the past week when I was traveling (I went to Washington, D.C. for a conference), and one was talking to me about how old Christianity is there. So this reminded me of Lalibela and I’m smelling rather sweet but wonderful.

I’ve never seen delicata squash here, though it might be available somewhere ( maybe Gaynor knows it). I’m tempted to plant some in our veggie garden and see what happens, as I can order seeds. Might give it a go. I have been reading several Graham Greene books recently, novels and essays which has taken me from England to Cuba, Vietnam and Argentina and Sierra Leone. Such a range of locations ( “colonies”) …and there’s plenty more ( Mexico, Haiti, Liberia, Congo….). I was trying to think of a contemporary author ( not pulp thriller ) who has touched on as many places. Wearing Copper.

Yes. It has a fresh “ash tray “ smell ( galbanum) which is very cigarette ashy to begin, but then becomes more like a green amber scent, with a touch of sweetness and more rounded. I like it and have almost used up my bottle. It’s not a harsh scent but you definitely have to like galbanum.

I have never had delicata squash, but people were talking about it in the comments so I bought one this week. I always bought acorn or butternut. Going to cook mine tonight to have with leftover beef.

Serious Eats wants me to use a ruler to cut it so I guess I will…

That’s a very scientifically minded recipe! I’d describe delicate squash as being sort of halfway between the taste of acorn and butternut, and easier to cut than either. Hope yours is good!

I used a tape measure! It was delicious, and I do see the point of the measurements because you get the perfect amount of browned edges + creamy middle. Quite nice.

Now I wonder if it is more delicious than other squash just because of this method. I usually just cut squash in half and bake it, like Jalapeno mentions above.

I think it might be a bit of Column A and a bit of Column B. A perfectly cooked Delicata squash has that awesome creamy texture that I haven’t encountered with any other winter squash. Plus all those tasty caramelized bits. 😋

No SOTD yet. Right now I’m baking bread, and after that I will make a pumpkin pie. I’m NOT making a Thanksgiving dinner; there are only two of us, we don’t have a family’s or friend’s house to go to, so we are going out to eat for dinner tomorrow to let someone else mess with all that. The bread is not sourdough, it is regular yeast bread, but from a very simple, easy recipe:

    https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/no-knead-crusty-white-bread-recipe

The pie is just because we both love pumpkin pie.

We both like it, so it doesn’t last long around our house. The pie turned out well; I was going to wait and have it for dessert after dinner, but I got impatient and had a slice of it already with Chantilly cream. I used some of the bread to make a BLT for lunch, and will use some more of it to make garlic bread to go with our dinner. I’m starting to rediscover my enjoyment of cooking now that I am not having to face doing it when I am already tired from a full day of work.

Kayali Wedding Silk Santal 36 from a little decant. For me it’s a sweet, almost powdery vanilla with a touch of plastic and that scratchy musk that isn’t my favorite.
Happy Wednesday and hope everyone’s turkeys defrost on time! I think mine is sadly behind the 8 ball.

If you run a light stream of cold water on your turkey overnight, it should be defrosted by tomorrow morning. Just make very sure that the water has a way to drain out of the sink.

I am twins with allo today in a cheap thrill, Zara Leather Jardin. What I came back to post, however, is a plug for the author Elizabeth George Speare, whose birthday Robin posted yesterday. She wrote The Witch of Blackbird Pond, one of my favorite novels ever, even though it’s written for a YA audience. At 12 or 13, I read it for the first time. It has come to mind every now and then after all these years, so I read it again recently. Still excellent!

Commando ATM. Just got back from picking up wine and the turkey (half a turkey, in fact) for tomorrow. Have to continue grading essays, but will also make the cranberry sauce this afternoon, plus some cookies to take to drinks with friends this evening. I bought our T-giving dessert for the first time in my adult life. A colleague’s son was selling pies as a fundraiser, they had a kind that I love but won’t make at home, and it seemed like a reasonable solution. What’s great is that the frozen pie is pre-sliced, so I don’t need to to thaw the whole thing if it’s only two or three of us for dinner tomorrow (numbers remain uncertain, but small).

Will wear something rich and comforting this evening. Probably Borneo 1834.

Tomorrow is not a holiday on this side of the pond but I will cook sweet potatoes and I’m enjoying reading about what everyone is preparing. Today I was wearing Jean Patou 1000 EDP, this year I got a vintage EDT which smells great but the modern EDP is good. Tonight it’s Hanae Mori ‘Butterflies’ EDP, a cheapie I remain fond of, so fond I have it in Parfum concentration too.

I’m in a cheap thrill today with B&BW White Tea & Ginger, which I got for $3.95 over the summer during their semi annual sale. I used to wear this during college in the early 2000s so I got some little memory flashes when I sprayed it this morning. I also found it’s a good affordable substitute for Neroli Outrenoir. They’re quite similar, but NO has more depth and richness, of course.

In book talk, I just finished a really great mystery/thriller by Lisa Jewell called The Night She Disappeared. It was a real page turner with characters that I really cared about. Also, it’s the first of hers I’ve read and I plan to read her other mysteries.

So a question, what the best mystery/thriller that you’ve read recently? I’m looking for more to devour this winter.

This is set in Auckland, NZ, and the crime is set against colonisation with a strong Maori thread through it. So, it’s an interesting perspective on typical crime stories.

Oh, thrillers are my favorite genre so I could list books all day. It may be better if I just tell you some of the best thriller authors. Lisa Jewell has plenty more so you can pick up more by her. Freida McFadden is very popular now and her books are a fast read. Other thriller authors I enjoy are; Shari Lapena, Ruth Ware, Linwood Barclay, Liv Constantine, Kate White and Sally Hepworth. These authors all have multiple books that are great! Try a few and see.

Today I’m in spiriteuse double vanille, from a dabber. In the “Do I dare an FB at that price? How much do I love thee?” category. I don’t think this is discontinued? But also doesn’t seem to be carried a lot of places. Shout if you see a BF sale for this

So do I. And after I’d gone to Kroger yesterday just to buy things I’d need to eat for the weekend, my friend who invited me over for dinner tomorrow e-mailed to ask me could I please bring a dessert, she didn’t buy anything. Ugh. I scoured my cupboard and found I had an extra can of pumpkin on hand and now I’ve found a recipe that sounds good for pumpkin cookies, and I feel excited to make them! (I don’t have stuff on hand to make a pie.) The only catch is that they have cream cheese frosting, and although I have whipped cream cheese on hand I have no block. I will improvise! Also, my baking powder says best before June 2023….. we’ll just have to go with the flow on that. I’ll report back in later. I actually feel kind of happy to have something to cook.

I’m CP compliant with Heure Exquise. I was given a sample by a thoughtful NST enabler and then went on the hunt. Last week I found a vintage FB 80’s era for $38. Was nervous it would have gone off because some AG perfumes are notorious for their short lives, but took the risk and it is gorgeous.

As for the upcoming holiday, well, Sr. Spiderplant tested positive for the viral scourge late this morning. We appear to have fully dodged it for almost 4 years, yet here we are. Got the key scrip filled immediately via tele-medicine and all is well so far. So he’s holed up in his his home office with supplies galore and an air mattress. Just asked me to bring him his guitar pedal 😀 Hoping my own luck will hold…

Had an inspection by my local fire department this afternoon, which is a requirement for sale in my area. I found out that the fire extinguishers I have are too small. So those are getting upgraded. Everything else was OK.

I will be bringing potent potables to my Thanksgiving dinners. Yes, plural. One will be served sparkling hard cider, and the other will be beer. Since I don’t have the beer here at Casa de Jalapeno, that means I will be braving the store on Black Friday. Or maybe Saturday morning.

If anyone here has been longing for a Bruno Fazzolari/Fzotic perfume, but didn’t want a full bottle, he is offering travel sizes of ALL of them for a couple of days. I may or may not have grabbed a couple…

SOTD = commando, except for Korres Grecian Gardenia body butter in the usual spots.

So glad you have plans. Cider seems made for Thanksgiving and wishing short queues for the beer.

Thank you Aurora! The hard cider was brewed by a microbrewery in South Jersey a few towns over.

Thanks! I’m hoping that everyone else in the area will be chasing Black Friday bargains at other stores, LOL!

This Friendsgiving will be non traditional as far as eats. It’s going to be a spaghetti dinner instead of turkey and the trimmings. Not a problem for me!

Thank you Gail! The passionfruit cider is especially tasty. Only one bottle, since it will be a very small table.

Finally home after working all day. It seems people started Christmas shopping early. We were extremely busy. I don’t know about anyone else but I find online shopping more exhausting than in person shopping. There is just too much to look at and price compare.
I wore vintage Poison today. I am bringing out the potent stuff for the crowd’s!

Quick note on asking people what perfume they’re wearing…I was testing some old things in the back of my closet and did one spray of Escada Collection and ran outside to shush our barking dog, only to find the very nice older elegant Russian Armenian lady who babysits a neighbor’s kid outside with the stroller. Said hi and she immediately asked what perfume I was wearing and complimented me.
I told her and said alas it was discontinued.
Oh, she said, my fave fragrance is also d/c. Sad face.
    What is it?
    Madame Rochas.
Well, I happened to have about 1/3 of a small vintage bottle in my collection so I offered to give it to her and said I’d just run up and get it.
    Not today, she said.
    Why ever not?
Because I must organize a gift for you too.
I respected that hers is a gift-giving culture, so we parted, and when I went back in to check my Madame Rochas, I was horrified to see it had all evaporated.
Now I had promised her something I could not give her.
So I went online and found a small vintage bottle for a very reasonable price.
It’s on its way to me, and once we exchange our ‘gifts,’ I will show her the magic that is ebay, etsy, etc and how she can now find gallons of Madame Rochas and not feel sad.
So I’m really glad she asked me!
